  • I stand by my statements past, that center lock wheels are not an option you should ever want on a street car. Here is what happens when a simple several hundred dollar tire change turns into a $100k nightmare.

      Agree. I had a really bad situation that costed me extra money. My oil pan had a type of cap from a radiator on It that was rubber. Fucked up thing Is this was the first oil change I had done at a shop In a long time and they told me nothing about how my oil plug was missing and basically stripped the bolt and decided to put that cap on and once I noticed I went back and got It fixed. But since I had no proof since that was the first oil change done to that car since I had bought It only a week earlier I had to pay for It. Now I am 100% sure that was some shady shit and won't be going back to that shop anymore. I thought I had found a good one but I was wrong, I found another one now that I have had an A/C compressor replaced on only so far, I won't be going for something simple I can do on my own ever again.

    Partial owners fault with the information provided. When you have a vehicle like this, don't just take it to any old shop because of price or location. I mean maybe it was an emergency, but still. Painful and costly mistake for everyone. If they can afford the car, and a lawyer to go after the shop, they can proably afford to take it to a dealership or speciality shop. (And any speciality shop should have the insurance coverage for total loss of any super car.)

    • @sergiowolfpac
      @sergiowolfpac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Partial owner's fault? If the shop wasn't able to do it, they shouldn't have accepted the car in the first place. Since they even had the tools to remove the wheels, I'm sure this wasn't the first center lock wheels they've encountered. It wasn't torqued correctly. It doesn't take any kind of special skills to look up torque specs for a car and torque it down correctly.

      @@schultz787 as it said in the video, this shop may not be insured for that level of damages either. We don't have enough info really. But I'm willing to bet if the shop cant cover a $100k bill with insurance, they shouldn't work on cars like that (but many smaller shops need to hire cheap labor, and can't afford to turn away any work). While it's not necessarily a customers responsibility to ask what the insurance is on lost or damaged cars (and vinwki has nightmare stories about under insured transporters), but you can get an idea about a place by the type and condition the building/equipment and customers cars are in before bringing your highly specialized Porche there.

    FYI. The the lock in the center of the wheel bolt is there to prevent the wheel bolt from backing off when installed correctly. The wheel can be fully Torqued to 445 lb/ft and if stil not be in safety. That lock has to be in a fully out position to actually be considered locked. Kind of hard to explain but I’ve seen plenty of wheels torqued by none Porsche techs but not in the actual locked position. Also that safety lock is not what prevents the wheel from spinning against the hub . The hub has 5 studs sticking out that locks into the wheels . Rob explained it incorrectly.

    As someone who works at a dealership, dealerships want your car in and out as fast as possible to keep mechanic bays open. They won’t take the time to individually inspect parts and only charge you for what ACTUALLY needs replacing. If one thing goes, the whole system goes. If you have the money, sure go for it. The mechanic who does the work will go home with a husky commission and feed himself well for awhile. If you’re not willing to get bent by a dealership, inspect the parts yourself and only replace what is required.

    I have the joy of working with Porsche centerlocks on an almost daily basis. The missing piece you talk about is actually the safety lock to prevent the nut from rotating/losing torque, when not missing many people dont make sure it's engaged properly and end up stripping the spline on it and nut. I have a pile of centerlock parts that are damaged or beyond Porsches recommended track life.

      @@noahmich21 Dude, READ what you wrote and what I was responding to. You said "Can’t do 25lbs with ur hands". Anyone can do 25 lbs with their hands. 25 lbs is unit of force, NOT torque. If you wrote 25 ft-lbs then that would be different and I would have agreed. Are you stupid, or... are you stupid? I told you that in my response. Torque is NOT just lbs. It's force over distance. "Lbs" alone that's force buddy. Totally different. Seriously, go up to ANY engineer and say "so, how hard is it to apply 25 lbs of torque?" and any competent one will laugh at you. They'll ask you "you mean 25 ft-lbs?", heck it could be anything even 25 in-lbs. WTF do you mean?"

    • @anonypersona3189
      @anonypersona3189 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Saying "25 lbs" of torque is just as bad as saying "25 ft" of torque. Both are equally wrong and equally ridiculous. You need BOTH units: Force AND distance to describe torque. Torque does not exist without the other. If you leave one unit off, you're talking about a TOTALLY different thing. Don't blame your ignorance/stupidity for my reading comprehension. PS: in-lbs is also a VERY common unit of torque measurement... and 25 in-lbs is different than 25 ft-lbs... saying 25 lbs and thinking that's torque proves to me you have zero clue what you're talking about.

    Steve Lehto's Yutube channel is going through a 4-part series about an old case that started with a tire and wheel shop screwing up someone's car, then refusing to make it right. The tire shop lost the case but refused to pay, so Lehto got a judgement, the sheriffs waltzed over and grabbed tire shop property to the value of the judgement against the guy, sold them at auction, and Lehto and his client were paid. Now, well over 6 years later, the tire shop is suing Lehto, deputies, the judge, and the neighborhood cat for anything and everything, but none of it is legal, mostly because the statute of limitations has run out. Talk about a twisted tale. Heck even I got screwed by a name brand shopv- I took my car (with a brand new battery) in to have a bearing replaced, but could not pick it up until payday on Friday. When I got there, it would barely turn over, so I opened the hood and my brand new Wards 5-year top line battery was gone, replaced by a motorcycle battery. Grrr. They refused to make it right. The even stole the battery receipt from the glove compartment. It was a Midas Muffler shop.

    I'm not sure I've ever taken even my "lowly" NSX to a tire shop, or even a shop I trust just to do tires. 100% of the time I just put it in the air at my house, and take the wheels/tires somewhere. Typically they get worked quicker since there's no car taking up a bay, and I get to use my own torque wrench to re-install them on the car. Even then, I had an alignment shop remove a wheel to fix a tie rod they messed up, and didn't torque the wheel down when they reinstalled it. Fortunately I noticed the wobble as I was passing another shop, who graciously let me borrow a jack and torque wrench in their parking lot to check things and tighten the wheel. Moral of the story: It's hard to find good help. Hope your friend gets some satisfaction out of his legal action.

    I am more amazed you found an independent tire shop that would touch centerlocks. Whether it’s an old Jag with a lead hammer, or a H1 with CTIS, most smart independents know it’s not worth the risk. Im guessing what happened here was the wheel was not seated on the dowel pins. Porsche’s system won’t let the wheel come off even if it’s under torqued as long as it’s seated properly and the retainer engages. Don’t let 19yr olds work on cars like that. Maybe start by bringing them a Carrera and see if they can put the center cap on correctly before you trust them.

    For all those saying the car shouldn't be taken to a tire shop, it entirely depends on the tire shop. I know of several racers that use a particular shop because they mount and balance tires for high speed race conditions with the proper valve stems and attention to detail. I would rather use that shop than any of the dealerships I have dealt with. Not because a dealer can't do it but because you know exactly what you are going to get with that shop.
    Some shops are the opposite.
    The owner of this Porsche obviously did not know the difference.

    Haha! Good luck with using just your hand to get 45 ft. lbs.!!! With a foot long ratchet on that nut it would need 45 lbs of force. No way to do it by hand. Hand will do 1 or 2 ft lbs. I think someone zipped em down with an impact and forgot to go back and torque them or thought the impact would make it tight enough. Probably had adapters on the impact too. 1/2 in. impact with an adapter or two would tighten to 45 imho. Edit: or they didnt want to use air on such an expensive car and just never torqued them after using whatever to snug them.
