Yeah no worries we all just wanted to point out the impact Summoning have on an entire subgenre. I dont know what subgenre i love the most , preety much everything has something to enjoy. i could go from satanic warmaster to mesarthim or moonlight sorcery and enjoy equally. Lately am stuck with stormkeep's galdrum and the classic vittra from naglfar.

@@HandtuchAufDerLiegeImUrlaub I would put Caladan Brood, Firienholt and Can Bardd in the Epic Black Metal subgenre. All of which I like a lot. These are all medieval-sounding and therefore quite "folky", and also atmospheric.
Then you've got bands like Drengskapur, should they be put in the Atmospheric BM pile? If so, there is a huge difference between them and Eldamar, for instance.

Melodic Black Metal is S Tier 100% Dissection alone carries that torch, Vinterland, Dawn, just so many bands from 93 - 97 that made Melo Black the best genre of Black metal imo. Then you had Abigor, Blut Aus Nord, Gehenna, Keep of Kalessin, Lord Belial moving in with the Atmospheric/Melodic era, which was INCREDIBLE.
For me S tiers are, 2nd Wave 88-93 ( Morbid, Bathory, Darkthrone)
Melodic Black 93 - 97 (Dissection, Vinterland, Keep of Kalessin, Windir)
Atmospheric Black 93 - 97 (Abigor, Burzum, Blut Aus Nord, Ancient Wisdom)

Pretty damn good list all around! I do admit that I'd probably be tempted to go all the way to an S tier with avant garde black metal, but that's just my oddball sensibilities talking. Like hell, my favorite album of all time is Mr Bungle's Disco Volante, that should say a lot about my tastes in challenging music, hahaha!
I'd probably bump industrial black metal up to a C personally, partly because industrial was my big love before I discovered black metal, partly because the really good standout albums (like Dodheimsgard's 666 International, or Aborym's With No Human Intervention) are REALLY fucking good, but the genre as a whole is hit or miss.
I don't even know what I'd do with symphonic black metal or progressive black metal, because it all comes down to the quality of the black metal part. Early Limbonic Art albums, Borknagar's The Olden Domain, or Emperor's last couple of albums would score high marks because while the former is very symphony heavy, and the latter are very polished and proggy, they still kick ass and carry the black metal feel. On the flipside, stuff like later Dimmu Borgir or later Enslaved are albums I love on their own merits but come on, they barely qualify as black metal in the least.
Most importantly, 2nd wave black metal is absolutely S tier, and the only way I'd change that would be if any other genre were S rank, then I'd say you need an S+ for 2nd wave! LOL

I think Akerocke falls into the Progressive Black Metal category. For Second Wave Black Metal I also have to name drop Setherial, worth checking out. With a band like Mysticum out there, I am surprised why you would hate on industrial black metal, In the Streams of Inferno is a great album.

Borgne is a brilliant black industrial band.
So is Ufferndaith but they/he has only released one EP and that was back in 2020. He plays guitar in some indie rock band now which takes up most his music time.

Longtime fan, first time commenter. List made me think of one of the few US-BM bands I like because I've long struggled to give it a subgenre label, mixing raw, thrash, sometimes even hints of melodic and lyrical themes of DSBM here and there. Would love your opinion on the band Saidan if by some satanic boon you read this, especially the songs I am the Witch, She's Buried Under the Cherry Blossoms, Girl Hell 1999, or Shrine of the Black Sword.

It has folk elements with the banjo but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it folk black metal
    Still traditional black metal haha
And yes Viking metal is a black metal subgenre I’m not sure if these bands count but I would say bands that are Viking metal are bands like Falkenbach, King of Asgard, Helheim, ect
Btw if you like melodic black metal you should really check out Evil Summons Evil by Deviser, such a good album

(Enslaved, Windir, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Satangoat/Сатанакозёл, Spectral Wound, Kampfar, Tsaver)
A: Atmospheric and modern second wave
(Summoning, Falkenbach, Elderwind, Ellende, Eldamar, None, Evilfeast, Wynterfylleth, Batushka)
    B: Ambient and blackgaze
    (Lustre, Germ, Alcest)
C: Death-black, pagan-metal (worse than folk-black, yes), third wave BM/modern interpretation of BM.
Haven't listened to real second wave, principally 😂

    Hello!
I'm in trouble, because I've loved the black metal music and the atmosphere since I was a teenager, but I'm in trouble with the lyrics.
I am neither a Satanist (not even a LaVey type) nor a racist, in fact I would be a helpful, empathetic, calm personality (e.g. I never drink alcohol). Obviously, these topics do not apply to all black metal bands, but they are in the majority. For example, a Carpathian Forest or Gorgoroth is not really compatible with my world, but I still love it. How about it? :)
