There is another subgenre of black metal worth mentioned in here - blackened hardcore, sometimes also called as dark hardcore. Bands like Deluge, Oathbraker, Supruga, Volan and so on. Dragged Into Sunlight has nothing from crust BTW :) For Blackened Crush you better go for Iskra and Martyrdod
The black metal sub-genres that I mostly listen to are DSBM, second wave, atmospheric, melodic and ambient black metal. My favorite black metal bands are: Aara, Der Weg einer Freiheit, Darkspace, Vardan, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Cold World, Apati and Windir.
Pretty damn good list all around! I do admit that I'd probably be tempted to go all the way to an S tier with avant garde black metal, but that's just my oddball sensibilities talking. Like hell, my favorite album of all time is Mr Bungle's Disco Volante, that should say a lot about my tastes in challenging music, hahaha! I'd probably bump industrial black metal up to a C personally, partly because industrial was my big love before I discovered black metal, partly because the really good standout albums (like Dodheimsgard's 666 International, or Aborym's With No Human Intervention) are REALLY fucking good, but the genre as a whole is hit or miss. I don't even know what I'd do with symphonic black metal or progressive black metal, because it all comes down to the quality of the black metal part. Early Limbonic Art albums, Borknagar's The Olden Domain, or Emperor's last couple of albums would score high marks because while the former is very symphony heavy, and the latter are very polished and proggy, they still kick ass and carry the black metal feel. On the flipside, stuff like later Dimmu Borgir or later Enslaved are albums I love on their own merits but come on, they barely qualify as black metal in the least. Most importantly, 2nd wave black metal is absolutely S tier, and the only way I'd change that would be if any other genre were S rank, then I'd say you need an S+ for 2nd wave! LOL

There was one industrial Black metal album from 2000 or 2001 that was insanely good called Thorns' self titled. But for the rest never heard other good stuff in that genre.
Thank you for mentioning Thorns. That self-titled album is the perfect example how amazing Industrial Black Metal can actually be. Farvann should rethink his choice, instead of celebrating embarassing Rammstein..
My tierlist would be: S: Viking metal, blackened-folk metal and melodic. (Enslaved, Windir, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Satangoat/Сатанакозёл, Spectral Wound, Kampfar, Tsaver) A: Atmospheric and modern second wave (Summoning, Falkenbach, Elderwind, Ellende, Eldamar, None, Evilfeast, Wynterfylleth, Batushka) B: Ambient and blackgaze (Lustre, Germ, Alcest) C: Death-black, pagan-metal (worse than folk-black, yes), third wave BM/modern interpretation of BM. Haven't listened to real second wave, principally 😂 The rest of BM styles - not familiar enough to judge.
For "gothic black metal" id include things like kekt arahk, though i usually call it "romantic" black metal. I know im biased but i cant get enough of kekt arahk

lol at NSBM in B-tier I get it, the sound can be super ambiguous and sound like anything. That's why the genre can only be judged by the lyrics and obviously they have to rank in F-tier
Hello! I'm in trouble, because I've loved the black metal music and the atmosphere since I was a teenager, but I'm in trouble with the lyrics. I am neither a Satanist (not even a LaVey type) nor a racist, in fact I would be a helpful, empathetic, calm personality (e.g. I never drink alcohol). Obviously, these topics do not apply to all black metal bands, but they are in the majority. For example, a Carpathian Forest or Gorgoroth is not really compatible with my world, but I still love it. How about it? :)
The only genres I dont really get into are War Black Metal and Thrash Black, I think of bands like Tsjuder and Marduk Ive given multiple tries but after I listen to an album Im just like meh
Try Archgoat, that's actual war metal. Tsjuder and Marduk I'd just call raw black metal. As for thrash black, lots of known bands that play that genre aren't very good - but I'd really recommend Witchery and Desaster.

Would love your opinion on the band Saidan if by some satanic boon you read this, especially the songs I am the Witch, She's Buried Under the Cherry Blossoms, Girl Hell 1999, or Shrine of the Black Sword.
I always consider the number 2 to be between the number 1 and the number 3.
well done farvann 😊
There is a Folk BM band aus Deutschland called “Riger”. I recommend the song “Othala”.
Prog. Black Metal is maybe Kriegsmaschine from Poland.
Ahh I like mgla too
prog black metal some people say it's the later Enslaved stuff, like their albums after 2005 or somewhere around more like 2010 Enslaved and onwards.
The taake song u were thinking of is Myr
It has folk elements with the banjo but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it folk black metal
Still traditional black metal haha
And yes Viking metal is a black metal subgenre I’m not sure if these bands count but I would say bands that are Viking metal are bands like Falkenbach, King of Asgard, Helheim, ect
Btw if you like melodic black metal you should really check out Evil Summons Evil by Deviser, such a good album
Love ya farvann stay safe brother 😎🤘🏻
Gothic Black Metal would be something like Triarchy of the Lost Lovers by Rotting Christ or A Dead Poem by the same band
My personal favorite is Melodic their are so many classic albums it's just impossible for Me to ignore
Can you guys give me some examples of melodic black metal bands i could listen to? That would be awesome thanks!
4:10 Krallice is a great example of prog black metal especially the Years Past Matter album.
Krallice is more Avant-Garde I think
@@manfredmar Maybe, but it's definitely prog too.
As a second/third wave guy from the 90s, this pleases me.
Have you listened to Grabgesang - Of Medieval Graveyard Frost? It’s very good sounds like darkthrone with a bit of immortal I think.
prog bm would be something like Shining, Enslaved, and non opus dei i think.
You are fucking wonderful! That was very enjoyable. 🤘🏽
There was one industrial Black metal album from 2000 or 2001 that was insanely good called Thorns' self titled. But for the rest never heard other good stuff in that genre.
Did you see the whole video?
@@mcalvrd6110 yeah, industrial bm is F tier.
Thank you for mentioning Thorns. That self-titled album is the perfect example how amazing Industrial Black Metal can actually be. Farvann should rethink his choice, instead of celebrating embarassing Rammstein..
Have you heard trhä? Best black metal I've heard right now
Please do more subgenre tier lists
My tierlist would be:
S: Viking metal, blackened-folk metal and melodic.
(Enslaved, Windir, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Satangoat/Сатанакозёл, Spectral Wound, Kampfar, Tsaver)
A: Atmospheric and modern second wave
(Summoning, Falkenbach, Elderwind, Ellende, Eldamar, None, Evilfeast, Wynterfylleth, Batushka)
B: Ambient and blackgaze
(Lustre, Germ, Alcest)
C: Death-black, pagan-metal (worse than folk-black, yes), third wave BM/modern interpretation of BM.
Haven't listened to real second wave, principally 😂
The rest of BM styles - not familiar enough to judge.
I think industrial black isn't that bad, Covenant and Samael are pretty good i think 🙂
For "gothic black metal" id include things like kekt arahk, though i usually call it "romantic" black metal. I know im biased but i cant get enough of kekt arahk
I got confused at 11:28 ;-( Great video! But I skipped some parts....
I have very similar taste thx for vid, never heard of some of this genres ;D
Dude, there are only TWO Black Metal subgenres: Trve Kvlt and Poser Crap. Having said that, congrats for your excelent taste. Blackgaze is the Trvest Shit.
new farvann and oh what a great video
Progressive BM is like Enslaved, Emperor (The 4th album), the Ihsahn solo career, Solefald, Khonsu or Morgul.
Armospheric black metal is lot like a snow, white and interesting for first 15 minutes
lol at NSBM in B-tier
I get it, the sound can be super ambiguous and sound like anything. That's why the genre can only be judged by the lyrics and obviously they have to rank in F-tier
Then you have to rank everything by the lyrics and 80% of it goes in F tier.
@@Squant exactly
The only Avant-garde black metal band I listen to is Sigh, and they fucking rule
Farvann, can you make the list of best bands from A and B for pioneers of BM ?
Depressive suicidal / melodic black metal are S tier in my book
Where would you rate Hellenic Black Metal? I know that comprises only a handful of bands but that is its own sound
Like Rotting Christ?
Yeah, Rotting Christ, Varathron, Necromantia, Nergal, etc@@nicola6323
Try the one man band Lord Agheros
Respect your opinion but I love Atmospheric Black Metal, Black Doom and DSBM.
Symphonic Black Metal: C

Progressive Black Metal: B-
DSBM: B-?

Black/Doom Metal: A-
First Wave Black Metal: B+
Second Wave Black Metal: S

Industrial Black Metal: B
What's not on the list in that video that I'm gonna rank.
Christian Black (a.k.a. Unblack) Metal: C (Religious me back then would've ranked that S tier. LOL.)
RABM: C
NSBM maybe have great bands but because of the political aspect it is for me a no go. I dont want to support this type of thinking!
Love NSBM🤘🖤🔥
Huh...i figured youd be a fan of raw black metal, weird man still F tier is pretty harsh but hey at least you put industrial black metal as one of your favorites.
😂
Can someone recommend some pagan black metal thanks
Cruachan, Moonsorrow, Falkenbach, Winterfylleth.
@@Zagradotryad thanks 🤘🤘
What he is saying: Blackgaze
What youtube subtitles say: *Black gays*
"I made the list, but that was last week" tru words, tru words..
I can't grow out of dsbm, my weights grow heavier with time.
In my wasted existence, 😂
🤘💀🔪
Kein Stress!❤🤘🍻
i have to say, Grima's Frostbitten is fucking good atmospheric black metal
it's very cold and the artwork is so awesome as well
i used to think i loved atmospheric black metal until everything started to sound the same, which was boring, until i came across Frostbitten
RABM is so despised it didn't even get mentioned in the tier list
Progressive black metal = definitely Dark Fortress (starting at Eidolon/Ylem at least)
What's that symphonic black metal band that you mentioned besides Anorexia Nervosa?
Pantheion
I have herd of Viking-Metal as a subgenre of Black, Death and Power Metal...
