Once again if flim is scary thats down to person view so you cant say a flim isnt scary anymore than saying all French people eat onions i mean thats like one mans view and everyones different and i find the fog very scary to a wide range of people i mean its zombies in the mist, Saying you can out run zomnies is silly i mean if it was real you would have a heart attack if you had to out run death i mean that is a fear, Your making the mistake thinking you can out run dudes but you cant run when your having a panic attack coz you got dead dudes after you i mean you cant out run fog either you would be surrounded you in 2 minutes, Truth is a slow death is far worse than a fast one i mean whats more scary a bullet in head fast or being tied to a train track for 2 hours waiting for death

My husband and I saw this at the theater. He really didn't want to go because scary movies weren't his thing but he went. As the movie went along he became more and more uneasy and he was thrilled when it was over. I joked with him being such a scaredy cat. We saw an evening show and by the time we came out it was dark. We lived in a pretty rural area about 20 miles from the theater. A couple miles after we started home we were hitting patchy fog. FOG! Now I was uneasy. The further we went the thicker it got. By the time we pulled in the drive it was pea soup. And I am freaking out! Couldn't move. My poor husband threw me over his shoulder and that was that. We never ever joked about scaredy cats again.

Rather surprised that not only John Carpenter didn't like it, but that critics didnt either. I think it is an excellent, classic ghost story. Amazing music, setup, and plot device of the magical fog. It ties back into history, greed and "sins of the father" aspects. What is not to like? Even starts with the amazing Houseman! Love this film.

Its one of those movies where the more I watch it, the more I start to appreciate it. Despite some flaws in it, it still has a great atmosphere, soundtrack and creepy opening. Trust me, when you start exploring other shitty horror films out there that no one talks about, you will put The Fog on a higher level. And fuck the remake.

I love The Fog, it's sad that Carpenter isn't all that happy with the film, because I think it's very effective and creepy. It gets under your skin rather than outright terrify you or make you jump. It's a very simple story but one that's really well told, has the exact right atmosphere and the score compliments it all perfectly.
I'd absolutely be scared of a fog bank that seems to have intelligence and is actively chasing you down the street...especially when you know that there's something nasty in there that's going to brutally stab the shit out of your eyes.

Many times, an artist in any medium is the most critical of what everyone else views as a masterpiece! Artists are very hard on themselves. John Carpenter is no exception there. It's hard for him to see what we all love so much about this film! I am glad it founds its feet as the years have gone by and that so many people appreciate it now. Back in the day, it always annoyed me that it fell below the radar and was rated as average. I would share the film with everyone I knew through the years. It's great to see it FINALLY be so appreciated!

For a short time, I chatted with John about Point Reyes. His house there burned down in the Mount Vision fire. I lived on the B ranch just a short mile from the lighthouse. The area this was filmed in, is my favorite place on earth. John was gracious and I will never forget his kindness in taking the time to chat with me about the Fog and Big Trouble in little China.

I like the fog for all its flaws. The slow pacing makes it enjoyable to watch when you just want to relax and be 'mildly scared, after a hard day at the office. After weighing the pros and cons, I still enjoy this film. One of my favorites from Carpenter and crew. It's setting and atmosphere is just so well done. Antonio Bay reflects the ideal place to settle down (at least in my opinion). A small town community, distant from the stress of the big city. Creating a sense of peace. Which makes it all the more impactful when the fog hits.
I really do love these videos, Oliver. Seeing people talk about John Carpenter's films decades later gives much hope to aspiring indie filmmakers like myself. Keep up the amazing work :)

Strangely, when I feel nostalgic, I come to watch The Fog because of its pacing, the scenery, the times gone with no social media yet more social interaction. I too realized I am no big city person and as I was born on a coastal town and moved away, I miss the salty, breezy air and that mellow pace that only coastal towns have.

I saw this as a very young kid when it came out on HBO, and it scared the absolute shit out of me. I personally think it's criminally underrated, one of Carpenter's best and his scariest film, both the film and it's soundtrack. It is very subdued, all about atmosphere (the synthesizer score is absolutely CRUCIAL, probably the main element of the film).

This is one of my favorite horror movies of all time! I'm so glad you did this video! I actually think the slow, atmospheric build is one of its selling points. The movie isn't about any one particular character, but rather a haunted town, so it takes the time to introduce the town, the locations, the people, and all the foreshadowing that something terrible is coming. It's a perfect campfire story. :D

I don't think the fog was going for the direct descendants of the original conspirators, they just wanted ANY 6 from the town (which is quite disappointing, people like well-defined rules in horrors). When the priest says that he's the descendant of the original priest, that was just a double whammy for Blake.
The only thing that bothered me is how small scale the town "party" was, it just looks like a bunch of extras thrown in there last minute and you never get a sense of local community like, for example, Jaws achieved.
It's a great at atmospheric horror though.

When I attended middle school back in the early 1980s in Yorkshire, UK an English teacher ran movie nights every Wednesday. Unbelievably he had convinced the school to buy a 35mm cinema projector and would actually hire proper film prints. Movies were shown in the school hall and it was always packed with about 300 excitable kids. That said, he seemed a bit vague on what should and shouldn't be shown to children of our ages which is why, at 11 years old, I saw The Fog on the big screen - my first horror/supernatural film experience. It scared the life out of me and I don't think I slept right for a week afterward. Numerous complaints and concerns from parents flooded the school the day after it was shown as children across Mirfield (the town where I lived) were left traumatised by the experience. So, as a result, the film has always stayed with me and I think even to this day it has my all-time favourite movie ending. Decades later I visited the area North of San Francisco where a lot of the exteriors were shot - the lighthouse, some of the town, the beach, etc. It genuinely feels quite eerie there, mostly due to the wind that whistles across the landscape from the Pacific ocean. I actually found a piece of driftwood on the beach and brought it home with me a souvenir. I'm not sure if that was the best idea.

The atmosphere in The Fog is just amazing. Love the radio station, the great music, and spectacular photography. Yes, the underlining story is a bit simple, but I get sucked into that world every time I watch it. For my money, Carpenter didn’t need to add the gore and close-ups, though. I understand it to satisfy his contemporary audience, but the film functions better as a mood piece, and as such, the fog being somewhat more ambiguous would work. The end shots of the pirates in the church is great, though, and the final shot is just stellar!

This film scared the crap out of me as a kid when I saw it on tv, lol, and I still hold a sneaking respect for it today. But yes, it has it's problems. The towns population quickly seems to reduce to about a dozen people as the fog rolls in, why do they go after everyone they meet when they state they only want the descendants of the original six people who caused their ship to crash, why is there a huge cross made of pure gold, LOL. I mean to make that all the gold that had been on the ship when it crashed would have had to be melted down and used so none left to spend on building the town. As for why they went after Stevie ... I always figured it was because she owned the lighthouse and that was what had caused their ship to crash on the rocks 100 years ago. They were taking revenge on it and whoever was there.

    Carpenter's 'The Fog' is brilliant!
I love everything about it -- especially the way the film takes it's time, so you get a real sense of being there in Antonio Bay as things begin to get spooky.
Spooky story and atmospheric setting means you get drawn into the film in the very best way. Ending scene is fantastic!

  • @williamr3840
    @williamr3840 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Problem with your review is in that it is very much a retrospective look at a film that came out in another time altogether (1980). I can assure you that, as a kid, watching this back then, it was scary -- and great fun! The slow pacing of the movie is something common to most movies of its time, but it serves really well to give the watcher a very real sense of being with the characters in Antonio Bay as things start to get weird. Overall, the atmosphere created and the way it transports the watcher into the story is quite superb. Story, direction, visuals, characters, music, atmosphere... A very special film! :0)

Totally agree. I would have been late teens when I first saw it and the film stuck with me ever since. Never a fan of the Halloween films, and similar i.e. blank teens/characters getting slaughtered in various situations. The Fog, however, gave time to develop the principle characters, and so we care about them. For character development, look no further than The Thing. Those characters are absolute bang on. I have wintered at an Antarctic station, for over 2 years straight, and I worked with those characters 😂😂 Despite my being the Radio Op/IT engineer, I always fancied myself as MacReady 🤣🤣 As you say though, its a retrospective view, films of that era were slower paced, audiences had much greater attention spans back then !

I love The Fog and always have, ever since I first saw it when it premiered on TV way WAY back in 1981 or so. Well, I was even fascinated by it when it was in my brother's Fangoria magazine, and then when it finally came to theaters. I owned the novelization and saw the trailers and ads on TV. I was just a little too young to see it in theaters, though. I know it isn't the majority consensus, but as much as I love Halloween, I like The Fog better. You just can't beat a John Carpenter oldie!!!!
Anyhow, I really enjoyed your retrospective video. It was a great review with a lot of interesting facts present, even though I as a long-time fan already knew most of it, LOL! One correction, though. The occupants of the fog are NOT pirates. They are what one would call revenants, visible ghosts or animated corpses that have returned to haunt the living. They are lepers who were victims of a crime, not pirates!
    Thanks for the fun video!

John Carpenter's The Fog is a classic ghost story and a fantastic film.
With some basic storytelling, a creepy atmosphere and great cinematography, Carpenter created one the best straight-up horror films ever made.
The fact that we only see Blake and his pirate band in silhouette adds to the horror and mystery, something the mediocre 'remake' didn't understand.

@@OliverHarper I think the pirate/ghosts killing random people in the movie is very plausible! These are ghosts, spirits with a high level of power and vengeance in the movie. Because of this, I think that anyone, a friend or outsider (who could possibly help) would have posed a threat to the pirate/ghost's vengeance on the town and its descendants. ( I saw the movie at the Drive-in, when it first came out, Great and Scary movie then!) Thanks.

*THE FOG* (1980) is my all-time favorite film of the horror genre. The remake was...well, I didn't care much for it, but it had some pretty intense scenes that echoed the original film. I think my favorite part of the 2005 remake was the scene where Andy is in his room with the swirling fog trying to break into his room, which brought me back to the 1980 film. The plot twist ending was strange, though I won't spoil it for other people as to what made it strange for me.
In the early or mid-1980s, I was told there was going to be a direct sequel to the 1980 film. It was to be called *Return Of THE FOG* and it was supposed to start where the 1980 film left off. Unfortunately, because *THE FOG* wasn't the big success that *HALLOWEEN* was, the sequel never left the cutting room floor. I wonder if the 2005 remake was inspired by the sequel that never made it? To this day, I've always wondered what the never-to-be sequel to the original 1980 film would have been like. Would it have been scarier? Gorier? More intense? Who knows?
Now for the thing that bothers me in regards to both films --- the 1980 original and the 2005 remake. Their MPAA ratings versus the content shown. *THE FOG* (1980) is rated R for no real reason at all. It's scary, sure, but it's really not all that violent. There's no nudity, sex, or gore (unless you count the two-second shot of the so-called "worm face" ghost) and language is infrequent. The most violent part of this film is the death scene of the three fishermen on the Seagrass.
In contrast, *THE FOG* (2005) is rated PG-13 and contains far more violence and gore than the original film, not to mention some sexuality (remember the "shower" scene with Tom Welling and Maggie Grace?) and some highly disturbing moments. How is the 1980 film rated R when the 2005 PG-13 remake contains more intense content?
Yes, I know the PG-13 rating wasn't made when the original film was released, but *JAWS* (1975), *POLTERGEIST* (1982), *RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK* (1981), *TEMPLE OF DOOM* (1984), *GREMLINS* (1984), and several other films are given PG ratings and contain far more graphic content than *THE FOG* (1980). So, why aren't those other films rated R?

Watched it last night. Felt like it was taking its time perfectly for a long while, but then suddenly the third act crept up on me. I was also thinking Elizabeth's name tied to the ship's, as well as her saying that strange things/bad luck seemed to have followed her around all her life would have something to do with her either having to be someone who would die to the curse, or, that she might be immune to it. The whole atmosphere of the town was great, and I liked the dialogue. Just felt like it ended abruptly, and the fake-out with Father Malone's fate didn't make any sense to me.

Carpenter's The Fog is in my strong opinion the greatest horror movie ever made. It is horror perfection. The storyline is absolutely engrossing, the movie completely slimed in atmosphere. The look of the film is remarkable, the acting stellar and the cinematography simply delicious. This film should be widely hailed as the holy grail of horror movies in this lifelong horror fan's opinion.

I love The Fog for its creepy atmosphere, eerie music, beautiful cinematography by Dean Cundey, and excellent direction by John Carpenter. I only ever had two problems with it. One, the film feels more like three separate stories and characters - Stevie Wayne, Nick Castle, and Father Malone - that never really intersect or come together in a satisfying way rather than one complete story. Two, the “six must die" plotline does create some lapses in story logic regarding the arbitrary nature of the killings, while Father Malone seems to be a deliberate target. Other than that, I loved it.

The pacing is near perfect. The atmosphere is top notch. The music score is chilling and foreboding, one of Carpenter’s best IMO. The cinematography is awesome.
The Fog is definitely deserving of it’s cult movie status and more.
The novelization adds much more in-depth to the story and characters. It also explains the importance of why The Fog went after the people it did.
