The camera is aimed at "content creators" and people who want ot have a very compact camera. The three cool aspects of the camera are:
1) Compact Size:
The Lumix S9 is just a tiny bit smaller than the X100VI (also because it gets rid of the EV). Yes, you still need to buy an extra lens for it but we have some nice option with the Sigma DG DN contemporary lineup (Click here). Overall this will make it barely bigger than the Fuji.
2) LUT style:
The camera LUT's capability should also attract those Fujifilm customers that love to use their own film recipes.
3) Price:
Now compact camera lovers can buy the Lumix S9 instead of a Ricoh GR or FujiFilm X100VI. it will have about the same size, about the same price but you get the benefit of higher Image Quality thanks to the use of the excellent 25Mp Full Frame sensor.

The megapixel race is over. Now it’s time for the Film Sim race. All the cool kids want LUTS!
Exactly!
I hope the megapixel race is not over. There are a lot of photographers still waiting on a Lumix high megapixel camera. Currently I have the S5 and S5iiX which are great for videos and okay for photos but I really want a 50mp or above Lumix camera as well for photos.
All the brainwashed kids who don’t know how to edit
Кids using phones
@@morganmiller7777 Most photographers know how to edit, they just a point and click camera they don't need to edit. We already edit all day.
This is a smart move. Cameras are so similar these days that the real X factor now will be size. Whoever can make a camera like the Sigma FP but with phase detect AF will have a huge advantage on the market. Very very little resson to need more than that.
So many people are sleeping on the real time LUT feature of S5ii. MAKE YOUR OWN LUT.
I made my own LUT before my Japan trip and every single JPEG came out absolutely stunning. It’s basically a DIY but more advanced Fujifilm recipe.
If you don’t know how to edit and get shit almost there straight out
Sounds like they designed a vlogger camera and are trying to capture the X100VI market with it. No EVF is a dealbreaker. Not sure why the compact rangefinder-style model is so hard for manufacturers to figure out. There should already be a Pen F replacement, X-pro 4, GX camera etc.
they could be clever and launch an EVF for the hotshoe
I'm still interested in this camera and think it's good overall for the L-Mount. I definitely would have preferred an EVF as well though. Maybe this is their "less premium" model, and there'll be a higher-end offering down the road?
Panasonic has proven they can make great rangefinder style-bodjes (GX like you mentioned). Hopefully, they'll come through in the end.
First thing that comes to mind (for me at least), as an X100VI competitor would be a reworked LX100 series. If they wanted to go the retro camera-route, they were probably already 85% of the way there with the LX100 body. They could either put more features in the current LX100II body (with an even better lens) and/or bump up the size to X100-level and go more premium with a potentially longer zoom. Could even go more miniature if they wanted with really excellent fixed primes (Ricoh GR-esque). I actually like the variety of possibilities that comes with MFT. I know other people want APS-C or larger though.
I was hoping for a fixed Lens Lumix, with an EVF - similar to the Leica Q - I had even hoped they would pair it with a 35mm lens.
Sadly another rumour that gave me hope, and is now dead, sad - I want a Leica X replacement, and dont want to pay the ridiculous price for the Q - and I am not totally sold on the Fuji.
@@juanQuedo I dont think its possible with a normal hotshoe.
@@-_ch40s_ we don't know if it has hotshoe at all at this point, so everything could be possible
No EVF no party.
Even a mid tier EVF or below mid tier would be great. Nothing fancy. Just an entry level good enough EVF. With an EVF the S9 could have been the perfect competition for the A7C line.
yep!
We can still hold out hope for an A7CII competitor. If we're going model-for-model, the S9 also *kind of* matches up against the ZVE1 as well (also no viewfinder, but neither does the FX3 to be fair). Not a perfect comparison with either, since Sony has really segmented their bodies there. I guess Panasonic tried to split the difference between the two (A7CII and ZVE1). It comes in cheaper than either one which is a plus.
Fingers crossed that this is the entry rangefinder and there's a premium version on the horizon (that's still not too expensive).
@@ywmedia yeah let’s hope this is the first one, the made for Dummies
Nice little rangefinder will be ausome.
I mean, you could probably add an external viewfinder on the hot shoe, no?
If they also have an f2-2.8 pancake prime with this iam totally pre ordering it. Already rocking my S5IIX with my own LUTs and Panasonic beeing the first one to adapt this function is killer 🎉
I hope we'll see some Leica looks in this 😊
I imagine there's a *ton* of current S5ii/x owners eyeing this for a second body or b cam (including myself). I was also seriously considering the X100VI as an EDC! S5II is just a little too big (for me) to use as a family or travel cam. S9 with a nice pancake would be perfect for me
@@ywmediaI'm considering this for a B cam to my future G9ii. Just for light situations. 😁
Thanks Andreea. ❤️🔥
My pleasure!
As a Fuji user the LUT thing has my interest. I am keeping my eye on Panasonic.
Who needs an EVF anyways? Do you need one with your iPhone? Or your GoPro? This camera is a video creators oriented camera. Hope it will sell well ❤
Damned good point
Agree, I recently bought a GX80 for only photography, and I haven’t use the EVF once, and it doesn’t even have a flip screen.
You must not know what focusing on the best composition is all about. Not saying we can’t compose with the LCD, and do it well, but it will never be the same as viewing everything in the scene through a viewfinder. No full frame interchangeable should ever be compared to smartphone shooting🤣. No amateurs welcome.
@@9adriano21brainwashed generation. You can’t see the entire scene the same way, you just can’t. Sorry buddy.
When I do street photography, I simply don't always use the EV. Some folks literally shoot from the hip. Or on the ground. Plenty of cameras don't have an EV. It's not a new idea. It pre-dates cell phones.
I'm more excited about the S lenses that'll accompany this camera's arrival.
I heard about one ;)
@@andrea_pizzini 28mm ?
@@Chips-Lab that would be awesome
@@andrea_pizzini S Pro ? Because my 50mm f1.4 really start to get bored.
Hopefully a f2.8 or 3.5 compact prime, between 30 and 40mm 🙏🏼
Hmm, small, with IBIS (saw in one of your notes), FF…could be tempting. Would have preferred mft however if also light like the Fuji (520 grams approx) I will definitely be tempted. Now if weather-sealed I’m preordering.
What are the rumors on the lens?
This video totally reminds me about the Toneh Northrup joke... Andrea, we want to see the beautiful landscape. Too much toneh :D!
So it’s interchangeable L mount!?!?
That sounds awesome. Competing with ZV E1 and the Leica Q3.
I already have 2 lumix s5ii’s, so I don’t know where this will fit into my lineup, but it sounds like a great fit for my current L mount lenses for travel
Yes it's L-mount!
Wish it had an evf. 😫
I hope in the future they will make such a camera too!
Yep, that's a deal killer for me.
This camera is actually interesting. It's looking basically like a Full Frame GM1 with IBIS and Hot Shoe. If it has a sub $1,500 price it could be a hit even with M43 users. Yeah, no EVF.. but think of this as very capable compact backup camera. Now if only Panasonic made a m43 version too..
Total lut control is way better then restricted picture profiles
YES!
I use Fuji X-T5 and use LUTs in post process. The idea of adding to camera attracts me to this. Also full frame appeals
Luts for picture profiles is amazing.
Ive been looking for a Fullframe compact camera for a while now. I even considered to buy the Sigma FP but I think this camera might be it.
yep!
I'm with you 100%. I've been going back and forth from everything including Sigma FP, A7CII, even Sony RX1. This could be the perfect compact cam for anyone already invested in L-mount.
I was just looking at the fp, too. FF compact would be so darned clutch
I have a Sony ZV-e1 and an S5IIx. The Sony is a beast in a small package, and I use it for its compatibility for field reports and stories. The only problem is that I have more lenses for the Lumix. I hope that the next thing Lumix will introduce with the S9 is a more compact and small zoom lens, which will make it a hit among content creators.
Does no evf not mean it cant have an optical viewfinder? Hence rangefinder. Thoughts?
No way that happens
if it comes out that design would buy it
Yes...very close!
Welcome to the era of the color preset cameras!
Definitely!
Welcome to the era of people not knowing a damn thing about the art of photography
is it possible to attach an EVF on the hotshoe? if so, it wont be a dealbreaker for me.
don't think so.
I can also install luts on my a7cII and yet I want a x100vi cause their receipes of those classic color styles are just unbeaten. So it will still be the x100vi for me as I won’t cancel my preorder.
Correct if I'm wrong but in A7C II you can only apply LUTs for video right ? If yes then it's a big difference. Second I tried different brands and I had biggest difficulty with Sony to have a nice looking result even with their newest cameras. With Canon R8 for example I could easily recreate some Fuji looks with DxO Photolab and save them as preset. Having both A7C II and X100VI is also a nice option. I right now have Canon R8 and Fuji X-E4 with 27 f2.8 but every time I leave house I have mental battle which one should I take. This new Panasonic could blend nicely benefits of both in my case at least.
Yeah, it's the luts being used in photo that's really cool. It's really competing with Fuji. It won't have the ease of use of x100 series but it'll get a few new folks
Hm, I wonder if they won’t release a m43 version of this till a while after the gh7 comes out. Not personally interested in FF, but if like the G9ii, they are planning on recycling the body down to the G line, maybe it would make a good b-cam released in a year or so.
M43 is just not good enough anymore when you have mobile phones with 1 inch sensors.
@@toysars have changeable lenses and access to flashes makes a dedicated camera always better than a phone.
@@toysarsCurrent m43 sensors are significantly better than the best one inch sensors. Also the tiny lenses on cellphones aren't even in the same league as full size m43 lenses.
@@toysars
You are a complete moron if you believe that.
I love that design style - I hope they are close (but add a shutter release!). I hope it is weather sealed.
The design I am showing here is CLOSE to the real deal!
Oh awesome!
Full frame, weather sealed, IBIS, interchangeable lenses, compact body, sub $1500? If that's the case, I'll pre order right away, and that's coming from someone who's been in the market for a fuji for a while now.
I have always wondered if we would ever get a rangefinder styled camera with FF sensor (Fuji X-Pro style) that has the Hasselblad Xpan aspect ratio (65:24), which the Panasonic S5II has. So all Panasonic has to do is "change nothing" and that ratio option should be in the S9 :) Now if only it had an EVF...
Seems like the Pen F was too early. Wonder why camera makers are going to copy now that Olympus is basically defunct
I shoot S5iiX with real-time lut loaded for jpegs. Panasonic makes some excellent v-log luts... just not marketed as well as fuji film-sim tbh
Agreed!
That retro rangefinder style shutter release button placement is looking good on the ai image😂
It does!
Any update to the dlux8 rumor??
Coming max tomorrow. Announcement is NOT going tom happen in May.
Would love to see compact EVF headsets some day soon. Never need to get your head down low for a shot again😅
agreed
Sounds interesting. Not to go off topic too much but it seems Panasonic has just registered a patent application for a new “boxed style” camera like the BGH1 and BS1H, only with advanced features and a screen. Exciting year for Panasonic.
yes they plan to announce two more cameras soon after the S9 ;)
@@andrea_pizzini Thanks Andrea! Stay warm!
I will ;)
I would love to see Canon come out with an AE-1 Program, looking Digital Camera with Kodak picture profiles and a make your own Lut feature. This camera would outsell, R5, R1 and R3 series cameras, especially if it came in at a Nikon ZF price.
This looks like an update of the Leica CL from 2018.
Grazie Andrea
Tilt screen or fully articulated (flip out lateral) screen? 😊
Will ask my sources now...
@@andrea_pizzini ask about IBIS too

Nothing beats my LX100
True....and only a FF version could beat it ;)
Is there an update to the dlux8 rumor?
Will there be any M43 cameras this year?
One from OM Digital for sure. I don't know if Panasonic will launch the GH7
Take my money!!!
I will give you my bank details :)
But today there is a big Lumix event in Osaka, please what's going on ??? 😅
the camera will probably shown there to press and TH-cam People who then have some days to film their videos and test the camera etc. On My 22nd the camera then will be revealed to the public I guess
Hasn’t this already been possible on the S5II?
Not with a dedicated button. And there are also some additional new features (don't know the details yet)
@@andrea_pizzini I'm looking forward to FF fixed lens options. I've been using my 12 year old Sony RX1 and have been happy with the image rendering and can overlook the lack of modern conveniences.
Hope they release a compact pancake lens with this camera, 28mm or 35mm or 40mm. Otherwise this camera won't be able to compete with X100VI. The existing L-mount lenses including the lenses from Sigma are not compact enough.
the sigma i series lenses are confusing. They're all-metal, so they are not particularly light. And they're not even weather sealed!
Is the lens supposed to be the 28-70 fast f/2
nope
@@andrea_pizzini what lens will it be?
@@philrodfilms It'd make sense for them to announce an extra compact lens. Probably won't be very fast.
Panasonic S1R is Leica SL2 , what is this compact camera ? A clone Leica Q2 or 3 ? 😊
Not close. The sensor is vastly different, as will be any lens you put on it unless you adapt a Leica M.
Also, SL2 is a much nicer system, with a bit of special sauce in the sensor, and the SL

will we hear about other cameras too?

how come nobody is competing against ricoh gr
Super niche. GRiii and Griii x are amazing though, and the image quality is hands down better Han the x100v.
Hmm!! The camera is elegant
Leica-look is cool!
Yes it will have a clean look. Hope to get the real images soon ;)
It’s drifting away from my liking so far, but the potential market is clearly there.
Perfect! if it can attach EVF on the hot shoe.

@@andrea_pizzini Wow! Thank you as always!
Yes, a good question! I love the old round Leica VFs they had for the Barnack Leica III rangefinders.
Sounds exciting, hope we will get some pancake lenses as an addition to the L mount lens line up!
hope so too!
Wow! They gonna make a bigger FP....
with ibis, presumably. It will be interesting to see whether they put a mechanical shutter in it.
@@m22235given Panasonic's record, this should be way more usable than a Sigma FP for everyday hybrid shooting (including IBIS like you mentioned). I've been wanting a Sigma FP for a long time, but the (supposed) quirks were too much to justify getting one.
If it's smaller than X100VI as it's rumored, then the S9 is going to be very similar in size to the Sigma FP. Plus it will likely have a flip screen, IBIS, and a more ergonomic body as well. Once you add on an extra grip to the FP (like a lot of people do) it becomes quite a bit bigger.
I fail to understand what is stopping Sony from giving us the option to add our own presets for photos and Luts for videos, it will be a game changing feature and will definitely encourage a lot of people to bring out their large FF mirrorless more often!
I know a few Sony shooters. They absolutely hate the lut idea. I always get the comments at how stupid it is to create your own style. So, maybe Sony has heard it from their people?
@@aronaldharper543they hate it because they don't have it 😉
A compact Full Frame camera smaller than the X100? How about including a viewfinder and make it the same size? Not having a EVF is an absolute no from me. My first ever EVF was on my GF-1. It was tiny and passable and to think 12 years later they cant do better? Ugh
Any trade in deals? I have an s5.

how can this be a x100vi's competitor without a viewfinder?
LUT's, compact size, affordable price
@@andrea_pizzini yeah... but not viewfinder.... people mainly choose the x100 line for its aesthetics and the viewfinder.

What's LUT? :)
It stands for Look Up Table, and it's a reference for a camera or image processing program to skew and adjust colors, luminance and detail based on that specific recipe (LUT). They apply predetermined sets of mathematical formulas to your video or photo's existing colors to change those colors and achieve a desired result.
@@CalebMcLellan I see! Thanks for explaining! Best wishes :)
Does it have an ' award winning photo' button ? 🎉
Now that would be nice...AI generation button :)
One more step toward the progressive move away from M43 for Panasonic it would seem.
Why are companies not competing with the x100v? So stupid.
No EVF is a dealbreaker for me. I find it insane that they are trying to challenge the x100 series without one...
It is only for the younger generation, they are not used to an EVF. WHY does Pana exclude such a large group of potential customers? Are they insane?
@@ruhri0411seriously? What on earth do you think you get with every mobile phone?
@@colinstock325 I would also have preferred an EVF. But I agree that to many people an EVF just doesn't matter as much as it used to. I definitely wouldn't call this an *insane* choice by Panasonic. Sony has FX3 and ZV-E1 don't have a viewfinder either. And nowhere does Panasonic say that this will be their only (FF) rangefinder, and I expect there to be other options going forward.
For everyone complaining about lack of EVF, I get it. But every company (not just camera companies) will look at their competitive advantage vs cost. Advantages for S9 vs X100VI is FF sensor, custom LUT upload, interchangeable lenses (among other advantages). These are advantages for some, others won't care or even view them as drawbacks. For others, the EVF is a "deal breaker". I'm sure Panasonic has considered all those possibilities.
They're pricing this lower than the S5II. I imagine if they include an EVF that would make the bodies more similar than Panasonic would like and/or it puts them out of a competitive advantage (body is suddenly bigger).
There's also another group that would likely be interested in this body--current S5II/x owners looking for a B cam. I fall into that group.

Plus Fuji’s AF is mediocre!
There’s room for other manufacturers to try to catch up with Fuji.
No EVF is a terrible decision that gives into the vlogging digital smartphone generation. Nobody knows how to shoots stills anymore. Sad days for photography.
This makes no sense without an accompanying pancake sized lens. Sony has 2.8/35. Nikon has 2.8/26 and 2/40. Sigma's compact line is small but nowhere near pancake size.
