      It's not underrated. It's just one more Paul W.S. Anderson "too lazy to make it good" movie. Every movie he made is a wasted opportunity and it's a damn shame the guy can't turn an interesting premise into an effective good movie or play out an idea to its true potential. This could have been really good if Anderson hadn't cut corners to make it really dumb.

      I stopped watching him a long time ago, but for whatever reason after seeing the Event Horizon and cringing hard enough to murder a puppy if it was around, I saw his review. He was spot on in every possible aspect. So were the Ebert and Siskel. It's a really bad Hollywood shlock from the middle onward.

    Event Horizon is pretty much the only horror movie from the 1990's that actually scared/disturbed me. What it perhaps lacks in originality, it certainly makes up for in creating an atmosphere of foreboding and dread, and the flash scenes of "Hell" are still as horrific as when I first saw them in the cinema. Would love to see a version with the deleted footage restored.

      Don't be, Sam Neil and Laurence Fishburne have repeatedly said it was one of their favorite movies to film in their career's. They were both very proud of it, it was just butchered in editing and that's why most people hated it. I mean the version we got was not the version that should have come out. Thank the studios for that bullshit once again.

    Dr. Weir is clearly under the influence of something else, and he's totally conflicted. That's why he went back and forth for a time before totally being taken over. I didn't think there was any question regarding what was going on with him. Possession is a slow process. It's similar to the transformation of Regan in The Exorcist. As for the film itself, it's strange how often I've revisited this film, despite some of the flaws. Make no mistake, this is one of the scariest films ever made, but it's a subtle creepiness. The film does what the best horror films do by allowing us to face our fears and, if we are lucky, overcome them. It is incredibly disturbing but doesn't lose its humanity or interest in the wellbeing of the crew. The characters are incredibly likable, and I too would love to see a cut where we see more of them. I actually cared for their well being! I'd give it 4 out of 5, and would love to see the directors cut as a special feature, even if it's VHS quality .

    • @RaderizDorret
      @RaderizDorret 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And this movie surpasses Dead Space by a long margin. Event Horizon has more genuine "get inside your head" horror than Dead Space which is basically a string of jump-scares that wear old fast.

    • @RaderizDorret
      @RaderizDorret 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      *****
      Once I saw that the jump scares could be predicted by the size and color of the vents, I wasn't as afraid.Also, the enemies in Dead Space were basically monsters you can fight. I don't fear anything I can fight and kill as a rule. An enemy like the ship in Event Horizon or the ghost in Poltergeist would have me hauling ass outta there since I can't punch/stab/shoot a ghost.

      Indeed; Dead Space had everything that made the movie frightening but none of the wit or patience to pull it off. Then there was Dead Space 2....which is, what Yahtzee described as, 'I kid bashing pots and pans and going 'Look at me! Am I scary yet?'" within the first three minutes of the game

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dead Space I is great, though in the same way EH is like a haunted house attraction in space, I thought the limb cutting aspect of the first game was a bit contrived. DSII starts to lose the plot and become action-centric, and by III it's just a gory action game. The cliff hanger at the end of III was interesting though...a metabiological evil force moving through the universe that consumes civilizations, almost like Katamari Damacy from hell...consider me intrigued for another follow-up.

    The scene where Sam Neil uses a pencil to push through a folded sheet of paper to describe how wormhole technology would work is a truly lasting contribution this film made to the Public's understanding of deep-space travel science.
    Whenever Millenials describe the possibilities of folding pace that pencil-through-paper bit is the standard illustration.

    When I broke up with my first serious girlfriend I was absolutely bereft. ITV2 (I think) were showing Event Horizon in their late slot, and at this point of terrible UK digital channels they would often show the same movie in that slot for ages. I don't know why I watched it so many times - I was pretty depressed at that point - but for about a fortnight I would drink my way through an 8-pack of beers and watch Event Horizon, then watch half of it again on the +1 channel till I passed out on the sofa. To begin with being fucking freaked out stopped me dwelling on a broken heart, and after a while it stopped being scary and started being hilarious. I wouldn't say it got me through the breakup but it helped.

    I think the problem is in the conception of the film. Or more at expectations of the viewer himself. For me, its 9/10 movie. Its not horror, its not classic sci-fi, its dark story from space. Whenever you try to put it in the box, you get short somewhere, but in fact, this is absolutely enjoyable movie. You can just sit down and watch and i guarantee you, its catchy. Its like eating peanuts. And after some time, you will watch it again and it will entertain you great as it did for the first time. So what do you expect from the movie? Do you need it to be boxable or do you want to enjoy it on max? I'm not critic, i'm a fan.

      The key issue with the film was the development of the plot... It started out superbly, and then deteriorated, helped by the poor acting of Sam Neill. If one takes Mr. Neill out of the picture -- for the film had numerous good actors, as well as special effects -- and change and beef up the plot... you would have something.
      Actually... imo... I believe the recent "Interstellar" has built upon "Event Horizon". In the prior film, a better movie... I was actually waiting for M. M. to say, after he entered the Black Hole, "My God... I ca't get out... I can never get out. So this is Hell...? All by myself for an eternity?"
      [An Interstellar II could have resolved the situation... and perhaps will anyway. (Btw. I thought _Interstellar_ was a little slow moving at times, too.).]
      -----------------------------------------------
      It takes a definite desire, and penchant, on both the writers and director, to do a horror film. "Event Horizon" tried to be, but was not, due to lack of substantive writing, and Mr. Neill. ... "Interstellar" very well could have been, was a far better film, but the writers and director did not want to take it in a direction they very well could have. And seeing how close they were, one wonders, why not?

    I love this movie. A perfectly scaled production, an incredible cast, awesome visuals and a really, really good screen play. A complete movie with no need for any sequels or prequels, a proper stand alone blend of scifi, horror, art house and even a touch of b-movie heart & soul. It's one of those movies that becomes perfect through its humble imperfections.

    I think the characters acting out of the norm and then going back to normal rapidly works and makes total sense. They are being tormented by a 'spirit' from a universe with no rules that is made of pure chaos. In that context the rapid shifts make complete sense. Sure, if there was in fact almost 30 minutes cut from the movie things probably would have been explained. But again, they are being plagued by pure chaos and ruination. It doesn't need rhyme or reason... is just does.

    One of my friends worked on the effects team for Event Horizon and said the first cut of the film was truly terrifying with a lot more graphic scenes in the Hell sequence with the original crew. It also had more back story for Weir's character to do with his wife but the film was incredibly long. It's one of my favourite films and I'm hoping a copy of that first edit can be wound someday.

    saw half of this movie in theaters with my Grandma of all people.. Being a ADHD child, I never bothered to pay attention to the rating assigned at the end of the trailer on TV, and just figured it was another sci fi action flick. Grandma wanted to see a film and I suggested this one. About half way through, both of us are super unconformable. One of us is scared, and the other is embarrassed for sitting through such a violent hell themed movie with their deeply religious grandmother. My exact words were, "do you want to leave? Lets leave, this is a crazy movie!" and we both took the theatre exit to the parking lot.

    I agree that the film needs more dialogue, on the other hand, Sam Neil's behavior is also exciting, because the audience is amazed at what he is. I think the movie is very good, and proves that Paul Anderson is a good director. It is a pity that he is not, nowadays , very ambitious, but to focus on the Resident Evil things.

    Fun fact about the film and it’s creation. It was as primarily inspired by Warhammer 40,000 by the creator of the films own admission.
    Particularly (while he personally never gave details) the inspiration comes from what happens when the Gellar Fields(a type of protection shield) fail when travel through the Warp(aka *Literal* Hell on steroids and the *only* means humanity has of Interstellar travel).
    And it is so much like 40k that some see it as a 40k prequel when humans first invented the Warp drive, but didn’t invent Gellar Fields yet, and this was what prompted their invention.

    I loved this film. I'm always seeing new things in it. For instance, I didn't realize for years that after Weir comes back after being sucked in to space, all of the cuts and wounds covering him are actually ''hell'' symbols (some you see earlier on around the ship). I initially thought they were just random injuries from the ship piecing back together. Also, (and i dunno if it was intentional), early on, during Weir's nightmare, when he turns his wife around in the chair, the monitor behind her has eyes on it. I think they are stickers, but when I first noticed it, it freaked me out big time!! I've heard there is an Event Horizon TV show in the works?! And, being a huge Warhammer 40K fan, this film, to me, is now part of the 40K Universe. If you don't know, look up Event Horizon 40K theory.
