- I review the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 380 and compare it to the Kimber Micro 380 for those of you looking to see how this gun compares to other guns in this caliber and size. Part of the video I also just continue my overall testing and review of the gun. I do discover a type of ammunition that the Bodyguard 2.0 does not perform well with. I am creating a playlist for all of my bodyguard reviews so check it out over time for the complete review!!
#bodyguard #smithandwesson #380acp #pocketcarry #concealcarry #everydaycarry #selfdefense #prepper #2ndamendment #airsoft #homedefense #preparedness #p365 #sig #ruger #kimber #pistol
Also the kimber mico 380 is 13.4oz while the bodyguard 2.0 is 9.8oz, so no where near double the weight, idk where you got info from that it weighs 18oz, that is just incorrect
You are right. dang it. I must have read my scale wrong and got 13 and 18 mixed up. My apologies. I’ll pin this comment.
Can’t speak for the Kimber but I can say I haven’t enjoyed a new pistol in a long time like I have my Bodyguard 2.0. Lightweight, accurate, soft. It’s a winner for me
Absolutely. It’s a fantastic gun, it’s really won me over and glad I bought it!
Hey, thanks for the shoutout man. Great comparison. The Kimber reminds me of the old Colt Mustang. It’s got a vibe man. But I believe the Bodyguard 2.0 is an overall better choice.
Thanks my friend! I agree, the kimber isn’t going anywhere for me though, it’s a keeper. 😂🤣. Sometimes you just have guns that are cool like you say!!
@@triggerbarPhD I think I've mentioned picking up a Sig P224. It's proportionally goofy with that deep P-classic series slide and frame, and barely leaves any left overs for two fingers on the grip, to keep the compact height.
I suppose I'd never say never, but it's a keeper. just for the way I think. When I saw it available and looked it over, I thought hmm, quality piece.
I am completely sold on the S&W 2.0 380 for everyday carry .
If you want a very lightweight, concealable 380, there is nothing better at this point!!
Same man, I have a hard time concealing in my summer clothes but this thing disappears carried AIWB and it's so comfortable. Can't wait to get my pocket holster for it.
@rushthezeppelin If I may offer a suggestion, I believe the brand of holster is " Bulldog." It is a sticky holster outside and slickinside and easily holsters. You can have a pair of shorts / draw strings and a t shirt, and this holster will stay in place , it does for myself. I live in a subtropical area, and this configuration works well.
Hopefully, it will work for you as well .
The Kimber Micro I had hung like Nathan Hale. One of the few guns I've gotten rid of. I got the Bodyguard 2.0 with no thumb safety a few weeks ago. I feel well armed with it in my back pocket. Absolute dream to shoot, for such a small gun.
😂🤣. Did it not run? I’ve heard of people with issues with the kimber, mines been fine and I must have got lucky. Yah this S&W is a keeper, they did this right.
Thanks for a very good review. After reading every review out there. The Bodyguard seems like the best small 380 on the market. I have one on order.
Thanks! I think you are going to like it, they really seamed to nail this one.
You will love it, guaranteed. I bet I've sold five of them just by letting my friends hold mine.
I think the Sig, Colt and Kimber 380's (the 1911-ish ones) all take each others mags, so if one is cheaper than the other you could try that. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Grey Beard! I did not know that, thanks for the tip!!
I'm not sure about the colt, but kimber micro 380, sig p238 and springfield 911 mags are interchangeable, kimber and springfield sell Mags cheaper than sig and they function the same
I'd really love to see a Kimber Micro .380 that takes BG 2.0 magazines. It's definitely possible.
It should be possible, that would be fun!
Its crazy when you pick up the bodyguard and feel how light it is then shoot it and realize there is zero recoil. I dont know what voodoo smith put in there but what a fantastic micro.
that’s a great description, it’s some sort of magic…
The only issue I have had with my BG2.0 has been with Winchester Target & Practice 95gr FMJ. I think it’s the flat nose on it. I have had 2 failure to feeds out of the 200 rounds I’ve shot. Thankfully, I only had 200 of those, so I won’t be getting them anymore.
It has had zero issues with:
PMC Bronze 90gr FMJ
S&B 92gr FMJ
Speer GD 90gr GDHP
S&B 77gr XRG Defense
Underwood 68gr Xtreme Defender
Fed 99gr HST
Remington 88gr JHP HTP’s
It’s been a very good pistol.
Thanks for this data, that’s great stuff. So the underwood stemmed defender ran in yours? Awesome! I haven’t tested much in mine. Just S&B FMJ, underwood (extreme defense and XTP +p), federal HST and hydro shock deep, blazer brass FMj and mag tech FMJ. All but the one type of underwood for me. Thanks again for sharing these details!!
@@triggerbarPhD
Yes, the Underwood Xtreme Defender 69gr ran great in both of the BG2.0’s I have (I run the non-safety, while my wife carries the safety model). I do have to say that I racked the slide on these hundreds and hundreds of times before I started shooting them. It’s what I do with every new pistol I get. I also do a crap ton of dry-fire secessions (my wife plays along, God bless her).
I have a few hundred rounds of Magtech 95gr FMJ coming in to test.
Wow 2!! Hey that’s a lot of good testing. Interesting on the slide racking. Maybe something to that. I’m also gonna policy my feed ramp and see if that makes a difference but honestly if it can’t run those I’m not concerned, it’s run everything else just fine! How is the manual safety to turn on and off?
@@triggerbarPhD After flipping it a ton, and about 100 rounds, it’s easier. It’s easy to deactivate, but takes a little effort to activate, which she likes.
I'm carrying 95 grain fmj round nose in my Bodyguard. (Blazer Brass) I shot some Underwood +p XTPs as well and had no issues with either. I do think they are a bit too much for this pistol though. I'm going to try some Winchester fmj flat points in it. If they cycle well, I may just stay with the Winchester. Good info Trigger Bar.👍
Those flat points are good rounds. It’s a toss up. I do thing that hydro shock deep from federal is a good round if you want hollow points but in general not many hollow points work with this round. I just tried from underwood +p XTP in mine yesterday and am working on the video! I agree with your assessment. It works but I think that this gun was not made for that round. Thanks again!!
I’ve been shooting the Sig Sauer 100 grain flat tip and had no issues at all.
Nice to see the Bodyguard compared to something other than the LCP. Thx.
Thanks! Hahaha well, it’s what I have and what I traded my lcp max for!!😂🤣. But thank-you!
Hey TBP! I’m more of a long gun fan. That is why I’m missing many of your and Turkeys videos.
I wish you tube would just automatically send out thumbs up 👍🏻 for me lol. Love all of your and your friends videos!!
Mike🙂
That’s very kind of you for even giving me the thumbs up. More long gun content in coming! More jakl and the POF revolution is going to make an appearance soon!! 😂
In case anybody want to know how much the Bodyguard weighs... on the scale with an empty 12 round magazine, it weights 11 5/8 ounces. Weight loaded will vary.
Mine without a mag was 9.9 oz. Thanks for this!!
Yes, in the specs S&W list "empty" weight as 9.80z but that's without a magazine in it and not with an empty magazine in it .. they confused alot of people, most saying "Why would you state the weight without a magazine"
I've been carrying a kimber micro 380 everyday for the last 3 years, I am very interested in the Bodyguard 2.0, it will probably become my EDC when I get one. The kimber is so much smaller and easier to carry than anything else I own for concealed carry, I choose it over my 9mm sig p365, sw shield 45acp, and over my sw model 642 airweight, mostly due to how I dress. If kimber had a 10 +1 mag capacity I wouldn't even be looking into the sw bodyguard
Awesome! I love my Kimber as you could tell. I sold my LCP max for it. I was willing to go down in capacity to have a gun that was easy to shoot. The kimber has such a nice trigger and is so fun to shoot…but, the lightweight of the BG 2.0, it’s ergonomics, and how easy it is to shoot. It’s the real deal. You’ll be happy but maybe you’ll be like me and keep the kimber too because it’s just a classy fun gun!
That's awesome, yes I'll definitely keep my kimber, it hurts my soul to sell any gun, especially something as nice and reliable as my kimber micro 380, i had a kimber micro 9 nightfall too, the only reason I sold it was bc the houge grips on it would cause me to turn the safety on while shooting, i had it for concealed carry so engaging the safety while shooting was a deal breaker for me, after I sold it I realized I could have just changed the grip. That was 1 of 2 guns I've ever sold and it still hurts me to think about it today lol
Awesome video btw, don't find many videos with comparisons to kimber, keep it up
@@stevecaran1149 I agree, I regret every one. But I think I made good decisions with their replacements too😂🤣🤷♂️
@@stevecaran1149 thank-you!!
The Bodyguard 2.0 is no where to be found in Northern Wyoming. I can't wait to snatch one up when they finally arrive. My LGS has them on order. I don't "need" another micro compact.. but if course I am getting it.😂
hahahahha, that's awesome! Great to hear from you again, I hope you are well. Yah, it's really a good one if you like this sort of things, little things on this pistol S&W really got right.
Go on online and buy one
The most impressive thing about the 2.0 is how much length is on the front strap for such a small footprint. Its just in a odd spot between a og lcp and a 43x i dont have a reason for it. But it is light, under 16oz loaded.
That’s really true. I can’t get over how much of may hand I can get on this thing and it really translates in the ability to shoot it!
I had an old Bursa 380 that wouldn't consistently run hollow points, no matter the weight or brand. I took it to a gun smith that identified a few burs in the feed ramp. I was not the first owner of the gun so the damage could have been caused by a previous owner.
Once the feed ramp was cleaned up and polished it'd feed perfectly. I was told that sometimes out of the factory the feed ramps are less than perfect and can cause an otherwise great gun to perform poorly.
I haven’t examined mine but I may do a fitz polish and buff on it. Great idea! I had a bursa at one point too!
Most people report problems with Underwood. Suspected problem is the flat nose design is hanging up on the split feed ramp. I'm carrying g9 in mine which has a longer nose fmj profile and it feeds like butter. If I ride the slide it jumps right up into the extractor. For ball ammo it loves armscor which has a longer nose design. I also got some tula zinc plated steel case. It ran the first 50 no hiccups. Second 50 though was having some hiccups and I think it's due to the shorter nose, the case also bulges a bit more at the base of the round which I think might be playing into as well. Was good malfunction clearing practice though. Definitely a sweet little gun though that disappears in my Vedder light tuck.
Thanks for the additional information! Yah I’m wondering if a little polish might help? Dont know. Good to know on the G2 and steel case! Hahaha yah sometimes malfunction practice is good! 😂🤣
I think your observations on the BG 2.0 are accurate, and as you continue to test will reaffirmed.
Thanks my friend! So far so good!!
Bodyguard 2.0 for the win!
Yes for sure!!
The only thing I have that is a close comparison is this goofy FEG PA-63 in 9mm Makarov, and it is really not a comparison, the BG wins easily.
As for the malfunction, I have noticed a few of the flat nosed FMJ's and hollow points get hung on the two piece feed ramp. A Q tip and a little CLP gets it running again. It gets carbon built up and a noticeable gap appears in the feed ramp, at least mine did.🤷♂
You'll be happy with that holster, Muddy River Tactical is my local tool store👊, that is where I picked up the BG and the holster. Awesome company, awesome people, if you are not happy, they will go out of their way to make you happy.👊 They have a TH-cam channel as well.👍
Hi DA! That PEG is a fine looking hand gun, very Walther ppk-ish. Thanks for the “tip” on the q-tip for the feedramp. I’ll make sure it’s gets a cleaning, I may buff it too.
That’s awesome about being local to them. I got the holster in and I love it. They make great quality holsters. I’m very impressed. I’ll have it on my next bodyguard video. Thanks again!!
Great video and review Sir. Thanks 🙏 for sharing brother!
Thanks buddy! I hope you are doing well!!
You would be surprised at how much your pinky finger adds to the guns stability for muzzle flip.
Absolutely. Even 1/2 a pinky finger is better than none! That may be the biggest contributor in the recoil control.
Get the Magpul Daka utility organizer it fits the 2.0 perfectly with magazine and space. Totally rubberized. Won’t fit the near 50 page manual that comes with the This fantastic weapon.Get a cheap loader if you have to have those last two rounds in the 12 round magazine. The beauty of that magazine is the extension not the capacity. 10 rounds is still more than most competitors are throwing into their weapons. Trust me your wife will love that Magpul organizer
Awesome thanks!
Hey trigger bar, I’m thinking with these little pistols that you may need to rotate/reposition your right hand in a different grip position so you are not shooting left as much and needing to drift your sights. I’ve needed to do the same. 🤷♂️
That absolutely could be the case. I’ve seen a great video by someone that showed because you can’t get as much support in your left hand it will hit left. But I also bench rested it to take out any grip issues and I was still shooting it left. After drifting the sights it’s dead on now. 🤷♂️
Hey for 380 they were ok. Not much recoil, or at least looks like light recoil. If I am honest, I rather the heavier gun so I can use it as a rock when I need that too.
I mean you aren’t wrong!! 😂🤣
Trigger bar. You need to use more trigger finger. You are too close to the finger pad
That is why you push your shot to the left with the kimber and low all over with the body guard.
My problem is when I put more finger in on these small guns it sticks into my support hand and cuts it, so I’ve had to adapt my grip.
The Smith & Wesson Body guard is half the weight, thinner and over all smaller than the Sig 365. It makes the Glock 42 look full size, and it shoots like a full size pistol. You can keep the kimber, the Sig 380's, etc. The Bodyguard 2.0 beats them in EVERY category. Ruger should just stop making the LCP Max all together. The Bodyguard 2.0 is really that good. It even eats "sergeant major" nickel plated steel case ammo (tula) like candy after a very short😮 break in period. Yes... almost all these tiny pistols are finicky for the first few magazines out of the box, including my Sig 365, Sig P238, that kimber, etc.
I agree with you. I’m going to do this comparison (well just did it but haven’t posted it yet) with the p365. Hard to beat this size, weight, accuracy, and shoot ability of this gun! Thanks for sharing!!
Ruger better up their game for sure. cant wait to see what they come up with on the lcp max 2.
@yourmomma2995 hey competition is good!! They had better!!
@@yourmomma2995 They can start by including two (2) magazines, and lowering the price a little bit. I love my Ruger tools, so I'm not putting g them down.
Have you tried flat nosed fmj ammo?
Not yet. The closest are those extreme defender bullets. I need to pick up some!
Great Video Trigger Bar I shot it at Goals and I really liked it
Thanks Chris! Yah it’s a nice shooter for being that small!
Years ago I did have a 380 and not knowing much about this load…It seemed like my Heritage in.22 win mag was more powerful. And honestly a heck of a lot more accurate “even with tumbling bullets”.
Thoughts?
I can’t remember the 380 brand but I got it cheap and sold it cheap Lol👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
That’s a good comparison to make. From what I understand but haven’t personally tested, 380 acp is a bit more powerful but they are close’ish. The downside is with 22 wmr it’s rimfire and potentially less reliable and you are starting with a smaller bullet and wouldn’t channel. But honestly just looking at the numbers they aren’t that far apart in terms of energy.
Very nice! Doesn’t seem like a lot of people carry 380 as much any more
That you see 🤣😂🤣😂🤷♂️. Most of us are too embarrassed lol. But for deep concealment, it’s really good!
couldn't quite see those failures clearly...but were they wedged against the bottom of feed-ramp? Not hooded up against the top?
Maybe just needs a polishing job? Hopefully?
And @ 2:32 when you had what I believe was the backstrap aligned...look how far forward the trigger is on the BG compared to the Kimber? I wonder if that also makes it easier to shoot & control? The beaver-tail on the Kimber is pretty low and also adds to the OAL and could affect carry depending on how one carries it.
I also noticed after comparing your grip on the two...the BG has a noticeable curve up, on the trigger-guard, right at the grip - that lets your naughty-finger 🖕move up the grip. That has to help? My Gen1 does not have that. Nor does the Kimber, or anywhere nearly as much.
It's hard for me to even accept that they somehow shaved .1" from the height???...I can't get even a whiff of having my pinky on any part of the grip or magazine - even with the one that has the extra flare added to bottom of magazine.
I'm holding off on getting one of these...but you know me - if they integrate a CT laser, I'll bite.
Hey SB, if you've never seen it before, maybe take a look at han dgu nhero, all stuck together.
It's easy to see what S&W did to the packaging, between the 1.0 and 2.0. Throw in the Kimber micro and the grip definitely gets sacrificed for overall height/size.
@@craigm1954 that's a cool site that I wasn't aware of - so, thanks for that!
And yes, now I can see S&W took the base of the grip all the way down to where the pinky-flare magazine goes to on the 1.0. The other magazine shaves a good 1/4" off if want height to be less.
And yeah, the Kimber is longer, when the beaver-tail is factored in. If I align ejection ports, then the barrels all go to same distance forward. And the Kimber has a lot less slide material behind the chamber. Which explains why when TBP aligned them from the back of the slide, the BG barrel & trigger was well ahead.
Interesting.
Thanks Shasta. I do believe bit of polishing will make a difference in this failure. It seemed to me they were hanging on the feed ramp.
Yes I think you are right the placement of the rigger makes a difference. As you pointed out later though the undercut of the trigger guard is genius move in this design and I believe makes all the difference. You can get so high up on this gun and it makes a difference in getting more hand on the similar grip.
Well hopefully they get that laser going for you then!!😂🤣
@@triggerbarPhD my bodyguard 2.0 will jam with Fiocchi training dynamics ball ammo. I polished the ramps and it still jams. I’ve noticed on the rounds that jam that when they are stripped from the magazine the front of the bullet pops up and strikes the top of the chamber and gets jammed between the slide and roof of chamber. I polished the roof of the chamber today to maybe help with feeding when this happens. I’m very picky with my carry guns and I won’t trust it to carry until this is fixed. I’m open to any suggestions on what might be causing the rounds to hit the roof of the chamber and get stuck.
Thanks TB, never thought you'd call youself a lefty. Oops, heading for the door. I liked the comparison, mostly because it seems the Kimber is very familar to you.
If you get the chance, let us know if the purpose built BG2 holster makes the foot print smaller? I'm guessing the kimber holster positions the grip of the BG2 more prominent, sticks farther out of the holster, even though the heights are similar?
Hi Craig! Lol, yah I’m one of those weird lefty’s, but only in the hand I use to write with! 😂🤣.
I just got the new holster in and it does fit better. I think it does make the foot print smaller. Could be purpose built or the different brand of holster. Probably both. I’ll show the holster in the next comparison. This just carries so much better than the kimber. Feels thinner and so much lighter even with more bullets.
@@triggerbarPhD Thanks TB. I don't feel like I'm in a rush, but I'll likely end up with one of these pistols. I was very near getting a "range fun" .380, kinda glad I didn't.
I guessing that since you drifted your rear sight, if you ever have to shoot left handed you wouldn't even be able to hit the paper with it. 99.9% it's the size of the gun and how folks pull the trigger on such a small gun that causes you to push it to the left. You should try some left handed shooting and see.
Will do!!
@@triggerbarPhD Let us know. I'm probably going to be buying one of these BG 2.0 because, well, because I don't have one... LOL
@boblaws9851 I subscribe to that philosophy!! It may be a bit. I can’t shoot again for a couple of weeks (it’s killing me!!) but sometimes life gets in the way. I have other rbodyguard and videos coming out but I’ll do one on this..
i saw a video where one guy chronoed his 2.0 i think it was with blazer ammo and his average was 1100 fps.
That’s crazy! Wow. I just finished shooting a video where I measured S&B, underwood +p, and federal Hydroshock deep. Only the underwood had a velocity like that. But it has very good velocities.
The Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 2.0 is THE BEST micro- subcompact 380 that has been designed and manufactured in the last 40+ years. BAR NONE!
They seemed to nail it!
@@triggerbarPhD yes they did.
@@triggerbarPhD Thank you for the content.
I got a question. Why don't you guys that are doing videos get a tripod? They're not that expensive
I have two and use them both. Thanks.
I'm telling you it's not the sights making you shoot to the left. Keep the heels of your hands touching Each other when you shoot and grip it tight. Low and left are a sign of a bad or weak grip.
Thanks for the tip. I’d believe you but I’m one of many. And after moving the sights over it’s hitting true consistently. I’ve had tons of comments saying it was also off from the factory for them. In the end, drifting the sight fixed it for me. Could it be my grip? Yup. But if drifting the sight fixed it, consistently, then I’m content.
Not when one of the former Kimber board members is an activist to ban firearms.
Yah that’s not good.
cool deal sir
Thanks my friend!!
Bodyguard 2.0 will fit large or small hands no problem. As for the pinky finger just roll it into a curl and it adds an extra base to your shotSeeing as how the Kimber cost twice as much and weighs twice as much take your wife with you when you go to look at them. Chances are you will be buying two and trading in your Kimber which at a used price might pay for one of the two bodyguards. I highly recommend you take your wife for a lady friend. You will be buying one even if you are too stubborn with your own gun
Hahaha. Well these are for me! I really like a deep conceal pocket carry. The kimber still has a better trigger and there is just something nice about the 1911 style and wood panel grips. But as you say, I’m sold on the bodyguard 2.0. I liked carrying my lcp max but hated shooting it which led to me getting the kimber and since they are the same dimensions I can still pocket carry easily. However the bodyguard gives me the best of those worlds, concealment, shoot ability AND weight.
I bought a new bodyguard 2.0 and that 12 round magazine should not be called a 12 round magazine. Because it's impossible to load that 12th round without a magazine loader I took this bodyguard 2.0 apart and cleaned it. Talk about nasty that was the dirtiest new gun I've ever bought.
I've owned two Shield Plus handguns. I can tell you that the 13-round magazines are tight. However, I've owned a 15-round magazine or two that were easy to load to capacity.
It is tight. On mine I can hand load it but I don’t like too. It has loosened up a little with leaving it loaded. I still use my Uplula to get the last one in but I did it without one at the range Saturday. Yah, first thing I did was clean this sucker. Mine just had tons of machine oil on it. Well, better than Ruger- my lcp had rust on it and the gun had just been out for a month or two. lol.
🫡
Thanks!
The Kimberly is not only too heavy. It is dangerous to carry with a round chambered.
Interesting. I didn’t think this was a series 70 like design. The safety seems to do more than block the hammer as I can also rack the slide when engaged. Thanks for this! I’m gonna dig deeper. But I do carry my 2011’s and 1911’s this way too.
No it's not. It's designed to be carried cocked and locked. Or you can pull the hammer to half cock but need to remember to pull it to full cock if you need to use it. I carried a kimber micro 9 appendix for years cocked and locked the whole time
The kimber isn't double the weight, not even close. Thd kimber is 13.4 oz and bodyguard 2.0 is 9.8 oz
And you obviously have no idea what you're talking about, carry a kimber micro with a round chambered is very safe, I wouldn't have it pointed at my manhood everyday for the past years if it wasn't
@stevecaran1149 I just measured and sure enough it is 13.0 oz on my scale.
