Why There Is Light on Earth But Not in Space

  • If you’re not a morning person, then you’d probably love living on the moon or out in space! The whole “lack of oxygen” thing aside, a ‘round-the-clock night sky sounds pretty tempting! But why is there so much light on Earth, but almost none once you leave our planet?
    You might think that it’s light during the day and dark at night because the Earth spins on its axis, and the Sun illuminates either hemisphere. That’s part of the reason, but it’s more complicated than that. Our star shines on the Moon too, but the sky above it is always black!

    SUMMARY:
    The atmosphere surrounding our Earth is full of dust, dirt, gases, and water droplets - which all act like tiny mirrors and reflect the sunlight.
    If you find yourself on the Moon, where there’s no atmosphere, the sky will be black. You’ll be able to see the stars even when the sun is blazing on the surface during the lunar day.
    In the early 19th century, German astronomer Wilhelm Olbers suggested that the reason the sky is dark at night was a dusty veil that hid most of the stars from us.
    Thanks to our fancy powerful telescopes, we now know that it takes light billions of years to get to us from the farthest stars.
    Modern telescopes can show us that the light started its journey to the Earth about 10 billion years ago. The more powerful telescopes get, the further back in time we can see.
    But don’t all those distant stars give at least some noticeable light on this planet? It’d be like switching on a ton of tiny halogen light bulbs. They’re not as bright as one big LED bulb, but they do give off part of its light.
    Space might be empty compared to the Earth’s atmosphere, but there are a lot of gases out there. They move around, form clouds, and serve as a sort of veil hiding most of the light in the Milky Way.
    The theory states that the Universe was born in a Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago. Since that time, everything has been moving away from the point where it all began.
    Sources of light also move away and spread out, which means space is getting darker, and the number of black areas is growing.
    Astronomers think that most of the matter in the universe is invisible, and it looks like black emptiness to the human eye.
    If you remember the electromagnetic spectrum from back in school, you’ll know that visible light is just a tiny sliver of all those wavelengths and frequencies.
    Red, blue, purple, yellow, orange - the whole color wheel depending on which gases make them up!

    To make a long Bright Side answer short: Space is black because there is nothing for light to illuminate on. The Earth's sky is bright because the atmosphere has gas, and thus something the sun can illuminate on. Space is mostly empty pockets of nothing, and nebulas are bright because they are composed of mostly hydrogen gas, so the nearby stars can shine on something.
    The photons that stars produce cannot shine on something in space, making it so dark.

    Lemme save you 8 min with the simplest explanation.
    It's because Space is empty space. Light can only be seen when it reflects off of a surface (any kind of matter) or when observed directly from it's source. So light can't be seen on space bc it's almost devoid of matter -hence why it's an empty space- which light would reflect from.
    I say "almost devoid" because there's still a very small amount of floating dust particles in space.

    • @MarioCini1
      @MarioCini1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know you are technically right, but I'm having a bit of a hard time accepting that argument. You know these strobe lights they place on top of stadium roofs ? They light up the sky at night and, even without the presence of clouds to reflect incident rays back, vertical twin beams can be seen dancing around each other from miles away without having to see the source itself. Only explanation for that is the presence of dust particles that refract light to the eyes watching it. But if that were the case then we shouldn't have to throw powder in front of a laser pen to see the red beam...what am i missing ?

    • @frankservant5754
      @frankservant5754 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarioCini1 Well you are right light from those strobes is from lasers which is a collimated (concentrated) light, it does not "spread-out" in space hence it has a very high intensity so it can be seen over a distance. Light from stars isn't and its intensity weakens because it "spreads-out" in space , because the distances between stars are so large you only see a weak "spot"(stars). On the laser however, during the day you can't see them because the background light is too bright in which case you use smoke so it scatters the light. Same way you can't see anything else if someone blinds shines their bright headlights in your face, but then you can when they dim them.

    Two points. In addition to scattering sunlight, our atmosphere also filters out some of the parts of the spectrum. This is why we send up satellites to observe gamma rays, x-rays, parts of the ultraviolet spectrum, and infrared.
    Second, in terms of the electromagnetic spectrum, from low energy (and longer wavelengths) to high energy (and shorter wavelengths), the proper order is: radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays.

So imagine if your in a room with a light bulb, now imagine the walls are expanding, its gonna be farther the light travels and doesn’t have enough energy to light the whole room. That’s space lol I’m high

    it might help you to imagine why when you shine your flashlight at the moon, it doesn't light up on the surface. Everything in our galaxy is so far away from us and everything else, that light cannot illuminate. Our sun can illuminate the earth, moon and other planets in our solar system, but can't reach anything else. If the sun was the size of a small pea here on earth, the nearest star would be 127 miles away.

      The Moon's surface + the Sun is very bright during the day. Astronauts on the Moon couldn't see stars because their eyes were overwhelmed (= dilated pupils) by the glare. I mean check out how many fewer stars you see in the night sky when there's a full Moon, and that's from the Earth. Imagine you're standing on the Moon - you need sunglasses because of all the reflected light.
