I loved this video. You are clearly knowledgeable when it comes to navigating the tech landscape but what I like best about this video is that you admit when you haven't put in enough research to make you knowledgeable on a certain topic. It lets the audience know that this isn't the end-all-be-all of the situation and there could be gaps in the information presented and that is fine. We're not looking for perfection, we're looking for honesty and you deliver that. Thank you.
Hey Josh! Thank you so much for the kind words. Reading comments like this really makes all the hard work worthwhile! And I'm glad you picked up on the fact that I don't try to pretend to know everything. It would be foolish of me to do so. I'm still learning, and I learn a lot from the comment sections, listening to people who actually use these devices in many ways that I will never do. Looking forward to making more videos and hope you enjoy them. Have a great rest of the weekend!
I wanted to ask about docking stations. If you use one - Aren't you worried about overcharging the battery/shortening its life? Since it's charging constantly. Or about connecting your phone to an external monitor (on daily basis). I found no workaround for this issue saldy and want to use an external monitor that has OLED touchscreen. Couldn't find anything that had a battery (monitors with batteries), OLED and a price that is not something bad completely. I was thinking about Magedok 13,3 fullhd OLED touchscreen. Close enough to Asus zenscreen OLED 13,3 (can't get the later in my country for a long time from now still). I have some questions, maybe you can help. 1. Firstly, Does plugging the power source (to the monitor) stop phone battery drainage? Does it even slow it? I watched reviews, but all they say is that plugging the monitor I can just boost the brightness. So I'm worried it would still consume my phone's battery even when I connect my monitor to energy source (using it's charger). 2. Secondly, if instead the phone is ALSO CHARGED when monitor uses its own charger - Is there any way for me to stop charging my phone when it's not needed? Having the phone charging constantly is very destructive for the battery in smartphones (I had one exploding in the past from being charged too often). 3. If it's not possible to stop charging the phone (when monitor is charging with its own charger) - Can I disconnect the charger from monitor and run the monitor using my phone only (with my phone's battery as the only energy source)? Then I could simply drain the battery to the moment where charging is okay once more (and connect monitor to its charger again). 4. Here I'm worried that 4k OLED could have a bigger energy consumption and won't run with my phone without plugging the monitor into its charger, as I'm interested in either their fullhd or 4k option (I use it pretty close to my face and do very detilaed work so even with small screen it still matters to me). To make your task easier - My phone is Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. It has battery 4500 mAh Cheers
While there may be less RAM on older iPads, my 20 year old Gateway tablet PC supports multi-window and dual displays...with 2GB RAM. The hardware of let's say...a 2018 iPad pro is still comparable to an 11th gen mobile core i5. Apple is just being greedy at this point, and the ONLY reason for them to exclude older hardware is PROFIT.
@@AlexGTech Sorry about the capital letters...I got caught up in the moment. Anyway, a 2018 iPad pro still beats my 11th gen core i5, so I stand by what I said, and perhaps if people are vocal enough about Apple's latest moves to limit their hardware, Apple may cooperate.
I honestly think they limited it because of their "perfectionist" mindset, after the trainwreck that was the iphone 4s on both iOS 8 and 9 they kinda changed how they do things, now they wanna make sure you not only have the headroom to make what you want but a lot more as well, I was disappointed that the ipad 7 I have will not support stage manager, but after messing around using up to 3 apps at the same time (the split screen and a floating one) I noticed the performance was somewhat strange, so my guess for the feature being locked on the m1 chip ipads only us because they will let us do a lot more than just multiple windows in the near future
@@Cez-ario The iPhone 4s only ended up having 512MB RAM and a dual core 1GHz CPU. Surely 6GB on a 2018 iPad is more than enough, and it has a CPU that beats my core i5. It WOULD be perfect on most older iPads, as long as they have at least 4GB RAM most likely. So, 2017 iPad Pro or later for that feature 🤷
What you guys fail to understand is that todays updates have consequences in the future. Yes today a 2018 iPad Pro could technically run everything iPadOS 16 offers. But Could a 2018 iPad Pro run all the features of lets say… iPadOS 19 in 3 years. There is a ton of extra processing power to provide us with OS updates for the maximum amount of years. If they use more of the processing power in each OS update, the total amount of OS updates possible would suffer the consequence. An easy way to understand this is if the iPad Pro when shipped only uses lets say 40% of it total processing capability. Lets stay each OS update cost the iPad to use 10 percent more processing. Then the iPad would have about 6 more OS updates left. Even if only 1 of these updates cost 11% of power then the total amount of updates would only be 5. This is not true numbers obviously but an idea based off of the same principle. Your 20 year old tablet can do multi window. Very nice. What can it do in these multiple windows with out lag? Can you render 4K content while on a factetime call? Can you stream in dolby atmos while you play call of duty at 120 FPS? Without lag? How many pixels is that screen pushing? Is it also doing all this on 5G? How bright can the screen get? Does it have a fan? How long can its battery endure this stress? I ask these questions to point out how much power is already in use by the iPad that we take for granted when we ask for more. Apple has given us remarkable technology in the last few years but it is not with out its limits. Your pc tablet doing multi window support is not the same and today’s choices effect tomorrow.
Alex, thank you for making this video. I've been a huge Apple person for many years but recently decided to switch over to Android by getting an S22+ and Tab S8+ and I gotta tell you I am impressed. My productivity is much better because my employer uses Windows exclusively with the android integration of Windows 11 there are some things I can do better. I'm in tech and still love my Apple stuff but I like what I'm experiencing so far with Samsung and Android.
I agree, Samsung really nailed it with the experience on their latest stuff. Not perfect (nothing is right?) but it’s much more useful for me. Glad you liked the video 😉
I bought the M1 iPad expecting that Apple might start supporting professional grade apps, then Samsung release a really competitive device and one that would fit my workflow better. I am a Software Engineer and the iPad can’t be used for anything more than a terminal to a computer that can build software solutions, even though it is using the same chip as those other Apple computers that can build. I would love to have any other OS on this device since it is some of the best hardware running the worst software, it is the equivalent of putting a jet engine on a car where you have all this power and no way to control it. Android is miles ahead on the software for professionals but 90% of the tablets are made with old hardware or the version of Android is a few versions behind, which is most likely capable of running professional apps but at the risk of no security updates. Google needs to have a showcase program that has examples of top tier Android devices and provide users details on what each device is best suited to tackle. While Apple needs to allow professionals much more freedom on the “Pro” devices.
Thank you!! Jeffrey, I love when what I consider to be the “real pros” comment. Because I know in my use case I’m not really qualified to try some workloads but I knew deep down that this device was failing it’s original promise. I don’t know what else Apple has on their roadmap that means they’re neglecting the iPad Pro. But it’s criminal, given the excellent hardware we have here. Have a great weekend!
Hi Jeffrey, that's quite interesting. I'm also in IT, and I tend to jump back & forth between Apple & Samsung. I'm back to Samsung now. Specifically, an S22 Ultra. Both have their pro's and cons. If I may please inquire, what is your workflow on android? How do you use your Tab S8+, please? Thanks much, -Laurence
Okay I’m just going to drop this here. He’s a software engr, I’m an architect and the iPad and MacBook do nothing for me. I wouldn’t even consider it for a minute because it would be a living hell getting through all the compatibility issues. - It’s as far away from cost efficient - As good as M1 “may be” it doesn’t support architectural programs. - Pre M1 MacBooks pro would heat up once I try to get any work done - architectural rendering would require the cheese grater max pro to even be viable as a work setup, meanwhile I can live off an Alienware full time without requiring and desktop. - expanding memory (ram or hdd) on apple hardware is simply not an option I must confess, the best way to waste your money as an architect is have the illusion that mac or iPads would do anything for you. If I walk into a meeting room with no Apple TV I cannot share my screen. Other devices would connect with a simple hdmi. Just my own angle. I watch apple content on TH-cam knowing I will never invest in anyone again, behind all the picture perfect marketing is no value and a big walled garden These are just the tip of the iceberg.
Thanks so much for watching and apologies for the “rushed” feel to it. No background music, no special effects 😂 I had to get this out quickly. Looking forward to seeing how this develops but wonder what you think of iPadOS 16 so far and whether it is better than Samsung Dex for example? Let me know down here in the comments 👇
This kind of video i wanted to see to prove myself i did'nt made a mistake buying the Tab S8plus I own it for like 2 months now and i'm very glad that i changed to Samsung... They are really pushing it to be the best company in the world ... They succeed at it.
2:24. First video I see on your channel, but this sentence alone is enough to make me subscribe. It’s a pretty simple idea actually; what is the thing that makes an iPad (let’s just consider the Pro versions because they are actually comparable to McBooks while the Air is not) a machine that people want and buy? The answer is actually 3 things. 1: Pencil. 2: portability and the possibility to buy one with a SIM card for extra self-sufficiency while on the go. 3: 120hz display. Now, if you do need these 3 aspects, you are probably gonna choose an iPad. But how much is it? I’m Italian, so I’ll just use the European price tags: 1.219€ for the iPad, 135€ for the Pencil and 399€ for the keyboard. This amounts to 1.753€. Even the newest McBook Air is 200€ cheaper (it’s 1.500€ with M2 processor). Now I need someone to explain to me how would an iPad that costs as much as a McBook Pro kill the McBook lineup, if it got a real OS that makes use of it’s power and answers the demand most users have. The reality is, people who need a pencil would buy an iPad and everybody else would buy a McBook. I’ve been commenting a lot of videos about this matter, since the keynote; but this time I’m keeping it simple. An iPad Pro is not cheaper than a McBook, but it could do more if Apple cared about this device. The lack of competition has been slowing down the progress of iPad OS to basically none, but the S8 sped it up a little bit. I hope in the future we will get real improvements, because the list of features and things that are missing or not working as they should is too long to be discussed. Anyway, I’ll now enjoy the rest of the video, peace
First of all thank you so much for the kind words and for joining the channel 😊 and I totally agree, Apple have completely neglected the iPad and got very complacent. The competition aren’t stood still but there’s not enough right now, just Samsung as you mentioned really. I love my iPad as a tablet and got really excited last year when the M1 was put in it but right now, the more I think about it the more I realise I’ve been conned. The M1 inside the iPad makes no sense given the limitations we’ve had… Anyway, let’s hope they wake up and give this device the attention it deserves and delivers on the vision Steve Jobs himself had for it. Thanks again for the sub 👊🏼
Owning a 2018 ipad pro, This is what I have wanted since day one so I could use it as my daily driver and I am pissed off I would need to upgrade to M1 for this to work. The A12 chip is good enough for my workload right now and it is good enough for proper external display support
@@allstarkidXD The Galaxy Tab S5e has 4gb of ram and it's a relatively weak midrange tablet with Snapdragon 670 and yet it supports DeX with external monitor support. There is no excuses here, Apple just wants people to pay more money.
Glad you've highlighted how basic the windows resizing and placement is. I spotted that instantly on the keynote. Keep it up and looking forward to seeing how it changes over time. I'm not brave enough to install it!
I feel totally misled, it looked like we were getting this a year ago. Their promotional videos with external monitors didn't really give an accurate impression of what we were paying $1k+ for. I bought RAM that the iPad won't even fully use due to OS limits. We finally get a desktop-like mode now and it still feels worse than Dex. Not giving it to the earlier iPad Pro is also a crappy thing to do to their earliest adopter paying customers.
It will be great to understand how zoom functions with stage manager. It is annoying when iPad turns camera off when you multitask with previous builds but stage manager might solve this problem. Unfortunately there is not much video content on TH-cam. Would love to see some.
Hi Mustafa, I will test this more thoroughly. It does work but there are some things I’d like to test a bit more like using a monitor which already has a camera and speakers. Microsoft teams works well on Stage manager by the way…
You can move opened application between external and iPad, you just can’t drag. There’s a button that pops up in the middle of the opened application you wanna move.
Thanks for the refreshing and eye-opening review, Alex. You are indeed one of the few truth-tellers in the TH-cam space that I occupy on a regular basis. If your channel maintains this level of credibility and enlightenment, you will have yourself at least one lifetime subscriber. There are more and more reviewers summoning up the courage and beginning to delve deeper into Apple's continual and not-so-subtle money grab. I wish users would take off the blinkers and start to demand massive changes in Apple's attitude towards its customers, the majority of whom are smitten with the glitziness of their products, completely disregarding the shortfalls which accompamy each and every hardware and software upgrade. With their massive wealth and knowhow, Apple could provide their customers with the wet-dream they have longed for for years. When will buyers come to realise that they are not the first consideration of this company - it's their cash that is of real and material desire. Apple customrs are so invested in the eco-system and the accompanying hype, that they fail to notice themselves at the end of a thin tube, being drip-fed with just enough sustenance to keep them forever wishing and hoping for a miracle. I am an Apple user, as well as a Samsung owner, but I see Samsung as innovating in order to gain a greater share of the technology pie, while Apple has become fat and lazy, being quite smug about its ability to lord it over its loyal and often sychophantic users, whose only way out of the eco-systen is wholesale and expensive change, as well as wholesale attitude adjustment. I just find it impossible to believe that my iPad Pro will ever be made sufficiently well eqipped to draw me away from mu Tab S8 Ultra. We will never get a laptop replcement, if there is such a thing, from Apple as they have a conflict of interest in providing us with the perfect all-in-one tablet. And that conflict of interest is called M-a-c-B-o-o-k. It's as simple as that.
Thank you for the kind words Laurie. Judging by the comments here it feels like more people are waking up to the fact Apple have been very greedy recently and are ignoring customers to prioritise profit…
Nice one Alex. This is exactly the type of comparison that is needed. Not just some of the technical specs, but highlighting which is better for high quality output. I look forward to seeing how this goes.
I am so glad I replaced the harder to use and not play well with other OS iPad Pro with my tab S8 Ultra. I can actually be much more productive now, I don't even have to boot up my PC anymore. The Ultra out performs my Dell XPS 15 at the apps I use for work and for play. The iPad just couldn't cut it for me, I'm glad they are closing the gap because you kind of have to pick an ecosystem and stick with it to avoid frustration Very fair review.
You’ve made me rubber neck on the Tab S8 Ultra, I think it looks like an ideal size for DAWs and video editing on linear timelines! And Dex currently looks superior to Stage Manager, but unfortunately android hasn’t supported audio plugins / VSTs of any sort for years. When It does I may cheat on my iPad! 🤫
Haha definitely a great device but you nailed it on the head with the software. The apps are just not quite there yet. Much better than it used to be but I’m not aware of any DAWs or video editing apps that work well on it. As you said, the potential is there!
I have both and android makes more sense to me. Easy multitasking and easy file transfer. I have to use specific hard drive for ipad in order to recognize it unlike Android you can use any hard drive. For me Android you are the admin While apple you are the user. The only thing I like about Apple is battery. Overall fantastic video
So mad and disappointed that my air 4 from the end of 2020 doesn’t run stage manager! They’re excuse is that there is less ram but truth be told that should only limit the external display support… they could easily offer the feature with support for less apps 😑😒
The sad thing is that the lack of RAM compared to Android tablets has in the past been excused by Apple fans, saying that "iOS/iPadOS is more optimized and doesn't need more RAM" - until something like this happens and people are left out. It really sucks :/
@@Tanax13 this Situation Change nothing to the Point that iOS needs just the half of RAM the average Android system needs... My Android Tablets i use(d) (Lenovo p11 plus and Samsung Tab A8) wants each 2gb RAM on idle, the iPad needs just a bit over 1gb so far i know... So the one thing has not realy something to do with the other...
This was great. I just found your channel and sent it to my cousin. We debated every chance we get over the Apple and Samsung issues. When people talk Samsung they say Andriod. As if Samsung is the whole Andriod Market place. I have been using the Note since its inception and now I have a Fold 4. I use Dex on a daily bases. I use "link to Windows" in the office and Dex on the road. I love the ability to house all the information in one device. I often notice with iPhone users say " If I want this feature I use this device and then switch off". The ability to use Samsung Fold 4 as the "computer" when not in the office is perfect. I find also depending on the type of person you are creative vs anal (LOL) the device you like fits what you are doing. For example, I am a law student. I love the fact that I can watch a lecture, have One Note open and then have a textbook open all at once. The ability to "truly' multi-task adds value to my life.
Hiya! I think I need to do a fresh version of this video as there have been quite a few updates now. Both are great options but I still think the Tab S8 Ultra (because of the aspect ratio and screen size) offers a better experience. The iPad Pro is amazing and suits many workflows and I still love it but I am annoyed that Apple doesn’t allow it to do more…
ipad external monitor support is the ONLY thing that I care about from the whole WWDC. Please test the heck out of it and show us what it’s like because I dont’ want to upgrade to M1 ipad if it’s lame. Thanks!
Rigth now it's very very limited. Which is kind of expected but I will 100% be testing this on a daily basis and provide videos here as things progress. I am with you there, I wish they just made it awesome rather than just adding it as a second thought feature...
Thank you Raees! I use two monitors, one is the INNOCN 4K I reviewed here:th-cam.com/video/ZKsdHmCa5JY/w-d-xo.html If you don’t want to watch the review, here’s a link to it: geni.us/tEZNKO And the other (the white one) is a Samsung Smart monitor, also 4K: geni.us/iIUskhS
I dont understand why Apple has to do things in such a way that still leaves you wanting more. Its like when you ask a kid to do something and they do it in a way that is "technically" right but not at all what you asked for.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the iPadOS 16. For all the cool features introduced in this latest OS refresh, it is ASTOUNDING to me that you still cannot format an external drive smoothly on the iPad Pro. It HAS a TB4 port, for heaven’s sake!! 😡🤬🤬🤬 (How, oh HOW can THAT be the one ☝🏼 thing Apple choses to blow over as a ‘feature’ to come at some unspecified time?!? 😳🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️) I still quite enjoy my M1 iPad Pro, and he’s still good to me, especially when he went to the gym and improved his TB speeds on the treadmill 🏃♂️⚡️, however absent the formatting of his finish line might be 😕 Keep up the excellent work, Alex! I always appreciate your perspectives and reviews. Have an awesome one! 😃🙏🏻
Incredible right!? Thanks so much Legna, that's a great point too. I still can't believe they had the nerve to say "this is your next computer". They have a LOT of gorund to cover before the competition completely eclipses them from a tablet functionality point of view.
The fact that their scrum master thought we really cared about the weather app and put it on their roadmap of features for this release is what blows my mind. They could have utilized that time for something way more useful. I mean damn I would have preferred a calculator app if they were going to do that
Haven’t thought of that aspect but you’re absolutely right!! I always wonder what happened in those deciding meetings 😂 “let’s not give them that really useful feature… let’s give them weather” 😆

@@AlexGTech hey, its interesting that I found that exact one and very curious if it fits S8 ultra better. The magnetic plate and everything. So im looking forward to your next review. Thanks for your great videos and hard work. Cheers.
I gave away my 11 inch ipad pro 2020 in outrage that stage manager and other features arent available when i know that my ipad is more than capable of running a few windows at the same time... Decided to trade in my 2017 ipad pro that I never use for a $600 discount on the tab S8 Ultra! M1 and M2? Its MCrap when the software locks you up... First android device and could not be happier! Now I have a Windows PC, Android Tablet, and an iPhone lol. Have had my iPhone on 15.1 for the jailbreak thats releasing in a few weeks. Iits time to unlock the true potential of iPhone! Apple is so greedy!
Thanks for this video. I love apple hardware but the issue is that they rest on their laurels. And now there are good hardware alternatives with somewhat better software in terms of flexibility and freedom. Their miss with iPad OS is an opportunity for their competitors. Now if the competitors (talking to you specifically Google) could capitalize on it and give us the long term app support we want.
These are the same thought that I have. The iPad has great hardware, but iPadOS is holding it back due to the limitations. The competition is fierce in the tablet space now thanks to Samsung, Microsoft, and Lenovo. I agree that Google needs to start hunkering down when it comes to Android tablets. While Android 13 is supposedly focusing on tablets, Google needs to not only optimize their apps, but also encourage developers to optimize theirs, along with releasing desktop applications to take advantage of Samsung DeX.
When connected to a portable monitor, how does the galaxy tab recharges the battery? Or even better, does. it use pass through if the monitor has power delivery to the device (via usbc)?
Question: Is it possible to turn off the screen of the Samsung phone or tablet while using Dex only with your keyboard and mouse? Or it's a must that they must be active while you're in Dex mode? Coz it will consume more battery while using it on Dex mode, right?
This is great leap forward for Apple, I think it will be interesting to see which external gadgets leverage it - If I connect Ipad (without Apple Folio keyboard) with just USB then we get black portions on screen. I want a accessory to which I can attach my IPAD and use full blown keyboard (not Apple folio) and work monitor. Did you check if sound still comes from IPAD or it uses monitor speakers (or speakers attached to monitor) ?
Btw, do you tried scaling? That is probably most interesting change in iPadOS 16 for me. S8 lineup can change scaling... I would like to see different iPad scaling options in action - how much you can get in comparsion to current state
I decided to buy the non M1 iPad because its cheaper and that device will still be supported and works fast and personally I dont care about stage manager because I dont think tablets would be even comparable to a laptop-PC workflow
Fair point. I agree that using a tablet as the main computer will not tick every box for some workflows. But… some workflows are really possible to be done just using a tablet. Question of preference and type of work I guess
It strikes me that stage manager is just a way to keep multiple Windows open in view, and not really a proper multitasking set up. As you can see some apps tile on top of each other and don't really work side-by-side.
This is still very sad. I did the same last year and bought the M1 IpadPro 1TB. Everyday I force myself to use this device and it still frustrates me a lot. File manager is horrendous. App layout location very confusing. Still not possible to format an external drive. No calculator! Ipad PRO, very "proless". I have Macbook Pro 2015 (great), Unbutu and also Samsung N20. None of them is perfect but you can use them very easily. Not on Ipad. Apple did it very well.
Well now you have a reason to buy an M1 iPad Pro (stage manager), with IPad OS 17 I have a bad feeling more new features will come but will be exclusive to M1 iPads only. So me owning an Ipad pro 2018 will get left behind even more. Stage manager is just a beginning.
Apple doesn’t care about caniblizing sales. See the iPod that was discontinued. I think external display support took so long due to hardware constraints and external displays not being that popular
@@AlexGTech I think it’s a combination of RAM and swap capabilities. The older Pros aren’t able to use the new swap memory feature and while the 2020 Air can use swap doesn’t have the RAM required.
Hello there, does Stage manager allow us to have Zoom video call, and use other apps without losing video? This has been available on Android for years as I know.
Zoom and Team works. Zoom is a bit buggy but re-launching the app seems to stabilise it. It's early days of course but should work well by the time it goes public. I am still testing what happens with audio (e.g. will it come out the iPad, the monitor or connected headphones, etc)
I think iPad OS 17 will get more new features but will be exclusive to M1 iPads only, so the A series iPad users will get left behind even more unfortunately which pisses me off (iPad pro 2018 user)
Honestly, I use a cell phone and any larger screen computing device is always a Surface Laptop. I have a 13 inch, but you can get 13 or 15 inch screens. Surface laptops have touchscreen, keyboard, full desktop OS, awesome battery life, good sound and screen quality. Also its lighter than a iPad 13 pro with keyboard. Apple has completely muddied the waters with pushing the iPad as a laptop replacement and then deliberately stalled or manipulated iPadOS features so it actually DOES NOT become a laptop replacement. Sick. So many people buying iPads then putting it aside to walk over to their desktop or pull out an old laptop to finish their work. Let me put it this way, on any trip... whether at the airport, on board a flight, at the hotel, at a coffee shop... I would choose to have a thin and light laptop over an iPad 10 times out of 10. At least samsung is actually TRYING to bring full desktop OS features to their tablets. Just look at screen snapping on samsung tablets, it mimics windows screen snapping and is a sensible way to multitask. Apple has this awkward Stage Manager, which again, middies the waters deliberately. To put mildly, Apple has poisoned the computing waters in order to sell devices. Sick.
Definitely reviewing it! My first impressions: great resolution and options for different types of content/workflows. But slow to recognise different inputs and not the best anti-reflective coating… stay tuned for my full review 👊🏼
I agree with you. I have a 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro with 16 GB RAM. It's a great piece of hardware let down by a poor operating system. iPad OS 16 is an improvement on previous, but it still doesn't go far enough. Why can't I format an external drive or SD card on an iPad Pro instead having to carry around a headless Raspberry Pi 4 configured as a USB-C gadget to do all the things an iPad can't? Why can't I run VMs and emulators on an M1 iPad Pro, its technically capable? OK, there are some workarounds using XCode to compile and side load Apps on to my iPad but that requires another piece of Apple hardware (Mac computer) and is not convenient! I refuse to buy a Mac laptop because any mobile device without touch display and pen support is next to useless.
It’s maddening isn’t it Keith? They actually showed us how you can work with the iPad as the main device to do all sorts of things but outside artists who can totally use it for great creative work, and the basic office stuff, the iPad is a missed opportunity for me… Good to see competitors developing their software and making people thing again. I’m sure eventually they will have to do something about making the iPad more useful. Instead of creating a gap ams forcing people towards their laptops, because let’s face it, that’s what the real motivation is for them…
Can you please show us if apps are available in 3x1 or 2x2 without stacking on top of each other? All I've seen from TH-camrs is apps stacking, but no one has shown me multitasking with 3 to 4 apps visible at once without stacking on top of each other.
I tried that and have to say it’s really hard to get it to work. I feel it depends on the apps right now. Some apps are “readier” than others. Will definitely show that next time
Hi there, I am using a couple of 4K monitors. This is one of them, I reviewed it a couple of days ago: th-cam.com/video/ZKsdHmCa5JY/w-d-xo.html - Will review the other one soon, but that's the Samsung Smart Monitor: geni.us/iIUskhS
Yeah, I do not see that stage manager does that much as dex. Rocking new S8+ from yesterday replaced my rented iPad Air 4. There is really good low scaling and much more content on screen than on 10.9". On iPad I had problem with two apps side by side becouse of not wide format. Even 12.9" have less room than 12.4" S8+
@@AlexGTech I realized that for my tablet use two apps side by side are mostly enough, so no need for DeX or Stage manager at all. Full external display is fine in my use cas, when I want, for example, connect hotel TV or something like that to watch content or use bigger screen, but nothing I will use daily. Some apps even does support full screen on external TV like Netflix and HBO.. I watched many videos recently about Samsung S8 lineup and realized that 16:10 aspect ratio will work much better for me. I was trying S8 Ultra in showroom, but that beast is too heavy for my taste. Sure, I losing perfromance with Galaxy Tabs, but honestly I cant fully utilize A14 in iPad Air... so SD8 Gen1 is fine for my use. Only really one I missing from that transition is keyboard case without backlight keys and easy connect of Airpods as I still rocking iPhone and Macbook.
For me stage manager brought external display capabilities, but more of a gimmick. Perhaps others have been able to make better use; but I find that Samsung Dex is an undersold game changer. I use dex using my Samsung S20 and that is a really great user experience. I have an iPad Pro, what keeps me using it is IMovie and garage band which could be easily replaced.
@@AlexGTech good for you, Ipad has that aspect ratio for some good reason.. in a way users can use it both landscape and portrait orientation. for reading news and books , ipad is good. samsung is way to tall. Apple just balanced it.
Hi there, the two shown in this video can be found here by the way: 🛒 Satechi Aluminium stand: geni.us/X4TzEoV 🛒 UGreen Aluminium stand shown in this video: geni.us/BDArbly And here is a link to a better one which I will be dropping a video about very soon (it's the best I found so far for the Tab S8 Ultra) bit.ly/39lz37N
At 2:45 you mention you used DeX on the S22 and "it wasn't as good" - what do you mean by this? It shouldn't be any different than having your Tab connected to the monitor.
Hi there, in my experience I found a horrible lag using the Logitech Mouse and keyboard (same ones I use with the Tab S8 Ultra) it was pretty unusable. I haven’t tried it in the last couple of weeks but will give another go and see how it behaves
Hi there, the ones in this video (think there are two)are the Satechi and an Ugreen one. Satechi (actually an iPad USB-C stand but not all ports work with the Tab S8, geni.us/X4TzEoV) Ugreen: geni.us/BDArbly But the best I found so far though is the Lululook one: geni.us/a0BdJP (doing a review on this soon)
None of these Dex vs Stage Manager comparisons account for the fact that iPadOS can handle true 6K displays. Anything above 4k - 5k2k, 5k, and 6k. Dex only supports QHD max. Simply, the ability to run LumaFusion docked into a Thunderbolt Hub w/ 2.5Gig ethernet, NVME pulling and editing multiple 4K files off a SAN makes the iPad Pro a real pro mobile device. That in itself makes it a very valid use case versus opening up Chrome or LibreOffice on Dex.
You have a point there on the Thunderbolt capabilities and displays but I’m still annoyed that even that took Apple months to sort out as the iPad Pro out of the box did not work well with any TB4 hubs! I think with time it will be more polished and work better but makes me a bit annoyed that it will only work on M1 (as far as I know anyway)
@@AlexGTech If you had a M1 like me, you might have a different outlook. I have two LG 5ks in my office, one of them connected to a OWC Thunderbolt 4 hub. That hub lets me connect my personal laptop, my wife, or my work issued laptop or run dual 5ks off my M1 Max. I also have a 21:9 3440x1440 ultrawide in my kids room. and in my bedroom a LG4k via Caldigit hub. So the ability to use all those different types of resolution matters. I do all my social media work - Instagram stories, photo editing via LumaFusion/Affinity Photo strictly on an iPad. I use my Macbooks for non social media work. The ability to add a bunch of motion graphics intro/outros off a NVME into a quick 20 second video I can do editing on a 5K monitor is 10000x more useful to me.

And not everyone uses apps like procreate. Not everyone who uses a tablet is a graphics artist
I just found your TH-cam channel and I was not going to watch your video because ios16 is not out yet and it’s bata1 and you’re doing a Dex vs Ios16 video lol. But I watch it anyway and love your work. But I just wanted to say I remember when Dex first came out and it was garbage, now after they worked on it it’s really good. Just saying I would like to see you do a video at the end of the year when ios16 is out. Then I can see more if to go with S Tab or M1. iPad
Thank you, I appreciate your transparency there. And you’re right, it’s too early for a proper comparison which is why I made it clear that not only iPadOS but the apps as well are in very different development stages so I will be doing updates as things develop.
I want to buy a Samsung Tab S8 ultra, but I have a choice between the iPad Pro M1 and the S8 ultra. What do you advise me to take? I need it for studying and my youtube channel
I'm thinking of ditching my old Windows laptop and moving to Dex. My plan was to manage with only the s22 ultra and an extra monitor, keyboard and mouse. You said that Dex isn't as good on a phone as it is on the tablet. Why is that? Is it just the larger screen or are there other differences?
I thoughts that you will show differences between samsung and apple. Instead of talking about it. Like dex does this and apple in this situation this. :/
Hi there. I did another video after this one as a follow-up. Although I do admit this one was a bit rushed as it was the first day of the release. I am now testing the public beta and will do a final update soon before the final release is out to all users, so expect a more complete comparison soon.
I think I was using the HDMI - USB-C directly from the monitor if it was the white one, but I also tested it with a USB-C cable from another 4K monitor I have
I loved this video.
It has battery 4500 mAh
Cheers
While there may be less RAM on older iPads, my 20 year old Gateway tablet PC supports multi-window and dual displays...with 2GB RAM. The hardware of let's say...a 2018 iPad pro is still comparable to an 11th gen mobile core i5. Apple is just being greedy at this point, and the ONLY reason for them to exclude older hardware is PROFIT.
Exactly! I don't think it's a hardware limitation. It's more of a profit move. 100% agree with you.

Great video Alex! Currently putting the M1 iPad Pro through it's paces with the beta myself so great to see this.
Thanks Michael!! Loving the changes overall but fairly buggy in some areas still.
- It’s as far away from cost efficient
- As good as M1 “may be” it doesn’t support architectural programs.
- Pre M1 MacBooks pro would heat up once I try to get any work done
- architectural rendering would require the cheese grater max pro to even be viable as a work setup, meanwhile I can live off an Alienware full time without requiring and desktop.
- expanding memory (ram or hdd) on apple hardware is simply not an option
I must confess, the best way to waste your money as an architect is have the illusion that mac or iPads would do anything for you.
If I walk into a meeting room with no Apple TV I cannot share my screen. Other devices would connect with a simple hdmi.
Just my own angle.
I watch apple content on TH-cam knowing I will never invest in anyone again, behind all the picture perfect marketing is no value and a big walled garden
These are just the tip of the iceberg.
Majority of devices that support dex are still being updated though
Thanks so much for watching and apologies for the “rushed” feel to it. No background music, no special effects 😂 I had to get this out quickly. Looking forward to seeing how this develops but wonder what you think of iPadOS 16 so far and whether it is better than Samsung Dex for example? Let me know down here in the comments 👇
This kind of video i wanted to see to prove myself i did'nt made a mistake buying the Tab S8plus
I own it for like 2 months now and i'm very glad that i changed to Samsung...
The M1 inside the iPad makes no sense given the limitations we’ve had…
Anyway, let’s hope they wake up and give this device the attention it deserves and delivers on the vision Steve Jobs himself had for it.
Thanks Samuel, I wondered about this and glad you confirm what I was thinking. It annoys me that they do this 😞
Unfortunately its because the 2018 ipad pro has low memory it wouldn’t be able to run this the m1 ipads have 16gb ram
@@allstarkidXD The Galaxy Tab S5e has 4gb of ram and it's a relatively weak midrange tablet with Snapdragon 670 and yet it supports DeX with external monitor support. There is no excuses here, Apple just wants people to pay more money.

Totally agree… I know it’s early days but doesn’t look good 😞
It will be great to understand how zoom functions with stage manager.
Thank you, I will try that! I’m not sure Dex can do this so that’s a nice differentiation
Thanks Lewis! Will make sure to keep updating as things develop in this space 👊🏼
WOW! Yes, I had a feeling that this would be perfect for many people! WIthout my video editing I could probably do 90% of my work on it, for sure!
As you said, the potential is there!
that's the video I wanted to see and algorithm gave it to me! great vid, definitely subbing
Thank you so much!! The algo works sometimes 😂
I have both and android makes more sense to me. Easy multitasking and easy file transfer. I have to use specific hard drive for ipad in order to recognize it unlike Android you can use any hard drive. For me
Android you are the admin
While apple you are the user.
@@Tanax13 haha it's so true. I've seen lots of apple users say exactly that

Seriously if you take out the brand names and sell these tablets based on features and productivity, Samsung would dominate.
Hi there, I really agree with you on that one!!
Very good criticism of iPadOS 16. Fair comments
Thanks so much! Have a great day 😎
Been looking for a video about this as I’m currently trying to decide between buying an iPad or Samsung tablet
Hiya! I think I need to do a fresh version of this video as there have been quite a few updates now. Both are great options but I still think the Tab S8 Ultra (because of the aspect ratio and screen size) offers a better experience. The iPad Pro is amazing and suits many workflows and I still love it but I am annoyed that Apple doesn’t allow it to do more…
Great review, I like the way explain things in great detail. Subscribed. Keep up the good work.

Yes it does. It's only the non-M1 iPads that will likely not get some of these updates.

Yup!!
ipad external monitor support is the ONLY thing that I care about from the whole WWDC.
Just because Stage manager hasn’t reached all iPad Pros, it’s already a reason to switch to Samsung despite having loved the iPad all my life.
I have a feeling a lot of customers will do the same 😞
What monitor are you using? Looks great. Great video btw

And the other (the white one) is a Samsung Smart monitor, also 4K: geni.us/iIUskhS
For the full resize features, developers need to adopt it, so it will hopefullly come. To move apps to the other monitor use the 3 dots
Thank you! Will give that a go!
I dont understand why Apple has to do things in such a way that still leaves you wanting more. Its like when you ask a kid to do something and they do it in a way that is "technically" right but not at all what you asked for.
That’s a great perspective! It’s like they’re begrudgingly giving us what we asked for. But there’s always a catch as a result
(How, oh HOW can THAT be the one ☝🏼 thing Apple choses to blow over as a ‘feature’ to come at some unspecified time?!? 😳🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️)
I still quite enjoy my M1 iPad Pro, and he’s still good to me, especially when he went to the gym and improved his TB speeds on the treadmill 🏃♂️⚡️, however absent the formatting of his finish line might be 😕
Keep up the excellent work, Alex! I always appreciate your perspectives and reviews. Have an awesome one!

Incredible right!? Thanks so much Legna, that's a great point too. I still can't believe they had the nerve to say "this is your next computer". They have a LOT of gorund to cover before the competition completely eclipses them from a tablet functionality point of view.
did they say that for real?😂😂
The fact that their scrum master thought we really cared about the weather app and put it on their roadmap of features for this release is what blows my mind. They could have utilized that time for something way more useful. I mean damn I would have preferred a calculator app if they were going to do that
Haven’t thought of that aspect but you’re absolutely right!! I always wonder what happened in those deciding meetings 😂 “let’s not give them that really useful feature… let’s give them weather” 😆
Are you using the 11 inch or 12.9 inch in this video?
12.9 but also trying the iPad Air right now, will do another video on it too
What monitor are you using ? It looks so clean
Hi there, I used the new Samsung Smart monitor and a Innocn 4K:

I think I just found a better one! bit.ly/39lz37N I will be reviewing it soon!
Thank you for this video.
My pleasure!! More to come for sure as this thing develops
Thanks Joal!!! I agree, Both Google and Samsung have had two or three years of opportunity as Apple keep missing the mark on the pro tablet market.
100% agree. Love to see all these beautiful hardware advances but there’s definitely a need for software to match it.
When connected to a portable monitor, how does the galaxy tab recharges the battery? Or even better, does. it use pass through if the monitor has power delivery to the device (via usbc)?
It does when I use a standard monitor! I have a couple of portable monitors in the studio so I will test that for you when I'm back there next week 👊🏼
Question:
Is it possible to turn off the screen of the Samsung phone or tablet while using Dex only with your keyboard and mouse? Or it's a must that they must be active while you're in Dex mode? Coz it will consume more battery while using it on Dex mode, right?
Good question! I never tried it as I like to keep it for multitasking but will see if it's possible...
Sound comes from the iPad on this particular monitor (USB-C connection not HDMI)
Leap forward for Apple, but not in whole. Stage manager is minute compared to Dex. You have to use both to appreciate Dex.
I've been using Galaxy Tab S8 for a month and I rarely go to its tablet mode. Samsung Dex is that good.
Awesome right? Love it to bits 😊
Btw, do you tried scaling? That is probably most interesting change in iPadOS 16 for me. S8 lineup can change scaling... I would like to see different iPad scaling options in action - how much you can get in comparsion to current state
Will give this a go! Not sure I tried it, think I saw the setting but didn’t change it
@@AlexGTech Looling forward, thanks
I decided to buy the non M1 iPad because its cheaper and that device will still be supported and works fast and personally I dont care about stage manager because I dont think tablets would be even comparable to a laptop-PC workflow
Fair point. I agree that using a tablet as the main computer will not tick every box for some workflows. But… some workflows are really possible to be done just using a tablet. Question of preference and type of work I guess
It strikes me that stage manager is just a way to keep multiple Windows open in view, and not really a proper multitasking set up. As you can see some apps tile on top of each other and don't really work side-by-side.
Yes, it’s hard to “control” how the apps look on the screen. With Dex we have total control over the size and position of windows

Nice video Alex but I don’t install the beta but it’s looking good can’t wait nice content 🇮🇪😎👏
That’s very sensible Mary 😊 thanks so much!!
Apple doesn’t care about caniblizing sales. See the iPod that was discontinued. I think external display support took so long due to hardware constraints and external displays not being that popular
I really want to believe that but given we have 4GB RAM devices out there able to do this makes me think it’s a profit decision not to enable it
@@AlexGTech I think it’s a combination of RAM and swap capabilities. The older Pros aren’t able to use the new swap memory feature and while the 2020 Air can use swap doesn’t have the RAM required.
Yeah, we need a reviewer who can do some real talking. Thank you, Alex.
Thank you so much Trisstan, really appreciate that 🙏🏼
1 Samsung screen is bigger. 2 you have dex. 3 you can put a ssd. 4 pencil is free.
Great video! Can you use an Imac as an external monitor for your Ipad M1 like a regular monitor? Thank you
Thank you Jane! I don't have an iMac but I am not sure this would work. I will let you know if I find out
@@AlexGTech Thank you!!!
@@AlexGTech thanks a bunch)
I think iPad OS 17 will get more new features but will be exclusive to M1 iPads only, so the A series iPad users will get left behind even more unfortunately which pisses me off (iPad pro 2018 user)
iPadOS 16 is already doing that. I’m pissed too! It’s really greedy, just to make people buy their latest stuff 😖
Sick.
Can you do a screen recording in iPadOS16? I want to know if you can record the other external monitor while working other things on the iPad...
Great question, I will give this a go and let you know asap
will you be reviewing this Samsung M8 monitor too? ;) I'm curious if it's worth grabbing one
Definitely reviewing it! My first impressions: great resolution and options for different types of content/workflows. But slow to recognise different inputs and not the best anti-reflective coating… stay tuned for my full review 👊🏼
Thanks for the video, it was helpful
Thank you so much!!
Great video, I understand that it can be intentional but I suggest you to use a better light for your face, the absence of good light distracts.
Thanks - appreciate the feedback 👊🏼
I’m going to be trying to run a Microsoft Teams call this morning with this new beta 😬

@@AlexGTech 🙏It worked.
@@kevinross1243 sweet!
They actually showed us how you can work with the iPad as the main device to do all sorts of things but outside artists who can totally use it for great creative work, and the basic office stuff, the iPad is a missed opportunity for me…
Good to see competitors developing their software and making people thing again.
Will definitely show that next time
Thanks! Cheers!
Perfect comparison. Stage Manager needs really be more refined.
Absolutely… I was hoping it was just a Beta thing but still doesn’t look great…
@@AlexGTech Yeah, I hope that after that, Samsung gets more attention for Samsung DEX plattform too.
What monitor do you have?
Hi there, I am using a couple of 4K monitors. This is one of them, I reviewed it a couple of days ago: th-cam.com/video/ZKsdHmCa5JY/w-d-xo.html - Will review the other one soon, but that's the Samsung Smart Monitor: geni.us/iIUskhS
Thank you!
Damn ur red glasses looked clean asf
Thank you 😊 they’re Gucci ones 😎
I hope they don’t actually require the keyboard case to use it. I have one but I prefer my keyboard.
Same here, that would also be annoying for people who want to have the iPad on a higher stand
Yes they’re really not nailing the whole multitasking yet! On the right direction though!
I have an iPad Pro, what keeps me using it is IMovie and garage band which could be easily replaced.
as a 3d designer, which would be better?
Hi there Diego, I would assume iPad because of apps availability but to be honest I don’t know much about 3D design apps…
What's the difference in dex on s22 ultra and the tab s8 ultra when connected to external monitor.
I found the mouse and keyboard have a horrible lag with the S22 Ultra (I’m using the Logitech gear, same ones I used with the tab S8 Ultra)
@@AlexGTech I see thanks alot for the quick response.
Did you say samsung has better aspect ratio ? then you are using it only in landscape mode.
Yes for watching content and gaming the tab s8 has a more immersive aspect ratio in my opinion
@@AlexGTech good for you, Ipad has that aspect ratio for some good reason.. in a way users can use it both landscape and portrait orientation. for reading news and books , ipad is good. samsung is way to tall. Apple just balanced it.

Totally agree. The surface pro is a decent and arguably much more capable device.
I love when he say Galaxy tab S8 (ocho) hahaha I’m impressed, first time i hear it
😂 funny thing is I do speak Spanish too, but never noticed Ultra sounds like ocho but now that you mentioned it it definitely does! 😂
@@AlexGTech hahaha that's funny, yes for me sounds like ocho because i'm paraguayan i guess (?
At 2:45 you mention you used DeX on the S22 and "it wasn't as good" - what do you mean by this? It shouldn't be any different than having your Tab connected to the monitor.
Hi there, in my experience I found a horrible lag using the Logitech Mouse and keyboard (same ones I use with the Tab S8 Ultra) it was pretty unusable. I haven’t tried it in the last couple of weeks but will give another go and see how it behaves
@@AlexGTech Interesting. I use a Bluetooth MX Master 3 with my Note 10+ in DeX and have no latency.

HI there, it's the Samsung Smart Monitor: geni.us/iIUskhS
It's actually a 4K monitor (not sure if I said 4K or 5K). Really like it actually.
@@AlexGTech thank you
None of these Dex vs Stage Manager comparisons account for the fact that iPadOS can handle true 6K displays.
@Jack Costabile So no one cares about 4K? Excellent take dude, definitely not flawed

Stage Manager: Isn’t even officially available yet and it’s limited to only M1 devices
DeX: Works on older devices with less bugs, is available officially and can be used from even a phone
Tab S8 here I go
Not a bad move for productivity. Stage Manager (even when fully developed) may not have the same flexibility of dex. Time will tell of course..
But dex has almost no apps that are designed for it no tablet optimized apps or desktop apps
@@lesleyhaan116 There are a ton of tablet optimized applications. Only getting better with 12L and 13 with foldabkes helping the push.
@@parkerlreed there are a ton of tablet optimised applications how many? name me a few. @@lesleyhaan116 most of the apps I'm using on my Samsung tablet look fine to me. That's just something ignorant apple fanboys say as a talking point. And not everyone uses apps like procreate. Not everyone who uses a tablet is a graphics artist
