  • In today's video, I am going to be helping you guys out with your warped vinyl with a quick and easy fix to get them flat and playable once more!
    Oven settings: 80 degrees Celsius. 175 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes
    Equipment: 2 sheets of glass bigger than the record. (glass chopping boards work well such as these www.ebay.co.uk/...)
    Something big and heavy, I used a big off cut of wood but a couple of large books will do just as well.
    An oven to heat the record. (Preheat oven to 80 degrees Celsius. 175 degrees Fahrenheit )
    Something to clean the Record with.
    And Finally, the bent record its self.

    I've straightened them using solar power. I used two pieces of thicker glass. The top piece supplied the weight. A few minutes were needed. This nearly worked! The problem I had was that, even though there was only a tiny amount of the record poking out of the chopping board (2mm), that edge went crinkly and the record ended up no good. The rest of the record looked really good. So the answer, for me anyway, is to make sure that the glass completely covers the record, preferably with a bit to spare.
    Since writing this I've tried it on 4 more records. They're all now write-offs, so I'd steer clear.

    I've done this and melted one record, the times where the record hasn't melted the record remained warped. It seems there's a very fine line between having enough heat to actually make the vinyl pliable and not enough that it just remains the same shape once cooled. Very fine line that's very tricky to find and can be very costly to.

  • @demonovationable

    I used some glass shelves from IKEA made for the Kallax, they are heavy and fit a 12 inch record perfectly. I had a 10" record that was badly warped from being left in the car. I put it between the glass and into a 175 degree oven (the lowest my oven can go) for about 10 minutes. I then took it out and put something heavy on top and let it cool for a few hours. It didn't work. I did it again but this time left it in for 45 minutes. After cooling the record still has a *slight* warp, but plays perfectly. No melted grooves, no issues with the stylus tracking. This method works perfectly. Plus, if a record is so warped it doesn't play properly, what do you have to lose?

    You have to be extremely careful. If you leave it too long in heat source, grooves start shrinking, making it useless. Once the vinyl softens, it has to be removed from heat source immediately. I do the same thing with 2 pieces of glass I had tailor made for this purpose, but I use direct sunlight on a hot day. With this method I can monitor it constantly, to check when it's soft, just by removing the top glass sheet. Once it's soft, I put the sheet back on and move it to a cold area

    People get so butt hurt about the oven.... It was already ruined. He said he had nothing to lose. It was much more unplayable when warped.
    Also the argument of record vs. vinyl is pointless. Record/vinyl/LP who cares. Every record store I go to labels the record section as "vinyl section" so people will always say vinyl. Also, it is vinyl ..it is a record.. it is an LP. Really no need to be picky.

      You must mean an Album.
      I always called them records or LP's for the Long Players and we referred to the Album Charts.
      The term Vinyl only started being used to differentiate from CD, but I really do not get too hung up about it.
      Interesting point is that the term Album comes from the 78 era when a whole load of disks were presented in an actual album.
      The same was tried with 45's, but that idea was soon discarded, as it was easier to use a 33 LP instead.
      Could you imagine Prog Rock with tracks over 20 minutes long on a load of 45's?

    Using heat to remove the warping in the vinyl also melts the grooves in the LP, thus destroying the quality off the recordings.

    Interesting video. One mention of caution: It is not a good idea to touch the grooves of a vinyl record, especially not your entire hand. Doing this can transfer oils from your hand (fingers) to the record which will then cause dirt to adhere to the record.

    • @JaidonRymer
      @JaidonRymer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally agree, the only reason I handled the record the way I did in this video was because the record get extremely dirty in shipping so i had to give it a deep clean. I usually just hold by edge and spindle. :D

      KingCorny93 Record washers will not remove the embedded imprints of the fingers and hands of some people, no matter how many times the record is washed. Someone with particularly oily skin mishandled a record I own and despite multiple washings in a professional record washer, the hand prints remain. This is why vinyl records must always be handled by the edges without touching either the inner or outer grooves.

    If you are using fan oven set it for 60. Fan ovens are generally 20degC hotter than the setting, this is because the setting is for the main oven only, not the oven plus fan.
    Ovens will all be slightly variable so perhaps start at a lower temp and work up to find the sweet spot. Different vinyl thicknesses may respond differently at diff temps. I would experiment with some old shit from a charity shop to find a sweet spot for your records.

    I do a similar thing to my warped records, but didn't put them in oven. Instead I put that glass-record sandwich on my terrace in full summer sun for an hour, then brought it back to room and kept it like that for another one hour. After that my record came out fully flattened. No damage to the grooves. I just added an unused LP jacket after making holes of the same diameter as the centre level and put them in that sandwich in this order: Glass -> one side of paper jacket with hole -> record -> other side of paper jacket -> glass, and tightened them with cloth clips on all sides, before putting it in the sun.

    I'd say 80 degrees C is a bit hot. 65 tops. Also, glass on it's own is likely to squash the grooves. Put the record in a sleeve first and don't put the vinyl in the oven, the hot glass should do the job on it's own. Heat the glass in the oven then take it out and put the vinyl in. Baking your vinyl is likely to end in disaster. I notice you didn't play the record at the end to prove the process had worked. Flat vinyl but did it play?

  • @michaelslaughter7537
    @michaelslaughter7537 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As little as that record was warped, I could play it on my turntable with no problem. The real problem is if the warped area is short and deep, so that the bottom of the cartridge hits the surface of the record. Sunshine is gentler than an oven.

  • @user-xh9rz7rf8l

    Vinyl has memory in regard to form. Old thick vinyl that has been warped many years is tough to ever again flatten. The later thinner vinyl 70's and the 80's LP's are pretty easy to un-warp. I have gotten the warps successfully out of dozens of those. The oven method is an extreme. Too easy to get vinyl surface heat damage which is not repairable. I just put warped LP's in a tight pack within LP shelving in my attic. One hot summer up there in the southern US. No more warp.

      Hey, I know this is a 5 year old comment, just responding in case you get alerted and are able to reply. I have a record my Dad left me when he passed, he was a huge Red Sox fan and has a record of the entire 1975 season that had never been opened or played, he had been saving it as a collectible. But it was stored in our attic in Florida for over 30years. When I finally opened it for the first time to listen with my husband on our record player in LA, after having it shipped from FL, it's extremely warped. I am very hesitant to use the oven and put it in there without being an expert on that method or the correct temperature/length of time. When you say you use the natural heat of the attic to unwarp them, do you mean leave it tightly packed with something on top of it or an entire summer in an attic? As in 2-3 months? Thanks!

    • @WarHog38KCS
      @WarHog38KCS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@laurend7312 Hello, still got the TH-cam site. I have some old homemade LP wooden shelving in my attic. The high heat of today would be perfect for curing warped records in my attic. I use to get basically just mildly warped brand new records out of a huge cutout warehouse that I searched. I would put those warped records tightly packed with other records side by side within that attic wooden shelving. Extremely tight! Your husband might be helpful to muscle them into a tightly packed shelf. I always carefully placed the warped record between other records and positioned it all the way into the wooden shelf, then I muscled records into that shelf binding everything as tightly as possible. I then waited for the high heat of a summer of high 90's & hundred degree days piled together. The time period for doing that here is about over for this year. I know little about the climate in LA. Good Luck. I would not go the oven route on a cherished record. A vinyl groove changing heat warp is the end of it. Trash basket material.

  • @blu3collar949
    @blu3collar949 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Records which were damaged by sunlight will not be playable even if you try this method to flatten it. The grooves suffer damage and the record is basically useless. Warped vinyl which occurred while stored on a shelf is known as compression warpness and can be flattened over time if stacked flat with weight. I am not saying this method is bad. I just think that it may be a bit extreme for those who own very rare and valuable records.

    I flattened a single that was far more warped, in much the same way, it took about 9 months, using gentle weight and no heat. I put it on a shelf `(still in the dust sleeve) , put a glass chopping board on top, and a few large books on top,. As the months passed the record slowly flattened. Eventually it was flat. I worked on the idea that if it gets hot enough in a house for a record to distort, it gets hot enough for it to get flat if it is between flat surfaces with pressure applied.

    Ovens are not a good idea when it comes to records. Keep the LP in its sleeve (this makes the contact softer so as not to harm the ridges of the tracks). Then put it between to flat glass pains not to light but not to heavy, laminated sheets are good, around 0.5cm thick (avoid big blocks of wood!). Place in airing cupboard for 10 minutes (Can take a bit longer depending on the thickness of the record) (again not in an oven). Take it out and leave to get back to room temp. And then store your LPs vertically as always. We did this a lot in the 70s & 80s and it works a treat and no damage to your records.

    I use a record cleaner that vacumes the grooves out. I use 8, 2 inch binder clips around the glass. All pvc formulations are different so the correct time and heat is very hard to get. And letting it cool slowly and completely I believe helps. I've had about 60 to 70% success. Some have gotten flat and still played and sounded great, but some developed some minor pops n ticks. May have been dirt but under micro. looks like very, very, slight vinyl damage. If unplayable to start, nothing to lose, otherwise tough choice. Me being a reformed perfectionist it's tougher.

      You have to apply some warmth to soften the vinyl a bit in order for it to flatten successfully. It has to reach about 70 degrees C before it becomes pliable. Just having it under a stack of other records won't be enough.
