In this lively presentation Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon.com discusses many of the technological advances that have enabled Amazon.com to be the "earth's most customer centric company". Bezos talks about Amazon's first 30 days of operation, shows the very first home page and explains how the existence of a little known book warehouse in Roseburg Oregon led to the decision to locate Amazon in Seattle. Since 1997, Amazon has spent $800 million on technology, more than it has spent on either warehousing or marketing. A self-proclaimed "EECS-geek", Bezos tells of technological advances that have not only enabled customers to find products, (and now at 28 million items), enabled products to find customers. Hear how Amazon developed "real time personalization", how the company performs "active experiments" and learn more about salad spinners than you could ever imagine. Also appearing is MIT alum Robert Frederick, Manager of Amazon Net Services. Frederick explains how these services enable other retail services to interact with Amazon. Hear how the company that "runs on computer science" plans for more technological advances in the future.

11:55 *Customer centricity: 1) Listen, 2) Invent, 3 Personalize.* You can't run a business of any kind if you're not going to listen to your customers - that's fundamental. But invention is equally important. Invention goes far beyond listening to customers, because oftentimes customers don't really know what it is that they want. It's your job to invent on their behalf.

Jobs, Bezos and Page are my three heroes. There is something common to all three and I don’t mean being tremendously successful. All three were _obsessed_ with customer experience. They put customers on a pedestal and did everything they could to make sure they had the best possible user experience - whether it was the experience of using digital devices, looking for information or researching and shopping for products. Nothing beats the quality of goods and services from their companies. And naturally their customers rewarded them by making them the most successful in their areas. It’s amazing how many businesses don’t get the simple concept of making your customers happy.

55:44 Key takeaway: Always while innovation try to keep costs of experimenting low so that you can experiment more. This is among the core principles which amazon cracked early on and went on innovating so rapidly and in case they failed as in case of Fire phones, the cost was low relative to the cash they were already generating, they didn't hesitate a minute about shutting the operation completely.

Thank you so much MIT for uploading this precious video! As I consider Bezos as one of the best entrepreneur and fabulous person in the world, I learn so much in terms of business and technology from this lecture.
Bezos' view on the approach (to reduce the cost of doing experiments and at the same time have an objective standards for what better than what) to continuous innovation is especially enlightening. This is very similar to The Lean Startup approach proposed by Steve Blank, but just for a startup lacking of resource. The underlying philosophies are the same: a framework fo low cost testing and being fact-based/data-driven.
I find his advice on career very true as well: "Whenever you try to catch a wave, you're almost always too late. ... You basically have to wait in place and let it come to you. So just find something that you're passionate about." This resonate very much with Peter Thiel's opinion on "following a theme VS. doing one of a kind business.". When you look at a trend you find all undifferentiated companies doing all the same things and profit gets competed away.

Amazon does everything physical retailers such as product suggestions (he uses "personalization algorithm" for giving suggestion) , breaking bulks and store inventory in a warehouse (fulfillment centers) except he does everything online. His business still needs lot of real estates spaces for fulfillment centers but they are actually cheaper than other prime retail locations. So his business doesn't benefit from moorse law like the way he mention here. It probably benefited the back end operation for data centers. Because Amazon is not constrained by needing shelfspace to display their SKUs, they can have a huge selection with minimal cost. They also got tax benefit for incorporating a specific city which did not collect sales tax. So they were able to provide huge selection and low prices which usually is a trade-off for tradition retailers. For physical retailer, to provide huge selection require large shelfspace which increases cost. Also they negotiated fiercely with their suppliers with a lot of leverage tactics such as taking them off from the top spot of the search result etc. What is revolutionary about what they did was actually logistics in the warehouse including picking and sorting efficiently and ship them out to customers' doorstep in two days. Their head of logistics was hired away from Walmart. He actually admired and learned a lot from Walmart. Not trying to say what he accomplished wasnt a big deal. Probability of a company becoming a trillion dollar company is extremely low. There are a lot to learn from him.
