I'm receiving mixed advice about breaking into the voiceover industry. Some suggest that I should invest in acting classes for a year, then have a professionally produced demo, network within the industry, and eventually secure an agent. They also claim the VO field is becoming saturated with individuals offering poor-quality recordings and working for free or low pay, which they believe is damaging the profession. On the other hand, others, including yourself, suggest a different approach, emphasizing that it’s possible to succeed independently. My question is: What is the best course of action to successfully break into this field??
@Shannon_Robbie i say trust your gut, the information I give is the path that worked for me. If someone sounds embittered to the industry, is that someone you want to follow? There is no right or wrong way about it. This isn't like the field of medicine or engineering where you need a certificate and permission to work in the field. So, the most beneficial thing you can do is know yourself. What kind of approach attracts you? Do you feel too nervous to jump into the deep end without training? Or do you like to hit the pavement and figure it out along the way? I will say there are plenty of actors who get in class and stay there forever, because it feels safe and it becomes a crutch to them never just getting out there and booking gigs.

Hi, I would like to know what made you choose this mic? it's not really intended for voice over. The scarlet solo or 2i2 are good but a Steinberg c12 will do the same job for half the price. The great scarlet stuff starts with the 4i4 (I read benchmark about it). Careful with the XLR cable. I disagree with her. Don't go for a cheap one, it might create noire or distortion. Go straight away to a magami gold and keep it forever 😀

Cheap treatment that I use is Harbor Freight packing blankets. I did set them up so most of the wall is 4 layers of blanket thick. I don't think a single layer would be good enough. I put 2 layers of 1/2 inch drywall on the outside of my closet. It's a bit on the small size. It's 33 inches deep and 60 inches wide. The door is only 24 inches wide. Right now with the cold weather no ventilation is OK but this summer I'll have to add an AC to keep me from dying in my tiny studio.
Without any professional experience, I'm kind of improvising my demo reel, I've recorded some announcements I used to make while working in a grocery store and a monologue from a podcast, but I want to record some professional commercials too. Is it frowned upon to use a script from an existing commercial?
Hello Anastasia. A quick question. How many demos do you think are appropriate to start out with and should they be varied in subject matter, style etc...?@@nastasiamarquez6472

Hi Natasha I just love your video! You give such great information for someone who wants to get started in this business. I used to sing for the New York City opera company when I was in my teens. I am now retired however I have always thought about doing voiceover work and I used to know someone growing up in New York that did this type of work and Loved it. I am a soprano and often when I speak with people on the phone they think that I’m a teenager because of my high pitched voice. I also can do a lot of children’s and cartoon character voices such as Elmo. Most people say I have a decent singing voice. So I am going to take your advice and give this a try thank you so much! Sincerely,SO
My condenser mic's from China, bought for $5. My audio interface is a NI KOMPLETE Audio 6 bought for around $450. idk, I feel like mic advice is a myth now cause I sound exactly how I want it. Voice is clear, non-sybilant, etc. Everything you want your mic to be so you don't have to think about it. P.S. For those curious, I don't only have those as my gear, I also had the other must haves to pre produce a clear sound - like a pop filter, mic stand, and all that fun stuff.
I've been wanting to voice over for 12 years I'm finally pursuing this passion. I need to move but I'm working on that too. I already picked out my VO classes. But this gives me hope thank you!
Hi there! Thanks for your comment. I would say get very clear about what aspect of being a voice actor excites you. Whether it's doing fun voices, or feeling like you are able to express your authentic self in different ways, or bringing a script to life, etc. Then when you have moments of feeling overwhelmed with how much further you feel you need to go, or not knowing what to do next to grow, or even if you do get some anxiety about all the rejections, you can remind yourself of why you chose this in the first place and realize that you can find the fulfillment at every level of the journey. You're doing it for fun, and when you feel like you're not having fun, it's because you're getting wrapped up in the wrong things. Refocus back to the fun part and do that for a while until you get your enthusiasm back for the rest of it.
I ended up taking a “class” to be a voice over/actor…. And let’s just say definitely was one of those pay to plays… they wanted everything upfront first.. which gave me a weird taste in my mouth… thank you so so much for this video gave me so much insight and how to actually start…!!
Hey, I was wondering if you still had your original voice reel/demo. I was curious to see what your first one was before you had one done professionally. Thanks in advance! Loved the video
Most of this made sense but I have 2 questions. 1. I’m still a little confused about demos how do you make them? Should you have someone else do the editing and you just do the voiceing or should you make them? And are they good to use every time you audition for something or just certain times? 2. If you ever voice act for big company’s and you don’t want to work online would that mean you have to travel allot? Or should you just stick to one company and live around there. (That was way more than 2 questions lol sorry)

Unfortunately living in Miami its very hard to find this type of work. The entertainment jobs are not as many as they used to be, this video was very informative for sure. I've had the pleasure of doing some voice work through agents and stuff for fun. Been wanting to do this for years but life gets in the way and you become stagnant. Sorry for such long response, I'm just still learning these things, BUT most importantly, thanks for the video it was very helpful🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️
Voiceover is open to all ages! Sometimes auditions even request teenagers or kids specifically. I didn't have a background in Voice over I just began learning one day and went from there.
@@nastasiamarquez6472 Really? Thanks so very much for the reply. I've learned so much just from your vid and the comments!🙇🏾♀️
My studio is two walk-in closets put together, It's 3x4 foot. The outside doesn't look great however the inside is perfect. Sometimes it's not about the mic but the quality of voice and acting skills.
Yes agreed! So many factors that make a difference.
Thank you so much for the information. I always wanted to do voice acting.
One of the better 'How To' on voice acting on youtube! Can't wait to get started. Sound proofing sounds like the most tedious stage especially since I don't have much space for it :( Thanks for all the advice! Will remember to shout you out when I make it big... LOL
Glad it was helpful! My sound engineer Lenny B has some great info on sound proofing. I have some vids with him about it, or you could check out his channel.
My brother is an actor and has been on me to take acting lessons for the past 2+years. I receive emails from Backstage and today I actually saw jobs for voiceover actors. I've been interested in voiceover work for many years; which lead me to this video at 3:30 a.m. lol Now's my time to step out! Thank you so much for this informative step by step of HOW to get started!!! I'll provide an update once I take ACTION...Namaste
That is awesome to hear! Best of luck to you.
So in 7 months you haven't taken action
Thank you. I found this video very useful
So, glad it helped! I'm thinking about making an updated video to this, if there was anything you still had questions about, let me know and I can add it to the next video!
@@nastasiamarquez6472 ok thank you I'm relatively new to voice over. I'm still in the beginning phases now. I will definitely let you know once I get more acquainted with the skill sets and acting.
I know this is an old video, but I've been watching so much content on getting into VO/VA work and I really enjoyed this video. I'm currently saving for a Shure SM-58S bundle and a Focusrite Solo interface. Looking forward to diving into this industry, even if it only becomes a hobby.
I'm just getting started and now that I've seen your video, I'm a fan and want to see everything you put on TH-cam.
That is so kind, best of luck to you!
Very good video Nastasia! I followed some of your videos today and made my first little demo to show my wife! I was beaming by the end of it, I was so proud. I look forward to dabbling a little more because I've thought about this off and on for a while. Hopefully, I'll learn a lot from the folks you mentioned and your future videos too! Thanks again for posting and keep it up!
You are very welcome! I love hearing others getting started out so keep at it!
Yes, thank you!! I began voice acting in 2017 and have just broken into the official, agency/casting business!!
Thank you, Ma'am. Your shared time, experience, and wisdom is appreciated. Have a lovely evening.
Thank you! You too!
I came here to learn how to voice act instead I had to listen about all the stuff I can't afford and then they went into getting a job and stuff and im like woah were getting a head of ourselves.
in my future i want to be a voice actor just like tom Kenny was
Hi Nastasia, it's great to hear you say you didn't even know what an interface was when you first started!! That gives me hope... Thanks👍
Most definitely, and I am continuing to learn so don't shy away from the learning curve(:
thank you .....I am just starting in this voice over work. People have been telling me i have a radio voice . You sound great
I know this video is a few years old now, but you definitely gave me a lot to think about, thank you. I’m visually impaired and not quite sure if someone like me can even make it in the industry, but hopefully I can figure it out.
Finally -- a video that shows start up equipment. Thank you.
You bet!
Excellent video Nastasia. Straight to point and hits all the must haves for sure. Thanks for sharing
You are very welcome!
Decided to do voice acting last year cause it sounds kinda fun. I've only been doing comic dubs on my own and I just got a mic, but I'm looking forward to seeing how things go from here. Thanks for the video!
This looks like a very fun job
The interface is no longer available on on Amazon. If you have any ideas on a alternate, I would like to hear them.
I use a Focusrite Scarlett interface. It's about $150.
Thank you for the tips.. I visited your website and wow I was blown away from your demos.
Glad it was helpful!
I want to do it as a side job :) I would love to do voice acting so now im doing lots of research!
Thank you so much for a wonderful tutorial. I am setting up my Cartoon Studio and I gathering info to design my voice over part. Your tutorial is honest and pretty straight forward. Simply Fantastic. Thank you. You are wonderful. Cheers.
Glad you found it helpful!
Thank you I’m completely lost and overwhelmed
Many are in the beginning, keep moving forward(:
You’ve got great acoustics!
Thank you so much!
Wow! Talk about fate. I'm wanting to make a change with my online biz (it ain't producing the way I want). The last couple of months, I've had people, who I didn't know, who heard me talk online asking if I was a voice actor person. (I do podcasts and videos). I didn't even know that was a thing! Today, just randomly, I was researching other types of online gigs and watched a video where someone was talking about ACX. Went to that site and looked around. I came back to TH-cam to see what was being said about it and this video popped up! LOVE IT! LOVE THE INFO! Now, you have got my created juices flowing on this voice over thing! Thank you!
That is awesome to hear, we always want to get the creative juices flowing
So helpful don't really get vidios like this thank you
So glad this is helpful! If there is anything specific you'd like to learn about let me know!

This is ace, I speak 7 languages and I recently found out about voice acting I want to thank you for this advice I already have the equipment so, I best get on with producing samples
So much good advice to take here!
I hope one day i can achieve the same greatness as a voice actor you've become. 👏😊
I hope so too!
Brilliant! I am super green to the industry and know nothing about much of it. Thanks!
Happy to help!
Yes, the heat in that small insulated space can get overwhelming for me too! Great tips
Without any professional experience, I'm kind of improvising my demo reel, I've recorded some announcements I used to make while working in a grocery store and a monologue from a podcast, but I want to record some professional commercials too. Is it frowned upon to use a script from an existing commercial?
Hello. Thankyou for your video! People often compliment me for my voice and yours is the first video I have watched. Thankyou for your suggestions!
You are so welcome!
Hello Anastasia. A quick question. How many demos do you think are appropriate to start out with and should they be varied in subject matter, style etc...?@@nastasiamarquez6472
Really helpful!!! Thank you Anastasia!
Glad it was helpful!
Thankyou your video has been the most help i have found in months.
You're very welcome! I am glad this has been useful
You see I have this newly realized dream of becoming successful in the entertainment industry (I’ve just realized that since I didn’t know what to do with my life, something that has always been there and something I love is entertainment and it makes sense to me). I wanna get on this particular show but I’m far from it, hopefully I can one day! Thx for the starting tips.
I thought I was nuts one time making sound booth around house and than getting mad , making new one, and I’m not even half way there, you are so smart I admire you 👍🏼
It's a difficult process, but you have to keep going! Keep up the hard work and it will pay off(:
Thanks for the info. I have been doing VO in Japan since 2005, and am now just reaching outside Japan. I have been fortunate in Japan, but now want to challenge myself with a bigger market.
Best of luck!
Sincerely,SO
Again, thank you for this information! I'm trying to figure out how to get started.
You can do it!
Thank you so much Nastasia, I have learned a lot form your professional and friendly video.
Glad it was helpful!
I've been wanting to voice over for 12 years I'm finally pursuing this passion. I need to move but I'm working on that too. I already picked out my VO classes. But this gives me hope thank you!
You can do it!
Most helpful VO video I have seen yet, thank you!
That is so awesome to hear. I am glad you got some use out of it!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm currently working on doing voice acting.
Any advice for high anxiety folks? Not so much being turned down but i suppose for feeling overwhelmed by starting if that makes sense?
Sorry for the delay on this, but I actually just made a more in depth video as a response/answer to your comment. I hope you find it helpful(:
I have always wanted to get in that industry....but just nervous...I might try it in my down time
I did it as a side gig before I went full-time so that is totally doable
Definitely great and valuable information! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, this video helped me. I basically got everything you mentioned. I love your videos they’re awesome.
You are so welcome!
Glimpses over to the AT2020 I was gifted years ago.
Thanks for the information ! It was very, very useful .
Nicely done! Informative and to the point
I'm just getting started and every little bit helps. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Hey, I was wondering if you still had your original voice reel/demo. I was curious to see what your first one was before you had one done professionally. Thanks in advance! Loved the video
That is a great question! I will have to check through all my files and get back to you on that one.
Would appreciate if you can also get back to me. Thanks
I have two additional videos on how to make demo's that may help answer your questions!
Great information. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant!!!!
Hello very inspiring video! Gives me hope that it's definitely possible without any experience whatsoever! My little cousin once told me to do voice acting and it has stuck in my mind! Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video and I wish you much continued success!
Best of luck!
@@nastasiamarquez6472 Thank you! Will definitely be looking at more of your videos and the resources that you mentioned..always loved to read books out loud..helped me to understand them better!
Just got started last week! Put in my first two auditions over the weekend.
And, Doh! I went and bought that cheap foam padding XD
I love what you're saying but I couldn't make it through your video. The music you've paired with has a dinging sound that is sending me over the edge.
Lots of scam sites out there and agencies wanting money up front. Things I've learned from wanting to do acting. Thank you for the information. I would not mind giving this a try again.
Great video. I’m looking around for your recommended equipment. Prices have really increased a lot since this video was made. Eeeek.
