THEY'RE MANY WAYS TO SAY THANK U.. Thank you for all your hard work on this.. Thanks again, we couldn’t have pulled this off without you Thank you, you’re amazing! I’m so thankful for everything you bring to the table Thank you kindly Thanks a million Many thanks Warmest thanks I truly appreciate your hard work I truly appreciate you Please accept my deepest thanks I can’t thank you enough Eternally grateful Beyond grateful Grateful for your support I appreciate your thoughtfulness, you’ve made my day! Thank you for going above and beyond! Thanks for being in my corner So glad you’re on my team
Much obliged. Thank You,for driving the attention over such ,'minor' issues,of utmost importance to me! I was to England almost two decades ago, staying at a modest hotel,With my modest knowledge of the language, standing in line for my key to the room,a French group more recently arrived , ' were ' ordering 'their' keys to the reservation, without beginning their phrases with either silvous..., forgive- my French,or please, thank you! The receptionist politely, with an enormous patience, served us all,in front of them, behind them, simply because we said please, thank you...
That’s amazing, thanks a lot. For me, a Portuguese speaker, the last one is the most intriguing because our normal way to say “thanks” is “muito obrigado(a)” which translates into “much obliged”.
Hi Tom! You're a star for teaching so many useful Brit English words and expessions! You know, the old English way to say thanks, "much obliged" is exactly how Thank someone un Portuguese: "muito obrigado".
Rally enjoyed the 10th way... "much obliged"... Looks like the brasilian portuguese way to say "thank you" formal or informal, we say "muito obrigada", that literally means that we feel obligated to give back a favor. O jad no idea we had a similar expression for this... really liked that!!!
You are a legend!!I'm learning both British English and American English, but now I think the British English sounds very clear, you speak very good buddy.
Thanks for your videos from Argentina. You're a really good teacher, so clear and easy to understand. I usually send your videos to my students. And then we discuss the content. We love them! Again: Many many many thanks!!!
+Emilia Ferreyra thanks so much for sharing my videos with your students. That's lovely to hear. I am a huge fan of Argentina as I spent a year teaching in BA.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate all these good tips ! in french, you can say "il ne fallait pas" whitch means something like "you shouldn't have". I didn't know that this expression was used in english. Thanks a lot !! your channel is so helpful
Hello neighbors, we have that one too, because in german you would say: »Das wäre doch nicht nötig gewesen« which has pretty much the same meaning as its english and french equivalent and literally translates into »it wouldn't have been necessary«.
Tom, you're an incredible teacher! I really like the fact that you introduce to us vocabulary of different language registers. I'd like to encourage you to keep on mentioning advanced/more polite expressions on each topic. IMO, it is much easier to catch the standard or colloquial ones since they can be easily found around us. However, advanced English is oftentimes disregarded yet very useful. Thanks a lot!
Thanks so much for this video Tom. I've been living in London for 3 years now, I'm familiarised with all the ways you pointed out of how to say thank you, but the examples you use to illustrate each one of them are really top notch. By the way, much obliged, or simply obliged, is the common way to say thank you in portuguese, obliged=obrigado. Cheers mate!
Obrigado! I’m an American living in Portugal and I’m doing the opposite of you, speaking fluent English and learning Portuguese. And I suspected that Obrigado was somehow related to “obligation” so thank you for clarifying that. Lastly, in terms of these expressions, across the pond in the USA we pretty much say all of them except for “cheers.“ That word is primarily associated with a very popular television show of about 20 years ago lol because it took place in a bar, and you would still (maybe) say cheers in giving a toast. we also don’t use “you’re a star“ to say thank you, but a more recent fashion when you want to Say an emphatic thank you, you might say “thank you sooooooooo much!“
You do a very nice job with these lessons. As an American, I find it interesting, though, that here "much obliged" is almost always used in a very informal way. When someone does you a favor, you might say, "Hey, much obliged man. I owe you one." Also "I owe you one" is probably the most common American informal expression of thanks.
I am a big fan of your channel. You provide a fresh approach to what is going on in British English. One little bit missing though, in today's video. For foreign learners, there might be a confusion between "cheers" and cheese" in British English. In other examples you included the phonetic transcription. Here it would be useful. While cheese has a long vowel, in cheers we have a diphthong ending in a schwa sound. Of course I am talking about standard English (RP). In other varieties of non-rhotic British English they might be homophones. In rhotic varieties of course there wouldn't be a problem, as the /r/ would help to discriminate. Otherwise, thumbs up! Again, as a fellow teacher, thank you so much for the work you do. You are an inspiration.
Ohhh the first time a friend told "you shouldn't have", I thought he was saying that actually I shouldn't give him a gift and I felt offended. Now I understand what he meant, thank you so much for helping us.
Super useful lesson. We were in London and Gloucestershire and we were able to get all your hints. My wife bought a punnet of strawberry at a farmer's market and the guy, who was crying out loud his offers, said to her "Cheers Darling!!!" Moreover my daughter couldn't stop laughing at "Thanks A MILLION". Nice One!!!
Hi, Tom, I really appreciate your lessons, your videos catch my attention and your enthusiasm to teach us your language is amazing !! Thanks a lot again !!
First time comment here! It's so interesting, I've learned British English for a year, and I'm trying to find out the other way to know more about this, so your channel give me a new sight👀 Thanks so much!
“Much obliged“ is kind of like saying “I owe you one,“ as saying thank you. It’s a Thanks with an implication that you’re now someone indebted to that person

Hi Tom, thanks for the hard work on making the video. May I ask if it is appropriate to say "thank you" in an informal way to a complete stranger, even in a very casual situation for a massive help? Please advise. Many Thanks😁

I heard the word Ta! in a new Zealand TV show. I understood the meaning from the context but didn't understand the word itself. After I thought it was just a short pronounciation for TY! that is Thank You in short message or just a local way to say thank you like a slang. Good to learn that the word Ta! really exists, so.... Thank you! :-)
As a kid, I used to hate the word "Ta" until I learnt English got it from the Vikings. That made it seem cooler to me. However, I would only ever say "ta" for a minor thank you, like if someone handed me some food from the other end of the dinner table; I wouldn't say it to say thanks for a huge favour or amazing gift.
