In this episode, we give an update on this year's garden: it did not do too well. For next year, we plan on moving the garden next to the sugar shack where there is already a big clearing. We purchase a second-hand greenhouse and build it down by our sugar shack to use for next year's garden. We also build some much needed storage space. This includes a dresser with two drawers and a cubby hole for the mezzanine to store our clothes, some shelves on the porch to store our hardware and tools, and finally some nails on the side of the cabin to store bigger tools like saws and axes.
Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!

You may want to bury some chicken wire about 12 inches deep around the perimeter of your greenhouse to keep the burrowing creatures out.

If you can possibly top up your raised beds with well rotted mushroom manure, this fall, it will continue to rot over the winter and will be in fabulous shape for next spring. You should see better yields. Also, you can treat your beds now with lime to neutralise the acidic soil. Be sure to check on the amounts needed so you don’t create a different problem.
Hanging your tools outside will get rusty. Get some 0000 steel wool . Rub them down with it , wipe clean with a dry clothe, then rub a light weight oil on them to help prevent more rust. This should be done every so often through out the year. Love the progress you have done so far. Stay Warm ! Old man winter isn’t that far away unless you have him knocking on your door already. 👍👍😊

If you lubricate the bottom of the drawer, where the slides are, with soap, they will slide out easier.
Nice cabinet. Add some wax or bar soap to the bottom sides of each drawer and they will slide better when full.

My wife and I have been renovating an old watermill for 14 years.
We use traditional building materials as much as possible and try to avoid synthetic building materials as much as possible.
I noticed that you filled the joints with cement mortar. Cement is a very good building material, but it has little diffusivity and is very hard. There is a very good alternative called natural hydraulic lime. Try this, it's just as resistant to frost, but much more flexible and ten times more diffusible than cement. It dries the wood in the contact area and protects it from weathering. As an alternative to rock wool, there is soft wood fiber flex insulation, which is better for the lungs. The mineral fibers cannot be broken down by the body and can lead to lung diseases. I can recommend linseed oil varnish as an alternative to clear varnish.

When I saw you starting to pound nails into the side wall for a couple of tools, I thought “well..that’s kinda low-rent. Tools will get all rusty out there.” But then.. it looks REALLY cool and home-spun. Just keep them oiled and sharp. Nice work friends. 🤛🏻⛏️🛠️🪚🔨🪓🪜🇺🇸😄
Ahahah it is a temporary solution until we build a tool shed ;) but yeah, it looks kinda cool, it’s just not very good for the rust, like you mentioned 😅
We had fun guessing what the dresser was going to be, turned out quite ingenious. Have a suggestion that is really easy. Actually two but the first would take a little work now that the drawers are sized and fit. If you had the clearance (or wanted to make some with a plane), the drawers would operate nicely if you drove two big thumb takes on the bottom of each side ( so that the friction surface would be drastically reduced). The other idea goes along with it and that is to rub a candle generously on the runners, everywhere that is a friction point. You will be amazed how much that helps. Love the greenhouse but I fear that the base was not pressure treated wood? Oh well, it's really gonna be nice to grow stuff even in cold weather.
I was going to suggest rubbing a bar of soap on the runners for the same reason!
We did smooth the runner, but never thought about the wax! Smart idea, we’ll keep in mind if we ever need to fix the drawers :) as always, thanks Dave!!

just a little tip nick it is very unwise to leave your tools out in the weather and in the humidity that includes your screws and every other metal object, so you might want to consider an alternative as soon as possible…! by the way, I really really enjoy watching you and your girlfriend build your dream cabin. I really wish you both Health and long life. And again for your own sake, keep your tools and everything else metal in a dry place. Otherwise you will have. rusty tools and whatever else made out of metal that you leave it outside and even on your porch is not a good place for keeping your screws and other metal objects as we all well, know tools aren’t cheap.☝️ God bless you both.🙏😉😊👋
Tools aren’t cheap indeed!! We have been wanting to build a work shed and tool shed since the beginning of this build ahaha i think it’s time we get to it, now that the cabin is almost done :)

Yup those are bald faced hornets and they will put a hurting on you if you want to get rid of them just wait until it gets cold and put a black trash bag around the nest and seal it air tight and secure with tape and leave it alone for a while and you have yourself decorations for the cabin if you want. good job y'all 👍

I applaud you both for wearing protective footwear while you're lifting tree limbs, logs etc. - anything that could do damage if dropped on your foot or ankles. I see so many in saldals Croc's just asking for problems.
My hubby and I really love your videos and don’t even mind when we watch them out of order. Quick question for Marla: what is the brand of the pants you wear? They seem comfortable and durable and I bet they’d be great for hiking.
The pants are from the company Prana. They have been very resistant so far :) if you get some, may i suggest you get ones without an elastic waist. They loosen up with time. Unless you don’t mind changing elastics once a year, then they’re great!

Suggestion: 2 Stop Ur Geen House From Blowing Away. Unscrew & Remove Ur Green House. In The (2) Side 4x4's, Drill (3) 3/4" Holes 6" In From The Ends & 1 In The Middle. Then Drive 3' Long 3/4" Rebar. Then Reattach Ur Green House With 3" Long > Truss Head < Screws...

A cheap and easy fix for acidic soil is wood ash. Wood ash is extremely alkaline and will correct the acidity in your raised beds. Make yourself a firepit, burn some hardwood and then incorporate the ash into your beds. Plus, the ash is full of organic minerals. Also, it might be worth it to keep a few chickens on your property, obviously in a fenced area with a coop. Not only will you get the healthiest protein that you can produce (if they range), you'll get plenty of manure. There is nothing on earth quite like chicken manure to supercharge your soil.

That wood under the greenhouse is going to rot fast. You need to blacken or char the wood you put on the ground. Just blacken it over an open fire. This helps repel insects and gives it a little natural protection from rotting.

I doubled the size of my log cabin which was an 1815 original poplar cabin. We added a great room and I built the stone walk in fireplace. It was two stories and I had gathered the stones from a farmers field in exchange for his offer of the flagstone floor in the basement of the abandoned house on his land. Win win! I loved that fireplace and miss it a lot. It is hard to leave something you put your all into. Great work you two!!!🏡
29:29 After seeing how your chinking sucks up water, I would look into something to seal it. If it absorbs said water, then freezes, blow outs and cracks will result.

Indeed, our first full time winter! We’re behind on firewood sadly, so it’s more stressful than exciting for now ;) hopefully we get it done before snow !
Rub some candle wax on the bottom of your cabinet draws and draw gliders. 😉Should help the draws to move easier.

was well thought out. It helps to tidy things up there and we all can use extra storage. Loved the front porch shelves again

And if you decide to make a toolbox use on the lid, and the box itself some waterproof insulation so when you close the lid, your tools will be protected Because that also helps keep the moisture from getting inside.
Awesome set of Drawers there... if you run into moisture causing slight swelling and your drawers sticking... just rub Soap on the Rails... glides smooth

A viewer has suggested burying a wire fence around the outside to keep burrowing animals from getting inside the GH, which is a great tip! As far as the hornets are concerned, you chose wisely to stay away from their hive! 👌 The size of the nest suggests a large army who will chase you relentlessly and sting to protect it's queen. 😮😢

The nest is indeed a crazy size, the biggest we’ve seen! According to the internet, that type of hornet have up to 5 queens and a few hundreds workers. So breaking that nest would’ve been a horrible experience 😅

I think you have to reinforce the roof of your greenhouse, you getting a lot of snow in the winter, the roof in the current conditions won’t make it. This is just my opinion.

100%! Since we won’t be growing anything inside this winter, we’re thinking of just taking the roof panels off and putting them back in spring, when temperatures go up and can melt the snow inside quickly!

27 celcius hot come to Australia mate. its 37c here today was 39c yesterday but no humidity so it makes a difference.
Is the greenhouse robust for wind, snowfall and large animals like deer, bear or wolves? May need chicken mesh around the base to prevent burrowing animals like rabbits/raccoons/squirrels getting in. Year round use or seasonal (spring to fall)? Any plans for heat and irrigation water?
There is enough compostable material to add to the raised bed soil to increase the ph if required. Materials like: wood ash, yard leaf compost, kitchen compost, wood chips/mulch/sawdust, moss, peat moss, grass,lots of small twigs and branches. Start now in preparation for next season. Also add bottom layers of corrugated pieces as a weed barrier, water absorber and compostable material. Mix in wood bark shavings.

Yes, those were bald faced hornets. I had a nest just like that in an apple tree in my front yard. I had considered removing it on my own. Thank goodness I didnt. I had an exterminator remove it. He told me bald face hornets are vicious.

Having the greenhouse straight on the soil is going to be a painful weeding process in the spring and summer... The grass and hay and all other weeds grow like 10 times faster inside the greenhouse than out of it... Be away for like a week or two and it's full of 6 feet weeds... been there done that. Now I have concrete floor in my greenhouse. No more struggling with the weeds. It's crazy how fast the weeds grow in the greenhouse compared to like tomatoes and cucumbers... it's a never ending process if you're not living next to the greenhouse.
6 feet weeds ahaha sound awful already ! For now, we just wanted to try gardening with a greenhouse, see if we like it. If we do, we’re thinking of just building a bigger one with recycled materials on a concrete slab, like you mentioned ! We’re hoping to make it insulated enough too that we can continue to grow food during the winter months :)
