Quick Tip: If the "Manage display settings" option isn't available (at least on legion laptops) you need to select "hybrid mode" for the Graphics in your manufacturer's software (or the equivalent). If you use dGPU mode the option will NOT be there
Thanks so much for the explanation. Much more clearer to understand. Btw it is possible to add a shortcut in the task bar for Optimus, Automatic and GPU only. Right in the settings tabs in Nvidia control panel
You were right... I did think the Ultimate mode was to enable discrete GPU because in one of the reviews I watched of Armoury Crate they said "Oh I have to reboot but if you have Advanced Optimus you don't need to reboot to switch between integrated and dedicated graphics", which was misleading. I knew Optimus was not Advanced Optimus but I thought my laptop probably does not have Advanced Optimus because I don't see any option named Advanced Optimus, only Optimus. Thanks for making it clear, I bet there is a lot of confusion here! The Ultimate mode does allow me to set the framerate to dynamic between 120Hz and 240Hz, which is something I also didn't know was possible but I was looking for it, because I sometimes want to use 120Hz for games that don't reach 240Hz anyways but go past 60.
If you use automatic select with HDR on it causes the screen to go black sometimes, i waited 5 minutes one time so rebooting is the only option i guess?
Thank you for the video. I want to ask a question. When you're on NVIDIA GPU Only mode, are you still able to use brightness slider in windows? In my case, my slider is greyed out. I don't really know why, but in display settings in windows, when using NVIDIA GPU Only mode, the laptop is detecting the laptop display as an external monitor. Really appreciate the response since I don't know how to fix it.
So Optimus = dGPU --> iGPU --> Display. If laptop have mux switch hardware = dGPU/iGPU --> switch --> Display, but everytime you switch, you need to restart Advance optimus = switch w/o need to restart ? Edit : also, even if your laptop have the mux switch, you STILL CAN choose your dGPU to passthrough the iGPU first and then the display (Optimus), which actually mean the mux switch is useless, in this case....why?
I have a second display but when i conntect it to the laptop which is a15 4050 ryzen 7 7735hs in it automatic select and nvidia gpu only options closeing and it automaticly selects optimus mode. (Sorry for my bad English)

One important question for dummies like me lol. So when you get Optimus OFF, and run on Discrete Graphics, BUT your laptop is plugged in.. will the wattage increase drain the battery or do any harm to it BEING THE LAPTOP PLUGGED IN WHILE GAMING regardless? or is it a rule fo thumb that while gaming and plugged in to an outlet, one should always run on Discrete Graphics? Hope i explained myself properly hehe
i have Msi GE76, wasnt expecting to not find manage display option in a expensive laptop, tried both in Igpu and Dgpu mode. anyone know if it doesnt show what to do?
My 'automatic select' is greyed out on my legion slim 7i after I tried nvidea gpu only mode on nvidea control panel. The vantage software is set to hybrid. What do i do ?
Wrong! Its on Automatic, this is what is called advanced Optimus. Asus writes: Most of our 2023 laptops support a smarter MUX Switch called NVIDIA Advanced Optimus. Instead of having to toggle the MUX back and forth manually, NVIDIA Advanced Optimus can automatically switch between the direct GPU mode (aka Ultimate) and NVIDIA's Optimus mode (aka MSHybrid). That way, when you play a game, your laptop will automatically route frames in the most efficient way possible, no manual toggling or reboot required. To do this, click the arrow in Windows' notification area, right-click the NVIDIA icon, and select the NVIDIA Control Panel. In the left sidebar, navigate to Manage Display Mode and set the display mode to Automatic Select. Your laptop will choose the best mode for you in any given scenario, as long as you're plugged in to a wall socket.
Yeah, says 'wrong' because probably only watched the first 5 minutes, and misses the second part. It's good to know that the Asus settings don't use advanced optimus but their own mux-switch though (because it wants to reboot). There simply is no need for it anymore, and that's a good explanation of the first 5 minutes.
Thank you for the video. I want to ask a question. When you're on NVIDIA GPU Only mode, are you still able to use brightness slider in windows? In my case, my slider is greyed out. @@DcopyninjaYThi I got the exact same model and I cant see the manage display mode option in nvidia control panel. What options did you use in asus armory crate?
So don't use armoury crate options, use automatic select from nvidia control panel.. I was perplexed as to why games can't detect gsync or nvidia reflex until I switch to nvidia only.. that fixed it without compromising battery.. they should put a warning in armoury crate that their settings suck
I've noticed this happen a few times, not consistently. a reboot usually solves it so I'm not quite sure what is causing it, because sometimes it simply is not an issue at all, playing for long periods of time, and other times I see it start to hitch pretty badly and it won't stop until reboot. Could be bad drivers, or armoury crate doing something stupid. It isn't a chronic issue like it was on the 2022 version though.

Hey, i bought an asus tuf a15 ryzen 9 5900hx with 3060 gpu 5-6 days back. Unfortunately it doesn't have a mux switch so my gpu is not being utilised fully and games like valorant are only giving me 140-150 fps and according to these specs and by check on other youtube videos i should be getting atleast 250 fps in game (in between fights). Can you please help me with it?
Can somebody help me out here? Omen 17 RTX 3070TI I turn on the auto select thingy and it does in fact use the iGPU instead of the Dedicated unless I have a game open and all that however!! (and this is seriously freaking me out) whenever the NVIDIA GPU is "Inactive" (it even says so in the taskbar icon thing, saying that no programs are using the device) it's CONSTANTLY drawing ~30W and I checked GPU-Z, Aida64, HWMonitor, HWInfo, and they all say the same thing, crazy fluctuations between 5W 200mhz clock and 30-40w 1410mhz clock with 2% constant vram usage, I noticed this as my laptop drains from 100% battery @ 72wh in like 40-60 minutes! Again all signs say that the card is ASLEEP even the omen gaming hub says its inactive *though it does sometimes flicker on and off*
So, understand for a second how bad this is. I had my laptop on ultimate mode for a long time. This caused TONS of performance issues with a lot of games I played. I thought it was just my laptop... but then once day I turned ultimate off, and suddenly all my performance issues are gone. And I found out about the advanced optimus/mux thing. The only reason why I'm watching it is because I've been having some issues with some games (counter strike has micro stutter and black ops 6 is completely fd. Gave me 150/160 fps with micro stutter but now I've reinstalled nvidia app and repaired black ops, it's giving me 85/140, benchmark claims my cpu is 99% bottlenecking 12700h and 4060. it turned ultimate on and it's behaving a little better for both games. Honestly, no one can get their sh together. Asus, Nvidia nor publishers like activision. Like why the f is framegen not there in MP? Why doesn't DLSS or FSR work properly? Why doesn't DLSS work at all when you turn on sharpening? Why is it so insanely CPU heavy? I don't get any of it. It's annoying. I just want a stable 120/140 fps without micro stutter. I do play on an external screen but for games I always use 1440 or even 1080p for competitive ones. (it's a 4k 240hz display, way overkill)
Everything's on point... But if u turn everything on manual mode than the laptop wont be able to optimise properly and the battery will drain faster... I wouldn't recommend anybody to do dis... U should only do dis once u know how laptops and devices works.... Gpu consumes lots and lots of power as compared to integrated graphics... So if somethings running smoothly on integrated graphics while using the power efficiently than why would someone want yo switch to gpu mode only which consumes more wattage??... Is there any point in doing so??... Really ders no point... When u r playing games dts understandable but no one plays games all day long...
You bring up a good point that people don't usually go over in videos such as mine here... Yes you will use a lot more power doing this, so its great for when you are plugged in and gaming, but do set your power saving settings back when done or you won't be happy with the heat and extra power consumption. Great point. Thanks.
