The DIRTIEST ENGINE we've ever torn apart! (4.8 LS) + Our Shop Waste Oil Heater EXPLAINED! - UTX

- Today at Ugly Truck, we're tearing down the 4.8L engine we took out of Emily's 1970 Chevy C10. (If you missed that video, check it out here! • LS SWAPPED 1970 Chevy ... ) We bought this engine with about 240k miles for cheap, and threw it in the C10 just to get the LS swap done...knowing that it wouldn't last forever. It ran great, but used coolant from day one. Fast forward a couple years and many miles later, and the engine has a knock and a ton of sludge in the oil pan. We freshened up a 5.3 and swapped it in, and the 70 Chevy is back on the road. But our curiosity got the best of us, and we had to know exactly where the antifreeze was leaking, and how much damage was caused.
As soon as we removed the first valve cover, we had the answer to our first question. The coolant was definitely leaking into the oil, and not out the tailpipe. We found a little wear on the rockers and push rods, but overall the engine actually held up pretty well considering the mileage and condition of the oil. Even the bearings on the crankshaft looked good. It looks like the camshaft and cam bearings took the brunt of the damage, and after seeing the oil pickup tube and the sludge in the oil pan, it's a miracle it ran as well as it did. These 4.8L's are tough little engines!
Shoutout to Eric from @I_Do_Cars for the crankshaft pulley remover trick! The rods that come with the puller are notorious for bending, but he pointed out an LS pushrod works just fine. And the good new is, now we have 16 new ones!

Glad that pushrod trick worked! I've noted over the teardown if you don't grease or lube the ends it'll turn it into a pretzel. People like that too, ha!
The pushrod trick has saved us many times! That's a good point on lubing the ends! I pretzel'd one on a 6.0 recently, but I'll try that next time.

When I worked on the farm in high school we had a homemade used oil burner and it nearly caught the shop on fire .
They're seriously dangerous! We never leave it unattended, and we're really lucky we don't get a lot of customers in the shop. Definitely not "child friendly!

I was taught the opposite. I put a hole through my lip pulling on a wrench that slipped and got me. Ruined my modeling career. Since then I have always tried to make sockets and wrenches go away from me. Thanks Jerry

Thanks Jon! Jerry and I get along pretty well together I guess! 😆 We had the cylinder heads cleaned and checked, and they came back OK, so we're assuming it was the head gasket. This engine had a ton of miles on it, so not much of a surprise! Thanks for watching!

Hey Shelman! The 4.8's are great engines! We actually just got this block back from the machine shop and it just needed the cylinders honed, and the heads just needed surfaced. Not bad for 270k miles! Thanks for tuning in!
706 heads are know for cracking, on the top near the head of the head bolts

Modern coolant has emulsifiers in it that’s why it doesn’t make the oil look like a milkshake
🙁 If it had made a real milkshake, I probably would have seen it on the dipstick and caught it before it took out the cam bearings. I was so convinced it was going out the tailpipe and not into the oil. But it held up pretty well for an engine with 250k miles!
4.8 is the same block as a 5.3. Wouldn't it be worth saving the block for a later 5.3 build?
Yes, but the crank and rods are specific to the 4.8, so the parts list adds up quick on that one. But it's still rolling around the shop here somewhere... maybe you'll see it again someday! 😉

That's what we were planning on, but it's really not that bad. We may end up rebuilding it.

It's hard to say because I like the noise it makes when I put my foot to the floor, but it got around 16-18 MPG. A little better than the old 350, but big improvement on horsepower and reliability.

I WILL NOT BUILD A WASTE OIL STOVE! there, I said it. That was the nastiest engine teardown I have ever witnessed, how could you make me watch that. Oh, I guess you didn't make me. Rebuild that jule and put it in a go-cart. I want to see that build. Great video ya'll, I still love the dog.

How many miles were on this engine?
It had around 230-240k when we put it in, so it probably has around 250k now. We picked it up super cheap and threw it in just to get the LS swap done, so we knew this day was coming. Definitely a testament to how tough these 4.8's are!
@@UglyTruckExperience I rebuild my 6.0 in my 2005 GMC sierra 2500hd just because it bent a rod from a head gasket seap. It had 240000 miles on it and the bottom end was like new. GM LS engines are tough motors.
Who's Lucy? Just kidding. That engine looked pretty nasty but nothing a good bath won't fix. I have seen a few guys on youtube who say headbolts can be reused. And any gaskets that aren't damaged
We are thinking about cleaning it up and turning it into a 5.3. Heads are being checked for cracks and that will probably determine if we put it back together. Reuse head bolts? That's a lot of work to pull a head back off just to save 30 bucks. I am what you would call safe with money, but not that safe. Better safe than sorry
