One of the very few good things about Aliens: Colonial Marines is that they showed a lot more of the Sulaco's interior.

@@Dimmo87ie You got me thinking of “Star Trek: Elite Force” expansion. It allowed the player to visit just about every deck of the ship, interact with props, enter quarters and rooms, reading personal logs and accessing computer files. Man, I wish they had done that for the Sulaco.

I see Roy Scammell (the stuntman from the classic 1979 film) has passed today. His work was fantastic. He was in the suit when the Alien killed Brett, Dallas, and at the end (he was the alien who was ejected from the Narcissus and entered the engine) he'd worked on so many iconic productions. I've added him to my list

Everyone loves the alien, but how cool would it be to see a capital ship space simulator set in the Aliens time frame? There's so much detail to the ships that I think this could be an awesome title. Manage sensory systems, firing solution, support craft (like the drop ships), reactive armor, cooling, life support, reactor power... and more in order to out maneuver your enemy. Heck, even marine detachments could be a factor! There's even an alternate script to Alien 3 which involves the Chinese space forces as adversaries to the US forces... both, of course, vying for the Alien. So we have at least three factions: US Colonial Marines, China, and Weyland Yutani. Of course, I'm sure there would be ample opportunity to put the alien itself center stage in such a game. Suppose, for instance, there's an M-Class star freighter drifting in deep space with top secret cargo that everyone seems so desperate to capture ;)

The worst thing about ships of the Sulaco's class was the fire alarm system. Apparantly the ships response to a fire while the crew were in hypersleep was to shunt all of the sleep capsules into escape pods and launch those at the nearest planet. This led the total loss of several ships when one of the crew forgot to extinguish a cigareete or unplug the toaster before going into hypersleep.
The second worst thing about the ship class were the escape pods, which apparantly had no engines or braking thrusters and made planet fall like a rock. This often killed three quarters of the occupants during "landing".

For those comments addressing the odd fact that such a large ship didnt have any other personnel:
1- First off, James Cameron said that the inspiration for this movie came from the idea of gun ho, cocky marines getting cut off behind enemy lines in vietnam. If this movie was made that way, it would make sense how a small squad gets helicoptered deep into the jungle, but when their chopper is shot down they are stuck against a primitive force that uses wave attacks to overwhelm their superior technology and firepower.
2- Theoretically in the far future of this movie, the ship is largely automated. A handful of marines and Bishop can just push a button saying “Defend Ship” and it will fight back automatically. There is no need for a hundred people to push button and turn cranks, since it is largely utilized as a long range transport boat.
3- From a hypothetical standpoint, it is possible that wetland yutani (who largely funds and equips the colonial marines as a private off the books army) may not have wanted more witnesses than was necessary. Having dozens of fleet personnel onboard makes it that much harder to keep a secret if an entire colony was wiped out due to corporate negligence.
4- Its just a movie so get over it, nerd.

When I started writing Aliens fan fiction I set a lot of the first story aboard the Sulaco after the USCM detected it adrift and sent a team to find out why it had failed to return. Of course these marines found out that they weren't alone aboard the ship. The information in the Colonial Marines Technical Manual was invaluable when I was writing this.

I liked the design enough to incorporate it in the fleet list in my little sci-fi bit.
It fills a gap in the fleet list. When you need to deploy ground units but don't need a full scale troop deployment ship or heavy lander vessel.
So far the Sulaco class ships come in 3 variants.
The standard Mark 1 that is just a bit larger with different equipment, weapons, power and engine systems. Along with a greater capacity of drop ships ( 6) modified versions of what the Sulaco had.
The Mark 2 is larger and packs more weaponry and drop ships that can deploy larger APC's.
The Mark 3 is larger than the other 2 and has fewer weapons. It deploys directly to a planet's surface to land Type 3 Geist ground fortresses. Or walkers and different types of destroid class mecha.

The Alien universe is so cool. Humanity began the expand rapidly though space during the mid-2100's. We encountered a bleak, seemingly empty Milky Way until we encountered the remnants of Engineer colonies and their vessels. Xenomorphs existed in human colonists' nightmares and through swiftly hushed rumors through the ranks of Weyland-Yutani. Human nature didn't change, but what we began to encounter in the vast, cold vacuum would forever change our perception of what terror was.

    • @Dushess

And most horrible thing it that a really ideal bio-weapon by unknow origins. Look, one drone or another type has all system to establish a colony. Then the entire ship or station IS doomed. Too many things to keep in mind, too many possibilities to cut off. And you have all technical space, all holes and airducts to scan, secure, clean and maintain. Just to make sure it will not contain source of new treat in next 4 hours. Can you remove unknown amount of small ******** or some finalized xenomorphs from an entire dreadnought or even the whole station and be sure IT IS REALLY CLEAN?

Just for perspective, Zeta Reticuli is 39.17 ly distant. In the film it's stated that help was 17 days away. If help is coming from Earth, that works out to Warp 9.44. Enterprise at Warp 9.99 takes 14.35 days.
Lambert says that Nostromo will take 10 months to get home. 304 days to travel 39.17 ly equals Warp 3.61. Prometheus took a little more than 2 years, working out to a fuzz over Warp 2.
Orville is stated as covering 10 ly per Earth day.
