Thank you for all the wonderful information on orchids. I have two orchids in my north kitchen window over the sink where I can watch them closely. One, my granddaughter gifted me on Mother’s Day ( my absolute favorite) three years ago, and it has a spike with buds on it now. When I first got it, I dutifully put ice cubes on top once a week per instructions but because I knew very little about orchids decided to research and discovered that was a big NO! NO! 😳 🌺 Your videos have taught me much and I want to say thank you!

One thing I noticed that books don’t tell you is that there are plenty of orchid species that can survive near or even below freezing conditions. A lot of the orchids we grow in our homes and gardens come from high mountain ranges (like The Himalayas or The Andes) and it regularly snows in those places. So the temperature has to be at freezing or even below for to work. In fact, some orchids (Draculas and Masdevallias) are so well adapted to cold conditions they can’t survive in the heat. And, besides, I have seen orchids in the mountains of temperate Eastern Australia (I live in Eastern Australia) that are growing in temperatures that wouldn’t reach 10C (40F) at midday in winter and would almost certainly be below freezing at night.

Your videos sparked my orchid obsession! I began with tiny Haraella Retrocalla (what a plant to start with right? 😂) and could never find videos in English to help me. I had to learn what works best in my South Texas humid climate instead of blindly following 'one size fits all' advice. I learned mounted orchids do much better with minimum moss on inorganic mounts with humidity trays underneath, and I had to learn that phals were not the easiest in my climate. Though I do have two minis and 2 Bellinas 😊. I do much better with Cattleyas, Dendrobiums and Vandas, which I would have NEVER purchased had it not been for you! I also stopped trying to rescue grocery store phals as I didn't like my heart getting broken. I have learned to repot large phals immediately as mine have all died due to the stupid seedling plug they leave hidden in the bark, that I never notice until I have stem rot...then a lot of worry, then a dead orchid. I also loosen the sphag in mini-phals from the store, while they're still blooming (as long as the roots are healthy, otherwise I repot immediately, even if they are in bloom or bud) and then transfer them to bark AND moss, layered, which is so amazing and helps prevent transplant shock, even though moss scared me for a year. Also to NEVER over-water in my climate. Repotme's MSU fertilizer and rainwater have helped SO much, even with some African Violets I acquired from my AV obsessed mother 😅. I have more blooms on my African Violets than most and they add some beauty and cheeriness while I wait for orchid blooms. Now I'm off to find a video about dendrobium keikis as I have one attached to a single pseudobulb (sp?) That I sunburned the leaf on....and the keiki's roots are nearly to the not-so-great media. Thank you for taking so much time to make these videos and share your tips, tricks and ideas. I have a feeling 2022 will be full of beautiful orchid blooms! (She has over 30 orchids in her collection) After wiping out half her collection I happen to come across your channel. Thank you, you save me from killing off her collection. She left her orchid collection in my care because she bedridden now. So it a honor for me to be trusted in caring of her prize collection. I just didn’t learned quick enough to take care of her orchid that is until I came across Danny web site. She was great in explaining the in and out of orchids care. Awesome tips as always, I will definitely try layering moss and bark with perlite next repotting! I have been doing moss poles for my vining aroids and pothos and it's been a success. Feeling more confident with the sphagnum moss, thanks Dani and have a great new year filled with more plants! :)

Hi Dani, great tips for the orchid growers! I agree with the cutting the spent flower spike on complex phals. I always like to get new and fuller bloom spike than the secondary spike. I also like the layering the media ( in my case I mix the inorganic media ) , but I would like to try your layering method with phals ( I grow in organic and inorganic media for different orchids). I decided with my giant phals I cut one of the plants spikes and left the other plants spike. The one I cut has not even started growing a new spike even after months. The one I left has produce two extra spikes on the old spike. I wanted to see what would happen so this was a nice experiment.
You are Incredible 😍 Thank you so much MissOrchidGirl I collected 2 orchids that were in really bad condition and managed to successfully save one purely due to your videos. The other is still getting there, sadly it lost all its leaves but has a strong root system. I think I failed as I left the Spike on this one and this used up a lot of the ‘energy’ without giving back. Today I have removed the Spike and 🤞 it will live. 1 question, I’ve left some roots exposed in order for them to get some sun now, should I give them a spray of water often?
Hi, if the roots exposed used to be potted, they might suffer a shock due to all the air and fast drying out and dye out. If they were 'aerial' they will be ok, but misting them is not necessary since there are many roots inside the pot. The orchid will still suffer set back, tiny leaves at first, but it will pick up! Each new leaf will be a bit bigger than the previous! So fingers crossed the axis is ok, if it is, it will be a very rewarding recovery. Good luck and enjoy the process!
Do you have a video on how to mount an orchid to bark or something to create a more natural look? And, if so, how does it compare to keeping an orchid in a pot? Is it healthier for the orchid or the same as having it in a pot?

Your layering of mediums in the pot is just the info I needed. I was only able to find Espoma potting mix for orchids where I live, and just used that. It is nearly impossible to have it not dry out in a day. Will it hurt my Phals if I once again repot them using this layering method? Also, should I discard the Espoma and order from Repotme, online?
Hi, I never used the Espoma mix, but if it consists of bark, or other chunky pieces, you can use it! Just mix it with some sphagnum moss, maybe layer it like I show in this video. You can also search for my repotting videos for the last 2 and a half years or so to see how I actually repot and you should have a much easier time with water frequency! good luck!
Layering seems to be working for me here in Andalucia. I Have been having lots of root rot/loss issues. Moss and bark is making water more easy to control. I have been getting wet patches and the summer heat provokes many moulds.

Let's talk about the rules of division. The rule is 2 growths and a new/er growth. However. I have divided dendrobiums and have had them keiki as cuttings and single canes. I think new growth is key with division. They will surprise you! I cut a cane off a dendrobium burana white and it decided to spike/bloom instead of keiki its a fat cane too sobit can still keik after blooming. crazy!
Hi, not all orchids are as vigorous, the rules are very broad and general, as to not chop up your orchid. So things can be adapted to each orchid, doing small divisions on Miltoniopsis will be a brutal massacre, on Dendrobiums not so much hehe 😁
@@MissOrchidGirl you are right. I would never hack up a vanda or a phalaenopsis in sections to propagate it. With oncidium types multiple bulbs are required for optimum growing division and timing repotting/mounting is important.
My vanda is completely dried out and no roots or leaves… I really neglected it.. still holding on to it 😩 I’m sure it’s beyond repair but I can’t get myself to throw it away!
I have started cutting the flower spikes of my orchids based on what you said about energy, it makes good sense, but have you heard of taking those flower spikes and growing new plants from them? Any experience? I would love to see a video about this?
@@MissOrchidGirl well, it was a video on an orchid growers channel where they took a flower spike, wrapped it in live sphagnum moss and placed it in a glass vase to create a greenhouse effect. They said it took 2-3 months and showed baby plants growing from spikes they did this with previously. So you are saying this is not possible?
I have a question about the Phalaenopsis orchid, with all the roots, in tip 5…. Is it time to repot it when it has roots going everywhere? I have a couple like that so I was just wondering.
Hi Dani, I am a beginner I love orchids, but in the past I didn't know much so all my plants died, I have started again. I don't go to the stores much because of Covid, I need bark, and other stuff for the pot, what can I use from the yard?
Hi, better not. Orchid bark (or even bark for reptiles) is treated and will last you at least 2 years. It's also free of most pathogens and pests. I would wait it out a bit, or try to order something online! Bark from nature can be very risky and when using traditional methods of sanitation it can degrade even more, making it unsuitable for orchids long term. Good luck!
Danny, have you tried tree fern fibers as substrate to grow orchids? The other growing medium I noticed is vermiculite, some say it doesn't contain salt so it's great for orchids. I want to find people's review on using them on orchids, but I can't find much info regarding this unfortunately.
Just new at growing orchids ,I’ve been watering and feeding it every week half strength I water from the top and let it sit in water for 15 mins I notice my roots look like there shivilled up should I cut them off

Sorry to butt in.... While slotted pots are easy to come by here in the US, Dani showed a process of using a soldering iron to poke holes in plastic pots. It has made things much more inexpensive for me as I must have excellent airflow in my climate. I quickly melt the hole into it and if it is the thinner plastic, I can get the excess plastic around the holes off with my fingernail, and they almost look like I bought them that way! A hot glue gun with no glue in it of course, also works! Hope that helps...wishing you all the best!

When cutting phal spikes, do you do the same for polychilos types? I have a few with unruly tangles of spikes but I leave them alone. Wondering if I cut some polychilos I would have a straight flush of blooms on the new spike.
Hi, no, polychilos types are good with balancing the number of flowers per energy reserve hehe yes some will have a mess with their spikes, it is up to you if you'd like to cut some to tidy up the plant. The tetraspis is known to be messy like that. It's ok either way, new spikes will grow throughout the seasons, some older spikes might just stop blooming altogether, I would cut those and leave the newer ones :) There's no wrong or right, however you feel better about it is ok!
I appreciate all your videos. However, I wish you would redo the repotting video for beginners. You don’t mention putting Spagnum Moss at the bottom or in between as you do here. I transplanted my orchids the way you suggested and they are drying out, the roots get dry very fast and I have to water it all the time, not sure if that’s right. Anyway thanks.

I decided with my giant phals I cut one of the plants spikes and left the other plants spike. The one I cut has not even started growing a new spike even after months. The one I left has produce two extra spikes on the old spike. I wanted to see what would happen so this was a nice experiment.

I collected 2 orchids that were in really bad condition and managed to successfully save one purely due to your videos.
The other is still getting there, sadly it lost all its leaves but has a strong root system. I think I failed as I left the Spike on this one and this used up a lot of the ‘energy’ without giving back.
Today I have removed the Spike and 🤞 it will live.
1 question, I’ve left some roots exposed in order for them to get some sun now, should I give them a spray of water often?
Hi, if the roots exposed used to be potted, they might suffer a shock due to all the air and fast drying out and dye out. If they were 'aerial' they will be ok, but misting them is not necessary since there are many roots inside the pot. The orchid will still suffer set back, tiny leaves at first, but it will pick up! Each new leaf will be a bit bigger than the previous! So fingers crossed the axis is ok, if it is, it will be a very rewarding recovery. Good luck and enjoy the process!
Do you have a video on how to mount an orchid to bark or something to create a more natural look? And, if so, how does it compare to keeping an orchid in a pot? Is it healthier for the orchid or the same as having it in a pot?

Your layering of mediums in the pot is just the info I needed. I was only able to find Espoma potting mix for orchids where I live, and just used that. It is nearly impossible to have it not dry out in a day. Will it hurt my Phals if I once again repot them using this layering method? Also, should I discard the Espoma and order from Repotme, online?
If the plants are healthy leave them alone. If not try it. It has worked for me especially with struggling orchids.
Hi, I never used the Espoma mix, but if it consists of bark, or other chunky pieces, you can use it! Just mix it with some sphagnum moss, maybe layer it like I show in this video. You can also search for my repotting videos for the last 2 and a half years or so to see how I actually repot and you should have a much easier time with water frequency! good luck!
Layering seems to be working for me here in Andalucia. I Have been having lots of root rot/loss issues. Moss and bark is making water more easy to control. I have been getting wet patches and the summer heat provokes many moulds.

Let's talk about the rules of division. The rule is 2 growths and a new/er growth. However. I have divided dendrobiums and have had them keiki as cuttings and single canes. I think new growth is key with division. They will surprise you! I cut a cane off a dendrobium burana white and it decided to spike/bloom instead of keiki its a fat cane too sobit can still keik after blooming. crazy!
Hi, not all orchids are as vigorous, the rules are very broad and general, as to not chop up your orchid. So things can be adapted to each orchid, doing small divisions on Miltoniopsis will be a brutal massacre, on Dendrobiums not so much hehe 😁
@@MissOrchidGirl you are right. I would never hack up a vanda or a phalaenopsis in sections to propagate it. With oncidium types multiple bulbs are required for optimum growing division and timing repotting/mounting is important.
My vanda is completely dried out and no roots or leaves… I really neglected it.. still holding on to it 😩 I’m sure it’s beyond repair but I can’t get myself to throw it away!
I have started cutting the flower spikes of my orchids based on what you said about energy, it makes good sense, but have you heard of taking those flower spikes and growing new plants from them? Any experience? I would love to see a video about this?
Hi, yep I heard of that, it's clickbait 😜 a keiki depends on the mother plant for energy to grow until it produces roots.
@@MissOrchidGirl well, it was a video on an orchid growers channel where they took a flower spike, wrapped it in live sphagnum moss and placed it in a glass vase to create a greenhouse effect. They said it took 2-3 months and showed baby plants growing from spikes they did this with previously. So you are saying this is not possible?
Yep! You can get something developing, but getting it to survive all the way.. naah I would not hold my breath 😆

Hi Dani, I am a beginner I love orchids, but in the past I didn't know much so all my plants died, I have started again. I don't go to the stores much because of Covid, I need bark, and other stuff for the pot, what can I use from the yard?
Hi, better not. Orchid bark (or even bark for reptiles) is treated and will last you at least 2 years. It's also free of most pathogens and pests. I would wait it out a bit, or try to order something online! Bark from nature can be very risky and when using traditional methods of sanitation it can degrade even more, making it unsuitable for orchids long term. Good luck!
Danny, have you tried tree fern fibers as substrate to grow orchids? The other growing medium I noticed is vermiculite, some say it doesn't contain salt so it's great for orchids. I want to find people's review on using them on orchids, but I can't find much info regarding this unfortunately.
I used Repot me orchid medium on two of my orchids and one of them lost its roots and isn’t doing well.
Just new at growing orchids ,I’ve been watering and feeding it every week half strength I water from the top and let it sit in water for 15 mins I notice my roots look like there shivilled up should I cut them off

While slotted pots are easy to come by here in the US, Dani showed a process of using a soldering iron to poke holes in plastic pots. It has made things much more inexpensive for me as I must have excellent airflow in my climate. I quickly melt the hole into it and if it is the thinner plastic, I can get the excess plastic around the holes off with my fingernail, and they almost look like I bought them that way! A hot glue gun with no glue in it of course, also works! Hope that helps...wishing you all the best!

When cutting phal spikes, do you do the same for polychilos types? I have a few with unruly tangles of spikes but I leave them alone. Wondering if I cut some polychilos I would have a straight flush of blooms on the new spike.
Hi, no, polychilos types are good with balancing the number of flowers per energy reserve hehe yes some will have a mess with their spikes, it is up to you if you'd like to cut some to tidy up the plant. The tetraspis is known to be messy like that. It's ok either way, new spikes will grow throughout the seasons, some older spikes might just stop blooming altogether, I would cut those and leave the newer ones :) There's no wrong or right, however you feel better about it is ok!

They sometimes do that, maybe wait for the flowers to age a bit and they will become white :)

I appreciate all your videos. However, I wish you would redo the repotting video for beginners. You don’t mention putting Spagnum Moss at the bottom or in between as you do here. I transplanted my orchids the way you suggested and they are drying out, the roots get dry very fast and I have to water it all the time, not sure if that’s right. Anyway thanks.
