- Simone Biles is the first person in history to perform a double-double dismount on the balance beam in competition. Watch her full beam routine from U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Mo. part of Team USA Champions Series presented by Xfinity.
At this point she is the Michael Jordan of Gymnastics...... She is only competing with herself... The fact that she keeps improving and never settling is what makes her great. Even though she is already the best women's gymnast in the world , she always strive for better. WOW!!!! That dismount was past spectacular....

She wanted to do the triple double on the beam too, but they said no. The thinking was that too many other gymnasts would try to add it to their programs and get hurt 🙄

I wish the media wasn’t allowed to view their practice sessions. Imagine how much more exciting this would have been if everybody wasn’t expecting this.
But she's not the first person do to it in practice. The achievement is specifically for in-competition. Landing it in competition *IS* the exciting part.
The moves are known I believe by the judges and everyone already ahead of the competition. The greatness comes when it's executed incredibly like Simone did.

simone posted her training this stuff to instagram in advance so that everyone knew she'd be competing these skills. and of course you want to built the anticipation. makes no sense to surprise.
Some sports had that effect years ago. Swimming was that way prior to Phelps. Like when Van Den Hoogenband came out to beat Thorpe in Sydney. If you knew about his times, you knew he had a big chance. For most, though, he was the guy who came out of nowhere to go gold, gold, bronze in the 200, 100 and 50m. By Athens, the announcers were saying he was going to toy with the 100m field, and he got gold, again. Made for great drama in Sydney.
This is where Simone really is setting herself apart from the rest of the pack. She's continuing to grow and innovate in the sport. Everyone else, however good they are, are still chasing her.
I agree but I still think that Sanne Wevers gold on beam in Rio was the most inspiring of them all. It's not only about skill but also style and Sanne just nailed that one.

I have a suspicion her size helps her alot. 4 foot 8 with rather short limbs seems like it would translate into faster rotations and preservation of energy. Closer to the center of mass you can get the better i would think??

Daniel Tsen to put it in perspective - a double double tucked is one of the hardest skills in the world on FLOOR. shes doing a double double tucked in about half the air space she usually has when she does it on floor. its unreal.

Yes! I wish NBC used him more. I'm blanking on his name, but he's a former gymnast himself, so he has a genuine understanding of just what it is Simone is accomplishing.

It may sound corny but I feel so lucky I've gotten to watch Simone over the years. She amazes me every single time I watch her. What a great role model our young athletes have. 👏
Way to go Simone. I had to share this with my 10 year old gymnast niece. Her strongpoint is the beams and I knew she’d love this.

After seeing this, the Olympic Committee for the next games decided to change the design of the gold medal in this event to have Simone's portrait engraved into it because it's inconceivable anyone else will win it.

@@oj6912 yet kara kara is far from simone level .this was just nationals .world's and Olympics would be very different .Simone plans on adding back her half fuck in her beam for world's and for the Olympics so I'm sure kara would not stand a chance as usual
Simone has not won a major title on beam since 2015 and was only bronze at both the 2016 Olympics and 2018 worlds. I do think she has a good shot to win gold with her new dismount, but she is still in no way unbeatable on beam like she is on floor, vault, or the All Around, especialy as she can be inconsistent and prone to mistakes.
Well lets wish her the best for all of her hard work and hope that she conquers the beam performance in 2020 this time. This was incredibly difficult and great to watch!!

Her continuing to top herself will encourage others to do the same which will elevate the sport to new levels. She really is leading a new era of gymnastics.

The commentator meant the SMILE she had at the end just made everything a bit more palatable.
Tim Daggett said that comment about "more palatable" because he knows that Simone Biles is a perfectionist and had been working on improving her beam for this year. Throughout the routine, Simone had little wobbles (which cause deductions in score). He is saying that for Simone, and according to the standards she sets for herself, that routine will be more "likable" or "palatable" for Simone's self-imposed standards because of the near perfect dismount at the end, whereas the start of the routine had several balance checks.

Not quite. People are catching up. Trinity Thomas did the Biles on floor night one. The only other woman to do it in competition. Plus Suni Lee was only 1.8 behind Simone in D score and she is just coming up from juniors so she will get stronger too. It's great to see her pushing all of womens gymnastics
