I saw Round Midnight in a small art theater on the first day of its release.... Only movie I've ever seen where not one person got up until every last note of the final credits.
And then, 100 people stood as one, and gave it a standing ovation.

Great comment. Small art theatres showing films like Round Midnight are rare round my way. Maybe studio 5 in a multiplex matinee with six people eating popcorn and rustling sweet paper before walking out after ten minutes. Wonderful film though.

We were living in DC in the mid 80s when this movie came out.The morning after the second time I saw it I had to take the train to Baltimore. I'm walking down the long runway to the trains, only me and the most gorgeous Elder I had ever seen. As we passed each other I nodded and she graced me with a smile. I was so enthralled by her stately beauty that I hadn't noticed the extra tall man way behind her slowly meandering down the hall was Dexter Gordon. I calmed myself. "Dexter Gordon is that you?" He stooped over and attempted to focus on me. He put out his hand accompanied by a massive grin. We shook hands, his fingers reaching halfway up my forearm. I said, "Man, I just saw "'round Midnight" last night. You know you're alive just to bear witness, right?" He straightened up and reared back so far for a moment I thought he might fall backwards. He said something completely unintelligible, somehow stayed on his feet and impossibly grinned even more broadly. He was still rumbling something as he walked away. Dex was completely drunk at 6:40 in the morning. I stood there watching him ever so slowly heel-toeing away. The gorgeous Elder was waiting for him. As Dex approached her she took his arm and asked, "What did he say? Did he like the movie?" I could not make out Dex's response and wondered whether she could, but I watched them 'til they turned out of sight into the train station. I would not have cared if I had missed my train.

    • @mharm1017

Yes, Dexter Gordon and the gorgeous Elder were dressed immaculately; both in suits and top coats. He had on a pork pie hat pushed back exposing his wrinkled forehead and raised eyebrows.

As this scene wonderfully shows, Dexter Gordon was, among other things, one of the great ballad players in all of Jazz. Over & over, one catches oneself holding one's breath in a kind of suspense, waiting to hear how he will turn each new phrase into something that seems musically inevitable & emotionally true, the very moment it's complete--which he invariably does.

At 1:56 is a cameo by Francis Paudras
whose book Dance of the Infidels: A Portrait of Bud Powell was used as the basis for this film Round Midnight.
Instead of a pianist like in the book, Dexter Gordon, a friend of Bud Powell was able to play the character but as a saxophonist.
The book is a great insight into what the jazz scene was like in Europe. And says a lot about the author's integrity, he and his wife took in Bud Powell as a family member
and looked after him and became his guardian the story is real testament to friendship and the love Paudras had for the music.
A film about Bud Powell and the original Paudras story on screen would be really great.
It is sad when a great innovator who gave their life completely to the art form and transforms that art form and then dies destitute.
cheers to you Bud Powell and Francis Paudras!

Dude, there are more years of history and experience behind that tone than you've lived and probably will live. He is telling a story with every breath. Also FYI, Dex was very sick during the shooting of this movie, but he hauled it out there like a man every day. Now go back to your Kenny G and Najee CDs and c8me back in about 20 years, after learned enough to contribute to the conversation.
