ExcelHedge Right exactly. If this is something that really bothers her then she needs to reevaluate her options. Outback is not really a posh establishment. Maybe she should take her 10 years experience and get really friendly with some high end restaurants. No stingy church pricks are going to a $100+ per plate restaurant. Trust me.

This is ludicrous. I only tip for full service restaurants. I don’t tip for takeout, buffets, or places where I have to stand in line to order, refill my own drinks, pack my own to go boxes, pick my own table, etc. I work hard for my money. Im definitely not entitled to the money I have to work hard for, neither should any server. I earn my money. I’m not your employer, I’m not responsible to make sure you pay your bills. You do realize that it's quite possible that each individual location is managed separately also likely to be franchises as well... There is a very good chance that her location pays low hoping customers will tip high.
I have worked in a coffee shop where I made tips but if I speak to 99% of former employees of said coffee shop branches and separate locations around the country they will have a different experience. It was actually abnormal for the coffee shop that I worked for to have tips in locations that were not run by our particular franchise owner who owned several locations in our city and neighboring cities.
So remember just because you had one experience does not invalidate the experiences of other workers from different locations.
I'm not saying this to justify tipping culture but she might not be lying. After all if she had been lying why would she take it so public on social media knowing that it could likely get her fired and possibly draw media attention the way that it has.

Bring the min wage issue up to your boss. The whole low wage issue is between the owners and the staff. Now this toxic culture has shifted it to a customer/waiter conflict. Don't be fooled. Make restaurant owners pay more. Stop shaming customers for not tipping enough before everyone stops going to the restaurants. This pandemic is a good opportunity/lesson for restaurant owners to change their practices. If you want to increase menu prices to compensate for it, do it, and see how long you will stay in business. There are plenty of smart owners who can pay more to staffs and charge reasonable prices for food. If you can't complete, shut it down.

I completely rely on tips so if I spend half my shift preparing an $800 order with no tip I just worked really hard for free. Back when I worked in a restaurant, Wait staff would have to tip out to other workers.
Example: Say you leave a $5 tip. $1 to bartender, $1 to other wait staff, $1 to bus person(s), and maybe depending on where you live $1 tip to the house (restaurant itself). Leaving the one that did the work for $1.00.
Now the wait staff pool their tips and every one gets equal amount no matter how much or little they work.
the good wait staff that help customers get the same amount in tips as the one that is in the corner talking on the phone leaning on the wall.
At least some Non-American restaurants in Japan state that tipping is rude. And is not expected.

I had a conversation with my daughter recently when she acted entitled to tips. She was upset because her manager moved her from a waitress position a few times and put her back in the kitchen because they were short in the kitchen. She complained to me that that cost her however much in tips and was asking for my advice on how to approach that situation. I told her she gets paid an hourly wage that she agreed to in order to work there. Tips are not part of any contractual agreement. If the manager needs you back in the kitchen, you work in the kitchen and be grateful you have a job. It's never appropriate to expect tips or to complain when you don't get them.
