  • The Hop, also known as the Milwaukee Streetcar, is a modern streetcar system in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The 2.1-mile (3.4 km) initial line connects the Milwaukee Intermodal Station and Downtown to the Lower East Side and Historic Third Ward neighborhoods. A 0.4-mile (640 m) Lakefront branch, to the proposed "Couture" high-rise development, has been mostly constructed, but is not projected to open until late 2020. The system is owned by the city and operated by Transdev.
Construction of the system began in late 2016 and was completed in summer 2018. Service to the public began on November 2, 2018

The trouble with the Milwaukee streetcar is that it zig-zags from an intercity transit station on one side of downtown to nowhere in particular on the otherside of downtown. It's usefulness is inherently limited as a result. Extending the line up the lakeshore to the university, for instance, would greatly increase its value for people traveling in and out of downtown.

@@boggy7665 This was very informative, thanks. This kind of abuse of power should be national news, but somehow the GQP gets away with so much crap, it's outrageous. At any rate, Milwaukee could build several lines and create an actual tram network. Once I went to the city of Kaohsiung in Taiwan, it only had one metro line, and few people used it. On the other hand, millions of people use the metro in Taipei. The point is, if you want people to ditch their cars, you must give them a mass transit network allowing them to get anytime anywhere. Then more and more people will use it.

Hi, Nick! If you're referring to Columbus, OH, practically zero support in the state budget for public transit would be one of the reasons. That hasn't inhibited Cleveland, which has had a tram system for a century operating on dedicated track (not counting streetcars, which disappeared in the 50's). In time, the system expanded to three lines (including a line crossing the city to the airport), and recently to three "Bus Rapid Transit" lines. There are 41 conventional bus routes serving the city and county. One reason this system is viable is that in 1974 Cuyahoga County voters agreed to add a 1% sales tax dedicated to the regional transit authority, which supplies 75% its budget.

Just when the extension happens maybe make it cheaper than the bus. The Hop is a collosal waste of money, everything it does could be done better using busses. Laying permanent tracks restricts where it can travel and costs a fortune. This was an idea Milwaukee discarded 70 years ago. Even with free rides it serves fewer than 700 people per day and serves a very limited area. Operations also loose over 2 million dollars annually.
