The first thing you do with old books is go through each one to make sure someone didn't stash cash between the pages! I read a story about someone buying a hoarder's house and before throwing out the books they went through them and the previous owner had placed cash at nearly every chapter beginning in many of the books. It was literally hundreds of thousands of dollars!!

We called that fan The Attic Fan. It’s what we used in the 1950’s before air conditioning. I was raised in Texas near the Gulf Coast. The breeze was nice, but the humidity was awful.

I wish I had an attic fan! My 1925 Freemason built house is amazing, but an attic fan would draw this heat wave heat out in the evening and pull in the cooler evening air

Yes he's amazing! One man show I found this channel from another station recommendation and find it quiet interesting. What a blessing to be able to have this much property. Yes it will be work but in the end all worth it. If you can turn some of this land into source of income for you both that would be the best part of all this. Thanks for sharing.

Where do you find a good whole house fan. We need one that is about a foot square or a foot long rectangle. Right now we used 3 old computer fans, made a frame to fit the hole and they are sucking the hot air into the attic. Powered by the range hood electricity and switch.

Sucked everything all the way up from the basement into the whole house....but man, was it LOUD !! Looking good in that house ! 👍

Nate , you look exhausted and defeated, that is a huge task and you are working your way through it so well. Hard hard work and perhaps a weekend away would do you both good, but then their are animals to tend to. You live on a paradise of land so maybe long walks and resting out in the acerage would renew the spirit and soul. Katie, your meals are amazing and I am sure Nate looks forward to those delicious plates of food at the end of the day. True enough physical exhaustion and mental are the same yet different. Either one can exhaust you. Pace yourselves and take care as it's going no where nor are the animals. Lots on both of your plates. Everything is looking good and the home is going to be amazing when you are done. Hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! God bless, get some rest!!! 🙂

That opens up the living area so much into a nice big open space with a wood-burning fireplace. I would take down that wall. It doesn’t need to be up to create a hallway. Open concept.

  • @OpenYourEars2012

Our family found the best way to use the attic fan was to only open the windows like an inch. You hand will feel when the suction is strong. Then in the morning, before the outside air warms up, close all the windows and shut blinds and the house would stay cool until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. We lived in a hot part of US with lots of humidity.

The books are holding a lot of dust, mold, odor, and insects. My sister used to work in a library and took a course on books and what they can harbor. Are the books valuable? They should be taken outside to air in the sun and you can go through them to see what condition they are in.

The 'carpet tack strip' of which you speak, is called 'smooth edge.' The padding that goes under the carpet is called 'underlay.' if you don't want to take out another wall, take the baseboards out, and cut into it on, say, a 45 degree angle, and pull it with a hooked knife, or pliers if necessary. Then put the trim back on. Sure. it'll take a bit of time, but not as much time as tearing down a whole wall and putting back trim and all that. BTW, when taking material down, cut in the corner between the wall & ceiling, as not ripping peces of paint and such, it'll be easier to patch in later. I used to do all this before retirement.

  • @mio.giardino
    @mio.giardino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

After you painted that floor white I’m pretty sure I was ready to move in 🤣😂
In your sun room, it’d be sweet if you could put in a ceramic tile that could handle moisture so you could use the space for plants etc and not worry about ruining the floor.

Glad you had someone look at the books. I did a book clean up with my friend who is a Librarian and almost all the books had to go as they had mold, which I have a feeling your books have also?
When I lived in the Midwest the house I had had a ceiling fan and it was the best. It helped so much, I’m trying to figure how to have one in my house now.

One of the houses we grew up in [we moved a lot.] had a fan like that but we called it an attic fan, I guess because it pulled the air up into the attic. It really cooled that big house though. We had no a.c. and we live in central Fl.

Yes, this house has no heat or AC. We cannot believe the previous owner taped it up and didn't use it. Would have kept him cooler.

I've seen those whole house fans in homes here in Calif. before. That was alot of work Nate. But will be nice when all done. Have a good week.

The house I grew up in had a attic fan bigger than the one you have in that house. We did not have AC. So we were happy when Mom you turn it on in the heat of the day.

Those whole house fans are awesome. My uncle was a builder and he put them in every home he built. It works well for our climates, the house gets hot but it can be cooler outside, turn on that fan. Gone for a few days, turn on that fan and cool down the house before you turn on the air conditioner. I actually want one for our house, there is a perfect spot in the hall that would work perfectly and it is just a matter of convincing my hubs to do it. Even with our windows open in the spring or fall there is just no cross ventilation at all, no breeze blows in even when it is windy outside so I want one of those bad boys! Lucky you!

After acquiring heart failure, I found the utilitarian use of a dehumidifier on wheels. I set ours under the uptake on the whole house fan. It take a few hours to change the comfort level but it is quite helpful.

Use ozon for the smell. i bought one of those apparatus, works very well, if not, use it several times. But stay away while (and couple of hours after) when in use

We are keeping the majority of it but there are about 6 different kinds in the house so the stuff that broke or didn't match we will replace.

@@TheKraemerLife, simple 1"x3" or 1"x4" boards - painted - are the way to go for baseboard, window, & door trim in older farm homes like this one, vs. expensive millwork.
Ranch trim is the WORST, from an aesthetic standpoint. Does not fit a '30s bungalow at all. It's just easier to remove a poorly installed wall or built-in than to attempt to fool around with it. You can usually re-claim & re-use most of the studs, as well. That sort of demolition of a non-load bearing wall is pretty simple stuff - fairly quick & satisfying, imho. Enjoy!

We had a whole house fan in my childhood home. If you open a window in each room about 4 or 5 inches and turn the fan on, it will remove all the musty smell and mold spores. Nothing like bringing in that fresh air!

Cut the carpet with a razor knife at an angle back under the wall seal with caulking and reinstall trim
