Stalking the HOP Streetcar (Tram) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Wow, I’m actually really impressed by the excellent traffic signal priority that this line has! The line is pretty efficient because the trains don’t have to stop at every single traffic light - in fact they barely stop at any of them.
At 6:38, you can see a white flashing light above the traffic signal on the left side of the screen. This light means that the signals are being preempted and altered to give the streetcar the green light and allow it to keep moving. Almost every signaled intersection along this line has that flashing white light.
You can see the signal priority in action at 4:32. If you look to the left of the train in the distance, you can see that there’s a red light for the train at the next intersection. But, if you pay close attention, you’ll see the white signal priority light begin to flash as the train approaches the intersection. After a few seconds, the traffic signals turn green for the train, allowing it to continue through the intersection without stopping.
This kind of signal priority can really help to increase the speed and efficiency of streetcar lines, and Oklahoma City’s streetcar in particular has a lot to learn from this.

Surprising that a city the size of Milwaukie has a 2 mile tram route. Hopefully extensions are planned.

Fun fact: A new line will soon open in 2022, this will be called the L Line, from the looks of this upcoming line this will be the shortest line traveling to/from the Lakefront and City Hall as it connects to the M Line

@Daniel Chang I don't know, I'm not from Milwaukee, but it's current system map does show the L Line. Even when you go on Google Maps and street view the upcoming line, you can see the actual stations for that line

No it’s not cancelled. There’s going to be a BRT/Hop station in a building going up called the Couture. The city got all of its work done; however, the private developers had funding problems. It’s under construction now though.

I enjoyed the ride. The Hop will eventually go thru a 44 story apt/office complex by lakefront, Construction just started in May, 2021.

I'm from Australia and the only things I know about Milwaukee are beer, Germans, power tools and Happy Days. Therefore, it's great to see this. Very quiet downtown though - was this filmed on a Sunday morning?

Actually in the afternoon on Sunday - most people hang out around the market place (towards the end of the video where it makes a right turn)
