  • I wanted to share my personal procedure of cleaning dirty vinyl records, as I have followed this method for a long time. Low costs and produces great results both visually and also when playing your music.

    I have a very similar procedure to what you show here, and like you, have never had an issue with the results. Thanks for sharing.

    It would be a great deal better were you to use a record brush first of all to clean the surface debris from the record before applying any wet solution. Proper rinsing is essential and I would suggest using your shower if possible and blasting the record at full power. Don't worry if the labels get wet as they won't get damaged as long as they are simply dabbed dry.

    You mentioned Dawn dishwashing liquid which is a good choice as it contains sodium lauryl sulfate (sls), a very strong surfactant, that reduces the liquid's surface tension, enabling it to penetrate deep into the groove to clean the record. No matter what solution you use, if it contains sls or any other surfactant, you should be good to go.
    For what it's worth, I use shampoo with lukewarm water and a toothbrush, brushing with the grooves after which I rinse thoroughly using the toothbrush in the same fashion. So far, nothing has melted or disintegrated, but then again, this is only my experience. :))

    Not sure about the hairdryer bit but otherwise fine. You use a very similar cleaning solution to me. I wouldn't put the clean disc back into an old sleeve- a bit like wearing dirty socks!🤣

    Personally I would avoid paper sleeves, which may damage records. Go for some anti-static sleeves.

    idk man, i have heard that a damp ultra soft brush (I mean damp, not wet, just hold it into steam for some seconds) can lift almost all of the dirt off very softly (you'll want redampen the brush throughout).
    Could you compare the methods? If the result is the same I'd think a softer brush would be less abrasive.

    • @teensuicide9103
      @teensuicide9103 ปีที่แล้ว

      distilled water ofcourse

      I've tried the soft brush approach and I've worked out that it needs two things, one is pressure and the other is somewhere for the dirt to go. As long as there's a rinse process the second one is covered, or clean when suspended in water and it'll float away or sink away.
      With a soft brush that pressure just isn't possible. I'm not talking a lot, but soft bristle brushes don't convince me. As long as it's a natural brush you're good. I know people who use natural nail brushes to the same effect.

    I have been collecting records since i was about 8 years old got my first singles and collected ever since i remember a DJ Record shop opened in my town selling DJ stuff he always had a box of ex DJ records forsale i went in one day and found 3 singles i wanted only being a school kid the man gave me all 3 for 20p the records were slightly dusty and i was blowing the dust off .. he said when you go home get your mum to give you washing up liquid and lukewarm water.. you only need a little washing up liquid and clean them with that he gave me a record cleaning cloth and said dry them with that & i did the records were dust free and static free and looked really shiny like a new records iv always cleaned my records with that method iv had special cleaning stuff before from HMV the record collector etc some of the stuff actually left a residue on the record not with the washing up liquid though nothing .. i also use a Ultra-Fine Soft Bristle Anti-Static LP/Record Cleaning Brush before & after i play the record .. i house my records in pro white carded sleeves housed at the back of the album / single cover and then placed in a clear plastic record sleeve i have records from the very early 80s i even have the first single i ever got my self from 1980 and iv cleaned that a few times with the method above and it plays just like it did in 1980 well as good as a single gets i much prefer maxi singles no damage nothing i like the fact you have your own way but i will stick to the cleaning i have always done test the washing up liquid on clear glass there is never any residue left but with some cleaners iv got there was obviously you have got to be gentle and go in circular motion follow the grooves dry with a soft record cloth and away you go ..by the way i am a fussy person if the pro stuff worked i would by it iv also had one of them record cleaner things god it would bore the tits off you all that peeing about when you can get better results the way iv just said ..

    What about blutac? Roll it into a fat sausage shape, then place your vinyl on a table with a towel beneath, and roll the blutac around the record in the direction of the grooves, applying even pressure. Then wipe over with alcohol water solution. Job done!

      With that method you have done nothing other than taken some of the dust and dirt off the surface of the record. You have not got anywhere near the bottom of the groove to clean properly.

      @@hermanmunster3358 Blutac contains an oily residue. Therefore, by automatic decree, that's the last substance that you want to add to the dirt. However, you say you're taking it off with alco/water mix. OK, fine. But, I'm not entirely certain the blutac reaches the bottom of the groove. I used blutac in the 1970's. Today, things have moved on somewhat and a great deal more sophisticated, hence, why we have the Degritter Mk2 and the HumminGuru ultrasonic cleaners which are a whole other world entirely. Ofcourse, they're not within everyone's budget, but I'd avoid anything with oil deposits or these sticky rollers, too.

    Apropos of nothing: the wee glass dish is a ramekin. A carafe is the tall glass container for wine: broad at the bottom, narrows towards the top and flares out at the top. Sorry for being that guy.

    Using a toothbrush and a paintbrush is the biggest issue I’d have with your approach, not so much the homemade “solution”. Using small brushes is great if you want to go groove by groove. But it’s a piece of plastic, not a museum piece. Get two automobile dent remover suction cups, and a paint pad from a hardware store. You’ll be able to cover more surface in less time. Your method, if one has a batch of records to clean, would be much too time consuming to be practical.
