    The funny thing is you could hang the magnet right with the keys and nobody would even know! Great video! Thanks!

    Genuinely fantastic, I turned a door knob and mounted a magnet in a recess at the base, the made a recess in the box a mounted another magnet backwards so you can use the knob to open it or take it off to pull the nail

    Why not hide it in plain site? Have nails all the way around (either real nails or just heads) making it look like it's been nailed together, and then have that one nail holding it locked. People won't notice that that nail's in the wrong spot.

    Better option i thought of before you showed that you were planning on doing. drill a bit into the outside wood from the inside. then drill further into the flap. That way you can have a hidden magnet somewhere else near by & simply slide the magnet from the end further down the flap & it will unlock it without being able to lose the modified nail nor would others see how it is locked.

    I start searching for magnetic locks a min ago. RF ID, USB cables, ect ect..20-60$. I thought it could be simple.I clicked on your link. I am having a dip too. Thanks for this video! You just saved me time and money. Technology can be so over rated. Last thing I need is a tech product to fail when I am trying to get in to my box. "call a lock-smith"...no thanks, there ain't one within a hundred miles.

    You might have just come up with it in an afternoon… But I’ve been running through TH-cam results looking for the better implementations of this technique that I remember seeing awhile back, and yours is better than the previous 5 videos.
    So many of them are just so obvious and defeating the purpose, or just not very well positioned/planned. Or entirely over complicated. This one I would use as is, ready to go. 👍

    You could then add a slider trim over the corner(s), kind of as a decoration and hiding the evidence of the nail altogether. Lift the trim up and off, then remove pin. Love your method. Thanks.

    Love this idea! Have you thought about adding 1 more nail on that side, and 2 more on the other side? The three additional nails you add you could only make 1/2’ and basically create a pattern that allows the main nail to be camouflaged as part of the design? So there is only 1 functional nail, as the other 3 do not go all the way through the outside board? just a thought to add a symmetrical appearance as well as more security. :)

  • @Jameslwilson89
    @Jameslwilson89 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You should put a magnet on the inside of the hole to hold the nail firmly inside. Otherwise you could just tilt the box and let the nail fall out. It's a good idea though. Just think it needs a few extra touches.. I would also maybe leave the head of the nail in tact with a few False nails lined up the side of the box. to give you the illusion that its nailed shut.

    You could even keep the head on the nail, hammer in “accent nails” that are cut down to 1/4in around all the corners and then this one would be the actual lock but wound look like just one of the nails used to make the box.

  • @jaywelz9217
    @jaywelz9217 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There is a better way to do this with exact same materials.
    Drill the hole in the doors edge 1/2 inch deeper than length of pin.
    Drill side panel 1/2 inch deep to accept pin.
    Lock box by sliding magnet across door to drag pin into mating hole in side.
    Reverse to unlock.
    Advantage is pin is not visible.

  • @spikewinky
    @spikewinky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Brilliant and simple! Kudos for sharing! Do you think the magnet can slide the nail back & forth working from the side so I can use the idea for a concealed lock for a regular door where I cannot use the magnet at the nail end?

    • @PoposWoodworks
      @PoposWoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would be worth a try. I think it would work as long as the magnet is strong enough. I’d test it in a scrap piece of lumber first tho.

    ha ha ha ha ha ha.........showing the world how to create a stealthy lock mechanism for a wooden box, great stuff. Hendy to know this kind of thing, One question though.........you have your keys on show, so if someone comes along wanting to take something valuable ......well wouldn't they just take the keys to your vehicle rather than trying to break in to a wooden box ?

    You could drill the hole and then countersink a larger hole and put a wooden cap on the end of the nail. That way it looks like a rounded wood plug and can just grab the knob and pull it out.
