Tip:
Place your dough in the oven with the light on, to have to dough rise. (DO NOT TURN YOUR OVEN ON) while the dough is rising.
Ingredientes;
1 xícara de leite
1 1/3 xícaras de açúcar granulado
2 colheres de sopa de gordura vegetal
1/3 xícara de manteiga sem sal
1/2 colher de chá de sal
Raspas de 1 limão
*Reserve a mistura de leite e manteiga ate ficar morna
3 ovos
4 1/2 xícaras de farinha de trigo
Fermento
1 colher de chá de farinha de trigo
1 colher de sopa de açúcar granulado
1 1/2 colheres de sopa de fermento seco ativo
1/3 xícara de água
2 colheres de sopa de óleo vegetal
1 colher de chá de gordura vegetal para untar a panela
Eu usei uma panela de 10 inches(4 inches de profundidade)
Levar o forna a 305F por 1 hora

Omg.. if I didn’t see this video .. I would have thought I made a mistake while mixing the ingredients! It looked too liquidity. But u assured me that it was ok… and keep going!! I never made sweet bread because it looked to difficult, but aside it taking some time.. the process wasn’t too scary 🤔😋. I’m seriously thinking of trying to make this recipe!! In Hawaii we have a lot of Portuguese families they came in the early 1900s to work in the sugar cane fields, along with the Japanese, Korean, Filipinos . We always had bakeries that had Portuguese donuts and breads. The ones that I loved and remembered the most were home-made ones given to me by friends of Portuguese descent! Their grandmas would always make🥰🥰🥰

I love having it with tea but what l don’t like is that we have to reduce the quantity due to our waistlines😘l will double it up in order to make one for me and one for my mom. She is 92 and can no longer cook. I want to surprise her on Easter and see her reaction. I am sure she will be real happy. I find it’s important to carry on the family tradition. Made it for the second time love the recipe, Nancy! it's staying with the family for life! Love the tip to help it rise with the oven light on! Unfortunately mine doesnt work anymore so I just turn the oven on for 30 seconds before putting it in to make it nice and cozy for the yeast 😂!

Hi Helen. It raises the temperature and helps the dough rise and it makes the dough for the Massa Sovada fluffy. I asked my mother the same question when I learned how to make Massa Sovada. In Portuguese it's called massa escaldada. Thank you🥰
I also add a tsp of vanilla to the milk mixture once it has cooled down.

I would like thank you for the hard work you put into your videos, I used to bake with my mom growing up, of course nothing was measured back in the old days, you have filled in the missing steps I’ve been looking for. Thank you.. I appreciate it. I have a recipe on my channel for 3 bolos de massa sovada. As this is a fairly large bolo de massa, you can easily split it in 2 smaller pieces of dough and place in 2 - 5 inch pans. Let it rise in the pan for the 2nd rise. You may need less time in the oven (45-50 minutes) if you make it in smaller pans. Hope this helps.😊

I'm in Fall River so at least a dozen bakeries make this bread. I still want to make it but I have a question. My favorite part of this bread is the side crust where it touches the pan. When done right, I can peel it off like an outer layer. is there something special I should do to make sure that happens? Thank you!

Hi, it can be a few reasons. This is a fluffy airy sweet bread. It can be the measurement of the flour was not exact, or not enough liquid, need more rising time, these are just a few reasons. Practice makes perfect. Don't be discouraged. The flour cups should be 250ml each. Thank you 🥰

A couple of questions.
1. When you’re kneading the bread you use vegetable oil, is there a purpose for the oil aside from helping minimize sticking when kneading? Is there something else we could use?
2. When greasing the pan, is there something else we could use aside from the shortening? Butter? The Pam baking spray?

Hi Ines, bake it at 305F for approximately 1 hour. Place a skewer in the centre of the massa at the 1 hour mark. Depending on your oven.... if you need to leave it longer. leave for additional 5 minutes. Thank you🥰
Is there a reason you combine the yeast in the mixer when making 1 massa, but not when you make the 3 or the 6. Thanks again for these recipes😋
Hi George. The 1 bolo massa is a small dough mixture and I don't knead it by hand. The mixer can combine and knead the dough for me. The 3 and 6 bolos, has more dough, therefore, I knead the dough by hand. The yeast is added to all recipes. Thank you😊

Hi Libby... the measurement of the yeast is what I use to make 1 bolo de massa for a 10" x 4" pan, it's fairly larger than my regular 8" pan. Thank you🥰

Hi Ivone...If I make 3 bolos de massa recipe (for example) I freeze 2 bolos, by placing the bolo de massa in a clear plastic bag (1 in each bag) and placing it in the freezer. When you remove the bolo de massa from the freezer, place it on your kitchen counter to defrost overnight. You will have a soft bolo massa the next morning. (Keep it in the bag while defrosting). I keep my bolo de massa in a clear plastic bag on my kitchen counter when I cut into to it.. keep it nice a soft. I hope this helps. 😘
I made it today and it did not rise like it should have. What did I do wrong
Has anyone had success with this recipe? I’ve tried twice now, with no luck. Both times after the 2.5 hour rise, the dough deflates back to batter. And while it does rise to the top of the pan. The baked texture is crumbly not fluffy. What’s the scoop?

So I inharited my grandma’s recipe. I’ve made it the same way everytime!. Last two times I’ve had to throw it away yes away. Please tell me I’ve asked everyone in my family who makes it. I know maybe an outsider can help. My dough rised WATERY. I check yeast date so wasn’t that. I use name brand flour. Room temp was perfect. So I’m lost and didn’t make it again. And I have had a success the other times I made it. Ugh cried both times I had to through it out.

Hi I show the recipe step by step, and this is a recipe. The measurement of the flour needs to be exact. Each cup of flour should be 250ml. It may be that you have too much liquid. The butter and milk measurements are on my description. When you are kneading the dough and you find it's sticky "NOT WATERY" then you are on the right track. As you knead it and let it rise, the dough will become thicker and fluffier. If you find it's watery when kneading (1st knead) add 1/2 a cup of flour at a time. Don't throw it out. If you end up adding more flour, you may end up with 2 bolos de massa instead of 1 large one. Email me at diywithnancy@gmail.com with any questions. Send me photos if possible. Check the expiry date on the yeast.
1 1/2 tablespoon of yeast? Is in it to much. Won’t you taste the yeast ?
It's a large loaf. You don't taste yeast.
