How GM Dominated the Modern HD Truck Market

  • Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the heavy-duty truck market exploded as Dodge began implementing the use of Cummins engines and Ford continued to develop their IDI engines. By 1994, Dodge was seeing redesigned their trucks and saw massive success and by 1999, Ford had released their all new Super Duty F-series trucks.
While Ford was enjoying also enjoying massive new success with their new platform and impressive 7.3L Powerstroke engine they introduced earlier in the 90s, GM was hard at work developing a new platform, an entirely new truck with a new drivetrain and engine with the hopes of blowing the doors off of both Dodge and Ford.
And that's exactly what they did in the coming years.

Ya i dnt see any gm/chevy towing heavy. All i see hauling big loads 17K + is dodge and ford. I drive a 18 3500 cummins high output with a few things done and a built tranny and i tow between 17k and about 30k regularly hauling equipment for work and my dodge does it beautifuly. I drove my bosses 2022 ford 3500 because he wanted me to "see how awsome it was". I will say it makes great powe. I'd still put a tuner, exhaust, & air intake on it. But the real problem is there damb exhaust brake. It does pretty much nothing compared to my cummins. I live in northern California in the mountains and with out the exhaust brake towing that kinda weight youll smoke your brake pretty damb quick.

Everybody I know who runs a hotshot rid run Dodge right now.
I was looking to get into hot shotting, so I called this one company and talked to them, I told them that I was planning on running a Superduty and they told me they don't hire on anyone running anything but Dodge or a Ford with a cat swap.
Now this was 5 or 6 years ago at the least, so all of that may have changed, I don't know.
I ended up buying a box truck and later a couple of single axle Freightliners with sleepers before my business went bust.

@@nathanwoten6236 Oh my goodness gracious, what did we all do before exhaust brakes?!?! I’ve never smoked a set of brakes in my life, and haven’t had anything with an exhaust brake until last year. It’s a 22 Chevy and it holds speed with or without the camper behind it. Just because it won’t slow you down (whether you want to slow down or not) doesn’t make it bad. Also, I’m on the interstates a lot and I see plenty of GM duallies pulling hotshot.

It is a rarity to see a GMHD with a US DOT number pulling anything. The most I see a GM HD pulling is a camper owned by a private individual. Im a mechanic in the rust belt, i see all types of trucks come in. In my experience, ive seen more GM frames, half ton or fully boxed HD, rotted out than any other trucks. GMs nox-rust wax coating is not adequate for protection in salty states. I had a beautiful 2014 2500HD Duramax in the other week, 107,000 miles, frame is scaley, rusty, and rear leaf spring brackets rusted out. Not even 10 years old. If you have a 1500, youll probably eventually have to do a cam and lifters when the DOD craps out. Overall these are good trucks but have their faults. In my opinion, buy a 2500 without DOD and keep up on the wax frame coating (they sell touch up cans) and it will last forever

GM domination in heavy duty? I see Ford/Dodge towing way more often than GM. I won’t deny they look good but where I’m at it’s a rarity to see a GM over the other two
