I'm sure you'll have been given the full story by now anyway, but Faces started life as The Small Faces, a 60's R&B/Psychedlic band which was a four-piece until Steve Marriott (vocal and guitar) quit to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton and a few others, leaving Ronnie Lane (bass & vocals), Ian McLagan (keyboards) and Kenny Jones (drums) at a loose end. Ron Wood was well known on the London scene and was drafted in on guitar when he stopped playing bass in the Jeff Beck Group. his (believe it or not) rather shy mate, Rod, came along to listen - he'd also briefly been in the Jeff Beck Group, having previously been in a band called Steampacket and having been auditioned way back as lead singer for the Kinks and later, apparently, Led Zeppelin. Eventually, Kenny took him down the pub and asked him if he wanted to join the band - the reply may or may not have been "Is the Pope a Catholic?"
They got a deal with Warner Bros but (genuinely coincidentally) only just after Rod had been signed by Mercury. In the early years this didn't matter - Faces backed Rod on his solo albums and Rod became the main, (though not only) singer on Faces albums & singles. Rod's records were inclined a little more to the souly/folky side, while Faces were more straight up good-time rock & roll, but it was largely seamless.
Lacking self confidence in the early days, they started having a few drinks in the pubs & clubs in which they were playing before jumping up on stage and giving it large. This led to their not wholly undeserved reputation as the booziest band on the planet - they were the sort of lads who would gatecrash their OWN parties. Live, they played what they loved and they loved what they played; soulful bluesy boozy rock'n'rolly call it what you want as long as it's FUN. This endeared them to whoever was fortunate enough to be a member of their audience, but didn't go down with "serious" music fans who were then getting into "Prog Rock" - I remember talking about them to someone at school who said: "Yeah, but they're just a good time band...." I thought: "WTF is wrong with having a good time?"
It didn't last - tensions grew between, particularly, Rod and Ronnie Lane; part musical, part (one suspects) differing amounts of money earned. Ronnie left to form his own band Slim Chance and unfortunately contracted MS before it got far, dying waaaay too young. Ron was seduced by MicknKeef into being the replacement for Mick Taylor and ever since has been hiding his enormous talent in the Rolling Stones. Roderick David Stewart seized his chance to start playing with those smooth American disco stylists, who would have been anathema to the other Faces, in a successful bid to become really, REALLY rich. Kenny joined the Who after Moon the Loon's death and Mac became everybody's favourite keyboard session man (and why not?)
Still, they were an insane amount of fun while they lasted and it still warms the heart to picture them, teetering gloriously on the edge of a spectacular wipeout, always triumphantly snatching it all back together just in the nick of time. Truly great, genuine, music lovers.

When lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott left the Small Faces to join Peter Frampton in forming Humble Pie, Rod Stewart came over from the Jeff Beck Group to provide lead vocals, and Ronnie Wood to provide guitar. The band then removed the "Small" from their name.
The "Ronnie Wood" is what's known as a "Shag cut", kind of like shag carpeting, very 70s.

This was Ronnie Wood’s band BEFORE he joined the Rolling Stones. He wasn’t part of the Stones in their 60s period, before Brian Jones died.
This was Rod Stewart’s best period, beyond doubt. I was 10 when he had his big year 1971, with this song included on his big hit album Every Picture Tells A Story. At that time he was a rock star, not a ladies man, and having his poster on my bedroom wall wasn’t weird at all - Rod, David Bowie and Elton John were there, side by side!

For singer Rod Stewart in an earlier and heavier blues/rock setting, hear him when he was the singer for the first version of the Jeff Beck Group on the 1968 album "Truth". That band was pre Zeppelin, and doesn't get enough credit for being one of the precursors of heavy metal. Ron Wood, who was on guitar here, was the bass player in that version of the Jeff Beck Group, and used to room with Stewart when they were on tour. In an interview, Jeff Beck said that he suggested Wood as a Stones guitarist to Mick Jagger, who wanted Beck to join the Stones. Beck, who was getting into fusion, knew he would never be happy in the Stones. One story of that first Jeff Beck Group is that after a show people would go up to Rod Stewart and say "Hey Jeff - I like your guitar player." See the TH-cam interviews of J.Beck by Alice Cooper for more stories. That band only lasted 2 albums - check out "Shapes", "Let Me Love You", and "I Ain't Superstitious" from the Truth album, and "Plynth" from the Beck-Ola album. Ron Wood still has the same "shag" haircut as Jeff Beck, and if you ever saw the movie "This Is Spinal Tap", the character of guitarist Nigel Tufnel (who's amp went up to 11) was supposed to look like Jeff Beck too.

@@SightAfterDark There is no way he would have wanted to give up his own musical direction in order to be Mick's lead guitarist, and play the same Stones hits night after night. He was more into instrumental music like Mahavishnu Orchestra by that time.

Interesting, this is the Faces but this song was never released on a Faces lp. It's from Rod Stewart's third solo album Every Picture Tells a Story and while Ron Wood did play lead guitar on the entire album, the other two, Bassist Ronnie Lane and Drummer Kenny Jones, didn't play on the album....except for one song. (I Know)I'm Losing You.

The other two were clearly top shelf and sadly one of them, the bass player, Ronnie Lane died of MS. I saw the fund raising concert for him back in 1983 in Dallas. Eric Clapton. Jeff Beck. to answer your question, during this time The Rolling Stones had Mick Taylor for five years after the passing of Brian Jones in 1969. It wasn't until MT left that The Stones asked Ronnie to join. When Brian died Ronnie was already a consideration to be his replacement but he was deep in The Faces with Rod Stewart and recording tracks, timing wasn't right at the time.

Ron Wood got to the Stones late. The Stones were originally Brian Jones' band. Sort of weird power struggle as they got called "Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones" but by the time Jones drowned (or was drowned, depending whom you believe) in the swimming pool, they had auditions (including Rory Gallagher) to replace whom they ended up with - the amazing Mick Taylor. Then they figured Ron Wood was a good fit. The greatest Stones era was probably with Taylor. Unless you're a Brian Jones person, which is fair enough. But Taylor always felt like a hired hand, eventually got sick of it and left. Then Ron Wood came in. No disrespect at all -- Wood melded with Keith Richards *great* -- but Ron Wood was already Ron Wood, from the Jeff Group and from Faces, long before the Stones needed him.

@@SightAfterDark I don't really have a firm opinion -- lack of info. But Jones did a lot of things to make a lot of people very angry. Including, evidently, some construction people who were working on his property. I don't remember details but there was the thought that one of these guys drowned him. Jones was evidently a *very* good swimmer -- this is one piece of "evidence" that there might have been foul play. But there are also possibly chemical agents that would mitigate ones swimming talent -- who knows.

Great reaction. I agree, early Rod Stewart numbers had such raw talent. I think you should try “I ain’t Superstitious” by the Jeff Beck Group, with Rod Stewart on vocals. It came out before his gig with the Faces.

Ronnie Wood (guitar) was with Rod Stewart, before he started playing with the Rolling Stones. Love that guy. This was a "Motown" Hit by Temptations? Four Tops? Anyway, it was from Motown in the late 60s I think.

Yes, EARLY 70s Rod Stewart is where it's AT! An icon of blue-eyed soul along with Daryl Hall, Joe Cocker, and early Todd Rundgren. Ron Wood, btw, starts as the original Jeff Beck Group BASS player (where Rod is lead vocalist), later forms Faces with Ian, Kenny, Rod, and Ronnie Lane, THEN later joins the Stones after Mick Taylor leaves.

Yeah, on paper covering The Temps may not have looked like a good idea; kinda like C.C.R. doing Gladys Knight and the Pips, and of course Marvin's 'Heard it through the Grapevine', but they each did justice to the respective songs. The Faces always just seemed loosey goosey on stage, but brought the soul. Great suggestion.

Small Faces became Faces when Rod replaced Steve Marriott. Guitarist Ron Woods later replaced Mick Taylor in the Stones. Drummer Kenny Jones replaced Keith Moon in the Who. Marriott went on to form Humble Pie. Faces were definitely in-crowd for UK rockers.

I thought Rod and Ronny snuck off for a pee together during that drum solo for a second....
I had a Ronnie Wood once.... damn thang wouldn't go away for 3 hours too..... baddonk dunk clunk... are we ever gonna get a drummer in here?
I keep forgetting how good Rod was back in the day..... his gravelly voice is always great but he really did get down and dirty and play the game in the muck and tumble too.
would've loved to hear Rod and Ronny struggle out a few more albums but.... some playas are bigger than the game..... props to them old Brits bringing back them delta blues.

They're so funky, so fun! How long since Rod and Ron(on bass) played with Jeff Beck? I don't know. McGlagan, Lane and Jones from Small Faces with Steve Marriott (on to Humble Pie). Picked the Who(By Numbers tour) over Faces' last...oh well, chose not to afford both. I'd completely forgotten this is the Temps(😂!) I used to do Ronnie Lane's 'You're So Rude', off Nod Is As Good As A Wink, he sings three, with Rod in the band! Loved his 'Evolution' off Pete Townshend's first solo album. Kenney Jones came in to the Who to take over for Keith Moon after his passing.

When you had to put the needle down on the turntable to play something over and over. Every player in this band is top of the world. Of course it’s a song written by the unsurpassable Temptations. Their version is also the best.

This was a cover of the Temptations. Rod is one of the best cover guys going. Rod messed up the lyrics all over this performance, but he hit the notes correctly. Studio version is better.
You guys should check out Faces song "Ooh La La". It has only two main chords and is also notable for the fact that in a band with great singers like Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane, they picked Ron Wood for the lyrics. His vocal imperfections make that song perfect.
