"Being woke" has very little to do with this reality, the decline started since the 2000's. I would argue that the lack of a strong "cash culture" (unlike japan) has done more damage to new artists since we are less likely to buy physical copies or merch.

      Like Nobi said, Mangaka lifestyle is very unhealthy and long hours and low pay usually. Even Mangaka like oda of one piece fame got sick from overworking himself. Such lifestyle is not healthy and in the long run can be very damaging to not just your body but also mind.. Especislly if you're not superfamous and rich
      /talented like oda. For every Oda, there's probably tens or even hundreds of thousands of low paid assistants and unknown and unpaid or low paid aspiring mangaka like Nobi. Just being mangaka is hard enough and u healthy enough on the body, but they even need to get a second job to support their passion of being a mangaka, which adds even more stress and takes away even more time from your deadline which is already hard to meet for many published mangakas of even well known series, even with lots of assistants helping full time.

    Tokiwaso is a reference to a famous apartment building that housed legendary manga artists like Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori, Fujiko Fujio, Hideki Mizuno and many more. The building was demolished in 1982 but rebuilt in 2020 as a museum.

      Just visited the museum last weekend as it's near where I live. Fascinating place. Very humble accommodations but the creative energy going on there must have been amazing at the time. If you go I recommend getting ramen at the restaurant they all went to nearby called "Matsuba" which has illustrations but many past and current mangaka on the walls.

      Hey, I started to draw with 24 and 8 years later I'm a full time artist and do this for a living. Many of my colleagues started at a similar age. 25 definitely isn’t too late, no matter what your art goals are. :)

    These shared house arrangements are interesting and seem to be unique to Japan. Are there any other professions that provide these kinds of opportunities? How do they work - when do you apply, how do you find out about them, are they highly competitive? I think this would make a great video to understand more about how people in Japan transition from academic to professional work.

    • @higon99
      @higon99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can think of this one as just a themed share-house "business" with professional career advisers. Nearly everyone can start living there but so far 80% of 700 participants has kinda dropped out. Tokiwa-so project featured in this video is operated by multiple for-profit and NPO entities (which do dormitory/consulting/school businesses for aspiring creatives). It's a well-spirited and affordable scheme with pretty housing, but it's actually nothing to do with a real Tokiwa-so and those famed mangakas came out from it in the past. It's still a business.
      There's also other Tokiwa-so housing project which is supported by Toshima city of Tokyo. It's a super cheap housing program for talented. Its only apartment is very old but it's the real one, and advisers are not as aggressive as NPO's. I think each city(district) of Tokyo has some programs working with local NPOs to support young creatives. You can google it (sample keywords "Tokyo Artpoint Project", "Tokyo Art Navigation", "Tokyo Arts Council"). I still think best way for their carrier should be to enroll into college/uni first, then, while you are still in school, apply for these local programs, not after graduation. Being jobless is hard mentally. Let's rephrase this without fear, it's a modern day employment support program by NPO and gov, you see these healthy young artists didn't have any job after the graduation. That's not gooood.

      @d.n.8919 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here in America, there are lots of opportunities for visual artists and writers to pursue "residencies," which typically last from a few weeks to a year. The ones that provide housing at no cost and a living stipend are often very competitive to get, but aspiring and established creatives alike often take advantage of residencies to propel their careers.

    • @samaraisnt
      @samaraisnt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@d.n.8919 A residency is soooo different from this. It's a working live-in artists residency, like a doctor's residency, you are working the whole time. You have to submit your thesis/project plan and execute it, it's not like this at all. Like you said they're temporary, not real living arrangements. They are more using artists to improve the environment of their business by having you create/leave art there more than helping to catapult their success. You must be well established to even get those so it likewise doesn't work as a parallel to mangaka shared housing. There's true artists accomodation but they're very rare. Please don't mislead naive young artists :)
