    If you fill the watch you basically compansate the watch for depth. I'm a Subsea Hydraulic engineer and it's common practice to fill all air voids in our subsea vehicles to basically equalise the pressure from outside to in. Use something called a 'compansator'. Means we don't need to build a case that has to suvive the pressure of depth due to the pressure been equal and oppisite :) Need all the air out however. Need to do this mod myself haha.

      @@WatchChris could be interesting for sure! But I do think this technique pairs best for the sub $100 quartz watches. Most Swiss quartz divers already have plenty of water resistance. But taking a cheepie with below-average WR to dive capable WR, that my friend is cool!

  • @MichaelAChang
    @MichaelAChang 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There's really no need to have it compression tested; it's filled with oil which is incompressible, and that tiny air bubble isn't going to make that much of a difference.

  • @chriswilliams1096
    @chriswilliams1096 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could put the watch in a small vacuum chamber to suck out the bubbles from the oil.
    The cheapest way might be to buy a fishing pellet pump (used for soaking expander pellets used as fishing bait). I have not tried this myself (well, not on watches) but it works well on fishing pellets.

    The watch will continue to work...for a while but this mod will reduce the longevity of the stepper motor because you have created extra drag on the hands. Also check the accuracy of the watch which now may also be affected by the drag.

      I totally agree with you on the extra drag placed on the motor from the hands running in the thick oil. I also wonder if leaving the air bubble will compromise the water pressure test as the air compresses but oil does not? But neat test anyhow. Thank you

      In low temperature the oil will become sticky and increase the resistance for the movement. In high temperature it will expand and pop out the crystal. Oil filled watches must be specially designed for thoses effects and therefore are very expensive.

    I can understand how filling watch with oil increases depth it's made neutral by removing the air , BUT I dont understand how a battery operated watch dont short out from the liquid or how the movement continues working and keeping time pushing all the oil around or how the paint dont wear off the face, never heard of this but Im curious how it works after months or years or if its a one dive deal or not, the whole thing reminds me of the movie "THE ABYSS" when the guy breathed liquid oxygen which worked real good on the movie but I wouldnt try that either.

    I did this and the second hand did not like the bubble, which I left in my mistake. Really, to me it looks much better without the bubble. I tried olive oil on one watch and the white dial had a yellow/green tinge. In the Casio I used baby oil. Silicone would probably have been better. @@brandonar868 DOT 5 brake fluid (not to be confused with DOT 5.1) is fundamentally different than the rest of the DOT fluid range in that it is silicone based brake fluid.
      It was originally introduced to give a higher boiling temperature over glycol-based DOT 4 brake fluid. Purple in colour and sometimes referred to as 'synthetic brake fluid', DOT 5 is not compatible with any of the glycol-ether based DOT fluids that we've been focusing our attention on so far.
      Although tests have been carried out by the various hydraulic mountain bike brake manufacturers, DOT 5 has so far not proven itself to be a better alternative to glycol-ether based fluids used in hydraulic mountain bike brakes today.
      It is also more compressible than the other DOT brake fluids which can lead to a sluggish or spongy brake lever (or pedal) feel, and therefore requires special design considerations when used in brake systems.

    Folks, I would say this is not legit. Maybe a way to get us to buy more watches. I have done 3 since yesterday. Today I got silicone oil and did a Skmei watch that is similar to a Casio, camo and a big dial digital. Got a nice bubble. When I pressed the light button it worked, but I noticed the watches "beeping" no longer worked. It wasn't beeping. I pressed the other buttons, then the display freaked out and looked like the digits on the terminator's arm control panel, then all the buttons stopped working and the display is stuck on in the alarm mode. Cannot change it. Then, as if ruining 2 watches wasn't enough, I figured I'd try a cheap analog "Brooklyn" watch company, with a swiss Rhonda movement. I filled it with the oil, put it together, and the seconds hand can't move in the oil. Maybe it's too thick for the power of the movement. I removed the case back again and drained the oil. (there is no cleaning out the oil, if you use soap and water you kill it of course) I let it drain as much as possible, and the seconds hand still doesn't tick but it just agitates in place, stuttering forward and backward but not going forward. That's 3 watches down. I don't own a watch shop, but I'm going to have to buy one if I' to continue trying this. I would say don't do it. Once you start pressing buttons you're requiring current to move and the oil is non conductive, so it cannot transmit electric signal. So, if the battery and the contacts are all soaked in oil, how's the current supposed to get through to the other side?

      @@WatchChris So the secret is the weight, which not 1 youtuber mentioned. Not 1. "This is a 2oz bottle of Team Associated silicone shock oil used with oil filled shocks. Team Associated shock oil is made from 100% pure silicone oil and will not thin out in hot weather or thicken up in cold weather. The higher the weight number of the oil, the thicker the oil is.
