Please tell your friend/relative to wear shoes when working in the garage. Tools/parts fall and it would hurt like hell to have something land on his toes.
I did plugs on my e39 540. After that I was getting misfires and partial misfires while under load at low rpm (below 2000). I had to take the plugs out and tighten the air gap very slightly and that fixed it. They say the plugs come pre-gaped.
Great content! I'm doing a tune up on my E63 M6: sparkplugs, 1 coilpack replacement, air filters, cabin filters. Having a reliable shop near me do it (i don't have a garage). Does $975 sound reasonable? Thanks!
Appreciate this video VERY much. About to do all 10 plugs and coils and always tend to go online first to see if someone has the tricks sorted out. Curious did you happen to grease the coil packs before placing them back on? Also, why not replace coil packs when doing plugs? Thanks for the detailed video!!!!!!!
For sure. Though my 1995 750il had a V12 packed in there and it wasn't too much bigger than an E60 M5 but much easier to work on. It was a SOHC engine though, so that's probably why it had more room.
hi. i listened this model of M5 E60 from 2005 or 2006 had some problems with hidraulic pump of smg gearbox. could you tell us if you had problems with hidraulic pump or any other problems with gearbox? thank you. best regards.
You need to do some more videos about the e60, not a lot of them on YT. Oh and i can't find any videos on that ferrari that's parked next to it, maybe do an exhaust clip and a walk around of it?
I'll do whatever I can on the E60, but it's my dad's car, and he probably won't be keeping it all too long. I can definitely do a walk around on the Ferrari though, it's a 1998 355 F1 Spider that my family has owned since 2005 and 6,000 miles. It has just over 30,000 miles now.
I did a Google search to see which plugs the E60 uses, and a popular article on M5Board listed these NGK plugs, so I went with them! I don't have a Bosch/NGK preference.

I know this is an old video but my S85 shows misfire on #4. All of the forums show cylinder count from the firewall driver side(US) as #1 and same side to radiator as #5. You list it otherwise. Who is correct? Thanks
The cylinders at the back would be much easier to get to if you removed the cabin filters above the strut bar. They're pretty easy to remove and it only takes about 5 extra minutes. Just make sure you disconnect the connections on the passenger side first.
I would absolutely not recommend that, there are far too many sensitive components up there. I've never seen an S85 that is dirty though. Take the time to clean it by hand and then keep it nice.
I've washed down my engine before, just be careful with it and don't get too close. I live in Phoenix and the sand gets everywhere! First time was about 2 years ago, never had an issue :)
I understand that this might be 2 years too late but when i heard you say cylinder 5&10 are practically gonna be a b**** to do i noticed that you guys didn’t remove the cabin air filter housings and covers. That would have freed up more than enough room to much easier access cylinder 5&10. Its the same with the v8 e60/63/64 and cyl 6 for all the inline bmw’s in general.
That's doable too, but I'd rather not go through having to remove all of those plastics, since 'building the tool' inside the cylinder head isn't that bad.
Hello. I have a question, maybe you can help me. I have a restless idle. It also makes itself felt during the journey, if you drive as an example constant 50, one feels light bumps. I also noticed, when I drive at high speed, sometimes falls off the head display, as well as radio. I am very grateful for any help. The BMW workshop did not notice anything during the diagnosis, unfortunately. Another info would be that the vehicle indicates overvoltage when connected to the diagnostic device. Thanks in advance.
This could be almost anything. You need a BMW shop to diagnose the electrical system/engine of your vehicle. Find a well-established independent BMW service facility.

Perhaps they've just been in there a super long time? If the engine is running well otherwise, with new plugs, I wouldn't worry about the color of the old plugs too much. These engines are very unique.

Oh that's a fun surprise! We have had a few break on us since this video was made, and got them out with channel locks. Obviously, that (those) coil(s) will need to be replaced.
The rear cylinders are NOT behind the firewall lol.. That would take away the point of the firewall. They're just underneath the cowling which can be removed very easily
Which cylinder(s) is it misfiring on? I would start with replacing all 10 plugs. If you have a misfire on say cylinder 3 and 7, move those coil packs to maybe cylinders 1 and 9. See if the misfire codes move WITH the coils. If so, you know you have bad coils in those cylinders.
You should have used the iridium equivalent plug - lasts longer than platinum(typically platinum will last about 50,000km, iridium 100,000km+) - no disadvantages at all other than they are a bit more expensive - but for the insane amount of shit you have to pull off and put back on this, worth the extra money for the time you save not having to do it again. The coil pack order doesn't matter - they should all be identical, if they aren't all behaving the same way then they need replacing.

The look and the sound of this car makes whatever it takes to keep it going worth it. It does need timing belt services, which are engine-out services, every few years though. Which are annoying and expensive. But once you find a good shop, it's not that bad.
It's also not a terrible DIY if you don't care about resale value. One guy did a 7-part series on TH-cam showing how he did the engine-out service himself.
What worked was spinning the coil 180 degrees a few times. The driver side was much harder. The left came out in just a few minutes. Completed the whole thing in 2.5 hours! 😁 Most of that time spent on driver side coil removal. Cheers.

Joey $10000.00 bucks for a belt service on those.
Joey cuz it's his dads and he can own what ever he wants.
10k your better off buying a LP640 LAMBORGHINI as those are similar to maintain and Lamborghini LP640 is a much better car.
Harbor freight tools for the win! Fuck yah!!!
No external view of the car 😔
I want one, but learning about the rod bearings needing to be replaced every 50-60k makes me think again.
Pig Farmer Ben got mine changed for 1800. bot a big deal
That's good to know. That's not a bad deal for what it is.
My coils are really hard to remove! Help!
Be patient! Use a 3/8 3-6" socket extension in the flip up part of the coil and firmly pull straight up with an even amount of force on both sides.
What worked was spinning the coil 180 degrees a few times. The driver side was much harder. The left came out in just a few minutes. Completed the whole thing in 2.5 hours! 😁 Most of that time spent on driver side coil removal. Cheers.
23 +/- 3 Nm... Not 22 ft lb.
Bufan666 MuayThai is that like 17 ft lb?

I've never seen a need before, and have never used it. We have also never had trouble getting the plugs out.
