A lot of fire departments dispatch fire engines to medical calls. Its a more efficient use of resources as it saves the more limited number of aid units for medical emergencies. Most firefighters are cross trained as EMT and EMS and the trucks are fully kitted out with emergency medical equipment. So they can usually stabilize a patient on scene and determine if an ambulance is needed to safely transport the person to a hospital.

Weekend overtime at our company meant that, as a second shift worker, I had to arrive at 7am after my regular shift ended at 4am. I could only get, at best, 2 hours of sleep. One day I was written up for punching in 3 minutes late. I said, "Fine, I won't be working any more overtime." It only took management a week to realize that no one in my department could work if I wasn't there producing my parts. They quickly backtracked and destroyed the write up and asked me to please work overtime. I said ok...but only after getting a 20% raise.

Yep had managers like that. Heck I had one complain about how I hadn't booked any holiday time so he called me into the office and made me book time off... Then my supervisor pointed out that there was noone else in the factory who was trained in my job and because he had already approved my time off he couldn't cancel it so had to beg me to come in for those 2 weeks... I had a similar experience to the last story. The boss's kid took over the day-to day operation of the shop, and had an issue with me taking too many smoke breaks, leaving a few minutes early, and getting too much overtime. He decided to flex his authority by strictly enforcing start/stop/break times so I Maliciously complied. I stopped coming in 2 hours early (the overtime) to make coffee and get the machines warmed up for the day. The result was 10+ people standing around waiting for those 2 hours. It only took 2 days to get things back to normal.

I once had a manager at KFC/Taco Bell *She got fired but not for this reason* who was nice for awhile but her whole demeanor changed months later. I'm a dishwasher at our location and one night the water was really dirty like no one had put any dish soap in it. I walked up to her and told her I needed to redo the dishwater and she looked at me and said "You're not redoing it. I just ran it" and not in a nice way. I was gonna tell her "Well why don't you come and look for yourself" instead I decided on malicious compliance. I looked at her and said "You're the boss" and went about cleaning our dishes. Later when I looked down at our bottle which is connected to the sink it wasn't the right one. Ours has a special lid that lets the dishwashing liquid into the sink. I told our management that night what had happened so it wouldn't fall on me that the dishes were dirty. Not sure what happened the next day but I felt I'd share

Reminds me of something that happened when I was working at McDonald's. At the time I worked 9-2, but I had to get a ride there with my brother that also worked there, but he worked 8-4. So anyway, we get there nearly an hour before my brother has to clock in and I see the mop bucket left out in the lobby. The water inside was absolutely _disgusting_ looking, and we're generally not even supposed to leave cleaning supplies out unattended. But I'm not on the clock yet so I pay it no mind.
Nearly two hours later I clock in and go to deep clean the bathrooms, this takes around another two hours since I was being thorough. So four hours have passed. One manager who kept trying to micromanage me and boss me around told me to mop the floor, that she already put out a fresh bucket of water for me. I'm suspicious but I go out into the lobby and see the mop bucket... In the exact same spot as it had been four hours before. I check, and the water is just as gross as when I arrived. I have no idea why she lied to me about that. Did she think I would just... Blindly use the water as was? Did she intend to get me in trouble for using the dirty water she left out for me? What?
This manager also tried to talk me into taking a different position as the dishwasher. I asked about the hours and she told me 10-1. Two hours less than I worked and I STILL had to ride to work with my brother. So I would have spent around 5 hours waiting around in the tiny employee breakroom because they didn't allow us to sit in the lobby anymore. Like WTF? She knew this! And she still wanted me to take way less hours and sit around and wait and waste my time?

First story: I was a 911 dispatcher for almost 40 years. I broke my ankle at my own front door at 9 PM one night. Our ambulance districts out here in the sticks are huge, especially at night; one crew per district. Knowing from my work experience I would deplete a very large stretch of the coast of its one ambulance for 3-4 hours, I declined transport right then, and opted to call them back in the morning (I needed their stair-climbing wheelchair to get to the driveway, using two sets of stairs). The first call, because of not getting transported, cost me $577.00 that insurance and Medicare would not cover, but the 1.5 hour ride to the hospital the next morning was fully covered. So yeah, the mom had to cough up for the call, unless it was fire service only. I

    Story 3:
I used to work in a McDonalds, and our store could get quite busy at times because it was on a retail park and near a few schools.
So one day, it was busy, and the fry machine to cook the chips started leaking onto the floor and was doing it that quick, it would not hold the oil in it. So people had to be told that they could wait for chips (unknown how long it would take to fix) or get something else that was a side for a substitute. Most people picked the substitute option, but one guy (Kevin) was angry that we didn't have chips. I was on Booth 3, so I had the displeasure of advising him of this. Kevin basically shouted at me, "I will wait, you are fucking usless, you call yourselves a fast food place?" And then parked up to wait.
Now the manger, Steve, was behind me at the time, and told the manager in the kitchen, who happened to be his girlfriend, Vicky, what happened and that they insulted me. Vicky looked at me, then at the car parked up and said, "Make him wait." Steve and Vicky took a liking to me. In fact, most managers did, which was nice that they had my back.
He waited 45 minutes for chips... even though we managed to fix the machine after 20 minutes and got it to stop leaking.
I have plenty more stories about working in that store, from egging cars and customers to throwing drunk kids out of the store.

Like, I 've lived in various degrees of the sticks throughout my life, and I've been stung by bees (and also wasps) more times than I can count. It hurts, yes. First, ❗NEVER SQUEEZE a bee stinger with your fingers or tweezers❗ If there's any venom left in there, it could empty it into the patient. Scrape it from the side with a credit card/drivers license/etc.
Second, at least OP had the decency to try to get them to find more normal assistance before calling 911 for an obvious non-emergency.

12:30 for Americans out there (I'm also American) when OP said "chips" he means French fries, because that's what they're called in the UK and other English territories

    • @melkiorwiseman5234

Actually, in Australia they're called "chips." We may occasionally refer to the shoestring variety sold by the golden arches as "fries" but they're more commonly called "chips." Interestingly, what the USA calls "crisps" are also called "chips" but the context helps to disambiguate the word. Adding a qualifier such as "hot chips" would be used if needed, but most of the time, you're unlikely to mistake "getting a packet of chips" for someone getting the hot variety, or "going to Maccas for some chips" for someone getting the crispy variety. 😆

Story 1 reminds me of a time when I was working the spare parts counter of an auto parts retailer. Guy comes up to my counter and asks for "one of the spares guys", I said I could help but he insisted on one of the guys. I saw our new Junior casual to the side and asks him to come over to help him. The guy said he needs brake pads for his car, jnr looks to me and i advised him to ask what the car was and he repeats this back to the customer, the confused customer looks back and forth between us and answers, I then advised the jnr about the catalogue and to look up the car, the questions are repeated like this between the 3 of us with model, front or back etc. The jnr then is confused as this model has two braking systems in the catalogue and he asks the customer which one he has, customer is getting annoyed and says I don't know, and I felt he had gotten the point and ask directly if had already taken off the pad and he said yes, so I asked if the pads spring was "m" shaped or like a flower and he replied flower and without even looking at the book told jnr to get the part number he needed. The funny thing was he had a very common car for us the I knew all the part numbers by heart, if he dealt with me like anyone else there he would be out inside 5mins instead of the half hour it took teaching the jnr. Just because I'm female.

This is a common problem women have in "manly" work places specifically, and for customer support and sales people in general.
You thought it's about you, YOUR gender.
      Customers don't care about you.
      They care about themselves.
It's likely one of 2 options:
      1. Dude don't think a woman can be knowledgeable about car part(malice, ignorance)
      2. Dude is uncomfortable around a good looking girl and want to speak to another dude(incompetence)
Don't attribute to malice things that can be explained with incompetence.
Makes you think better of people in general, because most people aren't raging misogynistic pigs or misandrist gaslighters.
As a man I WOULD have referred a woman to a female coworker in a similar case, and would've likely gotten sexual harassment accusations or something if I didn't.
Is it wrong to apply the same logic and curtesy to men?

  • @merlinathrawes746

Bicycle story: I agree with the commenter. Have one guy JUST to run the register. Any time someone asks him for help, he gets one of the women who actually know what they're talking about.
Bee sting story: Good job, OP! Asking for medical help is okay. What's not okay is making a big fuss when the people you ask can't provide it and you ignore all the suggestions given to get help. And unless you are allergic to the point of needing an ambulance, you don't tell someone to call 911!!! Good grief!
Water story: FREE alarm vs hundreds, possibly thousands, of dollars in water damage all because you don't want a small hole in your wall that will be plugged after the alarm wire is run? And you don't want to answer the phone or the door just to be safe? How stupid are you?

    For the old guy story,
Where I worked literally my entire working life we got a new manager now most of the people I worked with has been there at least 10 years if not 20. This guy is going to tell us how it should be done week after week he keeps telling us that we’re shorting him on the order that you did not deliver what you promised, so after four deliveries where this new manager says, we shorted them. We had people go out and get newspapers for most every town in the county lo and behold there were up to 10 flyers in each paper where they were only supposed to have one I made a point of bringing that choose a new managers attention when he was sitting in with the district manager.
We had people going out once a week picking up over 200 papers on the day. The flyer was to go in the paper, instead of getting 200 flyers sometimes we got up to 1000 flyers. The people running the machines that were inserting the flyers did not make sure it was only inserting one flyer at a time, the new manager that wrote us up and complain to everyone spent the next three years hearing from me about how many extra flyers I got in my own paper at home after I retired. I also made it a point to call his manager and tell him as well .

The car routes happily sign off at 3 p.m., all work done, when you still have your own route to sort and deal. I once called my boss, desperate since it got so dark that I couldn't see the mailbox signs anymore, that I would have to stop for the day after 13 hours of work. I got *SCREAMED* at, and he demanded me to return to the sorting center immediately. Trying to do your job, albeit overtime, is apparently bad.

Relating to bicycle story: Years ago I watched an episode of Sanford and Son starring Redd Foxx where he had to go to a dentist. If you don't know who Redd Foxx is, he was a black comedian who was very popular back in the 60 -80's. Anyway, he found out he was going to a black dentist and he was freaking out claim that he must be a correspondence course dentist who got his license through the mail. His son kept trying to insure him that he will do fine and that black doctors have been treating people for years and even the first open heart surgery was done by a black doctor. He was still skeptical and when he saw the dentist he kept putting up a fuss so the dentist told him that he knew what his problem was and left the room. Then a white dentist came into the room and he (Redd) breathed a sigh of relief then started boasting about the degree that he must have and about his training and finally figured out that the white dentist was the one who got his mail order degree and suffered dearly for his misconception.
Crazy to think that only men know about bicycles... My wife is still a better car mechanic then I am.
Great stories today. I was once in EMS and got called out to a young woman who was claiming she was bleeding to death. Arrived on scene and found this woman holding her hand. We asked who was the patient and where are they. She said she was and told us that she had jabbed herself with a needled and was starting at her hand with a horrified expression. We looked at her hand and couldn't even see any blood so we asked her where she was bleeding and she pointed to her hand and said, "Right here!" We still didn't see any blood and we told her that we think she will live and talked her into cancelling the call. We were wondering if we had a mental patient...

I had a giant ass fire truck pull up to assess me when I fell down town once. I was heading to the light rail to head home after a job interview. I had the flu so I was feeling pretty woozy. I already have a pattern of turning my ankles and falling, and this was one of those artistic laid brick amphitheater type places, all the bricks were the same color, but they weren't flush with other bricks when it started the stairs part. I stepped on the edge of a raise brick, turned my ankle and fell. Only my pride was hurt, but a few people made a fuss, including a cop who witnessed my fall, and called for medical. It was so embarrassing when a giant ladder truck, with the double steering wheel at the back end showed up and all the firemen ran to help me. I didn't make the call, but it was still embarrassing.

No way can I agree with the malicious compliance in story 2. In our area we've been having a shortage emergency workers but have a lot of accidents and violent situations. Taking those limited workers away from real emergencies is no joke.

If Story 2 took place in USA then the "malicious" compliance actually saved the EP some money. On average the fine for a fake 911 call is less than a two minute ambulance ride.

"New Managers," with a few exceptions, are the bane of well-functioning departments or workplaces. Many come in not only NOT understanding anything, but not willing to learn, not willing to listen and not willing to WAIT to figure out how things work. They tend to micromanage, making what had been a contented team into disgruntled workers, at the very least. That type often want to make THEIR mark and all too often, dislike the long-standing, experienced people.
I was lucky to have a great "new manager" starting a few years ago but due to dysfunction in the larger organization, she left and moved out of state, and now I have one that's a headache, moving things around without understanding WHY things are where they are, trying to advise an exceptionally competent coworker, and throwing away beloved (and rather expensive) items. She's one of those "if it's worn out, it must the thrown out," types. We are a library, one of the smaller branches, and had, until a few months ago, not only worked competently but we EXCELLED. We had mostly happy workers (the unhappiness had to do with the larger organization, rather than our branch, where we were VERY happy) but now, those of us who have been there for some time are much less than happy. I HATE "new manager" syndrome. It's destructive to great teams. IMO, new managers should have to work at a place doing other jobs and understanding what's going on, with very little control to do anything, before they are allowed to manage.

Yes such a pain, I worked somewhere that had new restaurant manager like every year. When I started it was great and staff all experienced and ran tight ship, very busy and popular place, but every new manager would make us change the system to ones that we already tried and improved on so it was like going backwards every time. By the time I left all the good staff were gone and restaurant was dead.

    • @GoddessPallasAthena
      @GoddessPallasAthena 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@Wysaw I really think companies and organizations need to change how they choose new managers or departments or locations. They need to think of the culture of the place, how well its run, etc., and get managers that would actually improve the place. Instead, I think people are promoted due to past successes, which CAN be a good thing if there is solid indicator that they have actual LEADERSHIP potential and an ability to be flexible and learn, or due to favortism, a need to reward someone for something, etc.
A place that's a mess might need a leader that's very organized, hands-on and might have to be a bit tough. But a place that's running well needs someone to keep motivating people, add TO the place (such as maybe getting items or supplies that would really help the workflow) and even willing to roll up their sleeves and chip in where needed. The LAST thing a place that's running smoothly with hardworking but happy workers, is a power-tripper, or micromanager. I do believe that a bad manager can easily chase off great workers, this is something companies NEED to invest more time and resources to doing right.
They can find other ways to reward good workers who may not be great leaders, or have them try out in smaller projects, and go through rigorous training, and make sure that a probationary period (with some input from workers) would be a good idea, at least for teams that are already doing great. Other rewards might be raises, bonuses, or non-leadership promotions.

    • @Wysaw
      @Wysaw 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@GoddessPallasAthena Yeah I agree with all of that. They also need to actually keep an eye on new managers for first few months, because it seems an attribute of useless managers is being able to bs there way through interviews to get jobs they can't do competently and then leave before being discovered, spring boarding to a better position in another place.
"I just worked for so and so pristine place and fixed it up, now I am looking for my next step up" kind of thing, must be stressful way to live I think constantly having to stay ahead of your bs trail before it catches up to you lol.

    • @GoddessPallasAthena
      @GoddessPallasAthena 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@WysawsViper Completely agreed! Too often, there is little to no oversight of how managers operate.
Also, good managers should be well-rewarded. But then, corporate culture needs to change too, since their definition of GOOD managers could actually be BAD - corporations often look fir short-term, easily-measuable solutions, rather than long-term ones.

Imagine living rural without a well or access to a river system.
Im spoiled as a Canadian clearly, never once lived somewhere without a well and at least one small brook within sniffing distance.
We did get water trucks on my grandmother's farm two decades ago, but that was for the pool. Since our poor well running low wasnt exactly good to do constantly.
It was on a water network shared by a home down the road, so if we drained our well constantly they got limited water as well.

2:00 a similar thing is at a campus’ workplace, but it’s the opposite. I like to go to a campus art store, and occasionally, an entitled little twerp comes in and insists that certain art supplies “aren’t worth that much”. They have a stocker that is usually around, but this fella has a super-power: he’s an artist and an art historian, and a damn good one (we talked commissions once, and we showed each other our works. He’s so good, I wish I had the money to commission him). Whenever an entitled customer comes in and tries to insist that it’s “not worth that much”, they bring up the stocker and he lays them down flat. Every point, he brings up a piece and breaks down the price, the math, and why it’s worth that much. I once saw him do it, and I wanted to praise him at his feet, cause it was like watching a genius at work (I sound like I’m exaggerating, but I’m not, I love art but suck at math, so seeing someone break it down quickly and fluidly is GORGEOUS). The entitled prick either scrams, or just gives up. Like, part of me gets it, cause college students and stuff, but they’re trying to haggle a 3 dollar extending ruler, saying “I can just tape three rulers together, this shouldn’t cost that much”, and I just snapped “then go do that then, get out of line”.
