If the Mini 7 had a brighter display I might just have replaced my M2 iPad Pro with it. I still might though as I love the Mini form factor and it perfectly suits how I use my iPad. But that display still being 500 nits is a bit of a dealbreaker. I’m already having a hard time using my iPad Pro outside as it only has 600 nits, what more with 500 nits?
If it’s any help, to my eyes it only really makes a huge difference with HDR content and in bright bright sunshine. Which, in the UK isn’t that often 😁
@ I live in the Philippines so bright sunshine is basically everyday here except for rainy months 😂 I’ll check it out in store to see how it looks under bright lights

I kept my mini 6 because it has data. I grabbed a mi I 7 higher storage to replace my 8 year old iPad that’s finally crapped out. I usually use 2 iPads for different use cases so now I’ll have 2 minis and I’m fine with that. I love the mini

There are a great many pilots and aviators that use the iPad mini 6 in the cockpit for ForeFlight and other GPS and weather radar software. Do you know how this new iPad mini 7 compares in regards to performance when running applications like ForeFlight? As a student pilot I’m thinking about upgrading but I’m not sure if the performance boost is worth it. Although ForeFlight is starting to run slower on the iPad mini 6 so I may be forced to upgrade here in a year or so.
I don’t have a direct test to show you, but I saw another report showing that the iPad Mini 7th gen performs similarly to the new M2 iPad Air in terms of gaming and multi core performance. I bet you’d see a big jump in Foreflight. I also had the iPad Mini 6th gen up until recently and know what you mean, it was starting to run slow. You’ll see a difference even jumping between apps.
Great as always Mark! I think you're spot on. Apple didn't go above and beyond on this one. I also have the M4 11 and I just don't see the Mini fitting in anywhere. Be interesting if they were to make a Mini Pro. Might consider that.

That’s a big step down in terms of screen size - whether you’re keeping both or switching between the two. Are you 100% sure you want the mini 6 form factor? You could sell both and keep the pencil and get maybe an 11” iPad Air 5th gen or 11” iPad Pro 4th gen, with some spare change?
@ I was in Apple Store today. Air weight is 600 g with case and pen and feels too heavy for my jointpain to hold long. But journals looks weird in landscape on the mini because their is so much weird empty space in landscape modus. Like the goodnote journals are not fitting and are lot using the whole page. Still don’t know which one I should buy.

Good spot! I swapped them round by accident when I was talking. The mini (slightly) underperforms the iPhone 15 Pro Max even when both are running the A17 Pro chip. The one in the iPhone has more cores, hence the difference.

And if you switch to another app and come back after 20 seconds, the game often restarts. Is it 4 GB of RAM or is Call of Duty: Warzone so raw?
From what I can tell the battery size across the range for iPad Mini/iPad Air 11”/iPad Pro 11” is exactly the same. That seems mad but all the specs quoted on Apple’s site give the same expected usage.

Thank you for your comment because this was my deciding factor to upgrade my 6 to the 7. I’m a digital planner so I would enjoy the pencil pro and Hoover but that was it besides battery for me.
It's early days yet but happy to report that all the email integrations and summarising notifications etc work as advertised. It hasn't got the wider OpenAI integrations yet though, so the context and talk-to-Siri stuff is quite limited still.

Same amount of CPU cores, one less GPU core. Unlikely you’ll notice it. Maybe was done to reduce heat or improve battery life. Or maybe they had thousands of chips with one failed GPU.

Because the iPad Mini has a much bigger screen than the 15 Pro Max at 8.3 inches compared to 6.7 inches, but its battery is not that much bigger. The 15 Pro Max has a 4,441 mAH battery, the iPad Mini has a 5,078 mAH battery, that’s only a 637 mAH difference for a significant screen size increase of 24%. Plus both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPad Mini 7 have nearly identical screen resolutions. It’s why we don’t have the M series chips inside of the iPad Mini, because even just the M1 will have a huge negative impact on the iPad Mini’s battery life, as that is a laptop level chip.

Samsung/Android needs an 8.X "pro" tablet with 120Hz, OLED, and Fingerprint scanner on Power button or in-display. The mini size is so nice, I had the 6 and ended up selling it. I wanted an eReader size tablet to compliment my 11 in tablet I use in landscape for writing and video. These companies don't seem to get what consumers want, and for Apple their followers justify buying their BS - until that changes - they wont innovate or get competitive - consumers should NEVER be satisified and KEEP your FOOT on these companies NECKS - we should have FLEW into a rage and boycotted when they started to charge over $1,000.00 for cellphones - and over the last several years the "upgrades" have been "meh" - so the cost should have decreased - nope. Consumers need to take back their power, these companies stopped competitng and we suffer for it
Samsung could clean up this area of the market with that type of device. Odd though...they've had opportunities to collar Apple users on a few occasions now (thinking of their M-series monitors as a Studio Display competitor)...they've not quite done it yet.
Yeah I think that's it. It's the bare minimum they could have done without raising the price. I do think people would have been happier paying more to get more though....perhaps I'm in the minority there. If you're dropping $600 on an iPad and you have the choice of the new M2 iPad Air or this...the only reason you're going for the iPad Mini is because you like the size. In which case you've got a captive audience of people who would spend a little more to get a better/brighter screen.
Did you say that about the iPad Air or base iPad when they updated them? Same type of upgrade but the popular message with the Air was that it was the iPad for most people while this tablet is getting 💩 on for no reason
That’s right. The difference between a 256GB iPad Mini and iPad Air is negligible. You have to really want the iPad Mini form factor to consider that over an iPad Air.
I think that some people had unrealistic expectations. It’s just taking the previous Mini and upgrading the internals to more modern specs. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s not meant to be some kind of Mini Pro like some people are dreaming of. That’s probably never going to be a thing, because I don’t think there’s enough people willing to pay what that would cost.

I think 512 is a lot unless the video files you’re working with are 4K or something like Apple log.

These companies don't seem to get what consumers want, and for Apple their followers justify buying their BS - until that changes - they wont innovate or get competitive - consumers should NEVER be satisified and KEEP your FOOT on these companies NECKS - we should have FLEW into a rage and boycotted when they started to charge over $1,000.00 for cellphones - and over the last several years the "upgrades" have been "meh" - so the cost should have decreased - nope. Consumers need to take back their power, these companies stopped competitng and we suffer for it
Samsung could clean up this area of the market with that type of device. Odd though...they've had opportunities to collar Apple users on a few occasions now (thinking of their M-series monitors as a Studio Display competitor)...they've not quite done it yet.

Yeah I think that's it. It's the bare minimum they could have done without raising the price. I do think people would have been happier paying more to get more though....perhaps I'm in the minority there. If you're dropping $600 on an iPad and you have the choice of the new M2 iPad Air or this...the only reason you're going for the iPad Mini is because you like the size. In which case you've got a captive audience of people who would spend a little more to get a better/brighter screen.
Did you say that about the iPad Air or base iPad when they updated them? Same type of upgrade but the popular message with the Air was that it was the iPad for most people while this tablet is getting 💩 on for no reason
That’s right. The difference between a 256GB iPad Mini and iPad Air is negligible. You have to really want the iPad Mini form factor to consider that over an iPad Air.
I think that some people had unrealistic expectations. It’s just taking the previous Mini and upgrading the internals to more modern specs. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s not meant to be some kind of Mini Pro like some people are dreaming of. That’s probably never going to be a thing, because I don’t think there’s enough people willing to pay what that would cost.
