Erik hulzebosch joke is like watching a 200m sprint with your wife and you saying: "Did you know I can run faster than Jason Bolt?" Her: "You probably mean Usain Bolt?" You: "No Jason, Usain is much too fast"
I’ve seen this show. It was titled After The Break. Finkers has a rare form of leukemia and his prognosis was not encouraging, less than 5 years. However, the treatments seem to be working so after a break in performing that lasted 7 years, he returned to the stage with this bittersweet show. Since then he has made several appearances on tv and made a movie that, in all honesty, was really good. As an American you cannot appreciate his regional accent which he uses on purpose. You can compare him to Jeff Foxworthy in that respect. It adds an extra dimension to his humor which can be very subtle.
Herman Finkers is great! Some months ago he was at a programme about opera kind of music and afterwords i went with him on a picture. He made even on that programme jokes, even that it was a serious programme haha
At 2.28 the subtitles are wrong: he did not say 'pregnancy is the most preventable sexually transmitted disease'. He said 'pregnancy is the most common sexually transmitted disease'.
@@j.kuipers700yeah, while that is true, the commonly used dutch term for this concept is SOA (sexueel overdraagbare aandoening) and the commonly used english term is STD (sexually transmitted disease) when translating its better to translate on the base of definition and concept. But if you want the translated product to feel lively and genuine, going for the commonly used term is probably the better choice
Also "vastgelopen computers" means frozen computer or crashed computer, but was translated by fixed computer. I dont know if it was due to translation but highly made a totally different interpretation on that joke. And he's being all sarcastic about it by suddenly mentioning these things connected to feeling, while thats clearly not the type of feeling meant
Herman is the master of ‘dry humor’. His most famous joke is about how boring his home town Almelo is: “In Almelo, there is always something going on. The light turns red, and the light turns green again” (in Dutch, it rhymes). It is an image the town of Almelo will never get rid of, no matter how much they spend on city marketing. :)
Love his dialect. I live in the east for years already and it took a while before I really could understand it but now that I do, I love the humor. He's from closer near the German border. Also known as a 'Tukker'. From a town called Almeloooo

See last joke as 'He said to his wife 'I can run faster then Alain Bolt She replied 'You meen Usain Bolt' ' No he's to quick. I struggle with Alain, why would she think I can out run Usain'
a LOT of years ago I wen to 1 of his shows which was in the late 1990's, the show was called rustig aan en rap een beetje which roughly translates to "take it slow and easy, but quickly" He always plays with words, which at times can be really hard to translate in English because litterally translated some things make less sense then in the native Dutch language. He's not trying to be funny but just is, his wife must go crazy. tbh I like to play with words too or respond in a proper way. If my sister asks, may I have a soda... I say .. Yes. a few seconds later she has this annoying look on her face but I answered a question. She didn't ask if I wanted to give her a drink. It took her several months to finally know to ask the right questions... I have trained her well :P
As not Dutchmen you guys don't get the dialect from the guy. He is living in an half country area with farmer villages...and a dialect. Besides this, he is Dutch, so straight forward as they get... 😂
No Herman Finkers does not have dark humor (probably he showed his wife the his text first). We Dutch have many entertainers with dark humor... but Finkers plays with words, and often he himself is the "victem" of his jokes or his brother (that often had a small role in his act). Yes I like those other people that have really dark humor, ofcourse! But I admire Finkers for his creativity without really offending people.
OMG, Herman FInkers! His old work is legendary and extremely quotable! When he lost his moustache, he got a lot less funny though. (I went to the try-out of his New Year's conference and was very disappointed.) Still, if you're not familiar with his old work and thus have nothing to compare his later work with, he still is very funny! :-)
As someone who lives in the south of the netherlands I think Herman's accent is... I dont know how to explain, it just makes you say "aww cute". I also know, if he were like a bit younger (40 years or so, hes 69 now) I would have had a huge crush on him. It might seem weird, I dont have a crush on him now but I can feel I would if he were younger. Anyone else know that feeling or am I just weird? I accept being weird, been weird all my life :-P
Translation cock up: Matennaaier is a male term meaning you screwed over your pal. So when he refuses to see his wife as his mate, he refuses to be someone who screws his mate (over).
The translation you had was not correct in some instances. Quite difficult since the strength of Finkers is his use of language, with a lot of double entendres. Even for Dutch folk very special and unique in style...
that's the only way to do it , i have the same disease, keep positive and enjoy your live and you can get old with it a positive mindset is very important .

Herman is briljant. A true language artist. Doordenkertjes=Thinkers. He is a down to earth Twent. We Tukkers are like that. Just say it like it is.

True. The mistake is made because the Dutch word for both "to prevent" and "to occur" is "voorkomen", except the pronunciation is different.
