Rod Stewart (vocals), Ronnie Wood (now guitarist the Stones), Kenny Jones (joined The Who as drummer when Keith Moon died), Ronnie Lane (bass), Ian McLagan (keyboards). Brilliant English rock&roll band from the early '70s. And yes, most of the musicians played on Rod's early solo albums.
Rod Stewart got his start with the Jeff Beck Group on the Truth and Beck-Ola albums, some great rock albums. Ron Wood on bass, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, all appear on Jeff Beck's first two albums playing on various tracks. Some of the greatest talent in British rock.
Yep! And Don Arden threatened Jimmy Page telling him after the recording of "Beck Belero" to break this little group up or you'll have all your fingers broken! Nice guy...
Rod Stewart at his best! Yes indeed The Jeff Beck Group was great but I just love the funk that the 2 Ronnie's and Ian Mac laid down!! Kenny Jones as well! Rod Stewart never sang with as big a set of balls again once he left The Faces! Truly one hell of a band with bassist/singer/songwriter Ronnie Lane being the heart and soul of this band!
Rod Stewart signed a solo contract (1969) shortly before joining "Faces." His solo career took off about a year or so later, which both brought attention to the band and eventually overshadowed it. To his credit, Rod seemed to try to remain just one of the guys and put the band first, but promoters would do things like bill shows as "Rod Stewart and the Faces" to sell more tickets. This led to (founding member and I would say the heart of the band) Ronnie Lane leaving out of fear Rod would leave them. "Faces" were born out of the ashes of a pretty successful 60's band "The Small Faces (1965-69)." Ron Wood and Rod Stewart were brought in to replace Steve Marriot on guitar and vocals. Marriot had left the band to form "Humble Pie" with Peter Frampton.
I was blessed to have traveled with these boyz in 70-74. Boy, do I have the stories? Stewart and the Boyz were rockers and party animals in the late 60s and early 70s. Rod decided to do his own thing and Ronnie went to the Stones. I traveled with them in 71-73 when I was with Mercury Records. OMG, what a time I had. A single guy in his 20s, women up the A** every night. Parties and more parties. Running for cover and having police have to get us into our hotels. Guys I got stories for ya. I don't know how we survived a winter/spring and early Rod, Ron, Ronnie, Ian, and Kenny all raised a lot of hell. They along with Peter Buckland, Chooch, and some other roadies raised so so so much hell. IF ANYONE saw them they know what I am saying. Detroit was the most awesome though of all. Detroit LOVED The Faces. We used to have to register as Fleetwood Mac in the early days because Rod and Rod and the boyz partied it up and tore it down too hard in the early days. 1971 We started US Leg in FL on Feb 12 and we ended on Dec 17 in Chicago. I remember it all so well. Nevertheless, there were 88 dates US/Canada/UK/Germany/Austria/Belgium/France It wasn't an easy itinerary. It was split up and with all the partying and traveling. It was a memory of my lifetime.
@@aaparden IF I am remembering this right because I do remember Detroit and ALL my pals there. We were lucky to get into our hotel because it was swarmed outside. They all blend together but because of Detroit I remember.
Too cool! “Faces Love Detroit” with a big heart hung behind the stage. We had side stage seats, they played great! Rod tossed the mic stand around like it was a baton. The best of times.
The Rod Stewart - Jeff Beck album Truth is a classic. The Small Faces who had a great singer, probably one of the best British soul singers Steve Marriott of Humble Pie fame became the Faces after Steve left. Rod stepped in as singer.
They were kind of a supergroup the regular way, really. All the members already were successful before they joined together. Besides, only two of the members went on to play in (other) great bands. Although, I would argue Faces was a better band than the bands Ron and Kenney joined, while they were members.
You guys are bringing it hardcore lately! You know that I’m 60’s and 70’s rock junkie and y’all ain’t disappointing! They just don’t make music like this anymore!❤❤❤❤
The band was previously known as the Small Faces prior to Rod Stewart joining the band with Ronnie Wood. You should look into The Small Faces with Steve Marriott, he was a force of nature in the 60’s he then formed Humble Pie with Peter Frampton.
Before Rod they were the SMALL FACES...the ultimate MOD band. Steve Marriot left and formed Humble Pie with Peter Frampton so they grabbed Rod. The Small Faces were incredible too, "Song of a Baker" & "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" are amazing just to name a few!
I wish I could hear all this music again for the first time, just as you are. Faces were a great band, legendary talent, each and every one of them. Rod’s vocals were amazing. He’s one of the greats. 🔥
Great Band! Rod Stewart had an amazing run to start his career, the Jeff Beck Group, Faces and his first 5 solo albums are all great albums. To me he’s one of the best to ever do it but I think he’s so underrated.
Rod was in the Jeff Beck Group along with Ronnie Wood prior to joining up with former Small Faces members Ronnie Lane ,Ian MacLagen, and Kenney Jones. Wood joined the Rolling Stones after the Faces split , MacLagen later became the Stones touring keyboard player, Jones would replace Keith Moon in the Who. Lane formed Slim Chance but recorded an album with the Who’s Pete Townshend. He sadly died young from Multiple sclerosis.
Rod was in The Faces AT THE SAME TIME he was cranking out solo albums. The band backing him on his solo albums up until Atlantic Crossing in 1976 was also generally The Faces or individual members of the band.
If you want to check out some music from when Rod first became famous, you have to go even a little further back when he was singing in Jeff Beck's band. Jeff was the guy who introduced Rod Stewart to America when Jeff's band toured here. Try Jeff's album "Truth", which included Faces (and future Rolling Stone) guitarist Ron Wood playing some killer bass. It includes cameo performances by Keith Moon and half of what became Led Zeppelin. (I'll go to my grave convinced that Zeppelin's first album was HEAVILY influenced by "Truth".) Check out "Let Me Love You" from that album for a completely different vibe, a different style for Rod, but still as recognizable as he is today.
@@corawheeler9355 Ain't Superstitious is my favorite on that great album also. Early Rod was a great blues belter, but Jeff Becks guitar work in this song is too cool ✌
Jeff Beck Group in 67 (with Ronnie Wood), 1st solo lp in 69, also joined Faces together with Ronnie Wood (formerly Small Faces with Steve Marriott as lead vocalist) while simultaneously continuing with solo lps, Gasoline Alley in 70, Every Picture Tells A Story in 71 which made him a superstar. This tune is from A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse -- the 3rd Faces lp. Eventually, Ronnie Wood joined the Rolling Stones and drummer Kenney Jones joined The Who. When Marriott left Small Faces to form Humble Pie, he was replaced by Stewart and Wood and the name changed to just Faces. Before joining (Small) Faces, Stewart already had signed a solo contract. If you play the entire Nod lp, you will have a good time.
One of the greatest bands ever. Stewart, Kenny Lane on bass, Ron Wood on guitar, Kenny Jones on drums and Ian McLaglen on keys. Stewart went solo, Wood went to the Rolling Stones, Jones went to The Who. Lane died too early of MS. Stewart and Wood joined the band when Steve Marriott left. With Marriott the band was Small Face. They changed the name to Faces after the switch. Stewart and Wood were both with the Jeff Beck band before this, as I recall. For me Stewart was at his height when he was playing with these guys, even after he went solo, such as on the Every Picture Tells a Story album.
This song owns all KINDS of rock and roll memes--one of the best tunes ever! Not sure who, but an African-American male once said that he just assumed Rod was a Black American singer, 'cause of all the soul pouring out of that voice. He was gobsmacked to find out Stewart was a blonde boy from Great Britain!
Rod actually got his start with the Jeff Beck Group, in Jeff's first group after leaving The Yardbirds. When artists have been around for more than half a century they leave some tracks! (literally and figuratively) Peace!
Love the album by the Faces from 1970, "First Step." Two of my favorite songs on this: "Around the Plynth" and "Flying." Another great album is "Gasoline Alley." The old Rod Stewart music is his best, imo. Another request: Tower of Power; "You're Still a Young Man" and "Sparkling in the Sand," Thanks, guys!
Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck knew each other from childhood, so it's difficult to say which one influenced the other. Rod Stewart was Rod the Mod, and he first came to public notice on In A Broken Dream. The reason The Small Faces broke up was they were managed by Sharon Osborne's father, Don Arden, who ran his business like a gangster. The Small Faces weren't making any money, because Arden was taking it all, so they broke up as soon as the terrible contract they'd signed had expired. They couldn't get back together under a different name, so Stevie Marriott joined Peter Frampton in Humble Pie, and The Faces got a new lead singer - Rod Stewart. Meanwhile, Jimmy Page was around as a session musician, which was where he learned his trade as a guitarist, and learned from notable producers and engineers. When the New Yardbirds turned into Led Zeppelin, he was ready.
Kenney Jones, Ronnie Laine and Ian McLagan from the Small Faces joined Rod Stewart and Ron Wood (played in Jeff Beck Group together before) to create Faces. Steve Marriott went on to Humble Pie along with Peter Frampton, Jerry Shirley and Greg Ridley. Two great bands that came out of the Small Faces!!
"Faces" recorded for Warner Bros. They had an "unnamed" lead singer who was Rod Stewart. Rod Stewart as a solo recorded for Mercury Records, and had an unnamed band that was "Faces". Their LPs were released alternatingly with each other.
Now you’re playing some Old School Rock. As far as Rod this is when he was rocking. In the mid 70’s his music was falling into the Disco thing. The chicks loved it. Us guys weren’t really feeling it. Which is probably what your Mom’s listening to. As always another banger. Peace, Happiness and Continued Success. And a Very Merry Christmas to both of you and your families 🎅🏻

"Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" is the title of their retrospective box set. They basically formed this band as an excuse to spend their afternoons drinking together. The music was just a happy accident. Classic!
Guitarist Ronnie Wood joined the Rolling Stones after The Faces broke up. He's still with the Stones, 50 years later. The other three - Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones - were 3/4 of another incredible band, The Small Faces (a 'Face' was a term in UK 60s Mod slang for the coolest of the cool and Small comes from everyone in the band being short and slim). When lead singer Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie, Stewart and Wood joined but, both being tall, the group dropped the Small from their name. There's dozens of songs from The Faces, The Small Faces and Humble Pie that are well worth checking out. You pretty much can't go wrong with any of them. For Humble Pie, I strongly suggest the live TV version of Black Coffee. If you like Rod Stewart's voice for Rock, you're going to love Steve Marriott's.
Most of the guys in this band were previously Small Faces, with Steve Marriot (another ridiculous singer, if you're unfamiliar). Everyone should hear "The Universal" at least once.
I agree that "The Universal" is a sadly underrated song. Steve loved it, thought the lyrics were the best he had ever written, although I think he did an amazing job at songwriting all their songs (some with Ronnie). Sadly, others in the group didn't agree, and when it only reached #16 on the charts (many other groups would have died to have their songs get in the top 20), Steve thought he had failed the band and used it as one of his reasons for quitting. I think the song is much more appreciated now than it was at the time.
Knew you guys would love the sound of this one. Very gritty raw Stones like sound, with Ron Wood on guitar, who then joined the Rolling Stones a few years later.
Aloha gentleman. Saw the faces on their last tour in Hawaii. Thus song was smoking hot. Rod the bod and running Ronnie. I think we payed 7.50 ticket oh ya peace and love

After the Faces: Ronnie Wood - still in The Rolling Stones Kenny Jones - replaced your boy Keith Moon in the Who after he died Ian Mclagan - side man for Stones and session touring keys for 100 great artists Ronnie Lane - sadly died young but made a great album with Pete from the Who before dying Rod - you know
You can feel the vaudeville in early Rod Stewart. I loved this live shows. He wa ll over that stage like James Brown! You need to find some video. Oh yeah, I am black and he was the man!!
Saw them live. My first real concert. No assigned seating just muscle your way to the stage. AWESOME SHOW. I threw my brand new hoodie on stage Rod was looking forca sweat towel. He offered it back, I was so shocked I shook my head. Well I froze my ass off walking home. I was in high school. My mom was none too happy. Lol

Saw them, but after Lane was gone. Incredible show
Lol, definitely no mistaking Rod's voice!
Lol
