Rather than stopping doing shit you hate, it sometimes helps to find interest in some of the shit you hate. Things that would benefit you. If you learn to get it done in one and forget about it, rather than drag it out, you have a won. Of course, if it continues to drain your time, focus and energy, then cut that shit out. Honestly, sometimes a person fails because they keep getting involved in the wrong things.

My take of summarizing this video.
    "FOCUS NOT TIME"
•Spend time studying while you have the most focus where in motivation is the highest
    Early Mornings!!
    "BEDTIME NOT ALARM"
•Sleep early to have motivation tomorrow early morning, Mornings is kind of soothing where people is not awake yet and there's no set of distractions
    "SET DEADLINES"
•Use Parkinson's law- where you have to set deadlines on yourself where you need to focus more rather than procrastinating (early deadlines makes you more dedicated into finishing your job)
    "Subtract not add"
•Delete things that is time consuming and not benefiting your life one example of that is social media

My suggestion would be to switch to doing things you hate less!
Example: Ideally I would just not work and do my own thing all the time, but I need money. I used to work at a coffee shop, which I absolutely hated as an extreme introvert and it felt like it was totally destroying my soul. So instead I started looking for jobs that had nothing to do with customer service. I ended up finding a job that I still wasn't deeply satisfied with in the long run, but it had nothing to do with customer service and I could just do my own thing without feeling totally drained by the end. So, now I still don't get super excited to go to work, but it's way less soul destroying than the first few jobs I tried.
Hopefully this helps. Good luck homies 🙏

As an honors student working 2 jobs, one thing that helps me get out of bed is to wake up a little earlier and do one thing I enjoy. This could be taking a walk to grab a nice coffee or playing a quick 30 minutes of a video game. I was so used to mornings being dedicated to getting ready for something I didn’t enjoy doing, when I woke up with time to do something I enjoyed it felt less like a chore. And as long as I get 7-8 hours of sleep, I feel great.
Update: Just graduated Summa Cum Laude! As a working woman in my field, I still do this. It’s a really useful tool, got me through college when at one point I was working 3 jobs.

Absolutely brilliant advice. Together with what you explained, I personally was constantly quite under the weather because it felt like my whole morning (which didn’t feel long, because I was always in a hurry) is dedicated to getting ready for another duty I have. So waking up a little earlier to do something joyful not only made me feel better mentally, but also gave me the time to actually awaken properly physically. And to feel as if I lived my life a little before going on a duty instead of just always being in rush as I used to. So it doesn’t feel like my day to day life consists of going to and back from work only.

  • @TheDepthOfHatred
    @TheDepthOfHatred 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1342

From my POV, setting a strict schedule is dangerous, because most people will set it too strict and burn out after a couple of days/weeks.
I believe that wasting some time here and there is a part of life, you shouldnt plan every hour of your day.
I do like the reflection that you implemented into your video. We all have stuff in our days, that we could easily cut out to make some time for the important things.

    • @soldierofpeace
      @soldierofpeace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

Apparently, you'd better learn about yourself and be honest where you are at, since it sounds like you're putting unreaslitic expectation on yourself. Having a "strict" schedule meaning based on your honest abilities. Looks like it is coming down to the level where you know yourself through a process of trial and error. The author of the video has emphasised what worked for him and how he was able to get there, and for sure after a while it will change, since we keep changing either up or down and it's our responsibility to find it out. All these videos are just templates.

What I like to do especially as someone with ADHD is sort my to do list into "work musts", "work bonuses", "personal musts" and "personal bonuses". The work musts are the things I absolutely have to do that day, but if I have wanes in motivation and concentration and hit a wall trying to do those things, I can move onto a "personal must", something like cleaning the cat tray, taking the bins out, calling to make an appointment etc. "Work bonuses" and "personal bonuses" are things that make me feel great if I get them done but aren't essential to do, at least not that day. Often they're more enjoyable and help to break up monotonous days.

**HOW I ROUTINELY STUDY WITH A FULL TIME JOB WHEN I’M TIRED**
    1. Schedule focus, not time:
    - break up your day by focus and tackle the most intense work when your focus is highest and then allow the natural progression of your energy throughout the day → determine how to work optimally and efficiently and reduce burning out.
    2. Set a bed time, not a wake up time:
    - instead of setting an alarm in the morning or having a scheduled wake-up time, set a strict bedtime so your body naturally wakes up.
    3. Set a strict deadline:
    - time pressure was always the main determinant for taking action.
    - give yourself rewards for finishing.
    - break down big assignments into smaller bite-sized pieces to reduce how challenging it was.
    4. Create time from cutting out the pointless stuff.

This depends a lot on what you are studying too. This is easier to implement in mcat than in engineering for example. In engineering there are times when a complete undivided bulk period of time is needed along with breaks to gather up new approach to solving a hard problem. Same goes for math. This makes it harder to move things around.

I am starting to adopt your concept of "focus" and it makes sense on my study habit. I am a person that gets easily distracted by my own thoughts and at the same time the thoughts that I get in my studies are on and off. So with your concept on focus I started to make a timer on my "focus time". Whenever my mind start to focus on my study I hit the countdown button and when my mind drifts off I hit the pause button. With this I start to keep a "real" track with the time I really spend on focusing and not just the time I spend studying.

If you ensure that you've got an even multiple of 1.5 hours, like 7.5 hours rather than 7 hours, you're more likely to be at an appropriate stage to wake up well. Also, if you can have a light that shines in your face that gets gradually brighter as you make, that can help as well.
Normally peak focus will come a few hours after you wake up, but only if you properly wake up, if you spend most of the day waking up, you'll find that in the evening. You don't normally find that in the evening unless something is going wrong as that's not how the circadian rhythm works. Regardless of when you naturally want to be awake, the focus time is pretty much always roughly the same time with respect to getting up. If it's any other time, then it's worth looking at your circadian rhythm to see if something is going wrong. A bit of stress at the end of the day, and not enough early on, can do that to a person.

I'm a chronic procrastinator and an underachiever, Not living up to my own expectations made me suicidal and stop caring about my life completely. I find it so, so so so so difficult to study, it's painful. I'm horribly slow and never learn things well enough. I struggle with college alone and couldn't even imagine myself doing more than just college. Everyone, and I mean everyone around me is so much more succesful than me that it makes me ashamed about myself. When I thought something must be wrong with my brain, I decided to go to the psychiatrist and got diagnosed with bipolar disorder and adhd. I still can't solve why I just can't make it, even when I make an effort much bigger than my mates, I still grades worse than them, and I mean enclosing myself studying like crazy and still ending up being the worst one in the class, it's really disheartening. I really wish I could fix this, I want to be like you.

If you would like any advice, I would personally say spend as much time as possible with other people, and doing things you like. When you need to do things you don't like, do these together with people you do like. And I frequently make exhaustive lists of what I do and don't want out of my life, I find these clear my head and give me the motivation to keep going when I am personally overwhelmed.

The shift in perspective to "focus" management is really helpful, thanks! Working as an editor I have some very mentally intensive things to process, but also a lot of small annoying admin work. My usual philosophy was getting admin stuff done first to get it "out of the way," but I've been finding actually editing chapters exhausting the more work I get. Doing the mentally intensive editing FIRST, then the admin work when my focus is low, seems like it should really improve my general workflow.

using time as focus and non-focus hours is really worth it.. I have thought about it in the past but I could not relate it in a way that would actually help me.. now that I now I can have focus hours instead of study hours.. or coding hours..
I can divide my time mainly in two categories .. and that would also take the pressure off of from performing ... i.e. within 1 hour I must complete 1 coding question.. (this path leads to disappointment often)... now I can enjoy the time just with focus..

I really really appreciate flipping the schedule to prioritizing focus rather than time. 🙏 this is a game changer for me. I’m exhausted by the many science influencers who preach optimal times in the day to do deep focused work. These guys have no other interruptions in their lives bc they either have wives who shield them from everything or they’re single. They base their schedules on data collected from other men in the same scenarios. I’m a full time doctoral student, a full time single mom, and a full time income “figure outer”. My study focus blocks are dictated by two other full time jobs. That’s just not compatible with the schedules of dudes who have the leisure to work out and nap more hours of the day than they need to put in productive work.

The topic itself relatable. I've been in 'feeling tired after a working day' mode for more than two years now. Each day i wake up at 6 a.m., so as to get to the work which is in 40km from home, then 8 hours a day i work and then i spend again appr. 2 hours to commute home.Driving home with all the traffic jams and road rage really exhausts me.Apart from that, starting from September it gets darker and darker and the weather conditions with a coming winter gets worse each day so it becomes more difficult to drive car. At 8p.m. i'm at home and really can't do anything productive. At the same time i realize i have to study, get some experience on programming and take some courses all just to become a better specialist and find a new job, but aforementioned reasons wear me off physically and emotionally.i feel like i am burnt out and need to break this 'tiredness cycle'. If only it was that easy

I’ve learned to give myself some grace when modifying my schedule. Even waking up just 30 min earlier can be quite uncomfortable so if I want the habit to stick I give myself time. Rather than going from 7:30 to 5:30 in one day I’d give myself at least a week for my circadian rhythm to taper down. 15-30 min earlier a day seems to be small enough to not ruin my morning due to grogginess. Also like he said, going to be earlier also helps a lot too.

Everyone’s different, but that’s not the case for me. I’m in bed by 10 or 11, don’t usually see people after 7, and I have a super active social life. I tend to get involved in academic, athletic, or hobby-focused groups that meet on campus during the day, and I make time to get lunch with friends, go shopping together, etc. I don’t feel safe getting around at night anyway because I’m female and don’t have a car, so I’ve been forced I to this lifestyle… but it can be done, even for extroverted people! Probably won’t work for you if you’re into nightlife and parties tho

I've had irregular sleep my entire life, even as a baby, and it didn't exactly help that I always kept myself busy so my focus comes when I need it to come--usually when there's a deadline lol. But how do you know you've got great focus at that time of the day?

I suffer the same- but i always go to bed at the same time and make myself get up at the same time… it makes my body and mind slow down even if i don’t get actual Zzz.
Also give yourself small deadlines… like if you have a research paper due in two weeks… break it down to. :read material in 2 days. Take notes in 2 days: write outline in 1 day: break 1 day. Write first draft 2 days. Give to someone to review your points 1 day. Write 2nd draft 2 days. Break 1 day. Rewrite/proof 1 day. Turn in last day

That's for you to experiment and figure out. Everybody is different and you wont know when you focus is high until you try.

You can use a thermometer. Usually your best time to study will be when your body temperature is higher. Take your temperature hourly for a few weekends and you should see that there's a time when you're at your peak and when you're at your lowest. Chances are that when your body temperature is higher is when you're also more energized and focused.
This should also help a bit in determining when to go to bed as the lower your body temperature is when you hit bed, the more likely you are to just fall asleep rather than lying there unproductively.

@@zahubshahid7944 Yes, but if you track your body temperature for a few days, the time of the day when the body temperature peaks is usually going to be about when the brain is the widest awake it's going to get. You can shift it around by changing your eating, sleep, light and exercise schedules, but natural is usually best.

I agree on the focus points and structure my days the same way. From what little I read about neuroscience, they also seem to suggest this. One thing I do wonder, though, is if there is such thing as "free focus", i.e., if when I'm really motivated to do something, I can do it without "losing battery". My preliminary observations on myself indicate that, no, even if I really feel like doing something (e.g., read a chapter on an interesting textbook at the weekend), it does drain my battery. And if I do that in the evening, when my battery is already depleted, I run it into minus, and only notice it the next morning, when it's not recharged to 100% anymore.
    What's your thoughts on this?
