How I Overcame Crippling Anxiety about My Grades

  • Stress and anxiety in school is normal, but the way we choose to deal with it can change everything. I struggled for a long time with anxious thought in med school. I had low confidence in my abilities and saw everything I did as a failure or mistake. If we let it run wild, our mental health can literally consume our mind and make it impossible to stay focused. But with the help of my mentors, peers, and the internet (dr. google), I was able to take a transformative journey to tackle stress and anxiety from my student life. Let's talk about some tips and tools we can use to get ourselves out of that rut. Mental health is king! Spread the word, let's normalize it.

    Sum up
    I. Understanding your anxiety
    II. Eliminate your anxiety
    - distract yourself ❌
    - avoid it ❌
    - fight it ❌
    >> be grateful to yourself ✅
    III. Solution
    1. Remember that every reaction to anxiety is a choice
    2. Chose gratitude

Ancient Stoicism Philosophy is what helped me overcome my Anxiety, fear, control of emotions and many more. I am still working on it. Virtue is not about perfection. One step at a time.

It has taken me 60 years to discover this but I frame it a little different. I have suffered from depression off and on for years. After the pandemic hit I decided I needed more help and signed up with a therapist who specializes in trauma. She taught me techniques to sit with uncomfortable feelings and realize they are not going to consume me. I realized most of my depression and anxiety was caused by avoiding certain feelings and thoughts. Feelings and thoughts pass quicker then I expected when I embraced them. I’ve been able to navigate through some life events that would have devastated me in the past without medication and even on my own (not in therapy). I didn’t get to what you call the gratitude part until after I was able to successfully not freak out from avoiding the feelings for a while. Now I call the gratitude part my sweet spot because it has made me enjoy the different stages of life so much better. I’m glad you discovered this much earlier in life and are spreading the word.
I enjoy the channel a lot. I found it because of going back to school as a senior. I’m always looking for ways to help work full time and study.

Avoiding uncomfortable feelings, that resonates a lot with me and coincidentally my first therapist told me that I had to deal with that, I used to avoid going places and meeting people just because leave my house was too hard. Now I kind of force myself because I know that when I get to the place I'm going to enjoy it. Good luck with your studies.

spent a minute crying once you talked about that perspective shift. I have felt so overwhelmed for so long and most of that is down to exam stress and grades and everything that comes with it. I want to continue to be a high achieving person but I know I'll need the correct mechanisms along the way. Thank you

Man, i just want to say thank you. Since this year started, I havent got very good grades like I Used to, and because of that I was really struggling with anxiety, the fear of failing in life even tho my father sacrificed a lot to provide everything for me. My older brother graduated hs last year and he's now in college and doing great, whilst me, who was being considered as the better student by our parents, is struggling now with grades just in high school. This really broke me down, I was overthinking all the time about how I could end up and disappoint the people I love. This video really helped me, Thanks.

You got this at your own pace, rookie.
Forcing to go faster will not only burn yourself out but also make you more upset and unhealthy.
Your progress is more important than the timing of it all so always focus on how far you've come. I am proud of you for making it this far!

I’m currently in my first semester of nursing in college, and I’ve been very anxious and stressed out. I haven’t even had any assignments, tests, or exams yet but I always have anxious thoughts. I am an extreme over-thinker and I overthink almost anything. I always worry if I’m capable of doing well and if I’ll still have time to do the things I enjoy. My family has always been supportive of my decisions so I already have little to no pressure from them. I’m very glad that I found this video during this time. I will definitely try your solutions to eliminate my stress and anxiety, thank you.

This helps a lot, I've been dealing with heightened anxiety since a bit more than a year, big changes, finished highschool, drivers exam, passed med entrance exam so I'm now in medschool and am on my 2nd week now. But all of these experiences seemed to be just filled with anxiety and I remember little of it being a nice journey. Even now in just the beginning of uni, I felt so anxious because of the whole new social setting, so much information.
All in all I forgot to be grateful this whole year for all that I have accomplished and that the place I'm at now is exactly where I need to be and enjoy, not just get lost in the future / not be grateful for where I am.
Thank you for the insight about this problem which affects so many 🙏

Came back to watch this video because I have been feeling some anxiety this start of master's program. I feel behind cause I have been to college in 2 years and a ton of the math I don't remember. I already understand I listen to that voice that anxious and recognize it. I remind myself that I am not the person I was before. I also use stoic philosophy to remind myself to control what can control. The future is something I can't control so don't get anxious about it.

Thank you Matty for sharing your experience. I went to see my psychologist at school to help me eliminate anxiety because the pressure was so overwhelmed too handle and I cracked. You are right we cannot eliminate the anxiety, we have to work with it. Here are some tips that my psychologist was giving me : 1) take at least 5 min to breathe on daily basis. 2) Doing activity/sports or simply take a walk for 1hr a day. Meditation also helps. And in my opinion having animals companion does helps. Regardless you failed or succeeded, they still love you the same. I have my two cats and they have been very therapeutic for me.

Thank you for opening up about your experience with us. It must have been heavy to carry. I am also an overthinker and when anxiety strikes it can be hard to see past logical reasoning. Tonight I was worried because I felt like I was falling behind. We have about a month left before our board exams and I don’t know how I’m going to fit every subject. After watching this, it gave me a new perspective and helped me to calm down. To you who’s reading this, your feelings are valid and you’re not alone. It isn’t going to be like this forever. I’ve been struggling for years (I’m in University) with this and bcos of covid and myself (for avoiding and distracting myself) and it’s is getting worse. This school year, 3rd time repeating, I can’t even study bcos I feel so anxious every time I think about school. It’s like my heart is in pain so I avoid studying, thinking etc. I’ll probably need to retake the year again since I didn’t study but I’m also hopeful that this will change and get better. Esp since I used to get good grades, my parents are going to kill me.

That freaks me out, i woke up this morning & then I open my books, but then i sleeped again till now just because i couldn't carry all of this anxiety in my mind, the voices that called me with worst things ever & made me see nightmares.
But I just decided to get up, move my body, wash my face, do some grounding exercises (u can find those in utube they really help) & then I searched for this video, this is actually helpful, I though about all of the efforts I put in while this semester & even in these 4 days, sometimes i really need to someone come & pull me out of my mind, thanks for making this video💕

you are certainly not alone. it's been a while so if you received your results, this comment is proof that you tried your best. you're right that there is always another chance to retry/start new if things don't go quite as well as you'd hoped.
i feel that way too about a bio exam i did last week, i'm sure i bombed the test after mulling over certain questions but ultimately i don't decide my results so...there's that i guess. if things do go south i can always choose other routes. it's also funny because i thought i was going to do well based on previous scores.
it can be frustrating and scary to feel like you didn't do as well as you would've liked to, but i think that's just about what everyone experiences.
i'm sure you did great, now that it's over you can always start fresh into a new chapter of your life. hope things go great for you, and if you ever feel like this again just remember to give yourself some grace and come back to this video :)

My anxiety is like a depressed child with no filter or inhibitions. Sometimes just have to accept that it’s gonna make a fuss and you just have to grow accustomed to it, validate that it’s real for you but you don’t have to let it run your life. That just because it’s narrowing its focus to the worst possible outcome, doesn’t mean you have to. And like it or not, it is almost never right about everything. My anxiety has zero credibility. And should never be taken absolutely seriously. (Except for actual real life, could seriously kill my meatsuit threats) I let myself feel, freak out if I have to, for a while and then I try to actually figure it out. What is a real threat? How and why? And what isn’t? Often the real threat ends up being solvable.

9:03 I just finished high school, and I couldn't wait for it, it was very difficult, but I entered medical school, I'm under a lot of stress just because I'm at the beginning, the problems are just beginning, I can't even persuade myself to start, because it's so hard right now that it's unimaginably difficult to finish it.

I applied to a lot of colleges near him but i have to wait before they give me their admission letter. It just sucks I'm on ldr with him and I was hoping to go to the same college or attend college at the same state as him. All i can do right now is wait and it's pretty anxious

The only problem on the solution is "don't be impulsive", because I have Adhd, so... pretty hard, I got some meds ( not totally confirmed yet that I need them or have adhd) and they work :)
But without them, study is like putting your hand and working with the most disgusting thing u can imagine (my body just says no... ah and for me is a root body I don't want to stick my hand to it, the feeling of studing is the same as touching a dead rotten body...)
All the rest of the video is related and... what I do to stop my anxiety, hmm, I do basic whelfare (play games, clean the house, SPECIALLY BATH TIME, study and try to sleeep correctly) and sometimes I just embrace being anxious and sad for 30minutes until I get back to myself
Thank you for the video, I'll try your strategy ( I used it before, when I was studing hard to enter college, but somehow it lost itself and I didn't feel like studying enough anymore (because other med vet students seeems to study their life out))
So yeah... thank you very much ;)

Hi, I have a question. What if anxiety controls someone, like it gets so worse that it becomes a cycle? Like anxiety can last for months, or even a year. Sorry I can't explain what happens when I go through anxiety. I just can't put it to words. Can you please make a video or give tips ? Thanks

I'ma be honest it really depends on the kind of anxiety I have. If it's out of an irrational fear, like that I'ma die outta no where or bc I feel sick, a distraction works very well. When it comes to school things, yeah I just kinda sit with it, I'm the kind of person to be like "fuck I'm so screwed this is so hard" or "I can't do it anymore" and do it anyway. Even at the gym my friend makes fun of me bc I'm like "I CAN'T DO IT ANYMORE" and do it anyway, and she like "but you just did it!" Lmao. I'ma complainer but get it done.

I have maths exam in a week. My normal grades without anxiety is As however as soon as i think about how ill do compare myself to others and just get constant pressure from teachers and parents I just break down mentally especially form where I came from mental health is dismissed and not taken seriously. I try to cheer up and know that I will pass but anxiety is just stronger which makes me have lower grades than expected. I can’t even sleep or eat and I feel like I’m in a hole. And this video did not help any suggestions?
