Agree. Even though there's barely any bass in it and it mostly just follows the progression, but it's on more than on point. Every single track on "The Chain" could top the top 10 lists in their respective categories. Simply amazing
Let's face it, there are hundreds of excellent bass lines out there, from "I'm a Man" by The Spencer Davis Group to James Jamerson "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" through Yes, Primus, Metallica, and Rush to name a few. What lifts any one of these excellent bass riffs is its context and ability to set the mood or drive the emotion in the song it's being played.

I guess we all have our favourites.. I couldn't think of a list of bass-lines without including Pino Palladino playing on Paul Youngs "Wherever I lay my hat" and Level 42 "Lessons in love"
I touch on this without getting into genres in my recent comment. A few of the bass players I name were definitely influenced by bass players in those genres. John Taylor for example.
My favorite bassline ever sadly goes under the radar. The Pot - Tool. The main bassline is good but there’s a line in the second half of the first verse that just grooves
I always loved Pink Floyd's money and another One bites the dust but I never realized how much those iconic bass lines drove those songs. Also Cliff Burton and Orion should have been way higher on the list!
Theres so many queen songs like that. John Deacon probably one of the greatest bass players ever. Radio gaga starts off bass, same with under pressure(which spawned ice ice baby) another one bites the dust as mentioned, thats just off the top of my head, but John Deacon was known for that and often went under the radar because of how good Freddie and Brian were as well.
@@eyeofhorus70I noticed this too. JPJ is absolutely shredding right alongside Page in the end of the song. If he had played the later part, it would have been approved without doubt.
Orion's break down in the song is completely epic. Of course, the parts you played are the norm but when Cliff hits the middle section it's one of the most epic sounds and structures ever. Most people don't even realize it's bass. Good vid brother.

Yeah, that For Whom The Bell Tolls bassline is about as sweet as it gets.
Any top ten bass list without Geddy is an incomplete list.
Truth!👍👍
Agreed
Geddy Lee, Justin Chancellor, and Cliff Burton
As a bassist I have never listened to geddy lee and probably never will
any virgin without rush is incomplete. i know because i am one.
Most Tool songs are amazing bass lines. That band is straight bass.
That band is straight drums first off, then bass, then vocals, then guitar in that order. Everyone in Tool is an amazing musician but come on, Danny Carey is one of the best drummers alive
When I think of tool bass lines, I immediately think of schism
@@yaboyblacklist2431 Forty Six & 2 also comes to mind as well.
@@DannyWH forgot about that one.
Schism has a very iconic bassline, but Forty-Six and Two is my favorite.
Enter sandman
*starts playing MoP*
Beat it
*starts playing Billie Jean*
Confused screaming*
Bro it’s master of puppets
@@sebastianacostasanchez6171 yeah that's what MoP means
TIL: Davie confuses songs so often
@@killuazoldyck6452 I think he does it intentionally, in order to convey that he really isn't into their music, just want to put forward some memorable basslines he picked up here and there.
@@perpetualbystander4516 kinda dissapointing then. Being a bass player but not liking legends? Sounds odd ngl
Also I dont still dont think it was on purpose but whatever
My favorite has always been Walk On The Wild Side, I like the duet between the electric and double basses :)
Him trying not to break character while seeing all the “honorable mentions” killed me because I knew exactly what he was thinking lol
The fact that Schism is only an honorable mention is atrocious.
@Rodrigo Ruiz Sanchez huh what channel
@Rodrigo Ruiz Sanchez What channel?
Yep!😠😠😠😠😠🤣😎
8:31 this bassline is actually from Billie Jean.
My personal TOP-3 for the Bass Riffs:
1) Ian Dury and The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
2) Skunk Anansie - Twisted (Everyday Hurts)
3) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away
I absolutely love that Davie isn't swayed by only choosing challenging basslines that are likely more stimulating as musician to play but aren't necessarily musically the most enjoyable
Orion is definitely the best Metallica bass line, especially the interlude
I agree, second is for whom the Hey tolls without doubt
(tell if u got the joke)
its my favorite metallica song
plus the solo
Orion deserves to be in top 10, it has a lot of different riffs, especially the bend solo around 6 minutes in
I guess we all have our favourites..
I couldn't think of a list of bass-lines without including
Pino Palladino playing on Paul Youngs "Wherever I lay my hat"
and
Level 42 "Lessons in love"
"Four, Beat it"
* Plays Billie Jean instead*
I instantly noticed that he doesn't know the diff.. figured I'd look at comments before I blurted it out. Good catch.
@@PDXGTP it's purposeful, he also play master of puppets on "enter sandman"
Knew I wasn't the only one who noticed this
SLAPP
Same for Metallica, says enter sandman, plays master of puppets
* Davie does not say "Whats up, *SLAPPERS* " *
Slappers - * Sadly sad crying*
Same
Sad times.. ¡-¡
nanii!!!!? youuuu!???
This "Beat it" bass line sounds suspiciously like the one from "Billie Jean"
If I remember correctly, MJ generally wrote several different songs from the same base line and pick out the one he liked to put in album.
No he just said the wrong song. Beat it and Billie Jean have completely different bass lines, tempos and keys, ones in F sharp minor ones in Eb minor.
Yeah that was for sure Billie Jean.. Beat it's bassline sound nothing like it in any way
#4 was definitely a Billy Jean. Now, can Davie reproduce Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo in Beat It on the bass?
@@par64guy there's no way he can play that!
roundabout being an honorable mention is the most watchmojo thing ever
Need more Iron Maiden covers by Davie! And more Cliff Burton pls...
yes yes yes
Yes plsss
These are all great ROCK basslines, but theres no such thing as a greatest basslines video without FUNK/DISCO/R&B
Yeah i dont get this to. Where is graham central station - hair ? For example
I touch on this without getting into genres in my recent comment. A few of the bass players I name were definitely influenced by bass players in those genres. John Taylor for example.
Was thinking the same. I think Davie evened it out a bit. Still as he said choosing a top ten is a hard job.
I play base rock is the easy to play some have only 4 noted some have 2 bite the Dust bunch of open notes and that little solo in between Boy please 😅
@@rixleblue4778 you mean pow right? haha
I'm a simple person
I see Geddy Lee, I click.

Don't worry mate. Yo momma will always love you no matter what. Or does she?
My favorite bassline ever sadly goes under the radar. The Pot - Tool. The main bassline is good but there’s a line in the second half of the first verse that just grooves
That somg is smokin. Thanks
I agree, especially how it doesn't allign with Adam's opening riff
Man that song is pure bass cum. Absolutely fenomenal
Your talking about the one that also appears in the very beginning of the song ?
@@amaury6978 yeah, but I think when paired with the drums it enhances it even more
As a beginner bassist, I think Feel Good Inc. is a fun and iconic beginner-friendly bassline.
Wow
Just like Roundabout
Yes feel good Inc is more good than dazed and confused
*“Just because there is a bass line in a great song, Doesn’t mean the bass line is a great bass line”*
_Thus Spoke Zarathustra_
shut up and go negotiate the Danelaw
jk
So, am I the only one who is hearing the music to Thus Spoke Zarathustra in his head?
Greetings from the kangaroo!
word
Boo Dazed and Confused is happily as iconic as Come Together and Money when it gets going in the chorus.
We need a whole cover of Orion!
Finally someone said it
Bassed
Davie stopped right before the solo ;_;
There was a really big blasphemy there with the rejection of Orion. I am glad I am no longer subscribed and definitely not liking the video
@ yeah for real, orion is a fucking masterpiece,
You gotta be blind to not see that orion is one of metallicas best bass songs
Jack White is so good he wrote a top 10 bassline on guitar while never playing the riff once on bass.
I was gonna say, Jack used a 7 string guitar for Seven Nation Army..
Yes
@@kruofud No he didn't. It's an octaver on a 6 string, not a 7 string.
@@Loubeeftard MY BAD
Bingo. No bass in the white stripes.
Seeing and hearing you play Wrathchild by Iron Maiden makes me so happy
i was so tired of the meme songs...
Two of my favorites, the baselines from Talking Heads:
"Born under punches" (live version)
and "Found a job"
He kept his right hand out of the frame so you wouldn’t see him playing Roundabout with a pick
Great catch!
Checkmate
Isn’t it originally played with a pick?
Yes, but this practice is not approved by Davie 504. Now that I think about it, why does he even have a pick?
@@yyz4761 I liek using a pick 😭
I facepalmed so hard when noticed that Tool and Muse basslines were just considered as Honorable mentions... 🤣
Everybody did with the tiniest amount of taste for music.
I always loved Pink Floyd's money and another One bites the dust
but I never realized how much those iconic bass lines drove those songs.
Also Cliff Burton and Orion should have been way higher on the list!
I would think that they would have used the bass line later on in Orion (the bass interlude I guess)
@@maxlm07 absolutely, I thought that's what would have been featured. It's the line Burton is remembered by, tattooed on Hetfield's arm.
I liked that he played money left handed or backwards for him lol
Orion is Perfect. ... it is my single favorite piece of music ever written.
I feel like Chris Wolstenholme should somehow figure in that list. His lines are so good, very innovative and creative...
Hysteria is iconic.
I was going to say that, Hysteria, Mercy and Bliss
Futurism>>>>>Hysteria

Easily in my top 3 basslines of all time. I've heard it live 3 times now (2nd Law, Drones, Will of the People) and dear god it's mind blowing!
Watched it live, it’s so beautiful
Thanks, man!
Andy Rourke's bass line in Barbarism begins at home is pretty iconic, too
I haven't even watched the video, but I'm gonna say... " *Yes, you CAN* "
Like Shia LaBeouf.
not he can, he wILL
Yes
I’m man,yes I’m
To me a great bass line will be one that give a song his unique identity: Money wouldn´t be Money without that bass line, regardless his simplicity.
The Who - Who Are You is in that category as well I feel
Bingo
Same with Dazed and Confused...and he only played the intro, so pretty lame on his part.
@@eyeofhorus70I noticed this too. JPJ is absolutely shredding right alongside Page in the end of the song. If he had played the later part, it would have been approved without doubt.
Davie playing some Iron Maiden. My life is complete
Orion was literally Cliff's masterpiece, and you played the wrong part, the intro and following sections are what make it iconic.
Orion's break down in the song is completely epic. Of course, the parts you played are the norm but when Cliff hits the middle section it's one of the most epic sounds and structures ever. Most people don't even realize it's bass. Good vid brother.
+1 for Orion, it's a journey in bass
@@jduncanandroid This is the thing! I've been listening to those albums for over 30 years and most of the time I didn't realise it was Cliff playing those parts. Never truly realised what an incredible bassist he was. Such a loss.
I recently heard the isolated bass track for Orion, and yeah, that middle section blew me away.
true but a solo isn't really the same as a bass line
AGEEDE 1000% MY FRIEND. I'M GOING HAVE ORION PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL...
