I take it Robocop is your favorite action movie Oliver? You did say it's the best movie of the 80's which many consider to be the golden age of action. Great review by the way.
The ending, when the old man screams "Dick, you are fired!!!" and then directive 4 instantly disappears allowing robo to shoot, is definitely my favorite scene, one of the most clever endings I remember

Easily one of the best films of the 80's. It's almost perfect. The action, the drama, the villains....everything. You really felt sorry for Robocop as he tried to restore the memories of his past life. "I can feel them.....but I can't remember them." That line brought tears to my eyes. Also that little glimpse of his eye during the fight with ED-209 was so powerful. It showed that deep inside of all that armor, his human side wanted to break. If this film is not in your top 10 greatest action films list, then I feel sorry for you. Good job, Oliver. Cheers!
The scene where he finds out where he used to live was very sad. When he walked through the house, he had flashbacks of his previous life such as taking family pictures for Halloween. It was one of the most heartbreaking scenes I've seen in a sci-fi film.

What a Film along with Road Warrior, Terminator, Predator and Die Hard, that top notch of what action cinema in the 80's can be when it's done right by Directors who are artists. The original Robocop is a fucking masterpiece. The Bad guys namely clarence, was one of the best bad guys i can remember in movies. all of clarence's gang members were great in their own way. even more, i can't say any of the actors in the film were bland. they each had their own thing going instead of being generic. the music was fucking epic. murphy's flash backs, facial expressions, and dialog really made you feel what it might be like waking up one day, realizing you had been murdered and resurrected as a machine. the special effects were amazing and in my opinion hold up even today aside from dick falling out the window. the stop motion of ed-209 was perfect and made it look even more menacing than it otherwise would have been in cg. Dog Face Soldier dude! I got my ps1 at the Toys R Us that was very close to the mall, I’ll never forget!! It was 1996, I was 13 and I wanted Resident Evil more than anything else in the world
Your account of the story is incredible. This is by far one of the best sci fi films I've ever seen. It's very violent, yet The emotional aspect had me almost teary. music made me very emotional when I realised he had lost everything for gaining something superior. It just didn't seem worth it.
Back when I was a kid my mum wasn't too concerned with me watching mature action movies. I had an auntie living with us at the time and she used to love renting films, I saw cronenbergs The fly, commando and robocop to name a few during that time. As long as the movie didn't feature predominantly sexual content my mum wouldn't kick off much of a fuss so I was lucky in that respect. Being a kid though I was shocked by the level of violence in the movie, especially the scene of Murphy getting shot and I also found Clarence boddiger to be quite a scary character too lol. In fact to this day I still very much associate the actor with the character. When he was on that 70s show it did take me a while to get used to seeing him in such a different role, half the time I still expected him to pull out a shotgun and start killing people. Like you I hold this movie in such high regard that I was also really annoyed when they announced a remake as I still feel the movie holds up today. It's one of my top films of all time and it gets constant repeat viewings at my house. And just to throw it out there I very much enjoy robocop 2 as well but I really hate the 3rd. Really great review as always Oliver, I was very much looking forward to this one.
my parents were pretty strict on letting me watch 15 and 18 rated films as a kid. If I had a kid now I probably won't let him watch Robocop till he was 12 maybe. Some films given strong ratings in the past seem tame now but Robocop still deserves its rating. Big thanks for your feedback buddy.
@@OliverHarper My parents wouldn't let me watch this without an older cousin but even she was taken aback when we saw Murphy murdered by Clarence's gang. And she grew up in a tough neighborhood...
Many memories of this film, mostly of the unintentionally hilarious ITV edits to remove and replace the naught words: "You're gonna be a bad mothercrusher"
Another line from the ITV version is "Your clients a CRUM-bag, Your a CRUM-bag and CRUM-bags see the judge monday". I think its from the US tv version.
Even though the falling Dick Jones miniature looks totally unrealistic I've come to see something subliminal in it this last few years. I think it could be a visual representation of the characters inhuman, monstrous and fake 'true nature' finally being exposed, as he falls from power and grace. Plus how he was somehow still alive and lucidly screaming as he fell after being shot multiple times by Robocop further highlights all of these un-human like qualities. It's like Verhoeven and the effects team wanted to evoke the impression and image of a screaming and resisting devil decending to hell (and when taking the films religious iconography into account then everything about Dick Jones points towards him being a representation of the devil). That I've always noticed every unrealistic thing in the 'Dick Jones kill' scene yet have never had any issue with it tells me that it must've been working on some subconscious level.
I have to say I never thought about that scene like this. But when taking into account all that Jesus parables it actually makes sense. That scene really does look inhuman. Probably it is still partly a result of rushed shooting that resulted in not so great effect but when thinking about it in the way you presented...it seems much better. Thank you, sir:)
One day I went to the theater to watch RoboCop. I had no great expectations about the film. My goal was just have a good time And this film truly surprise me!!! RoboCop is amazing!!! For me, this film is a gem of Sci Fi cinema. RoboCop has great characters, fantastic scenes and a powerful sountrack. The direction of Paul Verhoeven was exceptional.
Great video. After I watched this movie a number of times, I realised that whenever Robocop is in a scene, there is a low frequency humming. I love that kind of character detail.
I love how decisive you are in your reviews. You have the guts to say which movies are your favorites without taking in the entire world's opinion first. Great review!!!
Solid job, Oliver. I never knew part of the film was filmed in Dallas until years later and I actually pass thru the area where Lewis and Murphy are talking and Murphy explains the twirling gun techniquie before they go after Boddicker's gang. It's now a bus terminal and I see this area every day on my way to work. I've also gone to City Hall where the OCP building was expanded in the film. It's amazing how this area has changed from those days.
I’ve watched several of your older reviews of 80’s action/sci-fi films & I’m still amazed at the production quality & introspective reviews you construct, especially this one from nearly a decade ago! You are extremely thorough with your commentary and technical breakdown of every movie you critique; You demonstrate an objective understanding of movie production, emotional feeling, & most importantly, the impact each of these movies have had on its audience in popular culture. Bravo!
God, I used to wear this movie out as a kid. I had this, the warriors, and the last Dragon on the same tape. Almost every weekend if I didnt rent any movies or games, that was one of the tapes that got heavy rotation. My fav parts of the film were the fake tv promos and news segments. I hope cyberpunk 2077 has many of those types of tropes.
Another excellent retro, Oliver! I really appreciate that you talk about soundtracks. So many newer films just don't have memorable ones anymore. In Robocop- that theme they play when he goes back to his old house... it always makes me a little misty-eyed. Poledouris really nails emotions when he wants to.
lol Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Excellent review as always! I rewatched this on BluRay the other night and it still holds up. If anything, it ages like a fine wine. Sure you can smell the 80's on it, but that just means it was a product of its time, and it was served well by it. Well done!
Great review. I loved robocop as a kid. Like you, I was moved by the death scene. My dad was a cop. this movie made me think about the idea that some people hate cops. And then I became a cop.
This is probably the best review of I've seen of Robocop. You sum it up well when you talk about how well made it is. It is a very tight and perfect film in all of its aspects.
10:51 _I think the only weak shot is the death of Dick Jones_ Yeah, there are too many problems with that puppet shot to successfully sell the illusion. It looks like something straight out of *Robot Chicken*. :-) On top of the problems you mentioned, the doll doesn't much resemble the actor, and the fabric of its miniature clothing looks and behaves too stiffly. Its weave fibers are not to scale and the suite itself (and the hair) don't flop violently in the wind like you would expect from a real falling person.
I wonder why they didn't just use blue screen and real actor to create the fall scene. If the actor was unwilling to do a little stunt work, they could have just showed the back of falling stuntmen.
i'm 36 and was watching this film from a very young age, probably too young to watch this and is my favourite film to date, its a masterpiece and will always hold a special place in my heart, iv'e seen it so many times, when i was a kid i was obsessed with robots and i used to watch this every morning before school. Thank you for making this video it's made me realise i'm not alone :)

One of if not my favourite Film of all time. Everything works, The actors are cast perfectly, The music is amazing, The action is second to none, it has heart, it has horror, it has humour, it makes you sad, angry and happy, the bad guys are really bad, the good guys are really good, the plot works, and its darn enjoyable from first to last minute. Id buy this for a Dollar everyday of the week, great review.
Yes, it needed a sequel - but instead of the sequel it deserved, we got GARBAGE. Pure stinking garbage. The sequel should have shown him getting more and more of a grip on his human side.
I watch this movie at least 2 or 3 times a year, I love the production values and attention to detail. From the amazing sound design, the practical effects, the cast, the characters, the memorable story, the grimy look of the environments, the great use of lighting, everything amazes me everytime. I don't think you've mentioned this btw, but did you miss to point out the influences of Judge Dredd ? Robocop is the kind've movie you don't remake or make sequels to, even though I do love the 2nd for almost the same reasons I love the 1st. I think that the universe of Robocop has potential for other stories to be told just like 2000AD, but not another Robocop. The existence of the newer one, doesn't ruin my childhood like so many other people say, because that's my childhood I carry it with me, and nothing can ruin that. You did an amazing job with the review Oliver. Thank you.

Without a doubt my favourite film of all time. So rewatchable and stands up brilliantly today. The cast and crew were all on point and added to the overall quality. The great thing was nearly all the villains were known for playing nice guy characters and are nice people in real life. Then played the best villains I've ever seen in such a movie. Great retrospective!

Hello Oliver. I am a big fan of your videos, and I have been binge-watching them over the last week. Your youtube channel, and Good Bad Flicks are two of my favorites to watch. Keep up the kickass work! Cheers!
I loved “RoboCop” as a kid. I thought it was totally awesome. What I mostly like about this movie is it does had some cool stuff in it. The special effects was really impressive, making the camera as RoboCop uses a themogragh mode. Some of the things I liked about it, one, Murphy actually kills armed thugs in a drug factory, which is my favorite scene, two, he went to his house to remember in the past when his wife and son sold it and moved on, and three, one thing that I really care about is his personality. Murphy removed his helmet and looked himself in a mirror, and I was like, “Oh, my god. Is that Murphy?” That was a sad moment. I was a little surprised when I realized that Murphy and RoboCop are the same person. His life was over, but he must get revenge for those who killed him. Now I liked the sequels 2 and 3, thought. Like I said, “RoboCop” is still one of my favorite movies as the best sci-fi flick on the 80s, 30 years later of my childhood. I enjoyed it a lot better than "The Terminator" and "Predator". Thumbs way up for me. RoboCop (1987) 4/4 👍👍👍👍

I went to college in Pittsburgh and spent a lot of time at that mall, pretending we were in dawn of the dead. I bought my ps1 there lol.
Film in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania & Dallas tx
Dog Face Soldier dude! I got my ps1 at the Toys R Us that was very close to the mall, I’ll never forget!! It was 1996, I was 13 and I wanted Resident Evil more than anything else in the world
The best movie!!! Peter Weller is great, acting is amazing! Better actor could find to play RoboCop!!!
Your account of the story is incredible. This is by far one of the best sci fi films I've ever seen. It's very violent, yet The emotional aspect had me almost teary. music made me very emotional when I realised he had lost everything for gaining something superior. It just didn't seem worth it.
Did you ever see the British TV version with the laughable censoring?..... "You're one bad mother crusher!" lol
I knew it, I wondered why the language was so different when I first saw it.
"Just gimme my friging phone call"
"Why me?!" "Why me?!" "Why me?!"
Once I even called him 'Air Head'.
Many memories of this film, mostly of the unintentionally hilarious ITV edits to remove and replace the naught words:
"You're gonna be a bad mothercrusher"
Yes I remember that!. They showed Robocop at 8pm!. The edit of Murphy's death was hilarious. They shoot at him once and say "damn im out of ammo"
Oliver Harper Here they are listed whatculture.com/film/robocop-10-hilarious-tv-edits-that-ruined-the-film.php
Another line from the ITV version is "Your clients a CRUM-bag, Your a CRUM-bag and CRUM-bags see the judge monday". I think its from the US tv version.
Don't forget the scene with the guy robbing the convenience store shouting "Why me?" repeatedly as he is shooting at Robocop.
Don't forget the classic "once I even called him airhead" while he's looking right into the mirror!
Possibly my favorite film of all time.
Such a good movie. And, by the way, nice review.
That I've always noticed every unrealistic thing in the 'Dick Jones kill' scene yet have never had any issue with it tells me that it must've been working on some subconscious level.
that's called "interpretation is better than the dream"
I have to say I never thought about that scene like this. But when taking into account all that Jesus parables it actually makes sense. That scene really does look inhuman. Probably it is still partly a result of rushed shooting that resulted in not so great effect but when thinking about it in the way you presented...it seems much better. Thank you, sir:)
Brilliant take, it's almost like his true demonic spirit was in full show as he was heading to hell
@WallKenshiro.....all this talk about subliminals makes me want to get something from The Dollar Store
Im so glad i was born in the mid 70s as 1980s were the golden era of movies
From 19:31 to the end man..... that music is so good, the feels and the tears especially the scenes you edited along side it. Great review!
I saw it in the theatre when I was 8 and saw the reboot in the theatre as well...guess which experience was way worse?
Guess they did it for the money. I’m sure the boys in the studio looked at each other and acknowledged: “Guys this is a fucking awful remake”
You sneaked into the theatre , right?
Russell Scott I love the original but I liked the reboot also
Russell Scott well if you saw the reboot i would imagine the original was amazing for you
I love how decisive you are in your reviews. You have the guts to say which movies are your favorites without taking in the entire world's opinion first. Great review!!!
I have to say this is the best Robocop review of the 1st film
Thanks very much Kyle!
This made me subscribe. Awesome Retrospective!! You do this very well! Looking forward to more like this.
Rudolf Menon Thank you very much! I hope you enjoy the many other retrospectives on my channel.
Bravo!
My favourite 80s GEM. Thanks for the review sir.
I saw it in the cinema in 1987 when I was 16 years old. Now in 2023, it's still my favourite movie.
best film ever made as far as im concerned
God, I used to wear this movie out as a kid. I had this, the warriors, and the last Dragon on the same tape. Almost every weekend if I didnt rent any movies or games, that was one of the tapes that got heavy rotation. My fav parts of the film were the fake tv promos and news segments. I hope cyberpunk 2077 has many of those types of tropes.
One of the best made films ever
"I can feel them... but I can't remember them." Made me shed a tear when I first watched the movie.
The ED-209 scared the crap outta me as a little kid. More than any horror movie monster as well.
Well done with the soundtrack overlay on the beginning montage. That shit was hard as nails!
Robocop, one of the absolute best movies EVER made.
They just got everything right with this one, even the music is fantastic.
I've always felt that stop motion works best for robotic characters, like Terminator and ED-209. Makes it more scary IMO.
lol Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
One of my Top Ten favorite movies for over twenty-five years. A sci-fi classic and an 80s classic. You can't go wrong with that.
Ive become a fan of your videos. Really good stuff. Thank you!

I'm glad you mentioned Bottin's work on Weller's face in this review. By far and away the best makeup effects in movie history.
This movie is a classic, one of my top favorites.
This is probably the best review of I've seen of Robocop. You sum it up well when you talk about how well made it is. It is a very tight and perfect film in all of its aspects.
10:51 _I think the only weak shot is the death of Dick Jones_
Yeah, there are too many problems with that puppet shot to successfully sell the illusion. It looks like something straight out of *Robot Chicken*. :-)
On top of the problems you mentioned, the doll doesn't much resemble the actor, and the fabric of its miniature clothing looks and behaves too stiffly.
Arthur Hakhverdian 10:43 I never thought about the chin strap.
Arthur Hakhverdian or just avoid that shot all together. Jones was shot 12 times, the filmmakers could’ve just cut away after he falls out the window
i'm 36 and was watching this film from a very young age, probably too young to watch this and is my favourite film to date, its a masterpiece and will always hold a special place in my heart, iv'e seen it so many times, when i was a kid i was obsessed with robots and i used to watch this every morning before school. Thank you for making this video it's made me realise i'm not alone :)
Oliver makes the best movie trailers, hands down!
@Olive Harper, hoping this this your name. Thank you for all these retrospective. Every movie you have touched on are all my favorite. As an aspiring writer, you're commentaries help me at many levels and layer. Thank You again.
Robocop is a classic. But the 2014 remake was crap.
Daniel Williamson dead or alive, you’re coming with me
I wouldn’t buy robocop 2014 for a dollar
Be fair. It was better the expected.
It was better than 3.

Love Robocop so much. I watch the review all the time.
Just watched this for the first time and I liked it a lot. Fantastic movie and review.
I agree Robocop didn't need a sequel or a reboot....."BITCH'S LEAVE"
Thank you.
Great review. Poor RoboCop needs to have his vision system upgraded from 640 x 480 with shitty compression to 4K !
Out all the movies I've seen, this is at the top of the list for having most pausable screenshot worthy scenes. ICONIC
Holy SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII... how I loved finding out the 4rth directive. Thanks.
Amazing Retrospective/Review Oliver. Simply amazing. I have yet to become tired of Robocop, and you have made me want to watch it yet again. Thanks for working hard, and making great pieces of entertainment.
Basil Poledouris was a genius.
Such a great film. I saw it un-cut in '88 and I was in awe of it. Everything about it is quality, and the satire is what sets it apart for me.
Outstanding film.
"Let the mayor go, we'll even throw in a Blaupunkt."
Loving your choice of background musics.
Robocops chin guard is like Optimus Primes trailer and Batman eye make up.
It’s a masterpiece! Just brilliant in every way!
Oliver has an amazing talent to put together the best trailers for all my favorite movies.
Robocop , the terminator and blade runner. Monumental sci if films. Game changers.
@John-PaulHunt-q3z says you. Why do they keep getting rebooted and sequels being made ?
thank you again ollie....excellent job! i know a lot about the movie and you once again covered all the details perfectly......i also remember the "triple shot" gun upgrade from the game. keep up the great work. love your videos.
I love the Review. Remember ROBOCOP CENTRAL WEBSITE. I hope you knew about it. Before Robocop Archive. But Man This is the greatest Review I have watch. for Robocop.
An absolutely brilliant film. Perfect review, sir. Anyone unconvinced of this movie's excellence need only watch this video. It brought a smile to my face, and motivates me to watch this film again. I've come to appreciate RoboCop so much more over the last few months, and your review seals it for me! And I will say it again - one of the best movie endings ever! I love it!
The fight with ED209, that one shot when you see the eye through the visor. Great you mentioned that. My favorite moment.
RIP Miguel Ferrer. To me, he will always be Bob Morton.
Hello Oliver. I am a big fan of your videos, and I have been binge-watching them over the last week. Your youtube channel, and Good Bad Flicks are two of my favorites to watch. Keep up the kickass work! Cheers!
Thanks for your feedback Tyler!
The Criterion Collection RoboCop was among my first DVD Discs I purchased. It was at least one of my first five!
