This is a very interesting discussion with vk. Since everything is so fashion and visual focused what the band looks like is important. On the flip side I don't think I've ever met anyone who listened to a band that didn't fit their musical tastes simply for the members' looks.
it’s definitely a part of it (hence the name VISUAL kei) but i don’t think it’s necessarily *everything*
i definitely think people try to make themselves like bands because of hot people, but eventually they’ll find someone just as hot who makes good music and start liking them
i saw eishin, a member of kaneto juusei, and i was like wow he’s hot and started listening to kaneto juusei and i love their music now. so i definitely got into them because of attraction but i genuinely love their music now
There was this anonymous confession I saw on Twitter some weeks ago, who chided fans for not appreciating vkei musicians for being the excellent musicians they are, but rather just thirsting over them. To that I say: we can multitask! I happily and readily confess that I got into JILUKA because their striking looks caught my eye, but I’m also incredibly lucky in that I was also beginning to dip a toe into metal, and their music happened to have a sound that ended up being to my budding taste! I have similarly discovered other vkei bands through visuals/looks, and some of their music was not quite what I liked, and some of them were, and that’s just how it is sometimes.
I agree that getting into a band just _for_ their visual (rather than for their music eventually) is quite silly - but you’re right that that’s honestly unsustainable to remain a strong fan anyway. I dunno, I find it very funny whenever I see people deride others who start to get into a band through the visuals. It’s _visual_ kei, after all; who would’a thunk?!
Also, re: Malice Mizer I got into vkei through that band and ENTIRELY through visual. Mana was the producer for Kanon Wakeshima, who both wore gothic lolita fashion super prettily, and so of course my pipeline into the fashion style led me to Mana led me to Malice Mizer led me to the larger world of vkei in general. Visuals have power, and that’s not a bad thing!
Savette speaking straight up facts! lol Just want to say thank you for spreading the VK love on YT. Been listening to it since early the 2000s and it's nice to see others showing so much passion for this great style. D'espairs Ray for life, baby!

jokes aside, when i was growing up, i was pretty picky when it came to who i listened on a regular. they not only needed to be hot, but they couldn't be too fem for a teen boy to listen to, so bands like SHAZNA or kaya were out. now i don't really give a shit and love izam, my beloved, w all my heart. and that's literally from scruffing myself by the neck to listen to SHAZNA without visuals just so that i focused on the music because he was just so fem, that cutie
I'm straight but I remember first getting into Dir En Grey checking out their early videos and thought they were hot because I legit thought they were women lol I freaked out! I also thought Exist Trace was hot and was relieved to find out they are actually women lol.
the contrary happens too, for instance when I was a teen I couldn't stand Kamijo I thought he looked too pompous and pretentious, he unnerved me and most of all I couldn't stand his voice therefore I couldn't get into any projects he was in ...recently I got into vk again and a friend of mine who's a big fan of him sent me links of his latest musics and it was actually great! I realized how I didn't give a real chance to his music, I found out his voice improved too and he wasn't as pretentious as I thought...and I even got into some songs from Lareine, even despite his more juvenile voice, I never thought I would get into their music...I'm not a fangirl of him but I acknowledge his talent and I was biased

Sometimes it's a hit or miss imo
I tried Kizu back in 2019, watched the Steriod MV, didn't like it at all
-> I only listened to Versailles and Babykingdom at the time, so Kizu was a big leap tbfh
I did really like the drummer's looks (Kyonosuke), so I kinda lowkey kept up with them solely for that guy, just not the music, only pictures
Never followed any of the members, just had a peek at new release posts on JRO and such
I did however save Kyonosuke's pics on my phone to show to people bc he just looked that cool
Fast forward to June this year when Oni dropped, I saw the pictures and thought they all looked really cool, especially Lime (I have obsessions with kimonos, yes I'm also a big Kiryu fan)
Tried out the band again with this MV

i dont like Jiluka's music but damn they are one fine band.. I've tried so hard to enjoy them for their music lmao
It's a big thing yes. but strangely my most favorite V-kei musician is あさき (in house under Konami / Bemani). His music is really great. MV's have some good visuals. but for his entire career of around 22 years (2001-present) , he's never shown his face in in any public medium except that one song where he appeared for a mere couple of seconds 天庭 おとこのこ編 (2010. full song came out around 2013 天庭 Has a music video but only featured 2 dancers and not a single frame of him in it.) as well as other fan leaks from meet and greet events that are very few. Sorry ended up in a tangent where I share about the guy. he's kinda obscure since he's confined under the veil of competitive rhythm games.
I honestly love Lynch, first song i ever heard was devil. Yes there mostly beautiful humans, but I'm not going to listen to something just cause there hot if the music sucks.

Jiluka and Lyrica. Love Usagi's visuals are cool, just don't favour his vocals and Jiluka is just straight metal and no variation so it''s hard to get into.
I don't like jilukas music at all. But can agree that the members are really well dressed and visually applying. As much I want. I cant seem to dig their musical style at all. :(
Check out Cultic My Execution for Lynch song. It's my favorite by them and very underrated and unique song in their discography.
I think Visual kei is about looks before music. It's called VISUAL kei after all.

@@Savette_ lol this is off topic but i remember before I got into visual kei I got into music through anime and it was because the opening and outro animation and the characters looking all badass and now in retrospect i realized thats the same as visual kei. The badass looking people or characters add value and badassness to the music and brainwashes me into liking the music even more
I got into lynch. around 2020-2021 because of a past co-worker's recommendation, and I had the same feelings about Hazuki LOL but musically they've been one of my favorite bands to listen to since!

I’m really worried that other vkei fans will think I’m a poser, cuz I’m kinda new to vkei and don’t know as much as they do, like, I love the gazette I have some of their cds and plan to get more, but what if I’m a poser?? What if I just like them bc they look cool? Well actually when I first got into them I didn’t think they look cool, but still- I am still trying to get into vkei more but I just don’t like buck tick or malice mizer that much
loud kei is definitely the subgenre you should look into. Your not a poser for being new and not liking certain popular/wellknown bands. Theres been a tone of new wave fans as of late too so you definitely won't be alone in that aspect.
One band I liked had weird visuals but I loved their music so I guess I don’t usually pay attention to just looks but maybe I’m just the odd one here
