Too bad you did not ask him about the Dobro he smashed when Dylan was stuck after many days and did not like anything they had done. Danny finally picked up a Dobro and smashed it. A girl serving drinks ran from the room and started crying, everyone froze. But Dylan came back and finally cut a track he liked! This shows the brilliance of Lanois. He rebooted the session, cleared out the negative energy and showed Dylan he was not intimidated by him. They had no trouble after that!

I wouldn’t say greatest. I mean, highway 61, blonde on blonde, blood on the tracks, all are mammoth epic albums. But I’d easily say it’s his best 21st century album (I think it was 99 but close enough) although Rough and Rowdy Ways has been on NON STOP since it came out, a really phenomenal album

Love the Opening Harp Lick on "Man in the Long Black Coat" it really sets the stage of the dark and foreboding "man" who is so full of "Dust" that is all over the Man in the Long Black Coat. The Dust of Death. He is nocturnal, does his work in the shadows, never leaves "a word of goodbye, not even a note." And the reality is "There are no mistakes in life.....some people say" ..... "And its true sometimes.... You can see it that way." Wow! What a lyric. This is American Calvinism, but how can it be true only "sometimes?" To make sense, doesn't it have to be true all the time? Not if your "a dream twister." That is part of the mystery of this "man." He comes into town, and your woman ends up gone with him. He has a face like a mask. And she gave her heart to the man in the Long Black Coat. She never said nothing, there was nothing she wrote.... It doesn't make any sense, but when you understand who this "man" is well then maybe. I'm here, after reading the chapter Bob wrote about making this album, to hear Lanois' viewpoint on it.
As Bob called the songs as, a handful of lyrics he'd written awhile ago, I think a few of them tell the tale of emotions written down, but not sorted out yet.
I think Bob was better at writing his emotions on paper, than he may have been at expressing them, to the person who caused them.
This album was therapy. Bob was more comfortable hiding them behind recording a new album, not sitting with only a "therapist", on the porch, pouring his heart out in the words he brought.
Lanois seems a sensitive sort, who found himself with an unwilling "patient".
Hats off to you, Mr Lanois, for getting Bob through it.
    You are a gentleman.

I never really knew about Daniel Lanois until recently. He's obviously an intelligent guy and a fantastic conduit for musical art, whether it's his own songs or someone else's. Youtubing his name yields a wide ranging assortment of his work from a rootsy performance with Trixie Whitely on the Tiny Desk series to his own song Lotta Love To Give to his work on the U2 album, Achtung.Baby. I'm amazed at how clearly he seems to design, craft and bring out the best of a tune or album.

Daniel Lanois, in addition to being one of the world's leading producers, is also I think a great "Music Therapist"...he arranges the right city, right building, right equipment, right musicians, right time of day, right approach...in Dylan's case, I think he took Bob deeper into self-reflection than he'd ever gone before....an example? "What Good Am I?" Oh Mercy is one of the greatest Dylan records ever made.

Interesting, but when dealing with Dylan, he does what he does, then moves on. It's hard to explain him when that record, that moment is passed. He's already gone past it. There are 100's of versions of his songs. Some 50 of them, done by him. They happen, get recorded, then he hears it another way and that day, that time, he plays it that way. We are all just glad the stars crossed and he put it down and we get to hear it. Thanks Bob.

In some ways I think that "Oh Mercy " is in some ways a stronger album than "Time out of mind". At that point in Dylan's career "Oh Mercy " was definitely Bob's strongest work in years. When "Time out of mind" was released I was in my late thirties. When Bob recorded that album, he was in his mid fifties. Now that I'm in my late fifties, I understand it in a whole new way. A sence of resignation, world weariness.

U2 was an average new wave band on their first two albums but with War they made one of the best albums ever made. They made three other masterpieces and all of those involved Lanois and Eno. I think Dylan's biggest mistake of recent has been that he releases albums too often. Like Together Through Life and Tempest for example. There are tracks on there that should have been cut off and they could've been combined into one GREAT album instead of two "meh" albums.
Don't get me wrong, I love Dylan, but I wish he'd rely more on quality over quantity.

this is after many years of Dylan awe becoming one of my favorite records by Dylan, and though I could not get behind it when I heard Dylan claim that his new music is his best music, I am coming around to that opinion myself albeit within a very broadminded and inclusive purview

I had a Dylan blues dancing band in nor cal and we mostly did later numbers. I concur with the BoB that his later music is his best.

I agree that O Mercy is better than Time Out if Mind. Atmospherically it’s as good as it gets.

Did Bob not think Daniel Lanois did a crap job as producer? If I remember correctly he dedicated the latter half of his book Chronicals to deconstructing almost every aspect of this album.

Dylan can’t « comeback » because he only knows how to move forward. As has been shown, over and over, not everyone is able to follow but that never stops him.

Dylan may have "moved on" musically to some degree. And, people might evaluate Oh, Mercy! based on its "excellent musical quality." But, that is completely secondary to who Bob Dylan is and what he is always telling us. That is that we are spiritual creatures first just walking around in skin. What endures is our spirit for eternity. So, as Dylan sings, "you gonna serve somebody. It might be the Devil and it might be the Lord. But, you're going to serve somebody." Like all of us, Bob Dylan is not perfect. However, Bob Dylan made the choice to follow the perfect man-Jesus Christ. He serves Christ and all other wise people also chose Christ as He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. No one comes to the Father except through the Son. Chose today whom you will serve.

Good album, but I have no idea why they didn't include "Most of the Time" or "Dignity" on the record.

Putting the vocal down before the drums is a hard thing to do , because everything usually follows the drum beat

It's a great album. I wish every album that followed was produced by Lanois. L&T is the only other good one he put out since.

For me the man in the long black coat is the devil, wonder what Bob was thinking or was it a memory of a traumatic avent
Not that I care that much, the song is just so powerfull.

Daniel Lanois should be honoured, maybe he is cajun, maybe he is Acadien, but he is Canadian menshe, should be Order of Canada, or would that not be cool for a modest guy

I think he's a little too kind to Dylan. Reading Chronicles, it sounds like it was war between Lanois and Dylan, with Dylan being unwilling or unable to trust Lanois's judgement.

Robert Coates yeah in the book it seemed like Dylan felt Lanois didn't really care about each take and thought most takes were fine, but Bob refused to just accept the sound coming out and practiced versions nonstop to get what he visioned.I think Lanois got annoyed with Bob taking a while trying to find the sound he was looking for

Oh Mercy is good... but certainly not better than 1983's Infidels , imo. Bob likes playing with people.. not just tape recorders.

What the hell is the wrong with this interview?? This is 3rd I’ve seen of him speaking to DL young and U2 were others and he’s really rude in all of them and I don’t get why DL stays there and puts up with it? If I was speaking to someone and after I’d said something they look down to read what to say to me and just mumble ‘yeah yeah right ‘ after I answer they would be being extra polite for the rest of there lives!.... coz they’d have to be or no one would push them around in there chair!
