I first saw him on NPR with Trixey Whitely. I was blown away by his playing...and how he glued himself so immersively to accompanying her. Never seen such focus before.
Daniel Lanois has worked with Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, U2, Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan, The Neville Brothers, Ron Sexsmith, Emmy Lou Harris, Willy Nelson, Sinned O'Conner, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Leonard Cohen. The man is a walking history of modern music.
Thank God for people like Daniel Lanois. In today's world of profit driven 'arts' he is a breath of fresh air. I love all of his music and value/share his opinions about life and art.
December 23, 1986 saw Daniel debut his Acadie album at a small club in Hamilton on Barton street. One of the most memorable nights of my life and have followed him ever since then.
I have loved Daniels work as a musician and producer, Nevill Brothers for me their best LP Yellow Moon. Then Dylan's great fifth come- back LP, and Emilou. We were lucky enough to see the tour Emilou did to promote the 'Wrecking ball' album. Willie Nelson 'Teatro' CD. Daniel makes GREAT music himself but his audio senses as a producer make other artists sound GREAT. Love your art Mr Lanois.

How about Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy!" Langois had his ideas all over it. Just listen to the studio version of "The Man In The Long Black Coat" The atmosphere in that song (and the whole album) is incredible and it's all because of Langois. I love Daniel's album "La Cadie" (also fantastic atmosphere).

When I say "ARTIST" , this man EMBODIED that very word , head to toe. Amazing guitar player, songwriter , IMO:singer etc. Sadly he passed away in early 2K's. Lanois produced his first album, which is very, very good - and his most successful for his short career. Ironically, Chris Whitley was more about being an artist than a success and forewent any plans to record for a major label or w/ a major producer after that album. I highly recommend checking out Chris Whitley's first 5 albums - in succession ...... amazing work.

Nowadays most DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations) can take audio and render it as MIDI. Once on a MIDI track, you could easily take any sound and reprogram it to do as he mentioned. His method was a little more old school, and he could likely have the same results in a quarter of the time. The most recent example (in a Mac environment) that I have been fooling around with is Logic Pro X. Alternatively, you could sample the drum kick into a sampler (many powerful programs to choose from) and manipulate the pitch by retuning it in the samples. Then you could play various touch pads or keyboard keys, which have their own pitch per key assigned. Cheers!
I use a bus of the kick drum track to a sound generator in pro tools and then make that into an 808 and you can do that as many times as you want for each pitch

Dominic Girard is the perfect interviewer for the delicate understating of Lanois' artistry. He knows how to listen, and never once allows his own ego to intrude on Lanois' introspective revelations. He, like Gerald Moore, is the perfect accompanist. This is a capital interview.
Well said - music was never a background as far as I'm concerned - when I'm listening to music, then I'm 100% dedicated to it. I also never work with music in my ears, otherwise I can't focus on my work as I focus on music more.
