You are aware that shelters will euthanize animals just because it is a particular breed (pitbull) and when they are overcrowded, and when the animal has been there longer than 1 month, right? Before they had euthanasia drugs they had guns, and a lot of places still do use guns. Then the dogs are stored in a freezer until they can be cremated in bulk. You kids really have no idea.

I'm in upstate New York and can confirm that this was one of those "10 o'clock" commercials (you know the type) that played goddamn CONSTANTLY.
When I lived in rural California, literally same. People forget, California is one of the biggest agricultural states. The coast is all cities, but the inland is a rural wasteland that wants so badly to be like the South. This commercial was an "every day after school" experience for me.

Fun fact about those terrible anti-smoking ads. They only actually exist because big tobacco is forced to spend a certain amount on PSAs every year, but they are in control of what's in them. So they purposefully make them terrible so that they don't work.

They have to give money to a charitable foundation that makes the PSAs, but the tobacco manufacturers don't control the content of the ads. That wouldn't make sense -- they could just air a black screen in that case

It's been over 15 years since I saw them as a kid and I still vividly remember them unlike basically every other candy commercial I've seen. I mean I already liked Starbursts before I saw it, but it being that memorable has to count for something.

This reminds me of when I took a scriptwriting class in college. All the work we did was short copy kinda stuff, new segments and commercials and that sorta thing. I started doing this thing where I ended a commercial with a dude holding a gun up to a baby and saying "buy it or the kid dies." Then I just sort of kept forcing that into the end of everything I wrote for that class. Got an A in it btw.

Watching old commercials is such an encapsulation of the era they came from. There's something pretty cool about seeing old ones I've never seen before from way back, or from just before I was really watching TV as a kid. Love this sorta stuff.
