    It's very interesting how people see it as an insult to be considered averagely attractive and think it's humble to call yourself a 7 or even higher.

      It is just delusional tbh. The vast majority of us are in the middle area of the bell curve within many aspects of our lives, attractiveness, skills, personality, profession, etc...WIth the most basic understanding of statistics, unless you're really sure, putting yourself within that 4-6 range has like 80% of being objectively correct

      Yep. I'm someone who has literally been told several times that I "could model" by women and still only think i'm a 6/10. I can't imagine how guys who are less attractive than me who don't get these types of compliments could possibly think they're 7+/10. Same for women lol.

    • @AdamLighter1
      @AdamLighter1 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were told you could model, then you are definitely not a 6 and are very likely to be higher than 7.5, probably pushing 9. So you may be delusional but in the opposite sense, that you lower your attractiveness.@@thelonercoder5816

      It’s probably because of people viewing the spectrum as if it’s a grade, in which 70% is equated as a C and treated as a decently average score, whereas anything below that is failing. Therefore, 6 and below is terrible, and 7 is average

    • @jones2277

    the issue is the people are answering a different question than what they're being asked.
    they're being asked "where do you think you statistically belong on a scale from 0 to 10"
    and they're answering "how do you feel about your body image on a scale from 0 to 10"
    basically there is a validity issue in your sociological research because you are measuring something else than what you think you are. the research is, in my opinion, invalid. maybe the findings could be used to explore how people mix up the two

    • @CaptainPanick
      @CaptainPanick ปีที่แล้ว +199

      I completely agree. The question specifically asks how they rate their *looks* on a scale from 1 to 10 (at 0:23), not how confident or attractive they see themselves. I think they should have clarified the question or they should have guided the subjects beforehand. They could also ask a follow-up question on how they view their overall attractiveness. The way this was handled makes the results pretty useless and shows how easy it is to miss the obvious problems in such a survey.

    Huge issue with this social experiment being how the question was asked - the fact that so many of them are bringing up confidence and personal anecdotes shows that they’re not trying to rate themselves realistically in a logical distribution. They’re answering about how they feel about themselves, which is a totally different question than “how attractive do you think you are objectively respective to the rest of the world”

    • @sweetxjc
      @sweetxjc ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah, but if you’re attract a lot of people regardless of the “objective” standard. You are attractive so the rating is right.
      Also there really isn’t an objective standard it’s influenced a lot by culture, your personal age, what other people say, social media, and trends.

    • @nicelypenn
      @nicelypenn ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@sweetxjc If there was no objective standard, then there would not be a tendency of models to have similar features. All models are tall. All models are lean. All models have sharp eyes and defined jaws. All models have decent hairlines. All models have very clear skin. All models have well-sized lips. All models have good jaw projection.
      Moreover, these things are on a scale themselves. As in they're normally distributed, so the degree to which you fall into the upper percentiles indicates the degree to which you are model-tier looking. Models are in the 99th percentile for every one of those features. People who are average either are average in all those aspects or they're in the upper percentiles for some features and in the lower percentile for others.
      Most of the people in the video had some decent qualities but also had major flaws that would make them lean more toward average. Other people were below average. E.g. no person with a recessed jaw is ever going to be at or above a 5. Also, a lot of them were fat. So, that drops you down by 1 to 2 points by default.

    Nothing's inherently wrong with overrating yourself. It's only wrong when you do that while looking down on others. Hell, it's wrong to look down on others even if you're indeed a 9 or a 10, yet these people in the comments would give you a pass simply because you're that good-looking. People think overrating yourself implies looking down on others when that's not necessarily the case.

    • @agme8045
      @agme8045 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      No one thinks that lol. People in the comments simply are calling out on how these average-looking people at best, rate themselves rather high on the scale, and give all of these excuses about how they are comfortable in the own skin and they are very confident, when that’s literally not the point of the video or the question. They are supposed to objectively rate their attractiveness, and the only way of doing that is literally comparing the way you look to how others look. It’s not about getting a passing grade, it’s about truthfully stating your level of attractiveness. Your face is a 5 regardless of how confident you are. The people were literally saying “I know other people would rate me lower but I think I’m an 8”, THATS THE WHOLE POINT lol how would others rate you, how would most people perceive you.

    • @kiravampira1456

      Overrating yourself *does* imply that you expect a certain treatment from others. I've seen and heard of *countless* males in the 1-3/10 category acting as if not only they *deserved* women in the 8-10 category, but also that "they shouldn't compensate by providing" for such women. Nothing short of delusional.

    • @janetuss6496
      @janetuss6496 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No, I think a lot of people would look negatively at over-rating because it's an indication that you're not able to assess things more objectively, truthfully, rationally, realistically. It's an indication that you're not able to be fine with reality. And this is not a positive thing. Someone who can truthfully admit they are a 4 and be totally fine with it is someone who is actually confident and rational.

      There was a documentary that did something similar, and what was most shocking is that the women (there were no men in the experiment) just rated the model higher. The researchers' hypothesis (which I agree with) was that rating yourself as a 6~7 is safe. It is above 5 which is average (and no one wants to be average) but not so high like an 8 or 9 which would cause them to face reality in the form of negative criticism from objective observers of their beauty.
      Anyway the model used was about a 7.5~8 but because most of the women wanted to label themselves as a 7 they knew standing next to another 7 would instantly make them a lair so they rated the model as a 10... Oh, and the reason I said the model was a 7.5~8 is because of another prior experiment in which they had a few hundred people rate the model from 1-10.
      Personally, I thought most of the women fell into the average range 4~5, so I don't know why they were so determined to be 7's.... Seriously! Ask any unfortunate person whose looks rate about 2~3.5, and they would LOVE to be considered at least average (5 out 10) looking.

    Long story short:
    * People broadly agree on who is attractive and who is not, but when it comes to you: 7 is the magic number. Most people rate themselves 7 out of 10, and also consider it to be the threshold for dating.
    * Implication is: less attractive people see themselves as more attractive, and more attractive people see themselves as less attractive. "Just above average" attractive people are aligned with external perception.
    * Most people over-rate themselves possibly because of 1/ exposure effect (the more you see sb, the more you like it), 2/ self-deception for confidence boost (which leads to more romantic success), 3/ focusing on different traits to judge oneself vs. others.
    * We prefer to be judged on our looks by strangers than our peers. It is less threatening.
    * Beyond looks, confidence and good personality are seen as attractive. And over-confident people have a competitive advantage.
    Cheers.

Most of their videos are pretty good but there are some where opinions definetly diverge. Point is don't believe everything at a whim. Especially for something which can be as subjective as beauty. @@andy2641 You have no clue what you are talking about. Of course attractiveness is subjective but that has nothing to do with it.
      When someone asks you to rate someone from 1-10, you are supposed to give them a number from 1 to 10 where the average person will be a 5. But due to most people being people-pleasers and also seem to lack understanding of the entire concept. The majority of people will rate with extreme biases, where most people will be 7s or even 8s. This is foolishness and completely illogical, and no it doesn't mean that they think the "average person is pretty". It means that the average is 7-8 instead which doesn't make any sense. This kills the entire idea of the scale because it will be completely distorted and it means the actual attractive people (those who are real 8s or 9s) will barely be differentiated by the average and slightly above average because there is no room in the scale.
      You bringing up other scales like Richter scale which is a completely different thing just shows your lack of knowledge. FYI Richter scale is not even a linear scale, it's a logarithmic scale which also doesn't have any limits.

It doesn't mean they think they're extremely good-looking. Their scale is just different.

    if you take the same interview with the people of south asian countries, i believe majority of them would rate themselves quite lower in compared to them. It again comes down to childhood and how you were raised. Most asian people are raised with strict parents and with less validations. For instance the parents kind of force their childs to achieve the perfect grades on everything. That's why asian people are never quite comfortable with their self worth. Always in the competition of acheiving that perfect position. Thats why have less self-esteem and arrogance in compared to people of the west like we can see in the video.

    The problem is not that people overrate themselfs, its the 10 rating itself.
    What is a 1, what is a 10.
    Is 5 absolute average?
    Is a mega super model a 10? Or do we consider them above that because nobody looks like that?
    The rating is not able to be represantive of a real beauty standard, it discribes only how well people feel in their body.

    This subject is really interesting because it brings in other topics that can be related to it suck as
    If you rate yourself higher than average some would judge you or call you selfish or too confident or arrogant.
    And the people that rate themselves lower would be seen as not confident or shy or "a pick me"
    So the whole thing comes down to how you see yourself and how others see you and that can be poisoning
    As it can either make you too aware or careless and other people's opinions matter to almost everyone even if they say they don't care what others say.
    So in short this topic is very wide as it can be seen both positively and negatively and no matter what not everyone can come to an agreement on it in a lot of points
    Great video it's really interesting seeing how people view themselves and view others in their life.

    I think people are forgetting what actual “confidence” is. Confidence should be the absolute belief in something that is actually true. If you’re ugly but confident, that doesn’t mean you lie to yourself and tell yourself you’re beautiful. It means you know you’re ugly but you’re perfectly fine with it and it doesn’t bother you or matter to you in the slightest. And I think THAT is actually 100000% more attractive than being delusional.
