I would love to see a weekly cleaning video! My home, as a whole is somewhere between a 4-6 right now. However, we did a major declutter this summer in our master bedroom and I now feel like it is at an 8-9. I am now working in the living room. I work full time as well as help my mom often. My father has passed away, I have no siblings and she has health issues. In the past, I’ve set huge goals and failed. So, for 2020, my goal is to work at least 30 minutes a day decluttering/organizing, etc. until I get the job done. I realize it is only January 04, but it is amazing how much I’ve gotten done in the two hours allotted.
Your 10 rules are the most useful guidelines I've ever seen. Common sense and specific to getting the job done. Helps me believe that I can actually conquer house management.
Great video! Great tips! I’ve been married to a hoarder for 38 years; he doesn’t even see filth. But, since downsizing a year ago, I’ve put my “ foot down” and vowed to never live in that type of environment again. This meant many LOUD arguments have ensued, as I insisted on keeping our house tidy. But, strangely enough, he’s starting to keep his space neater , and I heard him admit to a neighbor that he kind of likes walking into a clutter-free house! And, to answer your question, I’d rate my current home a 7-8; same as you... ( I wish I did this years ago, as it may have helped my grown children be neater. I hope it’s not too late for them to learn.)

I have been decluttering my home for the last 18 months. Your channel has helped me with this journey. I have also been on a low buy for the last 9 months. It feels so freeing to not over spend and have a more peaceful home. Thank you!
husband has put me on a spending/buying freeze. and I am glad. I need to be more mindful and less cluttery. Thanks Melissa. Best Wishes for all good things in 2020 for you Riley and Chad. I am expecting my first grandson mid February and am so excited. I have lots of decluttering to do between now and then...
Happy New Year! I’m glad you’re talking about and advocating mindfulness regarding consumerism and a minimalist mindset. I’m slowly but surely doing this in my own life now.... Less Stuff = More Life!
EXCELLENT video! As always great ideas.. I have to clean more as I go. My mom had so many great sayings.. one was “ lower your expectations and your performance will rise “
I would love the weekly/monthly cleaning schedule videos. I am not in the same physical shape anymore and just listening to you in this video I've realized I need to adjust my expectations. I find myself being overwhelmed since I can't do ALL the things anymore, so I feel like the schedule videos will help me with a new & fresh cleaning perspective. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I would love to see a weekly cleaning routine video! Also, do you have a routine for deeper cleaning in your own house? Are there things you do monthly or yearly, or do you do those kinds of tasks sporadically as you think of them? My house is probably an 8 on its best day, 5 on its worst day. My goal is to generally be “10 minutes from company-ready,” when I’m keeping up with weekly cleaning and daily tidy-up!
I would love to see a how you do a weekly cleaning routine. I work from home with 3 rambunctious boys... your input as a mom and being an entrepreneur is very impressive and a wonderful platform that you have!
Yes definitely would love to see a weekly cleaning routine video!!! My house on any day would be a 5 plenty to be cleaned and decluttered but with six kids sometimes it gets away from me.
We rearranged the living room and my husband created a seat for me by the large library shelf, so OF COURSE I had to redo the library. A large diaper box full of books for the used book store! Woot!
You have helped me declutter and clean so much. I like watching your videos whilst I’m doing it. It’s a pleasure when you have to go in a draw or a wardrobe and it’s tidy and not stuffed! I
WISH: I would love much more on the topic about emotional clutter and cluttering your fantasy self. Also (tied to the emotional clutter) things, clothes, art work etc. that belong to my kids. PLEASE...🙏🏻
I am 10. Maybe sounds arrogant, but cleaning for me is therapeutical and it helps that I am organised, so 99% of the times my house is a full 10. My home is an extension of me, represents me, my values, my desires. I don't do it for people, it just feels good to me :)
I absolutely love these rules. I love the hands full one especially. I always do that when I leave my car! As soon as the keys come out of the ignition, I look around for trash, clothes, cups, etc. any thing I can take inside the house and put where it needs to go! It keeps my car so clutter free!
I find small messes can migrate - a small mess on the counter sticks to the bottom of a glass or bowel, then gets transferred to a new surface when the item is moved. So I'm constantly wiping down my kitchen counter when working in there. Yes on the weekly cleaning schedule video. Thank you for all you share on here! I would rate my house about a 6.
My home is around a 3 due to my own health and trying to find a way to make things better for my family of two plus pets. Happy New Year to Melissa and Chad..

I try to keep at least the living room tidy. It's the room we spend most of our time in as a family, and the room visitors see. I keep only couches and tv in there. Nothing to collect dust or clutter. It's nice to have one clean room when the rest is too much for me to clean. Also, ask for help. Don't be embarrassed. Hey, Melissa! I’m new to your channel, but I’m so happy I found you guys! Yes to the weekly routine video. I actually had made a giant checklist of all cleaning tasks as well as Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Deep Cleaning routines right before I found your channel. I’d love to see how they line up. Also, I’ve got a couple requests. Do you have anything on how to clean a toilet tank (not the bowl, but inside the tank in the back)? And, do you have any tips on tight spaces like between the outside of the toilet tank and the wall (it’s too tight for my fingers). Also also, do you have anything for air vents? I was wondering if you could wash the vent covers with all-purpose cleaner or a solution similar to the stove vent and then possibly vacuum a bit into the vent itself. Just curious, especially since we have a dog. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills! PS: It’s kinda weird, but I got super excited when I went shopping today and made several of your DIY recipes. As an extra bonus, while decluttering over the past couple weeks, I found a bottle of tea tree oil I didn’t know we had. Now, my house will be clean AND smell great! Seriously, how did you make cleaning so fun?!

I always watch your videos before starts cleaning to motivate , you’re amazing Melissa in every video I watch I learn at least 1 new technique thank you for that
This is really helpful. I've started to ensure that I always have something in my hands whenever I'm moving from room to room; seems like an insignificant thing, but holy crap it makes a huge difference in the long run. It's second nature to very quickly take a second or two to scan the room and pick out at least one thing that I know I can put away properly. I'm also really particular about cleaning while I cook...it's part of the whole experience for me, it's really satisfying to know I have a minute to wash a pan while something cooks and leave everything tidier than when I started.
I would say my house is about a 6 at any given time. I'm a mom of 4 boys ages 10,8,7,1 so I have come to terms that my house will be dirty but I still try to keep it clean as possible
I love you Melissa! You’re my Great British Bakeoff. You’re my relaxing, affirming, inspiring watch, every time. Thanks for being so authentic. My house... is a 5.. and needs some serious remodeling and repainting. But until then, keeping at it!
Yes me too as well as 3 daughters and between 12 to 20 young people once and sometimes twice a week. I prefer that the kids feel welcome and happy rather than feel in awe at my tidy house. In the grand scheme of things its more important that they are happy and have happy memories.
I'm such a procrastinator that I didn't even start my new years resolution (quitting smoking) until February 4th! But I finally quit and life has gotten better. I'm feeling healthier and more motivated to clean my clutter. Taking baby steps but I will get there!

I have a question: So say someone uses hairspray... on their hair. After spraying daily, excess build up starts to form on a wall. Any suggestions on how to clean hairspray off wall without Mark's or smudges??
Hairstylist here 🙋♀️ most hairspray are water soluble. I just use dish soap and warm water on a microfiber cloth and it will come right off after a few pass overs.
I use an enzyme type cleaner. Spray or wipe in on the hair spray, wait a couple of minutes and it comes off. I use an plder brand called Quick n Brite. It works great. www.amazon.com/Quick-Brite-00032-Purpose-Cleaning/dp/B001F893OA?th=1

Gotta be ruthless! I was helping my friend clean and I got a big black bag and started throwing away all of his old toys and random art projects from when he was like 10
My issue with ‘being ruthless’ with items in my home is how do I dispose of certain things? An old lamp, an old duvet, pillows I’m not using, old dirty rugs???? I don’t want to add to the mountain of waste.
Hi, you can search online for ways to recycle/donate in your area. And old lamp can be recycle like electronic, animak shelters love old duvet and pillows (wash them first or ask the shelter how they prefer). Maybe some items will be more difficult, but its important to not produce waste. Hope its helps :)
I think about this too. I recycle, donate etc where I can but have to accept that some stuff will go into land fill with an apology to our planet and a resolve to do better. I try to buy and use less plastic and general stuff, less stuff means less use of energy and product to clean....motto for the year is 'quality over quantity in all things'. I think that initially you will have to add some things to the waste mountain but like me, resolve to improve. Rose x
Marian I do understand you are talking about used up items not 'stuff' per se but as extra food for thought, I was also interested in the concept of 'unbuying'. That is intentionally getting rid of things with more effort than just donating to a charity shop/thrift store. Unless it's some really nice things then stuffing your stuff in a bag and giving to the thrift shop doesn't really teach you anything about not buying stuff in the first place it just moves the 'problem' onto someone else. I heard about this on 'a small wardrobe' channel. It has certainly made me think. I wonder what proportion of donations will untimely end up in land fill anyway. If you put stuff in yourself you feel the pain. It's quite a dilemma isn't it? Best wishes Rose (UK)
Yes to the weekly cleaning routine. My house is 6 with a two year old the fact that I can clear my counterspace and kitchen islandeach might I a miracle.
That’s hard being ruthless I can’t throw things my beautiful mum gives me shes 91 she’s my mum bless her ❤️❤️ I lucky she does that others have no mum 😮 or great relationship I feel really blessed
Just schedule in a little bit of time to start - say, 15 or 30 minutes. Start with a pile of papers or a small corner of one room and just focus on that, nothing else. Before you know it, you'll start seeing the difference that the work is making and it'll get easier(ish) from there to tackle other areas - Good luck Erica! :)
Start with small tasks. Clean your coffee table or nightstand....do a ‘quick clean’, (where you run thru & tidy.) Things as simple as cleaning off a table (& making certain NOT to let clutter refill those spots. Tell your family if you need to that the table, or counter, etc. is no longer a dumping ground.) Put a couple of ‘nice’ things on those tables- counters, desk, mantle. It’s pretty cool, as you begin to work thru the house & all of a sudden these clean spots appear & once you ‘train’ yourself & family that nothing but ‘xyzzy’ belongs there- you will stop using these surfaces as catch all’s. (Just make sure to provide alternative spots for these things.) A ‘Coming & Going’ table/shelf by the entryway works great. Create a place for your keys, wallet, sunglasses, purse- one for each member is good. Kids backpacks, jackets & library books now have a home & are a reminder to take them with you. Put a basket for each family member & throughout the day- pop each person’s items into them & give an appropriate time limit (a day or two) to take it to their rooms & bring the basket back & when they don’t (you put the items on ‘time out’- a day, a week, etc. without their items & either they will care enough to put it away- or its unnecessary....toss it.) (Especially if you have stairs- get matching baskets at the top & bottom (maybe with a name tag for the owner) & as it gathers up or downstairs- you take it with you.) FlyLady has AWESOME tips & routines for starting where u are. I’m a lifelong ‘messy’ & honestly, her routines have changed my life. A few major ‘easy’ ways to start are... Make your bed first thing when u get out of it- it took me until my mid 30’s to get this down...and IT HAS BEEN A LIFE CHANGER! (I even spread up my bed on mornings I plan on getting back in to relax & have tea. Oftentimes, I change my mind/plans & bam 💥- my bed is already made.) Another tip is to clean as you go. If you make something to eat- put it all away BEFORE eating (I promise it makes it so much easier before you’re full & lazy feeling.) As you get ready, or even just use the bathroom- keep Lysol wipes handy & AFTER you put away & tidy your stuff that you used- give the counter, sink & toilet with the wipes. (Obviously different ones- lol). It is SOOO much easier to clean a little consistently- than to let it build up & have to scrub stuff. (Same goes if you have a shower door. Buy a squeegee & either use vinegar & water or a shower cleanser & wipe it down after each shower. (Even if the kids & Husband don’t do it- you’re still getting to it several times a week more than if not. It really cuts down on the full shower cleanse.) The biggest lesson I’ve learned from FlyLady- is to start were you are. Develop the routines & then slowly work thru what you can. She does daily reminders, challenges & has House ‘zones’ to work in each week. (So even though you may be decluttering or deep cleaning- eventually everything is gotten to. Without the pressure of doing it all at once.) Baby steps. 😊 Good luck 👍
Thank you for all your tips. It really makes a difference when you have a plan and stay on top of it! Please do a weekly cleaning schedule for us. Growing up my mom would tell us... in Spanish "limpiar sobre lo limpio" or "clean over clean" She never did a "whole day or spent any hours cleaning". Meaning she never waited for things to get dirty or unorganized. She was too busy to let the house work get out of hand so instead she did a little every day and enlisted everyone in the home... Our house was always clean and tidy. People would come over and say how did you know we were coming? She didn't know. She didn't have to stressed over the house work.

I have been decluttering my home for the last 18 months. Your channel has helped me with this journey. I have also been on a low buy for the last 9 months. It feels so freeing to not over spend and have a more peaceful home. Thank you!
This is my resolution for this year!
Would love to see you do a print out on a Schedule cleaning
husband has put me on a spending/buying freeze. and I am glad. I need to be more mindful and less cluttery. Thanks Melissa. Best Wishes for all good things in 2020 for you Riley and Chad. I am expecting my first grandson mid February and am so excited. I have lots of decluttering to do between now and then...
Congratulations - such an exciting time :)
I have been watching you now for few years. I love all of your great cleaning tips and how environmentally friendly they are. Love from the UK ❤️
Thanks very much Amy! ❤️
I would love to see your weekly cleaning schedule! And a deep cleaning schedule too!
YES, YES, YES!!!! I would love to see your weekly cleaning routine 😁
Yes Yes Yes Weekly daily monthly routine video!!!!!
Hi! "Clean as you go" is my number one rule! Teamwork! Yes to weekly cleaning. Happy 2020! 😁
I would love to see a how you do a weekly cleaning routine. I work from home with 3 rambunctious boys... your input as a mom and being an entrepreneur is very impressive and a wonderful platform that you have!
Yes to weekly cleaning!! And I’m gonna say 4-5. Others say my home is clean but I’m so particular!
Yes definitely would love to see a weekly cleaning routine video!!! My house on any day would be a 5 plenty to be cleaned and decluttered but with six kids sometimes it gets away from me.
Yes! Please make a weekly cleaning routine video.
Yes please a weekly cleaning video with a schedule would be marvelous
Yes! Cleaning schedule. I don’t know where to start. I’m sort of a hoarder and I’m trying to fix it. I passed slob awhile back
Start with a small area. Clear it and vow never to leave stuff there again.
Whow
Flylady.net has a great system with cleaning and decluttering routines.
I have been doing "layering" and didn't even realize it. Works great!! Happy New Year!!!
PLEASE...🙏🏻
I just love that idea of always taking something out of a room with you!
Yes, a weekly cleaning video would be amazing!!!
I am 10. Maybe sounds arrogant, but cleaning for me is therapeutical and it helps that I am organised, so 99% of the times my house is a full 10. My home is an extension of me, represents me, my values, my desires. I don't do it for people, it just feels good to me :)
I would love to see a video on a “weekly cleaning schedule”
I absolutely love these rules. I love the hands full one especially. I always do that when I leave my car! As soon as the keys come out of the ignition, I look around for trash, clothes, cups, etc. any thing I can take inside the house and put where it needs to go! It keeps my car so clutter free!
Yes on the weekly cleaning routine,
I find small messes can migrate - a small mess on the counter sticks to the bottom of a glass or bowel, then gets transferred to a new surface when the item is moved. So I'm constantly wiping down my kitchen counter when working in there.
Yes on the weekly cleaning schedule video. Thank you for all you share on here!
I would rate my house about a 6.
CMS POLL: On a scale from 1-10 - what would you rate your home?
negative 10 lol
4🌝
4-5 but I am trying to improve that. Ok now that I think about that, it may be somewhere between 3 and 5.
6-7
5-6 papers are my nemesis. Can you do a paper organization/declutter video
Yes! I’d love to see your weekly cleaning routine
Do you have a vid on cleaning the refrigerator
I keep going back to this one and learn something new every time.

My home is around a 3 due to my own health and trying to find a way to make things better for my family of two plus pets. Happy New Year to Melissa and Chad..
Same here. I have a severe chronic pain illness that makes it impossible and I have a son and am a single mother so. My plate is already full😭
@@youmakemehappy7 My prayers go out to you dear. The three score I gave was at its best.. right now I'm afraid to let anyone in.. Embarasses me something awful.
There is always one person you can count on that won't judge you. Someone from church (if you attend) or someplace you come into contact with people ❤
@@christinaruiz4183 Thank you for this reply, it has helped me... I try to keep area's for cooking and restroom fairly clean for obvious reasons. I would just love to get some cleaning tips that help when you are disabled to help us all try to stay on top of it instead of in my case doing the basics of what has to stay clean.
@@amychilders5170 In my case, I sit in a chair in front of what I'm cleaning. It's hard for me to stand for long periods. I have rolling laundry hampers, so I don't have to carry them.
I have been watching cleaning videos for many years now....had have no motivation to organize/maintain order in my house till I found your channel.i like your attitude and your approach.just wanted to say thanks!!
I'd love a weekly cleaning video! I'm disabled and only do what I can, fortunately my husband does help but it's frustrating for me. You could maybe do a video on cleaning when you're less able bodied as well. Clean wise about a 7 tidy wise a 4! xx
Kirsty Macfarlane I have a disabilty & live alone aswell. My mam does things that I can't do when she's free. Allthough I like to do most of it myself if I can
@@kerryirving2949 are you from Scotland? It's very frustrating I know. My day used to be, get up and walk our 3 German shepherds, do whatever housework needed doing, have a bath or shower and then go to my work. We've only got one German shepherd and how I exercise her is through training and games in the house and garden, you know the housework situation and I'm not fit to work! Frustrated is an understatement, to go from being so active to only going out twice a week for about 3 hours is a big adjustment and all before I was 40! I've had spinal problems since my late teens but nothing was ever done until it was too late. That's my story and I totally sympathise with you xx
Kirsty Macfarlane im from the uk. I've had my disability since I was born
@@kerryirving2949 I'm from Ayrshire, it was when you said your mam that I thought you were Scottish. It's tough having a disability, especially when you're young, I feel that people don't make allowances. I walk with a stick and elderly people will still push in front of me to get on the bus even though I'm bent over leaning on it in pain! It's good that you have your mum's support. No, my disability was down to genetics, there's joint and spinal conditions through my family history. Though nobody has had what I've got and there's nothing anyone can do so I just get on with it as best I can xx
Kirsty Macfarlane I cant belive old people push infront of you!! That's awful & disrespectful!
I always watch your videos before starts cleaning to motivate , you’re amazing Melissa in every video I watch I learn at least 1 new technique thank you for that
I would love for you to do a weekly cleaning routine. My house would rate a 5.
Weekly cleaning videos would be awesome
I'd love to see your weekly cleaning 😀

I'd rate my home a 5 because I have 2 fluffy cats who shed constantly
Yes me too as well as 3 daughters and between 12 to 20 young people once and sometimes twice a week. I prefer that the kids feel welcome and happy rather than feel in awe at my tidy house. In the grand scheme of things its more important that they are happy and have happy memories.
OMG I need a cleaning video on how to manage cat hair 😂😂😂
I have 7 rescued cats...their litter dust, and shedded fur, are two of my challenges. Are there any other Cat Moms out there, with advice?
@@dianeellis-mcroberts9376 I vacuum everyday and clean wipe around the litter 🙂
I'm such a procrastinator that I didn't even start my new years resolution (quitting smoking) until February 4th! But I finally quit and life has gotten better. I'm feeling healthier and more motivated to clean my clutter. Taking baby steps but I will get there!
Still, THE NICEST HAIR, Melissa
Love your stuff. Just bought a Dyson today
Yes, would love and appreciate a weekly cleaning video and an organization video for example how to store kitchen tools, pots pans, colanders. Happy New Year!
I have a question:
So say someone uses hairspray... on their hair. After spraying daily, excess build up starts to form on a wall. Any suggestions on how to clean hairspray off wall without Mark's or smudges??
Good question! 👍
And hairspray build-up on the tile floor, too.
Hairstylist here 🙋♀️ most hairspray are water soluble. I just use dish soap and warm water on a microfiber cloth and it will come right off after a few pass overs.
It also builds up in your lungs! Bad stuff!
I use an enzyme type cleaner. Spray or wipe in on the hair spray, wait a couple of minutes and it comes off. I use an plder brand called Quick n Brite. It works great. www.amazon.com/Quick-Brite-00032-Purpose-Cleaning/dp/B001F893OA?th=1
Fantastic rules and ideas, I'm going to carry some of them out, my house is a 6/7 but I live alone, was very different when my son was here.

Yes please Melissa! Would love to see a weekly cleaning routine video, or even one where you give a basic outline for creating a cleaning schedule. I've seen other ones online, but honestly your opinion is the one I need most. :)

I'm 79 years old and love your show, I had a lot to learn. Mary
Gotta be ruthless! I was helping my friend clean and I got a big black bag and started throwing away all of his old toys and random art projects from when he was like 10
Thanks for the great tips. You get more beautiful with every video, Melissa. Have a great year!
Whatever color makeup, lipstick, eye makeup you used in this video it is GORGEOUS!! It suits you perfectly!!!
I have random electronics and stuff lying about sometimes water bottles etc. I'd say 8/10
You are So fun to watch and SO inspiring!! Thank you !!
How do we start if it’s out of control but we want to start the routines and scheduled cleaning?
Just schedule in a little bit of time to start - say, 15 or 30 minutes. Start with a pile of papers or a small corner of one room and just focus on that, nothing else. Before you know it, you'll start seeing the difference that the work is making and it'll get easier(ish) from there to tackle other areas - Good luck Erica! :)
Start with small tasks. Clean your coffee table or nightstand....do a ‘quick clean’, (where you run thru & tidy.)
Things as simple as cleaning off a table (& making certain NOT to let clutter refill those spots. Tell your family if you need to that the table, or counter, etc. is no longer a dumping ground.)
Put a couple of ‘nice’ things on those tables- counters, desk, mantle. It’s pretty cool, as you begin to work thru the house & all of a sudden these clean spots appear & once you ‘train’ yourself & family that nothing but ‘xyzzy’ belongs there- you will stop using these surfaces as catch all’s. (Just make sure to provide alternative spots for these things.)
A ‘Coming & Going’ table/shelf by the entryway works great. Create a place for your keys, wallet, sunglasses, purse- one for each member is good. Kids backpacks, jackets & library books now have a home & are a reminder to take them with you.
Put a basket for each family member & throughout the day- pop each person’s items into them & give an appropriate time limit (a day or two) to take it to their rooms & bring the basket back & when they don’t (you put the items on ‘time out’- a day, a week, etc. without their items & either they will care enough to put it away- or its unnecessary....toss it.)
(Especially if you have stairs- get matching baskets at the top & bottom (maybe with a name tag for the owner) & as it gathers up or downstairs- you take it with you.)
FlyLady has AWESOME tips & routines for starting where u are.
Oftentimes, I change my mind/plans & bam 💥- my bed is already made.)
Another tip is to clean as you go. If you make something to eat- put it all away BEFORE eating (I promise it makes it so much easier before you’re full & lazy feeling.)
As you get ready, or even just use the bathroom- keep Lysol wipes handy & AFTER you put away & tidy your stuff that you used- give the counter, sink & toilet with the wipes.
It really cuts down on the full shower cleanse.)
The biggest lesson I’ve learned from FlyLady- is to start were you are. Develop the routines & then slowly work thru what you can.
She does daily reminders, challenges & has House ‘zones’ to work in each week. (So even though you may be decluttering or deep cleaning- eventually everything is gotten to. Without the pressure of doing it all at once.)
Baby steps. 😊
Good luck 👍
