    Technically, this was Rod Stewart's solo release when he was still the lead vocal of The Faces, covering this Temptations' classic, but instead of having his studio band play the song, everyone from the Faces showed up and played. So it was a Rod Stewart song in the name only. The Faces even played this song live, and I think there is a great live jam version of it somewhere on TH-cam.

    • @dkroll92
      @dkroll92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also note that Ronnie Wood from the Faces did play on pretty much every track on Rod's albums of that era, so really his solo albums are 2/5ths of the Faces

      @@dkroll92 True. Ronnie Wood was indispensable to Rod Stewart's early career. Him on electric guitar and Martin Quittenton on acoustic guitar helped create the landmark early Rod Stewart sound ("Gasoline Alley", "Maggie May", "You Wear It Well", "Mandolin Wind"). When Rod and Ronnie reunited for the MTV Unplugged, it was so beautiful I actually cried watching it on MTV.

    I couldn't click on this fast enough. I was one of the persistent ones. I grew up in Motown and although I like the original version this is my favorite version. If I remember correctly, and if I don't I know someone will correct me, this was written by the legendary Holland/Dozier/Holland. I knew this would get Jamel moving. Jamel my brother you have entered one hell of a rabbit hole with Rod Stewart. Stay With Me is next in my opinion. Gotta stop writing now or I will be writing for a week.

    My best friend and I went to see The Faces live when we were about 16 y.o. They head-lined and Jeff Beck and Aerosmith were also playing (along with someone opening we'd never heard of before). Rod & The Faces got arrested for destroying their hotel rooms and weren't going to be able to play. Jeff Beck was going to play a double set. We went and got a refund (I mean the tickets cost like 8 bucks). Aerosmith had just released Dream On so we weren't too hip to them. We liked Jeff Beck, but we'd come to see Rod. Still love them though

      The other members of Faces, especially Ronnie Wood, were essentially the core of the backing musicians on Rod's early solo records. Rod had 2 recording contracts at the same time. A solo deal (which he signed before he joined Small Faces), and a band deal (for Small Faces, shortened to "Faces"). Rod has repeatedly thanked Faces for not just allowing, but actually HELPING him start his solo career while in that band.

    Another great Faces song is "Stay with Me". Definitely need a Live performance of the young Rod Stewart & Ron Wood. Rod is 75, still performing (and, still playing soccer) & Ron is 73 & still playing with the Rolling Stones since 1994. These guys have been performing for 50 years. It's amazing the talent that came out of the 60's & 70's. I can't imagine many performers today that will survive the test of time. We had such an abundance of great music during that time and many of the bands, solo artists, musicians are still performing today. I never saw Faces in concert but I was lucky enough to see Rod as a solo artist several times back in the 70's and eighties. Memorable times.

    Back in the British Invasion days, there was a little Mod band called, The Small Faces. (and they were all little guys - but mighty!) Of all the bands from that time, they were without a doubt the most authentically soulful....and the Mods were crazy about American Soul. When Steve Marriott left the group, it took two blokes to replace him! Enter, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. Now they were simply the Faces and they had the "battle-hardened" nucleus of The Small Faces to build upon. The chemistry couldn't have been better, they were a terrific band.

    For one of the bands that doesn't get enough credit for being a forerunner of heavy metal, check out the Jeff Beck Group, which had a young Rod Stewart on vocals, and Ron Wood, who played guitar for The Faces on bass. Their first album "Truth" came out in 1968, before Led Zeppelin, but that version of the Jeff Beck Group only lasted for two albums. This was in the period when rock groups were adding distortion and volume to music with blues roots, with the help of guitar effects and amplifier technology. Try "Let Me Love You", or "I Ain't Superstitious" from Truth, or "Plynth" from Beck Ola.
