Total beginner and want to try the most palatable (in terms of both taste and texture) one first. No problem if it’s more expensive. I’m a bit confused by your comments a bit *which* King Oscar you preferred. Sometimes it sounds like you preferred the skinless & boneless, and other comments sound like you preferred the other King Oscar (the little ones). Please let me know thanks!

  • @lars2894
    @lars2894 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It's worth noting that King Oscar and Chicken Of The Sea are owned by the same company - Thai Union Group. So they are likely the exact same species of Sardines caught in same place, then filtered and sorted in terms of quality before being stamped as either brands.
I personally prefer the bigger species from Morocco or Portugal. Once you get over the $2.50 price point, their texture is firmer and smell is fresher than Bristling ones. What you described as a "strong" fishy smell is generally an indicator of a seafood product that took longer time from catching to packacging, usually present in lower quality brands.

    Thank you for your video.
    What?
    No Brunswick Sardines? AGGHHH!
A Sardine connoisseur, who woulda thunk it.
I canned Smelts in the small half pints and you'd think they were sardines.
Years ago when the food bank was an actual "resource" for me to utilize, (total income $375 a month) I hit the place when a factory truck from the fish plant was making a delivery and the driver gave me a full case of Sardines packed in Oil, I even had a choice of water or Oil, so I got the Oil.
That's fifty cans of sardines BTW.
That third can wasn't packed all pretty now was it?
From my experience in the fish industry, the garbage fish get the extra flavorings. You know, you're packing fresh fish until the fish isn't so fresh no more and then switch to flavoring the stuff.
You oughta see the huge one pound cans of Sardines here in Canaduh that come from China packed in a Tomato sauce. The thing is, the fish are huge and the sauce is great. Served on a bed of Rice and you can't go wrong.
We can get canned Mackerel from China as well. I mix the Mackerel with homemade Mustard Pickles for a wonderful sandwich spread.
They literally wiped out the huge Mackerel and Herring industry here by over fishing. The greedy (Bleepstards)
We used to can all our own Mackerel.
Thank god for that new "invasive" species called Stripe Bass, ... they get huge and you can catch them by the hundreds right off the beach.
Thanks for the food fight and catch you soon.

I think it's great you have some nice striped bass. I've never eaten it before, though. We don't seem to get them. This far south. Your story about other countries taking all of the fish remind me of that song by Stan Rogers th-cam.com/video/BRUSqO8fObU/w-d-xo.html

A viewer suggested TV dinners so I have ordered six different Salisbury steak TV dinners. I can think of dozens of different types of food but I'm more interested in hearing what you guys want to see. Here is a list of food items I think would be fun for me to do, but please add yours to the list
    strawberry ice cream
    fried chicken
    breaded shrimp
    fish fillets
    canned ham
    coffee
    coffee creamer
    canned soup
    Chili in the can
    chocolate eclairs
    macaroni and cheese
    pudding mix
    ginger ale
    root beer
    dinner rolls
    gravy mix
    mashed potatoes
    apples
    sauerkraut
    hotdogs
    potato chips
    corn chips
    meatloaf
    chicken sandwiches
    pizza
    trail mix
    corn beef
    pickles
    mustard
    olives
    cranberry sauce
    salad dressing
    breakfast cereal
    nondairy milk
    coffee substitute
    breakfast sausage
I think the next food fight is going to be TV dinners or pudding mix. Thanks again to everyone for watching and commenting. I'm looking forward to hearing your input.

Hi Robb! Very interesting food fight. I’m not a fan of sardines, it’s too fishy for me. I love good tuna though and eat it a couple times a month. But a study said because of the mercury found in tuna that it wasn’t good to eat often and that’s why I cut back on my consumption. Thanks for sharing, this was fun. Have a blessed night!

Hello Willows, thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it. I'm not going to encourage anybody eat something they don't like, but if you like tuna, which is a large fish and may have health issues from eating it. You might want to look into the skinless boneless sardines I mentioned. They actually didn't taste like sardines or smell like them either. It was a lot like tuna. I think it is a pilchard. It's a very small fish and does not have the same toxin profile tuna does.

I was looking for an inexpensive mustard sardine because my market was out of Beach Cliff. Beach Cliff was our families go to since I was a child (I’m 60 now). My aunt (rip) used to finely chop onions into the mustard sardines and mash it together on a Ritz cracker to serve us kids (7 total kids after school). COTS was actually less expensive, so I grabbed a bunch of the new to me flavors. Mustard is by far my favorite, then olive oil. I did not like the Mediterranean Sardines though. I do however love King Oscar’s Mediterranean Mackerel 😘

Thought it might be fun to branch out after sardine videos started weirdly popping up in my YT feed and picked up two new brands: the Wild Planet you have above, and Mantiz in Spanish olive oil. The Wild Planet was bad, visually unappealing, smells nasty and not pleasant at all. Hey Island gal, I know what you mean. There are some canned fish I don't like. Also, I don't like shrimp unless it is very fresh. I grew up catching my own shrimp and eating it the same night. That spoiled me. I appreciate the comment.

Would make a great sandwich or just if you’re hungry and need something to eat or “tuna” salad
And for a third of the price I don’t see the need to buy King Oscar

@@RobbsHomemadeLife I’m trying to save money right now on food, but I definitely prefer King Oscar
King Oscar is like 3x better and that’s why it’s 3x the price, but by no means is CotS a low quality product
CotS is a high quality product, maybe not their flavors, but the integrity is there

I think they must have been a bad batch. If you read the reviews on Amazon many people love them. Mine tasted of ammonia. And the texture was wooden. They were some of the worst sardines I ever had.

I make a jerk/garlic butter, melt it, spread it on tortillas, fry the tortillas, than eat them with sardines and “special” hot sauce.

I recently got the courage to try sardines. I tried the King Oscar Jalapeno. Tolerable, but pricy. Just now tried the COTS in EVOO. I added a dash of lemon juice and some hot sauce. About the same, but not quite as small and solid as the KO. And at less than 1/2 the price (1.19 vs 2.98), I'll stick with them

    King Oscar Skinless & Boneless Sardines in Olive Oil, 4.38 oz Can ... $2.48 / 56.6 ¢/oz
Chicken of the Sea Wild Caught Sardines in Oil Lightly Smoked, 3.75 oz Can ... $3.96 / 94.3 ¢/oz
No Chicken of the Sea with Lemon
Wild Planet Wild Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil Lightly Smoked 4.4 oz ... $2.98 / 67.7 ¢/oz
I don't eat sardines, but I do love King Oscar Kippered Snacks. I have done a taste test with other kippered snacks and they have the best flavor.
Last week I did a taste test with Corned Beef Hash. And it always comes down to if you like the flavor better and if it is a bit more money, enjoy the one that you like.
    1) MARY KITCHEN Corned Beef Hash, Canned Corned Beef, Steel Can 14 oz ... $3.16 / 22.6 ¢/oz
    2) Great Value Corned Beef Hash, 14 oz Can ... $2.96 / 21.1 ¢/oz

Chicken of the Sea are to mushy for me. I like a little firmness to my deens,, but great comparison. I look forward to the Salisbury steak TV dinner one that's one of my favorites. PS. a price comparison would help out a bunch as well, some of us can't afford the pricier stuff.
