      These words are: bro-brother, fam-family, ad-advertisment, peeps-people, intro-introduction, congrats-congratulations, uni-university, veggie-vegetarian, admin-administration, celeb-cebrity, totes-totally, fab-fabulous, info-information, carbs-carbohydrates, sec-second, doc-doctor, prep-preparation, pic-picture, awks-awkward, probs-probably, abs-abdominal muscles.
      There are 21 words, not 20:)
      In addition there can be pros and cons.

    These words could do with a "slangometer" (0-10 scale of how slangy they are). Carbs and admin would only rate a 1, uni about 2-3, fab maybe a 5-6, but totes, awks and fam would all be around a 9.

    I'm obsessed with your channel, Tom! I mean, totally in love with your videos and explanations. I've been learning American English for more than 10 years and I had serious trouble to understand British accent. I just can say, your channel is helping me to improve and listen to anything more clearly! Thank you sooo much for helping people like me!

    Tom, I'm Brazilian and I'm fascinated about the English/British way of speaking. I must confess you I've been learnt a lot watching your videos and first of all I would like to shout it out to you for helping me thriving my English, even you not knowing that. I'd like to learn more British slangs and the most appropriate way to pronounce the words in British accent but, of course, being aware of American, Australian, South African, etc. accents so I can go everywhere and understand almost everything preserving my British accent. I don't have English classes here so I always studied by myself. Therefore, excuse me for my mistakes in writing, I know my English is far away from being really fluent and sometimes it's terrible! But anyway, thanks so much for helping peeps like me to develop our English comprehensions. A big hug on you!

    We (canadians. dnno about americans) call vegetables "veggies" so the phrase "I'm a veggie" has a totally different meaning to me xD

      Same here, east-midwesterner.
      "I'm a veggie" kinda sounds like a non-scary halloween costume. "Veggie food" makes sense to me as in great food from Vegetables , thou I wouldn't expect it to be vegetarian.
      Kinda how you but beacon in green beans, that's still "Veggie Food" in my books.

    totally enjoying your videos. I am a native English speaker from NW USA and travel frequently in England. Here we use "U" for university. For most it is speaking of "THE U" as our local university, but sometimes used generically such as I went to UCONN ( university of Connecticut) .

    Although it doesn't really rank as an abbreviation, I think "cba" is worth knowing too since it's an acronym one comes across almost on a daily basis in the UK (albeit highly colloquial).
    I used it in the US and the person I was talking to seemed very puzzled by it haha.
    "Do you wanna go out tonight?" "Nah, cba (can't be arsed). I'll just stay at home."
    PS: I love "convo" (conversation) as a word too. I use it all the time.

    But I keep wondering if some of these short forms are not culturally specific to certain places i.e. exclusive to Britain or the US for example. I'm sure Australia and South Africa might have forms some Brits have never heard...

    I'm really enjoying your videos. So much fun to watch. And also to see the difference between American English and British English. By the way Americans don't say Uni for University. In fact they would stare at you blankly if you said you were going to go see your Uni friends. Haha. Also we don't use Veggie to describe a vegetarian person. Only for vegetarian foods. Oh and I've never heard deffo. We certainly don't say that in California. Haha. BTW, you are totes adorbs!

    Differences from American English, or rather, my English vernacular XD (I can't speak for everyone):
    1) I pronounce "advertisement" differently! instead of
    2) I use "veggie" as a shortened form of "vegetable"
    3) I use "admin" as short for "administrator"
    4) I've never heard "life admin"
    5) I hear "totes" sometimes, but I've never heard or seen "deffo"
    the rest I hear fairly regularly ^_^
    6) I almost always hear "abs" and not "abdominals"; the latter sounds like a word the doctor would use

    • @teresaf.rodrigues8558
      @teresaf.rodrigues8558 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Patella i also say advertisement like you do, it’s probably an American influence. And you might be a tech guy if you think of admin as administrator and not administration 😋

    • @iamliamsingleton
      @iamliamsingleton 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deffo is very common in the UK. I've never heard it in the US though, so I guess it's not something you guys say. :)

    I have a true fondness for my antipodean cousins. I think no nations shorten words more than the Aussies and Kiwis. Kiwis speak is particularly delightful. They're such nice people, it's like some of the best of British were deported or emigrated to Australia, and then some of the best Australians, supplemented by continued British emigrants, moved to New Zealand. Obviously this is not a fact, but I find Australian and New Zealand English speak wonderful to listen to. The language originated here in England, but we, in our small island speak so many variants of it, that I think that it's repulsively ignorant of us to try and claim superiority of people use the language that we introduced to them.
    My one exception, is how Americans say 'herbs' :-)
