      I'd also add that the legends about Roman soldiers not liking meat (or beer) are probably much exaggerated. It probably largely comes from the fact that, before refrigeration, fresh meat was _much_ more difficult to get to the front than good grains, which did indeed constitute the majority of the Roman soldier's diet. The supply trains that followed Roman armies could often be the size of small cities depending upon the number of legions they were supporting, but adding a significant number of animals to that train whose sole purpose was to be slaughtered at some point was just cost ineffective, to say the least.
      Having said that, salted meats were absolutely part of the menu. In some eras, some records indicate that the typical legionary was afforded a pound of bacon per day! The spoils of war also often amounted to the victimization of many of the local livestock wherever Rome marched as well, of course.
      As for beer: Well, it wasn't huge in Roman culture to begin with, but neither were pants, and both of those are things that we know for a fact that Roman soldiers ended up living amongst and eventually adopting more than the typical Roman citizen. There are stories of former soldiers brewing beer for the younger comrades as part of the supply train in campaigns in Germany as well, indicating that while beer wasn't as popular as wine, many Romans ended up taking to the brew in situations where they were unable to get the grape stuff as readily.
      So to paraphrase the words uttered by a member of another army of equal moral fiber to that of _any_ empire: *"Looks like meat [and beer]'s back on the menu, boys!"*

    According to my knowledge of Ancient Rome, the consumption of less meat would be a reference to gladiators' diets, not soldier's. The common understanding of soldier's rations of the time was wheat, vegetables and some type of meat, depending on station and operations at the time. The staple ration for almost everyone in the empire were grains, such as wheat and barley. Gladiators were known to consume lower amounts of meat and larger amounts of grains such as barley, giving them the name hordearii or "barley eaters". The reason why their diet was different was most likely due to budgetary reasons, as generally slaves/prisoners are fed the bare minimum.
    Also, the young Catholic Church actually condemned sausage eating and made it a sin. Emperor Constantine seemed to agree with this sentiment, banning the eating of sausage as well. More specifically the banning of blood sausage dates back to the 10th century Byzantine Empire. Emperor Leo VI outlawed the production and consumption of blood sausage due to the prevalence of food poisoning associated with how blood sausage was prepared. Of course, an army marches on its stomach so it would be wise to avoid dysentery and the likes.
    Cheers!

    • @Burner-B
      @Burner-B 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gladiators were not slaves. They were athletes, more comparable to WWE than cage fighting; some even had their own product endorsements and often came from wealthy families. One of the most popular perfumes was their cleaning oil, so any one could make a decent second income.
      I'd think the diet is more for aesthetic reasons: they usually had quite the layer of subdermal fat. This allowed for impressive looking cuts AND gave protection against accidental deep cuts, even slight stab wounds.
      I would also guess that the blood sausage stigma was partially a holdover from kosher law.
      I know "sausage eater" used to be an insult, but forgot by whom, why or when 😑

    • @gaiusgermanicus6765
      @gaiusgermanicus6765 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Burner-B The majority of low-level gladiators were slaves or prisoners. They were taken care when it came to health and food, but also had strict training and were often looked down upon by the higher classes. This is even true when it comes to where they were allowed to be buried, as they were often segregated from freemen. Although often people would choose to become a gladiator freely, as you said they had a chance to become famous. Even at least one emperor joined in on the games. Emperor Commodus was the best-known example of such. So, you are partially correct, but for the most part they were indeed slaves or prisoners of war, or at the very least considered to be low class or slaves.
      There were multiple reasons why they had such a diet, budget, as well as high energy intake. Barley was considered an inferior grain by most Romans, but also considered healthy in relative terms.
      Cheers.

Scotch eggs are hard boiled eggs coated in sausage meat and breadcrumbs. Despite what the name would suggest, they aren't actually Scottish. A possible solution to the yellow color of the canned iguana meat: its potted. In the 18th century, a method of preserving meat was to seal it in a jar with a layer of clarified butter. The butter would be poured in melted, and allowed to cool, forming a waxy, translucent yellow plug between the meat and aerial microbes that might spoil it.

      Deathclaws were the result of prewar military experiments with genetically engineering a monster to unleash behind enemy lines. I have a running theory that the enclave made the deathclaws prewar in Appalachia and when the bombs dropped they were able to escape and the reason they are so rare in fallout 1 is because they are still in the process of migrating to the west coast which would also explain why most people talk about them like they're legends or don't exist or just straight up don't know what a deathclaw is. And it also explains why deathclaws are so prevalent in fallout 76 despite it being only 25-27 years after the bombs dropped, cuz it would only make sense that that's where they originated from. The Appalachian mountains are secluded, rural, and if one escaped it wouldn't be able to do much harm to anything because of the sparse population of west virginia and would be easier to contain, it also explains why the enclave have such an interest in deathclaws

    In 1981, a German landlord evicted a tenant without notice after the tenant spread surströmming brine in the apartment building's stairwell. When the landlord was taken to court, the court ruled that the termination was justified when the landlord's party demonstrated their case by opening a can inside the courtroom. The court concluded that it "had convinced itself that the disgusting smell of the fish brine far exceeded the degree that fellow-tenants in the building could be expected to tolerate"
    for the blood sausage,
    you usualy bleed out the meat and then keep it spinning in a tub to keep it from congealing ( in the traditional way i used make it with the bare hand) then later when you ready the sausage meat you add it back into. then when the sausage is heattreated, (depending on teh thickness) it is quiet sturdy you can cut them to chunks and put them on a stick for a nice crisp roasting.
    the fassnacht is a reference to Germanys Fasching/Karneval. it is common to celebrate by eating the Donut, however we kall it "Krapfen" usualy it is filled with jam like strawberry or cherry. and the sausage is just a bratwurst. a steamed then grilled pork sausage. the spoiled meat may be a reference to the usual low quality of teh "flesh" used in in those since we have a saying that you dount wanna know whats in a sausage

    On the topic of how they might have bred molerats, with them always digging through stuff, it actually shouldn’t be that difficult. In principal at least. You just need a solid metal compound area fenced off on all sides with additional stone blocks or something to prevent them from pushing in and just shattering the fence with pressure. My grandfather used wooden posts buried deep and reinforced with concrete blocks on the farm. The ground would have to be asphalt, concrete or again some metal platform with bedding so they don’t get injured or sick, but can’t burrow into it. This is all just a base. The main thing would be to actually stop them from trying to break out, not just creating a strong cage. Assuming you went out and caught a few of them somehow, you’d want to bring them in the cage and tie them to something, then shatter or pull out their teeth, and put metal nose rings on them. Irl we do this to pigs to deter them from uprooting and digging because it hurts them to push into the earth strongly with nose rings on. With next generations, take out the teeth while they are young, put nose rings and castrate males not suitable for mating. In a few years, you can actually set up a pretty solid molerat farming operation. So it’s really nothing too strange conceptually, it’s doable.

    Morale could affect a bunch of things, with good morale giving more exp, letting you run for longer, push yourself harder in terms of stamina/AP, giving you more strength and endurance at higher ends of it. It could be a gradual bar that gives more bonuses to more stuff the higher it is, and penalties if it's low. With maybe attributes like endurance/charisma/luck affecting how high your morale can go.

    By all means eat what the game refers to as…
    “a collection of meats in various surprising states of decay garnished with maggots”

    In Fallout 4 Deathclaws can loose their tails when it takes enough damage. If they still have any form of lizard regeneration, could we cut the tail off leaving it to grow back while having a possible 30lbs chunk of meat to smoke over hickory chips with a post war dry rub

    I always thought the town was pronounced "Hell-vee-shuh", and that they were "SILT" beans, like the fine sand or soil found around rivers and streams...

    Blood Sausage in Fallout you get through the Them's Good Eating perk and can be found on the corpses of I believe only humanoid creaters, there for you are committing cannibalism every time you eat them. Which would be a good reason for the Legion to ban them.

      IIRC, "blood sausage" is another shoutout to the original Wasteland, too. One of the over-the-top enemy death descriptions is that their "head explodes like a blood sausage".

      @@raziyatheseeker yup, Wasteland's descriptions were great but let's be honest. Some of them made no sense, how does a head explode like a "Blood Sausage" when a Blood Sausage is a tube of coagulated blood.

    7:10 New Vegas also has the deathclaw omelet you have to talk to some lady in sloan about it. She even mentions that her grandma had a deathclaw in a shed to get fresh eggs from, until someone killed it. Oh my mistake it's the wasteland omelte. But that's a refrence to fallout 2 in New vegas.

    Legit didn't expect that and got a laugh out of me. Okay, this humor is actually pretty great.
