The items that we burned were students' names and grades for every class the previous owner taught. They were his own personal records, not actual books. We plan to go through all the books individually and determine if they are kept, sold, or donated.

Whew - that's got to feel good! Between removing all the carpet/padding/curtains and culling out alot of books - letting the house air out will make such a big difference! Major sweat equity but the payoff is huge.

We visited a used office furniture place for a file cabinet. The owner tried to sell us a file cabinet that did not have a lock because he had 240 of them (we wanted a lock). He said a professor had all his research in those file cabinets in his home. He even ADDED ON to his house to accommodate all the file cabinets filled with his research. When the professor died, no one wanted to go through the 240 file cabinets, so all his beloved research was trashed. I like watching minimalism/downsizing/decluttering videos to remind me that I don't need so much stuff. I may as well enjoy the peace that comes for owning less while I am alive.

Good job of getting rid of that old carpet! When we moved here, the previous owner had TWO layers of carpeting and padding! It took forever to get rid of it, but underneath were beautiful hardwood floors. ( I never want to see carpet tacks again!) :o)

I took up carpeting, and padding that was stapled to the floor, and pulled up tack strips and tacks, by myself throughout my small house. It was quite a job and took a long time. I also had plywood underneath. I temporarily painted all the boards a medium brown color until I figured out what kind and color of flooring I wanted to lay down. I get how much work that is.

I’d might get an expert opinion on whether you’re in for a long range problem keeping them. Bottom line, if the books have mildew damage, you’ll be keeping it in your house that may result in other long term problems. Good luck!

Mold permeates books. Is it safe to sell/donate them? Won't it make mold spores spread to other people's places. I know Art and Bri threw out all of theirs.

    • @TheKraemerLife
      @TheKraemerLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

We checked the upstairs for mold and there was no indication that it was high. Everything was in the crawlspace and since the previous owner taped everything shut there was no air transfer between the main living and crawl space. We also did fog the entire upstairs for mold, just in case and also left the books sitting out for over 48 hours to help air them out. Anything that showed any signs of mold were tossed.

Or maybe contact the college that previous owner worked at.....they may want books for their library?

Many of the books are from the college library or very old versions no longer in use unfortunately.

You dont need to cut it out. remove baseboards, cut it to the wall, treat the edge if you are concerned for mold then lay your floors. What homesteaders dont get is that everyone doesnt havea farmers market that sells food. Mostly crafts in my area.

That's crazy. I thought that was the whole point of a Farmer's Market. There are 2 in the small city I live near and it's mostly produce, honey etc.

The work ahead surely must feeling daunting at times. Sometimes I need to remind myself life is about the journey not arriving at a destination.
And for you as YTers, we’ve come for the journey, not to watch you both kicking back in rockers! 😂
    Sincere best wishes navigating!.

Hall of Fame Renovation moment: Finding the walls built ON TOP OF the carpets! Did the walls sink when you dug out the carpet..I wonder ;-)

I LOVE tearing up flooring! 😂 But my hubby is like yours. I ended up tearing out carpet while he was at work one day but I didn’t think to cut it into manageable sizes so instead I wrestled a whole rooms worth of carpet out our front door and that’s as far as I got. When my husband got home he had to cut it up and move it to get in the front door… 😬 but it got done!

Is your wood floor salvageable ? Sanding & staining? Make sure you paint & do repairs before the new floor😁. Hard work.

It is just plywood but yes it is salvageable in most areas.

If any of the books smell musty they could have mould or mildew problems too like the rest of the house. Furniture and fittings can be sterilised but books can't.

I would hire someone to look through the books, they have barcodes and they can scan to see what they are worth. Love the videos, my son and I are trying to make a move and find property, very expensive in Northern Florida. You guys are great.

I hate carpet tack strip removal...looks good...my aunt would probably have enjoyed your German books...she grew up in Germany & is fluent in German but books are heavy and expensive to ship so you gotta do what you gotta do...it's looking good 👍

You sounded so discouraged at one point Nate. I think you may be pushing yourself to hard. Please take a day off every week, it’s needed. Pigs need electric fence on all sides as you have learned, wire fence will never hold them. I’m excited to see what you do to the house. If you rent it out where will you live/build ? Love your channel. 😃❤️🌺

Nate hates demo. I love demo. It is hard to be excited knowing how much needs to be done sometimes and that you are the only ones to do it. We try to stay positive but this is a lot of work :)
